: Here's the introduction of a little piece I whipped up in my imagination ages ago. This is happening during the last Mahora festival in the manga.

Quote:

"What'cha lookin' at, nee-chan?"

She was knocked out of her reverie by the boy’s voice, recovering with a start, as she turned to face her speaker.

"Uh?" She replied, somewhat inarticulately.

He gave a little snigger, clearly amused, at her response. Her brain now quickly completed catching up to her mouth and she felt the onset of a blush.

Dolt!

"Uh, I mean, nothing I was...uh, looking at nothing," her words were a bit shaky, as she tried to force herself to sound calm, looking down at him with an embarrassed smile, or, perhaps, a smile which was embarrasing.

How she hated these situations.

"Lookin' at nothin', eh? That's an interesting hobby," his voice was still slightly teasing but, at least, he'd stopped sniggering. For now.

"It's not really a hobby, I was just, you know..." by the look of blank incomprehension on his face she assumed he didn't.

Of course you don't. You never stop to think at all do you?

For some reason her stomach suddenly felt very empty. It was a symptom she was used to, by now, experiencing in his presence. Of course, normally she'd be the one forced to instigate a conversation the fact that, this time around, he'd come up to talk to her made her feel somewhat...happy. Somewhat.

"Know what?" Apparently she’d been lost in thought for longer than she’d realized

"Never mind, forget about it," this time her smile was more genuine than awkward.

I wonder what he wanted to talk to me about? She thought; a little excited.

"Yah know ya can be real weird sometimes nee-chan,"

The excitement quickly died as her face faltered.

"But yer real funny."

Maybe it wasn't too bad.

"I...I hardly think I'm funny, K-Kotaro-kun," she put an extra bit of authority into her voice, for whatever good it would do her, as she answered. She wasn't really sure if being called 'funny' constituted a compliment but, she supposed, she'd take it.

"See? Like right now, yer doin it again," he smiled up at her as he gave another small chuckle.

Not for the first time Mei felt herself grow hot under the collar around him. She'd been asked on more than one occasion by her Senpai if there was any kind of...relationship between herself and Kotaro and she'd always denied it. At least verbally. Mentally it was a whole other story and emotionally...well she didn’t even know where to start with that.

So, despite her own verbal testaments, she couldn’t help but laugh with, giving the boy a smile as she did so. His own stupid grin never seemed to leave his face.

"So what ya doin by yerself? Shouldn't yah be with friends enjoyin the festival?"

Mei stopped, mid-laugh, and let her shoulders sag a bit.

Way too ruin the mood.

"Well what about you? I don't see you with anybody?" She shot back before she'd even thought about it, instantly regretting the action.

Dammit mouth!

"Well, actually, I was gonna play with Negi and them but Chizu-nee said I had to stay out of this one for them girl's sakes. And yah always, always do what Chizu-nee tells yah ta do. Especially now." The boy gave a shudder, as if remembering something terrifying, before adopting his more languid posture again.

Oh. So he's on his own today as well.

"I guess there's probably other games or such to try, I was thinkin of finding some till I got hungry. So then I started looking for a place to eat. I found one but then when I got there I realized I don’t have any cash so-" Kotaro went on, rambling a bit, as he explained what he’d gotten up to most of the day. Mei's mind, however, whirred to fast to notice him.

He's on his own. On his own. I could...try to talk to him.

About what? A rebellious little voice in her own head piqued up.

...Training? The response sounded as weak in her head as it would probably have sounded if she'd said it out loud. Then again training was pretty much the only thing she'd ever talked to him about. Sure she got butterflies in her stomach every time he so much as looked her way but, when she thought about it, the only thing she really knew about him was that he was strong, comparatively speaking, and kind of a rascal.

He looks hot grown up.

But that should be irrelevant shouldn't it? I mean do I know anything about him? What food does he like, what's his family like, what does he want to be when he grows up, what's he scared of, anything other than how he trains. I don't know anything about him, really.

So why do I get so...weird around him. Why?

"Anyway I'd hate ta bore ya anymore, or distract yah from staring at nothin,” he sniggered a bit as he said that, “So I'll just get goin so long. Cheer-"

"K-Kotaro-kun," once again her mouth worked before her brain had time to tell it too stop.

He turned to look at her with a questioning expression.

Yes mouth? Anything else you'd like to say?

Her throat suddenly felt dry.

