Location of fic

Author page including links to pactio cards

TVTropes page (assuming it lasts)

Right. I thought that maybe I should also have a thread for my fic.

This way we can discuss it where IANCE can choose to ignore it or debate with me in a more organised fashion. :P

Either way, feel free to ask qustions, comment or otherwise discuss.

Fear me!
When's the next chapter coming up? I'm guessing that you're going to want me to proofread it.

Should still be a while. I've had a few IRL issues, so I'm still early in the chapter. But when it's ready, I would definitely appreciate your proofreading.

EDIT: Word count puts me at roughly a fifth of the way through the chapter unless I decide to have a short chapter which is possible, but based on previous experience, unlikely.

I realise that you have the power. Just thought that my fic might be better here than having arguments clogging up other threads. :)

Is it wrong that after reading IANCE's post, I imagined the "new weapon" screen from Megaman, with the ability named "douchebag" and the weapon demonstration as Megaman egging a house?

Of course not. Nothing is wrong. Nothing is right. Everything is permitted.

Okay, I've got the raw version of what chapter 23 looks like so far here. I'm not going to put in the effort to reforma here as this is mainly backup, but I decided to join everyone in archiving my work here:

Quote:

“So Kotaro-kun, what did you think of your sister’s play?” asked Ayaka.
“I’d have preferred it if she was on for more.” replied Kotaro as they walked away from the seating area. “It made the rest of the play pointless if she wasn’t in t.”
“Come now Kotaro-kun.” Ayaka scolded him. “Just because the rest of the play didn’t include her, doesn’t mean that she didn’t contribute to it. You should enjoy the whole. Now, earlier we were discussing the possibility of me becoming your partner. Seeing as though we’re not rushing off to see a play now and I apparently have my future self covering my duties at our class, we can continue to discuss it now.”
“But Ayaka-nee-san, I really don’t think that this is a good idea!” Kotaro whined.
“How could it be a bad idea?” asked Ayaka. “Anya-sensei and Negi-san both have multiple partners and you don’t have any yet. I don’t see how you getting one could be a problem and I’ll be a perfect partner for you! So, let’s do it!  In fact, why don’t we do it right now?”
“We can’t do it right now.” Kotaro sighed. “It needs a magic circle and Chamo-kun is the only one who knows how to draw one.”
“Chamo-kun!?” asked Ayaka. “Anya-sensei’s pet?”
“Yes.” replied Kotaro.
“Well, where would we find him?” asked Ayaka whose eyes were still rounded.

“Negi and Anya asked if I could help them with the World Tree patrol.” shrugged Kotaro. “We were planning to meet there, so that’s where they’ve probably gone.”
“Then let’s meet them.” said Ayaka. They headed off in the direction of The World Tree.

Meanwhile, Kazumi and Sayo stared at the ghost’s artifact. “It looks like Kotaro-kun and Iinchou have just left Anya’s play and that Iinchou knows about magic now.”
“So, what do we do?” asked Sayo.
“Chao warned us that Iinchou would know what was written on your artifact if she came close to it, so we should put it away when we approach her.” replied Kazumi.
“But then how would we find Kagurazaka-san?” asked Sayo.
Kazumi pointed to a higher point on the scroll. “Look. She’s talking to Negi-kun. So they’re together. And so are Hasegawa-san, Sakurazaki-san and the librarians.”
“Shouldn’t we go there to make sure that Negi-kun doesn’t make a pactio with Hasegawa-san?” asked Sayo.
“Well, it seems that they’re also going to The World Tree like Kotaro-kun predicted.” Kazumi shrugged. “So we just need to get Anya-chan. I doubt that they’ll make a pactio in the time it takes for us to fetch her.”
A new line appeared at the bottom of the scroll. “Anya-sensei: I may have never been to one before, but I’m sure that that was the creepiest. Circus. Ever!”
“That’s convenient.” Kazumi smiled. She then pulled out a gadget. Chao had designed it to look identical to Kazumi’s cell phone, but the display merely provided an arrow, a distance and an elevation. “Let’s go find her.”
“Abeat!” said Sayo.

