IOC drops wrestling for 2020 Olympics; Freestyle & Roman-Greco removed from 2020 program

International Olympic Committee leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games.

The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon — the event considered most at risk — and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports."

The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.

Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896.

"This is a process of renewing and renovating the program for the Olympics," IOC spokesman Mark Adams said. "In the view of the executive board, this was the best program for the Olympic Games in 2020. It's not a case of what's wrong with wrestling, it is what's right with the 25 core sports."

Adams said the decision was made by secret ballot over several rounds, with members voting each time on which sport should not be included in the core group. IOC President Jacques Rogge did not vote.

Wrestling was voted out from a final group that also included modern pentathlon, taekwondo and field hockey, officials familiar with the vote told The Associated Press. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the voting details were not made public.

The board voted after reviewing a report by the IOC program commission report that analyzed 39 criteria, including television ratings, ticket sales, anti-doping policy and global participation and popularity. With no official rankings or recommendations contained in the report, the final decision by the 15-member board was also subject to political, emotional and sentimental factors.

The Olympics are over-rated, anyway. They should all be cancelled. :)

This.

About the only thing that would draw me into the olympics is if they brought in cricket. Which is what I'm kind of hoping they dropped wrestling for.

STAY HYPED!!!
The only time I watched the Olympics in 2012 is when they were on in the break room at work. I honestly couldn't name 5 Olympic events without looking them up. Well, I probably could just by guessing random sports. But even that would be a short list since I don't really know that many different sports. I honestly don't care what events get dropped.

I have read about this in a few reports though. Kurt Angle is understandably upset by this and is making a big stink over it trying to get them to change their mind.

They should add Pro Wrestling to the Olympics, because both are fake.

Isn't wrestling like the first sport? They are taking it out but adding Ball Room Dancing? Makes perfect sense.

I think running/racing on foot is considered to be the first Olympic sport, with wrestling probably being the second.

It is silly to remove it since it's one of the base athletic skills but the Olympics don't mean anything to me so I don't care. Even if I was into sports, the Olympics always feel like they're trying to include any and all even remotely athletic activites that they possibily can. I mean there are a lot of questionable events in the Olympics. It seems very random at times.

In my opinion, they should only have the core athletic events. Something like: long distance running, sprinting (speed rather than endurance), wrestling, swimming, basic gymnastics, long jump, pole vault, etc. Just the basic tests of human athleticism. Rhythmic gymnastics? Get out of here. Synchronized diving? Fuck your mother. These are the reasons the Olympics have always meant jack to me, even when I was a little kid. Someone claiming to be a Super Bowl champ, NBA Finals champ, World Series champ, World Cup champ, etc was always more impressive to me than a little medal from some random ass Olympic sport.
