Stand Back! There's a Hurricane Coming Through
|
I have seen this movie and will post a review of it just because I think people are waiting for someone to post one so they can all tell them how stupid their opinion is. So, I'll be glad to do that. ![]() As for critics, I have never and will never read what they say and have it matter to me at all. Critics are just one person giving their opinion of a movie or book or restaurant or whatever. Just because they get paid to do it, doesn't mean anyone should value their opinion more than anyone else's.It's like someone trying to tell me what woman I should find attractive because they find them attractive. Doesn't make sense. And, why should it matter if they see 250 films a year? I jerk off more than anyone on the board. Does that mean you should listen to me when it comes to me telling you how to stroke your cock? There have been so many movies that I have seen that I liked and critics hated. And, there have been many movies critics loved and I hated. So, I just go see films I am interested in and form my own opinion. As for this movie, I liked and disliked parts of it and will give a honest review when I feel like typing it up sometime this week. |

Stand Back! There's a Hurricane Coming Through
|
Here is my completely honest and hopefully unbiased review of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. I would like to say that this is coming from a fan of both comic books and the DC universe which will obviously have an influence on this review.I decided to break it down by telling you the good, the bad and then an overall take on the film. It goes without saying, there will be spoilers. Let's get started. THE GOOD: 1. Ben Affleck as Batman - When this casting was announced, everyone and I mean everyone shit on it. DL and I were in the very small group that supported it. Without a doubt, we were right. Affleck is perhaps the best Batman that has ever been shown on a movie screen. 2. Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman- Again, when Gal was cast, people shit on it. They said she was too small and skinny to play the Amazon. They were wrong again. When Wonder Woman shows up for the first time in costume, the audience in the theater I was in applauded. She was awesome in the limited role she had in this film. 3. The action- The costumes for both Batman and Wonder Woman were amazing. The look of the characters and the final fight scenes were great to see and fun to watch. The way Batman fought and moved was spot on. THE BAD: 1. Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor- Jesse is a terrible actor. I put him in the same vein as Michael Cera or Will Ferrell. No matter what character they are playing, it might as well be the same guy. 2. The Characterization of Icons- For a DC comic book fan, they way the 3 main characters of Batman, Superman and Lex Luthor were written was irritating. Batman is one of the most logical and intelligent characters ever written. When other people run headlong into a situation, he always formulates a plan and has a dozen options. So, seeing Superman destroy buildings in Metropolis where people get killed in his fight with Zod and it making him hate him to the point of deciding to kill him, is just dumb. Batman doesn't kill. Batman doesn't use guns. Superman is suppose the be the bright light, the beacon of hope in the DC universe. He was neither. I don't know what the fuck happened to Lex. This is not my Lex Luthor and I don't want this Lex Luthor. Lex has always been either a scientist back in the old days or an entrepreneur/business tycoon with a scientific background. What he has never been is a slightly crazy, socially awkward nerd. You have the joker and Harley Quinn for your crazy villains. You don't need that for Lex. 3. Too Many Stories- Watching this film, you can tell Zack Snyder is a fan of trade paperbacks. He based the entire movie on the Dark Knight Returns story by Frank Miller. But his favorite part was Batman fighting Superman. So, he decided to leave out the bit where they had years of friendship and trust prior to their conflict, which made the whole story worth telling. He was also a fan of The Death of Superman, Crisis on Infinite Earths and Darkseid. Those are four huge stories that can each be told in their own movies or series of movies. But Zack though he'd cram a bit of each into one movie. It wasn't necessary and too much for this film. There were too many dream sequences by Bruce. I think the point of them was to show him worrying about Superman and how he was going to take over or destroy the planet. You could have done that with one recurring dream and shown a bit of each each time to get the entire dream by the last sequence. Most of the ones in the movie just made it feel cluttered. SUMMARY: As with all of Zach Snyder's movies, this was visually great to see and the action was amazing at times. If you are just a casual fan of comics and these characters, I think you would enjoy it much more than a comic book fan. The story had too many plot points and many weren't necessary for this film. The tone is very dark and gritty which is what they were going for. The only problem with that is Superman isn't a dark and gritty character. He is the total opposite. While I pointed out the things I didn't like about the story, it was still a decent story. You just have to accept the characterization of the heroes in this version. That was the hardest thing for me to do. While I don't think this is one of the best films of all time I also don't think this is the worst thing since Halle Berry's Catwoman. Basically, it's an average film. On a scale of 1-5, I'd give it a 3. You do get to see the best Batman ever, the first Wonder Woman on the big screen and the first team up of the DC Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. That in itself is epic. |

My two biggest gripes were Luthor and too many running storylines. Instead of subtlety, the film bashes you over the head about what's to come. The introduction of the League should have been a post credit scene, not practically stopping the film right before the climax. I really liked the Knightmare scene and Flash introduction, because I'm a sucker for time travel and parallel universes. This was a very hardened and callous Batman I felt, more than usual. He clearly killed people during the car chase and the fight scene (not the Knightmare scene). I can sort of see why he's willing to take out Supes since it's implied he's been fighting for so long yet it seems things keep falling apart, and now an alien basically leveled a city with ease. Though if he was really that worried about Superman, it would have seemed like he would have detective'd the shit out of finding out if he had a civilian identity. Luthor, lord Jesus. I wanted to really like this take on him, but I couldn't. Some days I do, some days I don't. IMO, Luthor is best played like a cunning, savvy businessman, who can turn on the hate and anger on a dime. I get that they were going for an eccentric, young millionaire type, but he came off as an awkward cringy loony. --------- There are rumors of WB running the uncut version of the movie in theaters. Honestly I hope they are because I would see it again. This is my kind of movie, so I'm going to enjoy it. |

I totally agree about Lex. I would have much prefered he be like the version you see in all the animated stories played by Bryan Cranston like it was rumored earlier. I know the uncut R-Rated version is going to be on the Blu-ray. It would be interesting to see it in theaters. I do know that version is 3 hours long and would be a tough ticket to sell I think for the general public. I guess it just depends on what WB cares about getting out of showing that version in theaters. I'll buy the DVD and watch and if it comes to theaters, I'd see it there first. I'm not sure if it came across this way in my review, but I did like it enough to see again and to buy the movie. |

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!

I would add Jeremy Irons as a positive to this film. BvS isn't as bad as critics make it seem to be, but it's neither as great as the fanboys point it out. Score for me is between 2.5/5 and 3/5. As for the scene revealing the metahumans, I would have had Diana opening the email right after Wayne sends it, but not show her watching the videos. You save that for the penultimate scene if you don't want DC Comics/WB to be labeled as a Marvel ripoff. Oh, and for anyone who has yet to watch it: no post-credit scenes. |

Watched the Ultimate Edition. It doesn't fix the characterization issues of course, but the story is so much more fleshed out and flows better. |