With Chao’s locator, it was simple to find Anya. “Hello, Anya-chan!” Kazumi greeted her.
“Hi Kazumi. Hi Sayo.” Anya replied.
“We heard about your deal with Chao-san.” said Sayo.
“You did!?” asked Anya as her eyes widened.
“Our artifacts and contact network make these things easy to find out.” explained Sayo. “Besides, it’s not a secret from your partners is it? Most of them already know.”
“I suppose.” replied Anya. “Setsuna doesn’t trust Chao though. You didn’t find evidence that she’s doing anything bad did you?”
“She’s a pretty private person.” replied Kazumi. “But we knew that already and the same could be said about Tatsumiya-san who has helped us more than once. I don’t think that she’s a bad person.”
“Then I’ll stick with my decision to trust her.” Anya frowned. “And I guess that that means that I should help Asuna train, as she asked then.”
“Well, you could get Kagurazaka-san’s help at The World Tree.” suggested Kazumi with a shrug.
“You know about that?” asked Anya with a raised eyebrow.
“Of course.” Kazumi grinned.
“It’s not a bad idea though.” Anya said as she touched her chin “In fact, I may as well recruit Fei and Kaede as well. They’ve agreed to help as well and have some experience with this. They’ll make up their missed activities when we repeat today.”

As he approached The World Tree, Kotaro lifted his head and began to sniff.
“What are you doing?” asked Ayaka with a frown. “That isn’t appropriate behaviour. Especially for a public festival.”
“I’m tracking the others.” replied Kotaro. “I’ve got a good sense of smell and Negi has a rather distinctive scent. Follow me.” He grabbed her arm and led her around the tree until they reached the group consisting of Negi, Asuna, Chisame, Setsuna, Chamo and the librarians.
“There you all are.” Kotaro said. “Ayaka-nee-san knows about magic.”
“I know.”Chisame sighed.
“What!?” cried Kotaro as most of the eyes present widened in shock.
“She somehow overheard a telepathic conversation between Anya and I this morning.” Chisame explained. “I’d have discussed this, but I was preoccupied by other things, such as mind-controlling trees! Not to mention that I didn’t want to think about it in the first place! I had plans for today!”
“W-well, if we’re g-going to use time travel, then you could-“
“No. Don’t say anymore.” Yue interrupted Nodoka. “We mustn’t say anything that could be construed as an order here. We’ve seen that that turns out badly. Is there a safe place where we can discuss this?”
“There are some buildings close by which are safe.” replied Negi. “I’ll lead you to them.”

“This should be safe.” announced Negi as he shut the door of the building that they had just entered.
“Then it should be safe to talk now.” said Yue.
“Good.” said Ayaka. “Because as the class representative, it is unacceptable that I should remain uninvolved!”
“But Ayaka-san,” began Negi, “I don’t want to involve more students than necessary. This could become dangerous!”
“All the more reason for me to become involved!” replied Ayaka. “As the class representative, I should be responsible for the safety of the class! And I hear that Kotaro-kun doesn’t have a partner yet? While you and Anya-sensei have several? Clearly Kotaro-kun needs a responsible person like myself to be his partner!”
Chamo perked up at the sound of that. “Really Iin-chan?” he asked. Ayaka’s eyes fluttered in surprise despite being warned about the ermine’s ability to talk. “I’d normally prefer to get Negi-aniki another partner, but I’m perfectly happy to give Kotaro-aniki a helping hand.”
“I still don’t think this is a good idea.” said Kotaro. “I’m an Eastern mage, not a Western mage. I’ve got my goki and zenki to rely on. Using a girl to protect me seems a little unmanly and cowardly.”
“I thought that we’d been through this already.” Yue scolded him.
“Well, yeah.” Kotaro shrugged. “I see now that partners can be useful and that girls can be strong fighters. But still, for Ayaka-neesan to defend me. It seems like it should be the other way around.”
“A mage and their partner should work together.” said Chamo. “They’re a team.”
“Don’t you trust me, Kotaro-kun?” asked Ayaka as she clutched her fists over her chest. “Or do you think that I’m unworthy? I’m hurt! I’m a martial artist capable of holding my own against Asuna, after all!”

“You can hold your own against Asuna-neesan!?” asked Kotaro as his eyes widened.
“Of course!” replied Ayaka as she raised her nose into the air.
“It’s true.” sighed Asuna.
“Then there should be no objection, right?” asked Ayaka.
“But still…” said Kotaro as he scratched the back of his face and his cheeks reddened, “for me to make a pactio with Ayaka-neesan would be…embarrassing.”
“Why would it?” asked Ayaka as she began to frown. “If Anya-sensei and Negi-san have done it so many times, it should be fine, shouldn’t it?”
“You have no idea how to make a pactio, do you?” Chisame sighed as she covered her face with her palm.
“No, but it can’t be anything bad, can it?”
“Of course it’s nothing bad!” cried Chamo as he scampered to the floor. “All you have to do is stand in a magic circle and kiss!” He puckered his lips.

