Wrestling legend "Rowdy" Roddy Piper has died at the age of 61... TMZ Sports has learned. Piper -- born Roderick George Toombs -- died from cardiac arrest in his sleep at his home in Hollywood at around noon Friday. Piper was a wrestling icon -- one of the biggest stars in the WWE back in the '80s, and even wrestled in "Wrestlemania I" back in 1985 ... squaring off against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T. Roddy's rep tells us, "I am devastated at this news. Rod was a good friend as well as a client and one of the most generous, sincere and authentic people I have ever known. This is a true loss to us all." Piper had been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2006, but last November he said he was cancer free. A family source tells us he was "cancer free" at the time of his death. A family member tells us, "Our family is saddened by the sudden passing of our father and beloved husband, Roderick Toombs aka Rowdy Roddy Piper." Roddy was admitted into the WWE Hall of Fame back in 2005 and was one of the top 50 villains in the history of the WWE . Piper had a long relationship with WWE -- last wrestling back in 2008 ... but appeared on various WWE shows up until 2014. Roddy is survived by his wife Kitty and their 4 kids -- including 3 daughters and son Colton who's pursuing a career in professional wrestling. The death is especially shocking considering we just spoke to him on Friday and asked his opinion about the Hulk Hogan scandal.

Can't believe two of my all-time favorite wrestlers have passed away within the course of a couple months. In my opinion, Roddy Piper was the greatest heel in professional wrestling history. Rest easy, "Hot Rod."

This is shaping up to be one of the worst years of wrestling for people that grew up in the 80s and 90s. Horrible news. :(

I've always told people that my favorite wrestling event I went to was at MSG when Piper was the guest host and he and Vince had a spouting match in the middle of the ring in 2009. This news actually hurts me. I'm hoping WWE Network does some sort of special for him.

It's a fabulous new day, yes it is!
I felt sad when I read about him passing away last Friday.

WWE edited the video of his HOF announcement by not only removing Hogan, but also the blackface segment of Piper against Bad News Brown.

I'm sure WWE will put on a tribute video for Piper on Raw tonight. Like other sites said, this will be the first real test of how severe WWE's ban on Hogan is. I think WWE might highlight Piper without showing Hogan at all, but Hogan alongside Piper are a big part of the WM I Main Event, and that's vital for Piper. Hmm...

Fantastic tribute. If there's one thing that WWE always does right, it's these videos.

For whatever reason, I'm having a lot more trouble processing Piper's death than I had processing Dusty's. One of my close friends met Roddy a couple of months ago and he had great things to say about him. Wish I could have had the opportunity to have met him, too. :(

I thought Dusty was bad. This is 15 times worse.

For me it's because Roddy was always my favorite old-school wrestler. It's not losing Eddie but this would be the 1985 equivalent of losing him.

I'm not criticizing, but I really wish there was some narration to the video. It almost feels like an eulogy for wrestling fans when we hear a voice over talk. I'm talking about similar to how they do the HOF videos and give a nice recap of the person's career. That would have been awesome.

Well, it was just a scene from a movie. And he was all out of bubble gum.

I was commenting on the video WWE aired on Raw, not the video you linked. :tu:

I think both are appropriate. I like the musical montages the videos usually that are aired right after a death. It's weird, but that's why I'm like "okay I get the Owen video," but if I'm not mistaken Vince narrates over it and it just doesn't give me as emotional as a feeling. But as they reach the hall of fame, then you're describing their career and why their attributes are worthy so I feel the narrative videos are necessary. I've just always been keen on musical promos I guess.

I've felt that way ever since this video they showed at the end of 2003 when they had a memorization on some sort of "best of" show where they used an Evanescence song to show all of those who died that year. I remember it ended with Freddie Blasse. I wish I can find that shit.

Found it by just typing "wwe 2003 tribute" in the youtube search.
