Kuro wins the war, of course.

Once Anya arrives, she'll probably start gravitating more towards Ilya than towards Negi, at least.

Right.
I kinda want to give Nekane her own filler chapter, maybe to show her unavoidable run-in with Tuxedo Kamen...

Maybe the next one can be a chapter devoted to everyone BUT the main cast? We catch up on the other sideplots? Like, the BLEACH crew somehow finished the Soul Society Arc Already, Keima is up to finding goddesses, etc...
BTW, I heartily recommend Gatchaman Crowds. It's awesome.

Probably takes place a bit ahead of the current chapter, while Negi and those closest are spending the Golden Week at Ayaka's island.

Chaos Mage... Unequally Style!
It was always nice to visit the old town every once in a while. True, it also was a bit of a shame missing on most of the clss' trip to Iinchou's tropical paradise, but the family was the family.
Kaede's parents, as always, had pestered her a bit on her leaving that outdated Ninja lifestyle and settle down, maybe to take over the bakery, but it seemed they weren't trying too hard anymore. She had decided not telling them about Negi or the whole affair at Kyoto, but she thought it should be fine to share it with Kakashi-sensei and Uzumaki-sempai as long as she ommited most of the bits with Negi, and his whole identity as a mage.
Kakashi-sensei seemed to piece most of the rest of the story together anyway, but it always was hard to tell with him. At some point, he asked about Takahata, and although it came to kind of a surprise for Kaede they'd know each other, something neither had ever mentioned in her presence, she still gave a standard truthful answer before heading off to visit Uzumaki-sempai.
After all the crises that had ravaged the town in the recent years, Uzumaki-sempai had become sort of a local hero, and maybe, with the passage of the years, he'd manage his dream of becoming the Hokage someday. Many opined the rank itself would soon disappear, with the slow but steady integration of the secret villages to modern society and the decay of the ninja system of yore in the age of the mutant and metahuman mercenaries, but Uzumaki-sempai was fairly sure not only the rank would regain its former glory, but he'd be the one pushing it back to greatness.
All in all, however, his victories had actually made Uzumaki-sempai humbler. When he was a kid and Kaede was just a pintsized annoyance following him along Konohamaru-kun and the others, he was incredibly prone to boasting and making up those bullshit stories about finding fabled scrolls in the trash and someday creating his own Fuuhen clan, and becoming powerful enough for the Hokage to follow his every advice, but after fighting in the War, a veritable Secret War that just barely passed under the Japanese government's eyes (sometimes, they actually remembered being ninjas involved keeping a stealthy profile even while dying by the hundreds), his experiences had made him more down to earth, less stupidly bombastic.
After eating together, and after listening to Kaede's stories, he had nodded, complimented her with a wide grin, and caustically reminded her of how he had done SO MUCH MORE when he had been Kaede's age. Kaede, as usual, had just smiled and promised she'd strive for greater heights.
"So," he asked while pouring himself another cup of his drink, "Not any boys yet?"
"This one doesn't have the time for that just yet, de gozaru," she honestly replied. Her mind quickly squashed the treacherous self-reminder on how Tatsumiya certianly didn't count as a boy, not that she'd ever want to tap that. "How are things going, by the way, with Hinat--"
"I don't have the time just yet, either!" he quickly dodged the bullet. "I'm too busy writing my first book, the next step on my nonstop way to leadership! Believe it!"
She sighed inwardly. Still with the same silly catchphrase. But just like a real ninja, she hid her mild annoyance. She had a lot of practice lately, dealing with the REAL annoyance from Tatsumiya. Whom she didn't want to tap. "A book? Don't tell this one you are writing that--"
He chuckled, pulling out a thick notebook packed even fuller with clipped extra pages, to the point it looked like it'd start bursting any moment now. "Yep, of course! I'm up to Chapter Forty by now!"
"You haven't advanced that much since last time you showed it to me..."
"You can't hurry up perfection!"
"By 'perfection', this one assumes you still don't see the need to do those rewrites?"
"My biography is perfect as it is!" he said, fanning himself with the book.
Well, other than all the gross inacuracies, facts gotten wrong, hints about being liked by girls who never really thought about him, and just plain hideous grammar and writing style, I suppose it is, Kaede pondered. She at least found some comfort on Sakura-sempai's promise to edit the thing out IF it ever got done. Most likely in ways involving hitting Uzumaki-sempai with the book. Hopefully she wouldn't involve too much Uchiha-sempai worship to make up for it.
And speaking of that...
Uzumaki-sempai stood up, his face growing serious. "Want to visit him before you have to go back?"
Kaede nodded in silence.
He smiled, more softly this time. "Good. Let's go, then."
They walked quietly across the streets Kaede barely recognized anymore until reaching the small site near the riverbank. Kakashi-sensei used to train around there with his disciples, whenever he remembered to train them and got there in what passed for 'in time', anyway, and so, they had decided it was as good a place as any other for Uchiha-sempai.
Often, Kaede, who would follow them around with the hopes of learning something and a drive that would have made Tsunetsuki-sempai proud, would eat with them near the river. Uzumaki-sempai would joke with her, Sakura-sempai would trive to give her advice she thought wise, and Uchiha-sempai would just sit there silently, never really acknowledging Kaede's presence.
Just as silent as he was now.
Uzumaki-sempai smiled just a bit sadly, with his hands in his pockets. "You know... it's kinda funny, actually, how after spending so long to bring him back... I'd actually like it if he could escape again right now..."
Kaede mused, "Escapes are not needed or wanted when you have achieved peace at last."
"I guess not," Uzumaki-sempai conceded.
They stood before the grave in silence until the sky began growing dark.