“Kiss!” cried Ayaka as she grasped her chest. “Are you serious!?”
“Of course!” said Chamo. “Just a little kiss.”
“But...how can you kiss someone that you aren’t married to?” asked Ayaka. “It’s...scandalous! A kiss is a declaration of love! Shouldn’t we get married before making such a commitment?!”
“I think you’ve got that the wrong way round.” muttered Chisame.
“A kiss is normally given fairly early in a romantic relationship and is far from exclusive to those.” said Yue. “Did you think that we were all married?”
“Well...now that you say so...” began Ayaka.
“See!?” said Chamo indicating Yue. “A kiss is no big deal.”
“I wouldn’t go that far.” said Yue.
“But...for me to kiss Kotaro-kun...” began Ayaka before suddenly covering her nose as her skin paled and her eyes became woozy.
“It’s fine!” said Kotaro as he stood tall. “I don’t need a pactio. So if Ayaka-neesan doesn’t want to do it, I’ll manage by myself!”
“Come on!” complained Chamo. “I’ve already finished making a pactio circle!” How he made those things so quickly was a mystery.
“You did that after they had decided not to!” Chisame accused him.
“Well what about you, Nodoka-neesan?” asked Chamo.
“Oh, I-I don’t w-want to kiss Kotaro-kun!” she squealed as she threw up her arms and blushed.
“No, no!” said Chamo as he waved his paws. “That’s not what I mean.”
“That’s right!” gasped Negi. “You wanted a pactio from me! I already said that I can give you something as an apology! If that’s what you want, then I can give you that! You’re already coming to the magical world, so there’s no more harm done.”
“W-well I...” began Nodoka as her blush deepened.
“What!?” cried Ayaka as she suddenly rose to full height despite the fact that she had just seemed like she was about to faint. “What’s this Miyazaki-san!? Are you trying to seduce Negi-san?!”
“N-no...”
“Negi-san is getting another partner!?”
“Two more that we know of.” muttered Chisame.
“What!?”
“Apparently, Makie-nee is getting one as well.” Chamo replied.
“How do you know this?” asked Ayaka.
“She told us that she got one from future Negi.” Chisame sighed.
“This discrepancy between number of partners is getting too high!” Ayaka complained.
“Well, he’ll still have fewer than Anya-chan, so what’s the problem?” Haruna grinned. “Besides, did you see the pactio? Maybe Makie was lying?”
“You shouldn’t doubt your classmates like that, Saotome-san.” Negi frowned.
“Wait! You can see them?” asked Ayaka. Haruna pulled out her card. “...But, future me had a card as well...” she started swaying. “This means that my bond with Kotaro-kun is destiny!” She pulled Kotaro into the circle. “Come Kotaro-kun! Our fate is written in the stars! Let it come true!” She knelt down and kissed him.
“Pactio!” cried Chamo as the others shielded their eyes from the intense light. Ayaka collapsed as a card fluttered down onto her chest.

“I guess that I better help Iinchou-han.” said Konoka, pulling out her wand.
“And what about you, Nodoka-neesan?” asked Chamo.
“I-I don’t...” began Nodoka.
“This is your chance, Nodoka!” said Haruna as she pushed her forward. “Don’t you want to help Negi-kun?”
Nodoka’s face hardened with resolve and she said, “Yes. I do.”
“Then let’s get to it!” cried Chamo. Nodoka and Negi walked into the circle as Kotaro carried Ayaka, bridal-style, out of it and towards Konoka.
“I’d actually like to see this first.” Konoka grinned. “I’ll get to heal Iinchou-san right afterwards.”
Negi and Nodoka slowly reached forward before their lips touched.
“Pactio!” cried Chamo as they were bathed in purple light and a card dropped to the floor.
“Now, I can heal you!” grinned Konoka as she raised her wand.

