I'm liking the larger scale version of the vehicle much better, Hamilton. Probably because we can see bigger and better details!!!

Time to build a hood. First, a firewall was cut out of .030" styrene. The bottom opening clears
the bell housing and transmission, the curved support strip at the top mirrors the shape of the
grill and the retangular opening will accomodate the instrument cluster....

Posted Image

The grill shell was detailed with strip styrene and photoetched grill bars....

Posted Image

Next, I carved a buck that I was going use to to shape a piece of aluminum for the hood.....

Posted Image

...but that didn't work.
When the aluminum sheet was formed over the buck, it would spring back like this:

Posted Image

I could have hammered the aluminum over the buck, but then I would've had to file the
dents and smooth out the surface.....WAY too much work.
Instead, I just rolled the corners with a knife handle....

Posted Image

...and used the buck to check the fit.

After a couple of hours of filing and test fitting I added a couple of strips to the finished
hood for some visual interest. Getting a really good fit required filing and hand-tweaking
between every test-fit, which took some time)

Now this space...............

Posted Image

.....will be filled with a hood of scale thickness. This is just mocked in place - the little
spaces will be gone whme everything is permanently attached.

Posted Image

The rest of the gears and chain came in, too, so now I can play with the drive train:

That's cool. I made a dragster body out of aluminum and the frame from brass. I found 1/4" drive sockets really useful to bend different shapes.

Here's a quick update on the working steering (it works from the drag link
on down to the tie rod. The steering box doesn't do anything....)

All the pins are temporary....

Hi Ken,
I realy like the engineering that yo are putting into this project. The scratch building shows that you understand the mechanics behind the machine.
Another outstanding piece of work

Thanks, guys.

Here's the latest from the weekend building sessions:
First, the clutch linkage, attached to the steering brackets. The forked support
bracket on the end of the shaft attaches to the engine block..........

Posted Image

The throw-out arm is just a piece of brass channel stuck in the bell housing....

Posted Image

When everything gets put together permanently, the connecter rod to the clutch
throw-out will be added to finish it off..........

Posted Image

Next, I did the frame for the folding top over the seat, using .010"x .042" flat brass...

Posted Image

Long story short: After trying several things for the fabric top, I used a piece of heavy foil
from the top of a wine bottle. It's a little thinner than Verlinden lead foil and shapes nicely...

Posted Image

After everything is painted, I can form the bottom of the back flap and attach it to the back of seat.
I might laminate some tissue paper to the foil for a little bit of texture.....

Posted Image

That's it for now. This week might not see too much building time, but I like to get in some
long, late-night building sessions on the weekends...which I was able to do this past weekend!

Gorgeous Ken! What will be very rewarding with this model is that all of the little details that you have spent so much time perfecting WILL be seen on the model unlike a typical model car kit.
Fantastic!
