TB Signs Ryan Howard
AAS: $15M (with possible $20M through incentives) Years: 3 years ’13 – $15M ’14 – $15M ’15 – $15M
Rationale: The Tampa Bay Rays organization is seeking a starting first baseman this off-season and would like to extend a contract offer to Ryan Howard. Our team is primed to contend in the AL East during the 2013 season and is in need of an experienced offensive weapon to anchor our lineup. Mr. Howard would be an excellent fit with our ballclub.
We are prepared to offer Mr. Howard a guaranteed $15 million contract for the 2013, 2014, and 2015 seasons. The Tampa Bay Rays organization is fiscally responsible yet consistently puts a winning ballclub on the field. But when we see talent such as Mr. Howard, a first baseman with a proven track record, we will give meaningful incentive-based contracts. We hope that you take our offer into consideration. We are in need of a starting first baseman and we view Mr. Howard as the answer to solidify our lineup.
Additionally, please see the below incentives for reaching specific offensive milestones (each year under contract) that will see a salary increase:
$1M increase for 30 homeruns $1M increase for 100 rbis $1M increase for over .850 OPS $1M increase for making the MLB All-Star team $1M increase if the Tampa Bay Rays make the ATH Playoffs

1. TB- The offer is offering the most money without an option year. It has pretty good incentives and Rick does have the need for a 1B pretty bad. It is very performance based and his explanation is once again good.
2. TEX- I like the middle point of TEX's more but the fact he offered 30M and then it drops off a cliff is kind of alarming and the option year goes up without any real consistency. It's not a bad explanation.
3. NYM- Not a bad offer, but the offer is on the lower side plus the incentives are harder to reach than the other offers.
TB - By far most realistic offer would be a nice contract for a player like Howard. Incentives a bit hard to reach but still top offer. Good explanation as well
TEX - Good first year offer just dumb to drop down to 13M in the second year to kill that AAS and then the option year jumps more then the second year. Still better offer then NYM
NYM - good offer still just a tad low IMO for a player of Howard's caliber who can still produce
1. Tampa - Realistic and very nice for Howard who still can produce great numbers. This gives a power bat to the TB lineup at a nice cost. The incentives are a little high but the AAS does it for me.
2. NYM - Good offer but I don't see this beating out TB's offer. It's a close second and maybe if the AAS was closer to TB's, that 4th option year would matter....
3. TEX - Strong offer... if it were a 1 year deal only.
My final votes are in #1. Tampa- The 3 years guarenteed made this deal better to me. Offering incentives throughout the contract was also a selling factor. #2 Rangers- The money offered was overwhelmingly the best. However, no incentives in 1ST year was a hinderance to me. With deep pockets, they showed that they really want the player. #3. Mets-Good offer, but not in same class as other 2. The Mets are spending like a mid market team.