Come on! You can do this. Just say something.

With a deep breath, and clenched toes, she was able to work out a few words past the lump in her throat.

"Want to get some ice-cream with me?"

"Sure," The prompt response, given as if no thought was necessary, bowled her over. All that tension, nervousness and he just said 'okay' as if it was nothing? Talk about anti-climactic.

Would it have been better if he'd said no? Perhaps I'm being a little overdramatic here.

"Ah," a crestfallen look suddenly engulfed his features. Sakura felt her own prospects drop as quickly as his mood changed.

I should have known there'd be a problem.

"If yah remember I said I don't have any cash," he said bashfully, rubbing the back of his head with his hand. She almost wanted to hit him.

"That's fine, I'll pay for you Kotaro-kun," she said, giving an inaudible sigh of relief, as she waved her hand dismissively.

"What? You pay for me? No way!" He stomped his foot down adamantly to make his point; which, considering he was ten-years old, was kind of cute.

"Why not? I got enough money." She brought out her purse to inspect it anyway, making sure she could back up her claim.

"That's not the point...yer a girl. I can't rely on a girl to buy stuff for me," Kotaro looked at her incredulously, as if she'd just made the most obvious mistake in history.

"What? Why not?" Sakura giggled a bit as she asked finding it difficult to take the boy seriously as he got more and more worked up about the issue, his cheeks beginning to turn a bit crimson.

"Because...because," he answered in classic ten-year old fashion.

"You'd let Chizu-nee buy for you wouldn't you," it was a shot in the dark but, judging by the look of embarrassment on his face, it had been right on the mark.

"Th-that's totally different, totally different." He huffed, arms now folded moodily.

"How am I different to her?"

"Do yah really want me to explain that?"

She actually felt a bit offended by that comment.

"Look whether you want it or not I'm gonna buy two and, if someone isn't there to help me finish them, it'll be a huge waste and then we'll both be sorry. So you can either choose to let me buy you one, or you could let me waste money on you for no good reason," she delivered her ultimatum with surety, confident he’d break. She'd been in enough of these kinds of situations before to know how effective it was. Of course, typically, she'd been the one in Kotaro's position. But that wasn't relevant for this conversation.

"F-fine. B-but only if yah let me pay you back when I got the money to do it," Kotaro asserted, trying to salvage a bit of pride.

"Ooh. You drive a hard bargain, but I think I can accept that," she smiled again.

"Fine. In that case what we waiting around here for? Let's go," with the discussion over all his unease seemed to evaporate into excitement as he suddenly rushed ahead, insisting he knew where to go. Before she knew why; she found herself running alongside him with a grin.

You know, after reading Naruto Chaos Mage for so long, you have no idea how glad I am that there's people who keep the characters, well, in character.

I don't think I really keep them in character that well. But thanks for the compliment. :D

Of course so little is seen of Mei in the series that it is easy to keep her in character. It helps to choose people with so little to them because then there is less room for screwing up. At least I think so.

So, is this a one-shot, or is there going to be more? It looks like it could work as either. Introduction implies that more is coming, but in the end its up to whether you decide to write more or not.

Chaos Mage that bad huh? :D

I certainly plan on doing more, should be up by tomorrow, since I always planned for it to go on right until the next day. I’m glad you think it could work. :)

This pairing is woefully underappreciated in my opinion so I can’t give up the fight so quickly. :P

So here is the next part.

Quote:

"Yes, thank you, and he’ll have…” Mei turned to look at Kotaro, indicating it was his turn to speak.

“Gimme chocolate,” the boy eagerly said, rocking back and forth beside her on his feet, earning a polite smile from the vendor before he added, as an afterthought; “Please.”

“What a cute little brother you have,” the woman said politely as she accepted Mei’s money and handed over the frozen treats. Kotaro began salivating at the sight of the ice-cream in Mei’s hand and made a clumsy attempt to grasp it from her but she kept them out of reach.

“Oh no, no he’s not my-“She began but, considering how pointlessly complicated it might make things, she just decided to nod halfway through and agree.

He is kind of cute…for a little brother.

Once Mei had both ice-creams in hand she began to calmly make her way towards an open bench, Kotaro buzzing around her energetically as she took her time, somewhere a bit away from the loud noises of the Festival.

“Come on, come on nee-chan, gimme, I’m starvin’ here,”

“You won’t die if you just wait a minute more,” she repeated yet another cliché she’d often been told herself.

