Former World Heavyweight Champion Mark Henry has retired from in-ring competition, according to the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer.

The 46-year-old has appeared on WWE TV sporadically over recent years after assuming ambassadorial duties within the company's legends program.

His last official match came at April's WrestleMania 33, where he participated in the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal, won by Mojo Rawley. The decision to hang up his boots comes after more than 20 years of performing for the company, none of them short of incident.

Henry originally signed for Vince McMahon in 1996, turning his hand to professional wrestling after representing the United States in Olympic weightlifting. The early portion of his career saw him team up with The Rock as part of the Nation of Domination, before becoming known as "Sexual Chocolate".

Under this guise, he experienced perhaps his most famous WWE moment, when he fathered a child with Mae Young, who would subsequently give birth to a hand. It would be a further decade before the self-proclaimed World's Strongest Man began headlining shows, winning the ECW Championship in 2008 and the World Heavyweight Title three years later.

Henry is expected to continue working for WWE as an ambassador, with many tipping him for a spot in the company's Hall of Fame in the near-future.

I have both enjoyed and hated Mark Henry at different points in his career  but overall I think I'll miss him, a consistent precence over the last 20 years of WWE.

2012 ROYAL RUMBLE WINNER MOTHERFUCKERS!!!
Recently, I've been curious to go back and watch when he won the title and watch his matches of him defending it. I've heard it's pretty good stuff.

Any thoughts on his title run? Specifically with the World Heavyweight Championship.

Henry's World Heavyweight Title reign was a lot of fun to watch, from what I can recall. He was doing this "Hall of Pain" schtick that was great. I think the most excited I ever was about Mark Henry, though, was when he laid out John Cena after faking his retirement in 2013. That segment was legitimately fucking incredible and is absolutely worth seeking out if you haven't seen it before.
