ABC has ordered a pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D, a live-action series from The Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon, Marvel TV and ABC Studios. The project is based on Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, including the blockbuster 2012 movie The Avengers, in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury, recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to stop Thor’s adoptive brother Loki from subjugating Earth.

S.H.I.E.L.D. will be written by Whedon and frequent collaborators, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Joss Whedon also is set to direct the pilot, schedule permitting. Production on the pilot, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately. Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen executive produce with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

The project had been in the works at Marvel TV and ABC Studios for some time. Earlier this month, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that it had signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Joss Whedon, which included him writing and directing The Avengers sequel and develop a live-action series for Marvel TV and ABC, both owned by Disney.

This marks a return to series television for Joss Whedon, creator of cult favorites Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Husband and wife writing duo Jed Whedon and Tancharoen co-penned with Joss Whedon Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and also have worked on Dollhouse and Spartacus. In addition to S.H.I.E.L.D, Marvel TV has a couple of other projects in development at ABC Studios, including a Hulk series.

Is there a time when Joss Whedon sleeps? Better yet, do we care if he ever does? Character details on his new Avengers TV spin off, titled S.H.I.E.L.D., have emerged online. Zap2it had the official character descriptions of 5 new agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The new series is being co-written by Whedon, his brother Jed, and Maurissa Tancharoen.

Agent Grant Ward: A gruff, anti-social manly man in his early 30s who's great at his job but not so great at getting along with his coworkers. Ward has a strong moral foundation and isn't without his charm.

Skye: A quintessential Whedon woman, Skye is described as "bubbly and goofy" but "also warm, edgy and witty." She's in her late 20s and can more than hold her own in any situation.

Agent Althea Rice (a.k.a. The Cavalry): A strong, silent type, still damaged by harrowing combat duty, Rice is in her late 30s and is both an ace pilot and a weapons expert.

Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons: A twosome so connected to each other they're known as "Fitz-Simmons." They're in their late 20s but already highly respected agents. Nerdy yet attractive, they bicker like brother and sister. His specialty is weapons, gadgets and cutting edge technology. Hers is life sciences (both human and alien).

You probably had the debate whether or not Agent Coulson was truly dead this past summer. Would that really be all for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent that stood toe to toe against a Norse God? At one point we even heard a rumor that Agent Coulson would resurface again as the Vision in the next Avengers movie. That rumor was probably just a lot of fanboy speculation.

Last weekend at the New York Comic Con, Joss Whedon announced (via a recorded message) that Agent Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) would in deed make an appearance in the new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series.

Whedon had this to say:

"We all love Clark Gregg, there's no doubt about that," Joss announced in a taped message played for fans at New York Comic-Con on Saturday. "From before we made 'The Avengers,' we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death."

Marvel uber producer Kevin Feige then backed up Whedon will this remark:

"There was never going to be a 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' show without Agent Phil Coulson!"

So would this be an appearance? A flashback? Perhaps his memory being transported into a robotic body (I really liked that one, can’t you tell)?

Whedon that said:

"He's headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was”.

The only question that remains now is Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Will he make an appearance? With production of the pilot already under way, we’ll know soon enough.

Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) will lead S.H.I.E.L.D. the TV series but who will be his team? The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that ER’s Ming-Na will play Agent Melinda May in Joss Whedon’s pilot for the series.

What is S.H.I.E.L.D. (for those unfamiliar)? From ABC Studios, the project is based on the long-running comic created by Jack Kirby and revolves around the secret military law enforcement agency dubbed S.H.I.E.L.D., which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate.

Agent Melinda May is described as a soulful soldier but has been damaged by her time in combat. Agent May is also a top notch pilot.

IGN has officially confirmed that ABC has picked up Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This seems like seems logical choice since The Avengers made a billion dollars and Disney owns both Marvel and ABC. Regardless, the Joss Whedon written and directed pilot should make its way to television this fall.

The other big news is that “footage” has leaked from the pilot . The footage contains what appears to be a Hulk like creature. Is it the Hulk? Is it Abomination? The debate is on and it’s starting to become the modern “Patterson- Gimlin Bigfoot Footage”.

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
I really hate that this is being aired on ABC. I really don't want to break my "no watching network drama shows" rule, but for this I might.

Hold up.

This entire time I assumed that the TV show is taking place before the Avengers, for obvious reasons. Now I find out that they're bringing Coulson back from the dead!

Nope, I just assumed the TV show was taking place before the Avengers since Coulson died in the Avengers.

Yes. Did you read the explanation?

Same reason he died in the first place, to galvanize the Avengers, right?

5 episodes into Agents of Shield and I'm kind of frustrated with it. For a Joss Whedon show, I'm disappointed that this works like fucking NCIS/CSI for the most part. And as far as the characters goes, I only care about Coulson and May. The pair of Brits aren't interesting, Ward is just barely better than Riley from BTVS and Skye is a mixed bag for me. The actress is a bit green, but she has the potential to get better.

Also, I got a question that might be a spoiler:

I didn't watch Season 2 yet.

I did end watching the whole first season. The first ten episodes really sucked, but it drastically improved after that.

ABC has renewed Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for a fourth season. The veteran series, which will be returning from its 3-month mid-season break next Tuesday, has seen its ratings slightly dip as of late but still draws a loyal following. Set in the same universe as popular Marvel franchises, the action drama enjoys being able to tie in with major motion picture releases from the studio.

The real question is if Agent Carter gets renewed.

Please don't take Hayley Atwell off my TV screen.

I think it may get a 3rd season but it may be the last unless they can pull some monster rating out their asses.

Ghost Rider

I think this is the 1st legit comic character they are bringing into the show if I'm not mistaken...other than the Nick Fury cameo.

I thought there would be more characters popping up than there has been. Marvel has plenty of them that aren't in movies they can use.

They might actually be scaling it back. I still think AOS's Inhuman storyline was cause for the Inhuman movie being "delayed".