“Kenko to unmei. Ab somno haut deliberato tuae, excitare nova. Excitabar novum.” said Konoka as she waved her wand over Ayaka. Golden, glowing sparkles fell from the wand and onto Ayaka who sat upright as her eyes opened.
“What happened?” she asked.
“You fainted after kissing Kotaro-kun.” replied Chamo. “And you got one of these.” He handed her one of the recently duplicated cards.
“I’ll cherish it forever!” cried Ayaka as she clutched it to her chest.
“Come on, Nodoka, Iinchou, show us what they do!” Haruna demanded.
“What must I do?” asked Ayaka.
“Hold out you card and say, ‘Adeat!’” Chamo explained.
Ayaka got to her feet as Chamo passed Nodoka her own card.
“Adeat!” they cried.
Nodoka’s card transformed into a book. At the same time, Ayaka was dressed in an elegant, blue ballroom dress and tiara with high-heeled shoes as her card turned into a pair of glasses. Nodoka, when presented with a book, followed her instincts and opened it.
“I got a book, just like Yue-Yue got last time. That’s nice. I like books. And kissing Negi-san felt very nice. I’m glad that I’m helping him. I wonder if it would feel more nice if I kissed him for lon-“ said the book before Nodoka snapped it shut.
“Should I wear these?” asked Ayaka. She put on the glasses before the door opened.
“I found them!” Kazumi called before turning back towards the others through the now open door.
“Asakura-san? What are you doing here?” asked Ayaka. “And tell us who you’re talking too!”
Kazumi’s eyes flashed. “I was talking to Anya-sensei, Ku Fei-san and Nagase-san.” She replied.

With that, the three girls she mentioned appeared at the door. “There you are!” said Anya. “What have you been up to here?! Why is there a pactio circle on the...?! Chamo!”
“The extra artifacts could prove useful.” he protested with a shrug. Anya glared at him and then at Ayaka.
“So, now you’ve also kissed Negi?!” she asked.
“Actually, I kissed Kotaro-kun.” replied Ayaka. “And even if I had, it would still be fewer than you. Remind me, how many pactios have you made?”
Anya’s eyes flashed. “Eight”
“Exactly.” replied Ayaka. “So, don’t be judgemental about someone else making a pactio with me.”
Anya’s eyes flashed again.  “Okay. I accept that.”
“So, what does your artifact do?” asked Asuna.
“I’m not sure.” replied Ayaka as she removed her glasses.
Anya’s scowl returned the instant Ayaka removed her glasses. Kazumi also resumed her original expression.
“What did you do to me!?” Anya shrieked.
“I just spoke to you.” Ayaka replied in confusion.
“And I had to do what you said!” Anya cried.
“Well, that answers what Iinchou-chan’s artifact does.” replied Chamo. “It’s very impressive.”
“I didn’t know!” Ayaka gasped, looking down at her glasses.
“Remember that artifacts are meant to be weapons.” Chamo explained. “You’ll find that far more useful when facing an enemy.”
“You’ve been making pactios since I was gone?” asked Kazumi. “How many?”
“Two.” repied Chamo. “Iinchou-chan and Nodoka-neesan.”
Kazumi breathed a sigh of relief. “I don’t think that we should make more though. We should use the time machine to help guard The World Tree.”
“Yes. That’s the reason that we came here!” said Anya.
“I have to perform my own duties!” Ayaka said. “I haven’t been manning our stall!”
“And I’ve got my own life as well!” added Chisame.
“I remember meeting myself. We have to go the empty classroom near our stall. That’s where we need to activate the time machine. I know, because I saw us there!”
(/)
“And we have to do the jump in this classroom?” asked Chisame as she walked through the door.
“Of course!” replied Ayaka. “This was where I met all of us, after all.” She closed the door, blocking the view of anyone who walked down the corridor. “We’re ready when you are, Negi-san.”
“We’re going to time travel again!” Negi squealed as he clicked the Cassiopeia. The room distorted into a whirlwind of blurry shadows and vague forms before resettling.
After the room settled, Anya’s voice filled Chisame, Anya and Ayaka’s heads.
"Chisame! We need to talk to you! You'll never believe what happened!"
Chisame pulled out her card in irritation and placed it on her head before saying, “Telepathia. I already know. You were sent into the past by a time machine. Meet Chao-san on the airship and she'll tell you how to use it. But Iinchou can hear this conversation so my past self has to explain this to her.”
“Ayaka can hear!? What do you mean!?" asked the voice.
“Never mind! Just trust me on this! And don't use telepathy! It's really annoying having to hear this conversation over and over again!” replied Chisame’s own voice in their minds.
Anya’s voice replied with a, “Um…Okay. Bye."
Chisame lowered the card. “Now what do we do?” she asked.
“We wait.” Ayaka replied. She sat down at a desk. “It will still be a while before Kotaro-kun and myself get here.”
“Then what was the point of travelling back this far?” asked Chisame.
“It’s safer to get here before we start letting people through in case they hear something.” Ayaka replied. “Besides, you needed to have that conversation with yourself. And apparently, you’re not finished with it yet.”
“Great.” growled Chisame.
“And this means more time for Asuna to practice.” added Kazumi.
“Do you really think that she can be quiet enough?” asked Ayaka. “She’s too much of an ape to show restraint.”
“We’ll see how quiet you are when I’m done with you!” cried Asuna as she lunged forward, only to be stopped by Ku Fei and Kaede.
“See what I mean?” asked Ayaka.
“I can help with that!” Konoka squealed as she pulled out a wad of paper strips.

