Note: If you wish to add something, PM me and I will address it. I feel like there needs to be some sort of standard here. Left and right there's mountain of stories and RP topics that are getting out of hand. So here I'm going to write a list to help people doing this now, hopefully good enough to be stickied. And do not misunderstand. These are guidelines, not straight rules. Follow these for the benefit of other people and to gain respect among your fellow members.Section One: Grammar and Proper Paragraph Formation A big problem with the fanfics and RPs in this topic is the grammar. The most often left out things, and the most irritating, are capitalization and punctuation. If you see a paragraph like this:
There's a problem. Even distancing from the technical level here, the lack of punctuation for starters, makes the thought feel long winded and hasty. There's no rest between thoughts and this can cause confusion and frustration. Don't forget to add transitional words if the space ever looks crowded or hasty. Remember to use this only where needed. Also, 'said' sometimes gets tiring, try to use variety here too in order to keep from being repetitive.
Looking better huh? Now you may be asking why I spaced there when Amy came into play, but don't worry, the answer is simple. A new paragraph is started when a thought is interrupted or a new thought is formed. Since Amy was now the one with the action, the point of view shifts to her, and so, the creation of a new paragraph. Section Two: Basic Rules to Roleplay- Fairness and Possession Everyone wants to be the best and strongest, right? While an entertaining dream, in a forum of multiple free-thinking people, this is not possible. If engaging in a fight with another character, remember these tips. -Your character is yours, and your opponent's belongs to them. This means that they and they alone have the right to decide the effect of an attack on their character. -To address the first rule's shortcoming: while it is true that it is your character and you have the right to decide, consider that it is unfair for you to expect your opponent to take damage willingly while you will not. There must be mutual progress. Take a hit, then hit your opponent. This does not necessarily have to be equal, but at least fair play. -Your character's life is in YOUR hands. Your opponent cannot just kill you or place you in an impossible situation without your consent. Remember you have as many freedoms as your opponent. Overall though, try to avoid excess fighting. And remember, you can't force someone to do something they don't want to do. Section Three: Decency This is listed in the rules but often ignored. Whether they should or not, children do come to these forums. Some things have been done here that children should not be exposed to. Try your hardest to avoid these things, and if you absolutely must do something explicitly violent or otherwise, communicate through PM to keep the boards clean. Secton Four: Script Issues I believe script format should be personally addressed. There's still an ongoing problem with it. While I don't think there should be a rule for it, I do believe there needs to be a standard.
Corny sentence to begin with, I know, but it'll serve my point. While that structure has nothing wrong in itself, there has definitely been a common standard that when in script format, you do not need to go detailed. So here is my suggestion.
(The italics are not needed) While that structure isn't needed, it does help with adding in details for character's actions. (script section written by Mystic) Follow these guidelines, and perhaps the community on Sega can evolve into a friendly and entertaining environment. I did not make this. The Supes did. |

Yes, I could do that. I may make a more detailed guideline for RPing. |