Meanwhile, in Soul Society...
"All right Uchiha, I'll say this again," Aizen said, as he sat on the younger man's head. "I'm STRONGER THAN YOU! Quit trying to take over by trying to kill me! It doesn't work like that!"
Thank goodness this fic has an interesting afterlife.

When we last saw Negi, he was going to train under Ku Fei in preparations for his upcoming test fight against Chachamaru, and Natsumi promised going to cheer him up, sorry Makie, but you've been plot-hijacked here. That takes us to...
- Quote:

Due to Ayaka powdering herself up and taking more care with her clothes than necessary, she, Natsumi and Chizuru arrived when Negi already was being tested by Ku, while Chisame and Chamo sat at the sidelines of the empty lot near the World Tree. Ayaka gasped aloud, barely restraining herself from jumping to her beloved teacher's help as soon as she noticed the Chinese girl was overwhelming him despite his best attempts to keep on blocking and dodging.
"Hya!" Ku said, connecting another punch to Negi's right arm, making him wince but not cry. "I told you, Negi-bouzou, you good, and learn fast, but it's impossible, to learn all before your fight-aru! You should ask for a delay!"
"How... How big a delay?" he asked, still trying, with only moderate success, to keep up with her. He would have felt much worse about it had he known Ku was barely trying.
Ku frowned as she thought about it, feigning a punch to Negi's face, and when he blocked that, punching him in the chest instead. "Two months," she calculated.
"I can't! Evangeline-san would never accept that!" he gulped.
Natsumi pouted while sitting down next to a sighing Chisame. "I still don't understand why Evangeline-san's approval is so important for him. What could she know about fighting, anyway?"
Ayaka folded her arms and said reluctantly, "Don't be fooled by her frail appearance, Natsumi-chan. Evangeline-san is... quite skilled in self-defense."
"Seriously?" the actress asked. "Chizu-nee, did you know about that?"
"No, not really," Chizuru said, sitting at Natsumi's other side, with a bento box on her lap. "But then, it doesn't surprise me either. I always have felt there is a lot more about Evangeline-chan than is apparent."
Chisame gave Ayaka a discreet questioning look, one that was ignored completely as the Class Rep chewed on a suddenly tear-stained handkerchief, eyes nailed on how Ku swept Negi's feet under, then pressed a foot down on his chest, both panting and sweating. Okay, she barely was panting and sweating. But still.
"That enough for now," Ku Fei told him, pulling the foot back and smiling. "You can't train good with a tired body-aru. Besides, looks like Iinchou and the girls brought something for you!"
"Huh?" he blinked, looking aside to finally notice the presence of the three newcomers. Chizuru waved happily, while Natsumi sputtered a greeting and Ayaka all but jumped on him to hug him tightly.
"Oh, m-- our poor Negi-sensei! You don't have to push yourself this hardly! Ku-san!" she gave the Baka Yellow an angry glare. "I swear, if you end up injuring him, I'll make sure--!"