The boy rolled his eyes but stopped complaining, content now to walk alongside her in impatience.

A short while later they found a comparatively quiet spot, with no stalls or vendors nearby, to sit down and enjoy their treats.

“Here you go,” she offered Kotaro his ice-cream and the boy quickly snatched it up and began wolfing it down.

She couldn't help but roll her eyes at this display. When it came to Kotaro there were hardly any surprises anymore. He looked like a thuggish wild child and that was, pretty much, exactly how he acted. When it came to him, for the most part, what you saw is what you got and, right now, he was behaving exactly as she thought he would.

Good grief, what a messy child. She giggled a bit as she watched him go.

“Slow down Kotaro-kun, savour the flavour,” Kotaro looked at her confused, as if not certain what she meant.

Honestly it’s like he’s never been taught how to eat decently. I mean I know he’s part dog or something but that doesn’t mean he has to eat like one.

“Umm…sorry?” He said, cautiously, looking uncharacteristically abashed.

Mei blinked, surprised by the rapid change, taken aback by how compliant he had just been. She'd been expecting a more brattish response.

“Um, do-“she began but was cut off when Kotaro kept talking;

“This is part of them ‘manners’ ain’t it? Chizu-nee’s been kinda teachin me some. I guess it’s good practice to try it now, probably make her happy if I did” longing eyes gazed at the still mostly intact ice-cream; clearly he’d been hoping to have already finished it by now.

“So, er, what’s the right way ta eat ice-cream?” The big round eyes now focused so intently on her only made Mei feel even more nervous.

“Er…Kotaro-kun I think you’re overthinking it. It’s not that there’s a…right or wrong way to eat ice-cream it’s just that, well, you should take a little longer with your food, enjoy it, you know?”

Surely this can’t be that strange? I’m not talking crazy, right? This is just normal stuff.

To her relief something resembling understanding was now flickering across Kotaro’s face, mixed in with some confusion, as he began to tentatively lick at the frozen treat in a gentle way. His tongue slowly tracing across the dribbly brown substance, little goblets of it falling around his mouth. She wandered if Kotaro's tongue felt like a dog's tongue or a human's.

Stop it! Mei pointedly looked away, hiding her face from him, as she tried to dislodge the sensual thoughts now residing within.

That is so wrong. He’s just eating an ice-cream. Get it together girl. You are no pervert

“Is that the right way nee-chan?” chocolate had smudged all around the kid’s lips, and his ice-cream was only about half done, when he turned to Mei with a kind of glowing look.

Seriously? It’s just food, why is he so…

Somewhere in the distance they heard what sounded like a explosion. Most likely, they both thought at the same time, Negi and his class's doing. Unlike the other people nearby, who pretty much all began running to check out the commotion, the two of them merely calmly resumed their conversation.

“Kotaro-kun who exactly feeds you?”

“Chizu-nee does it these days mostly, although sometimes the other two try,” Kotaro looked from side to side suspiciously before he craned in closer, his voice dropping to a whisper;

“Don’t tell them this but they really ain’t got nothin on Chizu-nee's cookin,” Mei couldn’t help but giggle at the seriousness with which he behaved over what, to her, was such a trivial matter. Surely he didn't think two girls were going to beat him up did he?

“Okay, okay, I won’t tell anyone. But, Kotaro-kun, you only came here recently right? Who fed you before that? Who taught you how to eat?”

“Before? Oh…uh, me I guess, I mean that’s what I think. I don't know if anyone taught me how ta eat though,” he gesticulated vaguely as he spoke, an air of bored indifference around him, in between licking his ice-cream.

Mei’s brow furrowed a bit. Judging from that she could already guess the situation. It actually made a lot of sense. It fit nicely into what she already knew about him as well. Growing up a wild child the enjoyment of food probably took a back seat to the actual eating thereof. It helped explained why he was such messy eater, and not just because most ten-year old boys tend to be, it was because he was only recently introduced to all the things people like her took for granted when it came to eating food.

Mei suddenly felt a renewed warmth in her face, but not an unwanted kind this time, as she looked at the boy. She still wasn't sure why she felt so...strange around him but, now, she was certain it wasn't a bad thing.

“What are ya doin?”