She sat down on a chair and placed the strips on the desk along with a bottle of ink and a brush. She then dipped the brush in the ink and wrote on a strip before picking it up, walking up to the door and pressing it against the door. “Charm-san, Charm-san, bar the sound from leaving this room. Owarasu oto.” she said. “Now we don’t have to worry about anyone hearing us. So Asuna can carry on practicing and I can make some more charms to help protect the area around the tree.”
“And we can see what the new artifacts can do!” added Haruna with a grin.
“Well, it seems that Iinchou-chan’s let’s her control people with orders.” Chamo said. “A very powerful ability.”
“Yes, it seems as though you’re right.” Ayaka nodded.
“But we haven’t seen what Nodoka’s does yet!” Haruna complained. “It’s a book, right? Well, open it! What does it say?” She grabbed one of the covers.
“I’m also interested in that.” Yue admitted as she turned towards Nodoka.
“Come on, Honya! Let us see!” begged Haruna as she pulled the cover open. Nodoka quickly covered Haruna’s eyes with one of her hands.
“N-no, please...!” Nodoka said.
“Don’t fight!” Negi asked them.
“What is it, Nodoka?” asked Yue.
“W-well, Yue...” began Nodoka. Then she noticed the contents of the book suddenly change.

The book wrote, “20th of June, Friday (Yue), I wonder what Nodoka’s artifact does. It’s a book like mine, but it looks different and she’s reacting very strangely.” Nodoka’s eyes widened.
“What does it say?” asked Haruna.
Nodoka quickly snatched it away from the nosy mangaka.
“Nodoka seems to be very private with the contents of the book. But why would that be? It’s a weapon to help Negi-san isn’t it? My book helped Anya-sensei when we had to fight Chachamaru-san. Surely this book would also be useful? Surely it would be good for or team?”
“No!” cried Nodoka. “It’s not good! It’s bad!” She slammed the book shut.
“What are you t...” began Yue before her eyes widened. “You can read minds?!”
Nodoka nodded.
Sayo glanced at Kazumi in panic to see that the reporter had paled and her eyebrows had risen, but she quickly arranged her face into a more neutral expression.
“That’s a very powerful ability!” exclaimed Chamo as he scampered over. “It’s a sign that you are very compatible! You’ll be an excellent partner!”
Anya scowled. “It’s not that incredible.”
“Think of all the juicy secrets you could find out!” squealed Haruna as she leaned in closer.
“N-no! I can’t pry into other people’s thoughts.”
“How does your artifact work?” asked Kazumi.
“I-I just said Yue’s name and it wrote her thoughts in the diary.” replied Nodoka. “Before then, it was j-just my own thoughts.”
“I guess that Honya-chan was given such a powerful object because she can be trusted with it.” Chamo hypothesised. “She’d only use it to help her magister and not for interfering with other people’s lives.”
“Then isn’t the same true of me?” asked Ayaka. “Surely for me to be granted such a power so easy to abuse is a sign of my trustworthiness?”
“Well, I have heard of artifacts with mind-controlling capabilities being used for less than scrupulous purposes before, so I’m not sure how well that applies here.” said Chamo.
Ayaka scowled at him.
“Plus, your pactio has an aurum tonus, which is the sign of a partner capable of being granted extremely powerful artifacts, so we shouldn’t be surprised at how powerful yours is.”
“Then, surely that is a mark of a great partner as well?” asked Ayaka.
“Yes, a partner with an aurum tonus is a rare quality.” agreed Chamo. “It might be worth making more pactios with you.”
“Weren’t we going to help Asuna practice?” asked Kazumi. “Surely now is the best time for that, rather than making more pactios?”
“That’s right!” Anya exclaimed with enthusiasm, eager to change the subject. “Setsuna, come help Asuna practice!”
“And if we’re going to help defend the World Tree, then I need to prepare as well.” said Konoka. She pulled out a pair of scissors and began writing on her strips of paper and cutting out charms.

