German Merchants Petition Government to Take Nigeria
Recently, merchants from the Westafrikanischen Handelsunternehmen (West African Trade Company) made an appeal at the Reichstag to declare war on the Kingdom of Nigeria. 5,000 merchants signed a petition calling for a war against the Kingdom of Nigeria. This comes just a week after German merchants were ejected from Lagos and Calabar, the largest ports in Nigeria. The Secretary of War, Generaloberst Engelbert Hermann, supports the idea of a German conquest of Nigeria. He said in an interview with our reporters this morning that, "The Nigerians can no longer remain xenophobic isolationists. They must understand that our brethren are on their border. As Germans, we cannot stand idly by and allow those heathens to get away with a magnanimous travesty such as this. The Kingdom of Nigeria must be invaded and occupied by our troops." Chancellor Otto von Bismarck disagrees, calling for, "a more diplomatic solution to this issue." Kaiser Wilhelm I has not yet made a formal stance on the issue, but this is expected to be announced by the end of the week.

Kaiser Wilhelm Plans to Invade Nigeria

Kaiser Wilhelm has decided to side with the Westafrikanischen Handelsunternehmen, and has voiced his intention to declare war on the Kingdom of Nigeria. At least 250,000 soldiers are preparing for war. Espionage reports from Nigeria indicate that the Nigerian army is significantly smaller than this, and that its men are ill-equipped for war with the German Empire. Even now, some still voice their contempt for the war. Chancellor Otto von Bismarck is the most notable of these voices. He says, "The German Empire needs to look after itself. We must not war with a country so harmless to us as the Kingdom of Nigeria. I hope the German people realize the utter treachery of this war." Kaiser Wilhelm is ignoring Bismarck's pleas, and is continuing with the plans for invasion.

Chancellor Bismarck Resigns

Amid strong opposition from other high-ranking officials, Otto von Bismarck officially stepped down as Chancellor of the German Empire earlier today. This comes as no surprise after the waves of opposition he faced for his anti-expansionist rhetoric. Bismarck's brilliant foreign policy work could not protect him from attacks by Engelbert Hermann, Minister of War, as well as trade company members. Kaiser Wilhelm supports the Chancellor's decision to resign, calling it, "best for all involved." He continued, saying, "Chancellor Bismarck served our country well for many years. While it is unfortunate that he has to leave in such a manner, he will hopefully not remembered for this, and instead hailed as a diplomatic genius." The paper thanks Mr.Bismarck for his long service to the German Empire, and is sad to see him leave.