"It's okay, I won't be injured!" Negi was fast to say. "And yes, I do need to do this, Iinchou-san. Glad to see you three, but, um, didn't you have--"
"Oh, skipping one day of our respective clubs won't do us any harm!" Chizuru told him. "Although, I understand it's more of a serious situation with Ayaka lately..."
"The English Research Society takes priority over the Equestrian Club!" the blonde quickly handwaved the issue away, leading Negi to the open-air seats while Ku followed them whistling. Before Ayaka could lovingly wipe the sweat off his forehead, Chisame handed him a small towel, which he used to dry himself after a short but heartfelt thanks. The Class Representative made a silent but noticeable pout, which only grew as Chizuru took the chance to place the bento box into his hands, something that didn't sit exactly well with Natsumi either.
"Here you have, Sensei!" Naba said. "The girls and me made this for you! It has all the nutrients needed for a young man in intense physical training!"
"Oh? Ah, thank you!" Negi nodded. "Chisame and me were going to have dinner at the Chao Bao Zi after this, but..."
Chisame shrugged dryly. "Never mind. It'd be a waste rejecting this, wouldn't it? So dig in."
He blinked. "Oh, but you haven't eaten yet either, why don't we split it..."
"Oh, no, it's all yours. I'm sure it wasn't cooked with me in mind, anyway..."
"Don't say that," Negi smiled gently, opening the box to reveal a surprisingly large amount of food that nearly spilled out like a gastronomic Jack-in-the-Box. "See? There's more than enough for two! And I'm sure the girls won't mind at all, will you, Iinchou-san, Murakami-san, Naba-san?"
Ayaka made a pause before laughing, "Oh, ho ho ho! Certainly not, Negi-sensei!"
Chizuru put her hands together and smiled saintly. "True! We are all friends here after all, aren't we?"
Natsumi deflated with a sigh. "Of course..."
Negi and Chisame were already eating together, not at Standard Shonen Hero pace, but certainly far from Prim and Proper Idol pace or Perfect English Gentleman pace.
Ku looked at the three mildly flabbergasted recent visitors and asked, "So, did you bring seconds?"
"Ah?" Ayaka looked back at her.
"The Chao Bao Zi is that way, as you should know better than anyone," Chizuru quietly added.
Natsumi facepalmed. "This isn't going the way I expected at all. I don't know how it could be worse..."
Somewhere else, Sasaki Makie rolled on her side on her bed, with huge blank eyes. "Ugugugu, I'm so much fail, Ninomiya-sensei is right... Oh, if only my roommate was here, or I had someone else to rely onto..."
Yet somewhere else, Ako looked from the dinner Akira and her were sharing in their room. "Something wrong?" asked the swimmer.
"Why do I feel like I'm badly failing someone?" Ako wondered sedately.
Akira nearly rolled her eyes to herself, being so nice being the only thing preventing her from completing the motion. Lovable as Ako was, she had so many unfounded traumas...

Yes, but not at this point. I have moved that up ahead. Makie's relationship with Negi needs more buildup first, but then, setting that buildup right here would have made this miniarc too much like canon's.
