Simple enough. What is your favorite commentary team ever? In any promotion, any length of time of existence (even one night only appearances), etc. --- I've long said that Paul Heyman and Jim Ross were my favorite commentary team ever. Heyman and Ross are both extremely knowledgeable and it always entertained me to hear how irritated Ross would sound when dealing with Heyman. I love that heel commentator/face commentator dynamic. With all the watching of the older stuff, I've come to really re-appreciate the classic team of Lawler and Ross - at least the duo before Lawler left in early 2001. It and Lawler was never really the same again. The peak of this team was easily back right around the time Vince McMahon left ringside to become Mr McMahon. Lawler was at his peak of being a nasty and loudmouth heel and it was glorious. The constant digs at the Hart family were hilarious. It did all kind of started going downhill a bit when Sable came along and Lawler got totally obsessed with her, though. I've also grown to get a kind of enjoyment from early Heenan and Schiavone team-ups in WCW. You could tell Heenan felt WCW was a bit below him and that maybe the move over wasn't the best decision afterall, and Schiavone was the perfect snarky straight man for that era of Heenan. Like Heyman and Ross, it always felt like there was some kind of tension at ringside - which probably just speaks about how incredible of a job they did at the time (and maybe some reality mixed in ).

STAY HYPED!!!

Not to copy off your paper, but I agree with J.R. and King as my all time favorite commentary team. I actually liked it before they became on screen best friends. Back when King was still a heel doing heel commentating, cheering for the heels and hating all the faces. But even when they were buddy-buddy, I still enjoyed them. I also enjoyed Tony Schiavone in WCW. He takes a lot of slack for calling everything "the greatest night in the history of our business" and the Foley "that'll put butts in seats" comments, but I think he was just doing what he was told. Over all, I thought Schiavone was a good commentator and was the voice of WCW, imo. |

This is so hard for me because I love a lot of commentators but not necessarily the team they were a part of. Best play by play men were Jr and Joey Styles. Color men were Bobby Heenan, Jessie Ventura and Paul Heyman. Teams? Tough. Just to add another set, I think I'll go with Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan. As a team, I really liked them a lot. |

Probably JR and King, but only because I grew up listening to them. |

Technically... you could say Joey Styles as a stand alone just based off of his solo work in ECW. It was definitely a damn good job, especially for just one person. |

Actually, I'd like to revise my choice. My favorite team was Joey Styles and Joel Gertner. |

As great as Bobby Heenan was I also have to go with JR and King. King was great as a heel commentator. Not as great as Bobby but when u add in JR who was the greatest ever, it makes Jr and King the best commentating duo in the history of professional wrestling and maybe all of sports and entertainment. |

You know, with all the Jim Ross and Bobby Heenan love over the years, I wonder how a commentary team of Jim Ross in his prime and Bobby Heenan in his prime would be. Purely fantasy booking there, but still... |

I was about to say its just Lawler, Vince, and Savage... then there they were. And it ended with a Johnny Polo mention! Its so bizarre to see those two together. It kind of reminds me of a much lesser feeling that I felt when I was seeing guys like Flair in the ring with Stone Cold back in 2001 for the first time. That kind of visual where you just kind of have to stare for it to really sink in and register. How long were they a unit? I don't think I've ever even heard about it before, and I used to read JR's blog all the time back on WWE's site and have listened to almost every podcast of his for the last year. It couldn't have been too long since Heenan and Savage went to WCW around that time. |

It was less than a year. JR took over for Gorilla Monsoon and then Heenan left. |

Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan Lance Russell and Dave Brown Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay The WCW crew was the first team I ever heard call wrestling and they called the greatest wrestling promotion in the world so they're probably the best even if Bobby and Tenay hated Schiavone. |

I've got an oddball one that doesn't get mentioned often: Dave Prazak. I'm really only familiar with his work with SHIMMER, but he seems like the perfect fit (beyond his founding of the company). Something about his voice and manner of speaking is a perfect balance of seriousness and light-heartedness for what happens in SHIMMER and I honestly couldn't imagine hearing the voice of anyone else as the primary commentator for the shows. Although if SHIMMER was to ever get bigger, I think it would need a new voice added. Prazak has a great voice and manner of speaking for small events but I couldn't see him being the main guy for a TNA level show or higher. |
