New Japan Pro Wrestling held a live press conference this morning, announcing the unveiling of their own streaming service, “New Japan World," which is basically their version of the WWE Network.

The cost of the service, which is available worldwide, is 999 yen per month, which comes out to around $8.40 per month in the United States, $9.60 in Canada and 5.38 in pounds.

Their network will carry all of their major shows, including the four or five big monthly shows that used to air on pay-per-view, the G-1 Tag League finals next weekend, and the big Tokyo Dome event, which in a sense undercuts Global Force Wrestling, who are offering the show via pay-per-view in America at a much higher rate (although on the NJPW Network service, it will only be in Japanese, not the Jim Ross commentary).

Hopefully, they'll have a smoother launch than WWE did. New Japan Pro Wrestling will also be available on USA TV sometime in the near future. I saw a news report about it, but no one ever posted about it and I forgot.

Also, off topic, but I can't stop myself from thinking how awesome it would have been if we had the Network during the Attitude Era. Could you imagine how many subscribers there would be and how much content we'd have if both WCW and WWE were trying to out do each others respective Networks? And maybe ECW would have had a better chance of survival if people had access to it via online streaming. Oh well.

New Japan is going to be airing featured matches/shows from 2013 on AXS TV (formerly HDNet) on Friday nights starting in January. I don't see it making a significant difference for their business but it's a cheap option that shouldn't need many viewers to be successful.

NJPW World is really cool. I gave them my 999 yen without hesitation. There isn't a US version of the site up at least yet but it's really simple to translate the page in Chrome. They take American credit cards so you can sign up without using any kind of proxy.

Major events will air live on NJPW World similar to the WWE Network but there isn't a constant live streaming channel. The archive is fairly extensive but spotty in places too. It seems to work flawlessly on the technical side. It is a lot easier to navigate than the WWE Network even with spotty translations. Hopefully there is some app support for it soon so that it's possible to view on television.

Thanks, I might actually check this out.

WWE is killing my interest in wrestling, I need something different.

On the day that WWE announced that they had finally hit one million subscribers for their network, it's worth sparing a thought about New Japan Pro Wrestling, who only have 20,000 subs for their online channel so far, less than half that hoped for at this stage.

It should be noted that the target was a realistic one that should have been easy for New Japan to achieve, IF Dave Meltzer's reports were true that the Wrestle Kingdom events in 2013 and 2014 had drawn about 100,000 iPPV buys at a much higher price point than the 999 yen it costs for one month's subscription to New Japan World. However, other sources suggest that the 2014 show only did 15,000 total pay-per-view buys, which makes the aim more ambitious, but not completely infeasible due to the drop in price.

I didn't post the full article, just the two paragraph with the interesting statistics.

If I would've had access to the WWE Network and any alternatives like this New Japan World back in 2000-2002, I would've done literally nothing I didn't have to other than watch wrestling.

I used to watch literally anything I could back then. I refused to miss an episode of WWF Jakked even, for fucks sake.

Unfortunately that was still during the dying days of tape trading and before the internet was a viable option. But man... if I had access to all of that then I might have been more driven to get into wrestling in some form, rather than flirting with a few options and then ultimately resuming my utterly mediocre life.
