The Republic of Crete

Capital: Chania
Territory: 8,336 km2
Population: circa 100 000
Languages: Greek, Arabic
Officially recognized Religions:
Major: Greek Orthodox, Shia Islam
Minor: Judaism, Maronite Eastern Catholic, Roman Catholic

After fall of Latin Empire, popular uprising against against Venetian rule in Crete accrued in 1289. After final success Republic of Crete was established in 1302.

State is Plutocratic Republic, ruled by Council of Patrons, composed of local patricians.
As number of Muslims in island is almost equal to Christians, 4 of 10 seats in council are reserved for Muslim representatives. Other 5 seats is taken by Greek Orthodox Christians and one is occupied by Chief Rabbi of Crete.
Such composition is was determinate in days of rebellion, then bout Muslims and Orthodoxs joined in fight against Latin rule.
Catholic are not represented in Council, but they religious activities are respected and in all other ways they are equal to other citizens of Crete.

Being in the middle between Constantinople, Alexandria and Italy, Republic of Crete
soon rise as center of trade.
Republic maintain small navy to defend coast and town militia for police duties, but no actual military. History teaches Cretans that on they own they unable to rise army to stand back invasion, but rebels in highlands can make occupation become to costly.
