Found footage monster movie Cloverfield is getting a sequel — kind of. People settling down to watch Michael Bay's 13 Hours in movie theaters last night were treated to a surprise trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, what appears to be a post-apocalyptic drama set in an underground bunker, produced by J.J. Abrams, and made by his Bad Robot production company. Soon after news of the trailer's existence hit Twitter, Abrams confirmed that the new movie would indeed be a "blood relative" to Cloverfield in a statement, suggesting it will take place in the same universe as the first film.

As seen in the trailer above, 10 Cloverfield Lane stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. as seemingly captive guests of John Goodman in an underground bunker, who bans them from going outside for unknown reasons. The trailer ends when Gallagher Jr. makes a break for freedom, coming face to face with something in the outside world through a window that we don't get to see.

The film was directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who previously put together short film Portal: No Escape. News that Trachtenberg would be directing a post-apocalyptic thriller broke in 2014. Then titled Valencia, it was set to star Goodman, Winstead, and Gallagher Jr., but had no obvious connection with Cloverfield at the time.

That movie, too, went through several name changes on set to keep the movie's story secret, switching from its original title of Cloverfield to 01-18-08 for its first reveal, before the production changed its working title to words like Slusho and Cheese as fans tried to find out more information about the plot. This may be the first we've seen of Cloverfield's semi-sequel, but we won't have to wait long to see it — it hits theaters on March 11th.
Exciting stuff. Considering that the movie will be opening in less than two months, I'm impressed by how well J.J. Abrams kept this project under wraps for so long.