Ayaka watched as Asuna sparred with Setsuna. “You’re better than the last time we fought.” she commented.

“She’s planning to enter a martial arts tournament.” Kazumi explained.

“And you’re planning to use a harisen?” asked Ayaka.

“It’s the artifact that I got from Anya. Setsuna-san’s been teaching me to use it properly. We’ve had to fight dangerous people.”

Ayaka’s eyes narrowed. “Then maybe I should start practicing armed combat more myself. Then we can be sparring partners again and I can make sure that you don’t slack off like you do in class.”

“I’m much better than I was before.” replied Asuna. “I’ll be the one making sure that you are working hard.”

Ayaka opened her mouth to continue arguing, but then she noticed the clock. “They should be arriving now.” she said and swung the door open.

Phew! Sorry that that took so long!

As she opened the door, she grabbed her past self who quickly turned to face her in shock as she beckoned a wide-eyed past Kotaro into the room.
Chisame raised her eyes to the Heavens and sighed, “I still don’t get why we had to wait in here for so long.”

“We still need to keep the timeline stable. I hope that that is a good enough explanation or do I have to use this?” Ayaka pulled out her pactio card and showed it to Chisame.

"What's going on?-! Is today the day when all sorts of weird things happen to me!-?" asked a panicked Ayaka from the past.

"She's starting to sound like me." Chisame muttered.

The older Ayaka sighed. "We've already lived through this day and used the time machine to come back. I'm here to take over from you so that you can spend the day with Kotaro-kun. The others have other business, but you'll meet up with their past selves later."

"Um…Okay. I-I travelled through time and spoke to myself!-?"

"That's right."

"H-How...First magic and now this! Is this what was being discussed on the telepathy!-? What's going on!-?"

"All will be explained later. Now, we'd all better leave. You don't want to be late for Natsumi-san's play.” Ayaka guided her past self back out the room and sent her off with past Kotaro. “All right. I’d better get back to my duties. I’ll meet you again later.”

“And we’d better get to The World Tree.” said Negi.

“And we’ll help!” offered Konoka. “I’ve already got some charms prepared to help and it will be a good opportunity for Asuna to practice more!”

“Are you sure?” asked Negi.

“Of course!” Konoka grinned.

After Chisame left for her cosplay convention, the rest of the group of time travellers headed towards the World Tree. Once they were almost there, Konoka pulled out a charm and placed it on the floor muttering, “Okuraseru ne wana.” When she looked up again, Mana was in front of them.

“What are you doing, Konoe-san?” she asked.

“Konoka-san has come to help us guard the tree.” Negi responded.

Mana gazed over the group, lingering on Asuna. “Are all of you here to guard the tree?”

“That’s right, Mana. You know that some of us were asked by the school to do so and the rest have offered to help.” explained Setsuna with narrowed eyebrows. “We’ll be making your job easier. Not taking your commission.”

Mana returned her piercing gaze to Asuna and then nodded. “All right. I suggest that you take your posts.” She turned around and headed for the bell tower.

“What was that about?” asked Anya.

“Mana can get very stubborn about money.” sighed Setsuna.

“Well, let’s get back to it. I’ve still got a lot of spells to cast.” Konoka smiled. She walked off for a bit an placed a charm onto a more distant section of the floor and muttered, “Amai kaori no suru han.” The charm quickly sprouted a small plant which rapidly flowered and filled the air with a sweet scent. The group followed her, but only Setsuna, pulling Asuna along, followed Konoka back towards the tree where she once again cast okuraseru ne wana.

"Okuraseru" should mean "delay" so this is the version of "root trap" which only sets off when it's triggered by being stood on/next to.

“Amai kaori no suru han” should mean "Fragrant flower" it creates a flower with a sent which causes others to delay to smell it rather than attend to non-urgent busness. It's still foiled by urgent business though.

As they stood, sniffing the flower, Makie began to approach them. “Ooh, that smells pretty.” she said. “I’m happy to see you here Anya-chan. You too Negi-kun. You’re so cute!”

