What about Matthew Boyd & Jude Bolton? Don't think I've ever seen them lining up in the forward line.

Can't be to fussed over midfielders imo

Most can & do play other positions

Besides that...most "traditional" positions are redundent & modern teams consist of "bulk" mids starting back, forward & centre

ie Alan Didak,Small forward...Plays more as a wingman

Luke Hodge,Small Defender, Plays as a rebounding/playmaking Mid starting in the back 50

etc etc

I agree with those ones, their no brainers, but I'm with D2T. If I had known we could play midfielders in pockets and flanks when they don't play there, then I could have drafted 13 mids, 4 KPP and a ruck.

Yes I agree with the Didak and Hodge ones too, as I'm sure everyone else does. It's genuine midfielders that have never ventured forward getting played as forwards that annoys me, and should be stopped.

Stoney repeats himself yet again...

For an easy reference, why do we not just use supercoach 08/09 as a guide.

Your defenders need to be 6 players from the 'Backs'.

Mids from the 'Midfield' group of players, and;

Forwards from the 'Forwards'

Its then black and white and takes personal opinion out of our game.

Done.

But what about players who changed positions from 2007 to 2008? Supercoach positions came out before then 08 season, so they might not include positional changes (such as Hodge to defence for an example).

However, I'm happy to run with it if it clears up everything, which it most certainly would IMO.

Jude Bolton... can & has spent time up forward either rotating outta the mf or in a defensive pressure role.

Matthew Boyd is primarily a mf tagger who can & has spent time playing back as the tagging role often demands this versatilty.

The above circumstances can occur on a Q to Q basis imo.Be pretty rough if u coudn't name em on a HFF & HBF.

Genuine hard core mids who spend 100% of their time in the guts are the rarity.

Then why don't we get rid of forward flanks/pockets and back flanks/pockets and just have 13 mids, 2 key forwards, 2 key backs and a ruck.

Because that's what you're suggesting.

Matthew Pavlich has spent time in the backline.
Adam Goodes has spent time in the ruck.
Jake King has spent time in the forward line.

For gods sake, it's all common sense.

You have key position backs - ie. Lake, Fisher
You have back flankers/pockets - ie. Gilbee, Newman
You have midfielders - ie. Swan, K Cornes
You have forward flankers/pockets - ie. S Johnson, A Didak
You have key position forwards - ie. Franklin, Roughead
You have ruckman - ie. Sandilands

Don't load up on midfielders because they once played a quarter there in round 3.
The draft is still going. Pick up a small forward or a small back and submit a proper team.
It isn't really that hard but some people are either a bit dumb or trying to cheat.

The ability to supply a logical argument for player X playing in position X makes is not "cheating" or "dumb".

Having to ask the question in the first place makes it dumb, if not that then it's an attempt at cheating IMO.

What I was saying D2T, is that if a player was listed as a defender in EITHER 2008 or 2009 supercoach, they can be listed as a backman in our game.

In Hodge's case, at present he will be listed as a mid, most likely will be able to play as a backman according to SC 09.

Positions won't vary greatly, and if ppl have players in positions they weren't listed in SC for the past 2 years, they get 0 for that player.

It also means pre season trading will be a little more active with coaches trying to organise their squads into realistic lineups.

Yeah I knew what you were saying, was just worried that because we are drafting before the 09 positions come out, it may become difficult to predict player positions.

But I really like the idea, and it clears everything up.

I'm happy to run with this. Thoughts from others?

It's a good suggestion but there are a couple of problems.

1) What if Goodes plays at CHF all next year but is listed as a mid?

2) Still doesn't solve our KPP problem.

Dumb is locking players into fixed postions when the reality is the majority of AFL listed players do not have a fixed position.

Dumb is locking players into fixed postions when the reality is we have no control over where they will actually play in season 09 & beyond.

A "common sense" example as listed above is debateble

Sam Fisher..why is he a KP defender?...not in 08,would have played less than a handful of games there,is primarily a rebounder who picks up oppo spuds or plays loose...Campbell Brown & Harry O'Brien spent more time as KP defenders than Sam Fisher.

Hardcore fixed possies = crap imo.

No, crap would be everyone playing 8-10 midfielders in the starting 18.

Flankers these days very often consist of midfielders. A 6 man forward line just rarely happens these days, its more like a 4 man forward line. Watch a game of footy for evidence, teams might start with 6 at a start of a quarter/restart after a goal, but will quickly move up the ground to add to the midfield numbers/create space forward.

If you go getting really picky on flankers, this game could go balls up due to over maintenence.

This is how it should be marked IMO;

Half Forward Flankers = Forwards or midfielders who posses some sort of attacking flair.

Half Back Flankers = Defenders or midfielders who posses some sort of defensive capability.

Thats all you really need to say on it to get the message through and only needs to be loosely enforced because flankly frankers quite often are pure midfielders anyway.

Get tougher on the pockets, though, by all means.

Sort of passed this stage now mate. Although I hear what you're saying.

Take a look at the Potential Player position list thread, plenty of flankers to go round.
