The object of Poker is to have the highest hand out of the following heirarchy:
Alternatively, if all players decide to fold out of the hand, the remaining player is considered the winner. Texas Hold'em is played by the following sequence.
EG Player A has a King of Spades and a 4 of Diamonds. Player B has a Jack of Diamonds and the 6 of Clubs. The five community cards are 6 of Spades, 6 of Diamonds, Jack of Spades, 2 of Spades and Ace of Spades. Player A has a flush because there are 4 spades in the community cards, and one in his hand. Player B has a Full house because there are 2 6s in the community cards and one in his hand as well as a Jack in his hand and in the community cards. Player A's flush beat player B's full house. Betting Betting rounds follow this proceedure: The first round of betting is set by the blinds. The small blind is payed by the person to the dealer's left, being 1/2 the minimum bet. The next person must pay the big blind, which is the full minimum bet. Anyone who didnt play the previous hand (assuming there was one) must pay the minimum bet, multiplied by the number of hands that occured since they last played (To a maximum of 4. They only count one hand if they have just joined a game). This is the Ante. Once all Blinds and Antes are in, the cards are dealt and the first round of betting takes place. The person to the left of the last person to put any money is the first to act, and has three choices. They can call, which means to meet the bet payed by the last player and stay in the game, they can raise (explained later), or they can fold, which means they give up and leave the game without having to pay any more money. Once all bets are equal from any players who remain in the hand the round ends. Round 2 starts with the person to the left of the last person to act in the first round. They get the following choices. They can Check, which means they want to pass on the decision to bet, pay no money but remain in the game, or they can bet the minimum. If they check, the next person gets the same option. However if they bet then the next person must choose to Call (meet the bet), fold or Raise. Raising adds the minimum bet onto the previous amount, the maximum bet being 4 times the minimum. As such the bet cannot be raised more than 3 times consecutively. Again, once all bets are equal the round ends. Rounds 3 and 4 proceed in the same way as Round 2, except the minimum bet is doubled. |

APPENDIX - SAMPLE GAME To make things easier, here is a quick sample game to show how things work. 4 players, Player A, Player B, Player C and Player D. Player C is dealing. Player D spent the last hand on the toilet and missed it, but has returned in time for this one. Blinds are posted. Player B is left of C, so Pays the small blind of 1 match. Player A pays the Big blind of 2 matches and Player D pays his Ante of 2 matches. The cards are dealt to each player. Player A has a King of Spades and a 4 of Diamonds. Player B has a Jack of Diamonds and the 6 of Clubs. Player C has the 2 of diamonds and 4 of clubs. Player D has the 4 of Hearts and the Jack of hearts. Player C is first to act, being left of player D who was last to put money in. He decides to fold, seeing his cards as unlikely to make a winning hand. Player B acts next and puts in the one more match to meet player D's ante. All bets are level at 2 matches from each player and the flop is dealt The flop goes 6 of Spades, 6 of Diamonds, Jack of Spades. Player B now has a full house, Player A has a pair of 6s and Player D has a pair of jacks and a pair of sixes. B is in the lead. Round 2 of betting starts with Player A, left of B who was last to act. Player A knocks on the table to signal that he wishes to check. The decision to bet moves to Player D, who puts in the minimum bet of two. Player B decides to 'slow play' the full house, to convince the others he has no good hand and trick them into raising the stakes. He calls D's bet and puts 2 in himself. Betting is back with A, who puts in 2 matches. Bets are equal and the round ends The turn is dealt. It is the 2 of spades. Round 3 of betting opens with Player D, who puts in the new minimum bet of 4 matches. Player B raises to 8 matches. Player A decides to bluff. He raises the stakes as well, making 12 and trying to make the others think he has the flush (which would be a possibility as there are 3 spades on the table.). Player D falls for the bluff and folds. Player B is confident in his full house, and calls Player A's 12 matches and the round ends. The river is dealt. The Ace of Spades. Player A now actually has the flush, which beats Player B's Full house. Round 4 starts with Player A, who straight away bets the minimum 4. Player B raises to 8, and player A raises again to 12. Player B, confident that A is bluffing, raises once more to 16. Player A can only call now, as the maximum bet has been reached. As player B was last to raise, he shows his hand first. He revealls his full house to player A, who turns over his king of spades only, showing that he has the flush. Player A takes the pot and grins inanely at winning. |