Anya frowned. “What is it, Makie?”

“Oh, I was just happy to see you again because I’d like to talk more about what we talked about in the haunted house this morning.” Makie giggled. “Is that okay?”

“Um, sure. But we’d better go into a building because this isn’t safe to discuss in public. Negi, you’d better come as well.” Anya beckoned Negi and Makie to follow her to the nearest building as Chamo smirked on Negi’s shoulder.

As Negi closed the door behind them, Anya furrowed her eyebrows and said, “Okay Makie, what is it you want?”

“Well, in the haunted house, you said that it’s still okay for me to start learning magic. But then the effects started up and there wasn’t time to discuss it some more. My performance is today, so I can start learning anytime after tomorrow? May I join in your magic classes? What should I do?”

“Well, I’ve already progressed pretty far with teaching the librarians.” sighed Anya. “More recently, I’ve begun teaching Kazumi a bit, but she’s still on the basics, so I suppose that I can teach you two together. Negi’s also been helping a bit, which is why I brought him here. With students at two levels, a second teacher becomes much more useful. But I haven’t asked him if he’s okay with that commitment.”

“I’d love to be taught by you, Negi-kun!” Makie squealed. “Is that okay?”

“Oh, sure. That should be...”

“Hold on!” Chamo interrupted with a grin.  “All the others that are getting magic lessons have joined our group and promised to help Negi-aniki find his father. Do you want to join us? Are you willing to help us? Why should we teach you if you’re not going to help us when we could spend more time training those who are?”

Makie’s eyes widened. “If Negi-kun needs help, I’d be happy to help him! I’d be really upset if I lost my Daddy! I was so upset when Daddy died!”

The others frowned in confusion. “Wait, what do you mean? You’re saying that your father died, but you’d be upset if you lost him?” asked Anya. “You are making even less sense than normal!”

“No!” replied Makie as she rapidly shook her head. “My dog was named Daddy! He was the one who died! And I’d be upset if my actual Daddy was missing as well!” Anya shrugged at that odd revelation.

“Anyway,” Chamo continued, partially in an attempt to avoid continuing the derail of the subject, “if you want to be a part of our group, there are other things that you need to do. You’d have to make a pactio with Negi-aniki if you really want to help him!”

“Chamo!” squealed Anya.

“Chamo-kun! Do we really have to involve another student in this!?” asked Negi.

“Of course! Even Eva-chan agrees that you need more partners and we know that she’s going to get one anyway,  we’re just maintaining the continuum!”

“Huh?” asked a blank-faced Makie.

“We’re from the future!” explained Chamo. “Our past selves found out that you made a pactio and became Negi-aniki’s partner. Which is good as the only student in our group who doesn’t have a pactio is Ku Fei-chan as she claims that she’s strong enough without one and has promised to make one if any of the mages become better in combat than her. I doubt that you’re as combat capable as she is!”

“Making a pactio is a big responsibility! We can’t rush her into this!” cried Negi.

“Exactly!” agreed Anya. “You can’t keep asking every girl you meet to kiss Negi!”

“Kiss Negi-kun?” asked Makie. “A big responsibility?”

“All you have to do is kiss Negi-aniki in a magic circle that I’ll draw and then you’ll get a card that’ll give you magic powers to help protect him!” Chamo explained.

“I don’t mind that!” said Makie. “I’d like to kiss Negi-kun and get magic powers!” Anya’s face reddened and her fists clenched as smoke began pouring out her ears.

“See? She’s fine with it!” said Chamo as he quickly drew a pactio circle. “And you have to do it to protect the timeline!”

“All right, Chamo-kun.” Negi sighed in defeat. He walked into the circle and was quickly joined by Makie who planted a kiss on his lips.

“Pactio!” cried Chamo. The purple light dimmed and a card fell to the floor. Chamo quickly duplicated it and passed one to Makie. “This is for you.”

“It’s so cute!” squealed Makie as she lifted the card to her face. Then her smile dropped. “I’d better go! I need to be ready for my performance early!” She opened the door and rushed out.

“I guess that we’d better get back to our posts.” Anya growled through clenched teeth.

... that's pretty much how I feel, too. It's a bit frightening how plausible that is, honestly ...

Oboy. Whee.

... At least you'd be upset. I wouldn't be able to feel anything, but then, we haven't met in twenty years.
What is the point anymore?