Mei’s face froze. Her eyes suddenly recognizing the fact that she’d moved her one hand to pat the top of Kotaro’s head. She hadn’t meant to, at least she didn’t think she had, the hand had just sort of moved on reflex.

“I…ah…I…so sorry,” she blabbered incoherently as she retreated away from him, scooting up further along the bench, her stomach clenching again as blood pumped loud enough for her to hear. She felt mortified.

Oh come on! Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Kotaro continued to look at her with a perplexed expression whilst she, on the other hand, made sure to keep her hands in her lap and her eyes rooted to them. An awkward moment came and, mercifully, passed quite quickly. She was thankful Kotaro didn't snicker or snigger at her. In fact she was actually quite surprised by his lack of reaction at all. After she shifted away he simply kept quiet for a bit, not even touching his ice-cream. Luckily it didn't last long and whatever he was thinking about, since she presumed that was what he had been doing, seemed to escape him as he began to talk loudly again.

“Aren’t ya gonna eat yours?” Mei almost forgot about her own ice-cream but, thankfully, recollected it fast enough to not look like an idiot by asking him what he meant. For this she was thankful; she’d been embarrassed enough today already.

The two sat in a sort of a semi-silence for a while, munching away, whilst occasionally Kotaro would make some sort of quip and she’d respond with a nod or polite smile, giggling along. It wasn’t wholly uncomfortable in fact, she had to admit, that it was kind of nice. She didn’t know many people who she could just sit silently next too and not feel awkward about it. In fact she didn't really know anyone, not even her older sister.

But this isn’t what I wanted. I got to say something, talk to him. I like doing this, it’s…fun. So I got to say something.

She opened her mouth to speak when, once again, she was interrupted. Clearly Chizu-nee had not done that good a job teaching him manners.

“Thanks for the treat, I really appreciate it. Like I said though I’ll get you my share of the price as soon as possible, so don’t go forgettin about it, right?” He got up, clearly ready to go, still harping on about paying his due back.

“Kotaro-kun wait,” her eyes were looking down, straight at the floor she talked. The lump in her throat was back and she was battling past it with all her life experience to get her words out.

What would Onee-sama do? Strange that she'd think of that in this situation.

“Nee-chan…are you sure yer feelin alright?” Uncertainty and concern were mixed in equal portions in his voice. It was actually kind of touching.

Mei took a big gulp of air and lifted her face, looking at the boy straight on.

“Would you…kindly…”

Kotaro’s brow furrowed as the words came out steadily.

Mei clasped her hands tight in her own lap for support.

“Go on a…date with me?”

Unfortunately, Negima as a whole is underappreciated in the fanfiction scene. Such a pity, because there's so much potential for greatness in Mahora...

Incidentally, if you want to know how bad NCM really is, just read our reviews of it. We're suffering!

But didn't they just go on a date?

As for NCM, I find the easiest way to avoid suffering is to just report what's happening without thinking about it. Although that's much easier said than done.

@IAmNotCreativeEnough: I'll check those out then.

@Hyp3rB14d3: As Rikalous says Kotaro obviously didn't think it constituted one (Didn't even cross his mind). He just though that Mei was helping him get a treat because she's a polite person. To be honest Mei didn't think it was a date either she thought it was more like getting to know a friend. It just happened to become something different. :)

There are more than enough couplings in Negima which have the female constantly nervous around the guy she crushes on (or girl) so what I wanted to do was have a couple where, although they are sometimes nervous, they can also just hang out as friends together without romance hanging over their heads. Of course since I like the couple I still wanted it to get ship tease-like at parts but that is just my fault. To be honest I chose Mei and Kotaro for this pretty much because both are hardly characters (I still like them best though) and have some vaguely implied attraction to each other meaning I could bend it whatever way I imagined would be best.

Oh no, sorry, all I mean is that they aren't very depthful, as in have character changes or arcs. They are both characters where what you see is pretty much all you get, ya know? You can't really 'dig' much deeper into them.

Obviously Kotaro gets a lot more 'role' in the story, comparable to the girls of 3-A, but like a...say Kaede there isn't that much nuance to him.

Of course this is just my opinion on the matter. :D Feel free to disagree. :D I don't bite. :P

Also I should note that not being a 'depthful' character isn't necessarly a bad thing. It just means they aren't very complicated.

I hope that helped clear up the confusion. :D

You could use the same logic to claim that Goku wasn't much of a character in Dragonball.
