Tărāmul - "The Realm" Territory: Wallachia, Moldavia, and Moldova Population: ~3,500,000 History Following migration trends reaching back into Late Antiquity, several closely successive waves of migrating Cuman and Pecheneg tribes arrived in northern Romania at the end of the 11th century. They overwhelmed the settled Romano-Slavic populations without much trouble and carved out several dozen autonomous but allied territories, establishing formidable fortresses and military networks to maintain their supremacy. A further expansive spillover a generation later added the Danube valley to their possessions. Over the next 300 years, the conquerors merged with their subject populations, forming a new distinct ethnic group that came to call themselves Draci, or Devils. The ad hoc military councils that had facilitated discourse between the individual territories, or voievodate, solidified into a formal council of warlords, or voievozi. The resulting confederation, defined simply by Drac-occupied territory, became known as Tărāmul, or "The Realm." Trade and diplomatic networks were established with neighboring powers, mostly through short-term wars and raids as the voievozi tested the boundaries of their territories with new armies and military technology. Society Drac society is hard but fair, exhorting great effort from its members but heaping rewards on those who make the cut. The military elite are the top of the social heap. The voievozi prefer to engage in some kind of military enterprise as often as they can, as much for tradition's sake as for the material rewards; many allow and even encourage their forces to serve as mercenaries abroad. Those outside the armies of the voivozi are mostly farmers and craftsmen, with more and more becoming involved in commerce as the Draci push their territorial boundaries and trade networks ever farther into the Mediterranean and central Europe. A central ethos among the Draci is ardere, The Ardor, or The Burning. This term refers to the passionate energy possessed and cultivated by the elite of the Drac people: a smoldering, restless zest for life and great deeds that has driven the voievozi and their people to constant imperialism and exploration, constant seeking of trials and adventure. Some believe ardere to be a literal fire in the blood of the Drac people; others perceive of it more metaphorically, and it is the most beloved cultural trait by far, though it has contributed more than anything to the (not inaccurate) perception of the Draci by outsiders as stubborn, uncouth, aggressive, argumentative, and downright mad. The voievodate are in essence individual military dictatorships, each ruled with an iron fist by its respective voievod, who is the absolute military and civic authority. Below the voievod are ranks of sub-commanders and feudal officials, wealthy nobles, and commoners. Social mobility exists as long as it does not interfere with the military and civic machine; the latter can even be conducive to it at times. Governing the voievodate as a whole is the Synod, the military council of voievozi that decide all foreign and domestic policy concerning Tărāmul as a whole. Military All voievozi equip, train, and manage their own armies from the subjects of their voievodate. While there are regional differences in army makeup, equipment, and especially heraldry, most Drac forces share basic similarities. The standard professional heavy infantryman is equipped with a conical helmet with a spectacle guard, aventail and maille face mask, a hauberk of steel or iron lamellar armor, a broad shield, a long spear, and a sword or axe for closer combat. Dedicated pike regiments forgo shields due to the necessity of both hands to maneuver their weapons, but are as heavily armored. Light infantry are armed with a variety of spears, swords, axes, and bows, and are used primarily for raiding, or for screening the heavy infantry's flanks in battle and harassing enemy forces. The heavy infantry is supported by units of crossbowmen, who are similarly armored and carry heavy pavise shields for portable cover. Light cavalry are deployed as skirmishers, raiders, and scouts. They are typically armed with lances and/or bows, and wear light maille armor. The heavy cavalry are distinguished from the Drac knight in that they are (usually0 not of noble blood. The knight is an individual - a commander, a voievod or family member, with unique armor and heraldry. The heavy cavalry fight en masse, using their massive weight and momentum to break enemy formations. WIP |
