Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are in the early planning of developing a reboot trilogy of the popular Stargate franchise.

Now that team of director Roland Emmerich and writer/producer Dean Devlin have returned to the world of Independence Day with their highly anticipated sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, they are getting ready to return to another science fiction universe they created: Stargate.

Most forget that before the duo blew up the White House and propelled Will Smith to super stardom, they created the world of Stargate. Released in 1994, the film starred Kurt Russell and James Spader and featured a portal that could transport people across the universe.

While the film has become a cult classic over the years, Stargate is probably best remembered thanks to Stargate: SG-1, the hugely popular television show that spun out of the initial movie. That show also spawned a pair of spinoffs for a grand total of over 350 episodes.

But what many moviegoers may not realize is that Emmerich and Devlin had planned the original Stargate as the first of a trilogy of movies. For whatever reason, the rights to the property changed hands and the pair never got a chance to make the second and third films in the series.

However, Emmerich and Devlin never gave up hope that at some point down the road they may get the chance to go back and revisit Stargate, and it looks like that time may be fast approaching.

In an interview with Variety, Devlin talks about the fact they never got to finish the story they intended to tell and how it has bothered them ever since.

"Because of what happened with the rights and changes at the studio and all kinds of strange things, we never got to do parts two and three. It was taken away from us, and it's tough to have your children raised by other parents, even if they do a very good job. For us, it's not putting down what has been done. It's to let us finish telling our story."

It is a project the pair have been talking about for a number of years, and now with Independence Day: Resurgence complete, now might be the time.

Of course, going back and picking up where the original Stargate left off isn't really an option. It has been over 20 years since the first film and everyone has gotten quite a bit older, not to mention the legions of fans of the television shows who would hate to see a continuation of the franchise that doesn't acknowledge the events of the TV series.

So what are Emmerich and Devlin to do? Why, reboot the whole thing from scratch of course.

The hope is that the duo can relaunch the whole concept of Stargate as not just a trilogy, but as a whole cinematic universe according to Devlin.

"It's not a story that can take place 20 years later. So the only way to really tell that trilogy is to go back from the beginning and start the story all over again. Today, studios tend to not think of movies as trilogies or sequels (but) as cinematic universes. So as we've been developing it, we found all these avenues that allow it to expand. The foundation is exactly the same as what we wanted to do, but now the possibilities are much wider."

While the original Stargate was only considered a modest hit, with the advancements in CGI and the clout Emmerich and Devlin have in Hollywood, Stargate could easily become the next Star Wars or Matrix. Thanks to the TV series, the property already has a large built in audience that could translate into huge box office numbers.

Poor Eli.

I'd be interested.

I like the idea of this! Stargates never been my favourite sci fi franchise but I feel like I've always had a soft spot for it. I enjoyed the film and the TV series they made got progressively better. I just wish SG:U lasted a little longer!
