Cranky's suddenly getting cranked up about making a new backdrop for his finished vehicles . . . this time I am thinking of making something futuristic. I don't know where this is going to head yet, but I want to start gathering all the parts . . . and also make a run to the LHS to pick up some styrene . . . I have a general idea of how I want it to look, and I am thinking of magnetizing some of the components so that they can be interchangeable . . . so the backdrop could always be changing. I think it will not only be a great photo backdrop for customs and hot rods, but for rat rods and WW3 vehicles . . . I know you guys will jump in and help guide this one . . . I'm excited . . .

Nah, buddy, it's going to be like one of those warehouse type deals like in Aliens . . . lots of tanks, tubes, cables, gutters . . . they are going to be build in three separate 6-8" pieces this way I can change their order in the background . . . lots of diamond plating, grates, airvents . . . just lots of stuff for the background . . . Maybe a little steampunk accents thrown in for good measure. I've always thought this would make a great backdrop for photographing rat rods and WW3 vehicles . . . we'll see . . . I can already see a few busted pipes with some blue antifreeze type liquid oozing out!

Well, I gotta start going through my parts bins to fish out stuff I can use. But I'm going to make the walls out of plasticard, probably .60 thick so that they will be fairly sturdy . . . I want to make one of the sections with one of those hallway doors you seen in the sci-fi movies . . . I guess this gives me a good excuse to watch Aliens and 5th Element again. Maybe even Dunes. One of the sections is going to look like some sort of generator room . . . |

Like I said, the dimensions for the rear wall will be in 6-8" panels, three panels will probably give me ample wide angle visibility. Perhaps the panels will be 12" tall so I can hang lights, I-beams, etc . . . but also so that I can shoot birdseye too. The actual display will be 24" x 14"--I don't want to build it too big because I want it to fit on my table top studio . . . |

If anyone has some reference pictures of those types of Science Fiction scenarios . . . like factory/warehouse/landing platform, etc . . . please share them here . . . I'll look for goodies myself too. |

You betcha, Dan, I think both mill and lathe will come in handy for some of the parts, though I'm already filling up a whole box with all sorts of interesting kit parts . . . etc . . . I am very excited about this one. I'm building it in 4-6" long modules so that they can be interchanged as a background . . . I'm working out some of the technical details right now . . . I know it's probably sounding a lot more difficult than it might turn out to be, we'll see. |

Could you just use the picture? Maybe do one of those cut-out things to give it a 3D effect? |

Great reference HJ. It appears that Virg needs to focus more on a backdrop as shown in the first picture of gallery 1.0 at teh bottom of the opening page. That appears to be an award winning backdrop. |

Thanks for the input, maties . . . I really appreciate it . . . Jim, that IS very inspirational, thanks. I have the five modular units (or staging areas, as I would like to call them) ready . . . and I will explain the method to the madness . . . stay tuned in. |

Here's a pic of the unit that will have a bay door and lots of details . . . as futuristic as I can must . . . I already have a ton of parts. Although I envision this to be the center panel or staging area, all five modular units can be organized in any order to always create a different (but contiguous) background. I hope that makes sense. This section is 11" x 6" x 4": ![]() All of the units are the same height: 11" because I want to have plenty of headroom for eye level shots without runnint out of detail . . . The other four sections are 11" x 4" x 4" and lined up they will look like this: ![]() All the stages are finished and together they make one continuous unit that's 24" long . . . there's also going to be a base in front of this corridor that will be detailed and this will be the staging area for the actual subjects to be photographed. Here's a picture of the construction to give all the modules a bit of squaring and rock solid stability: ![]() All of this will be primered and painted black so that it is really not seen once the stages are in place on top of the base . . . Virgil, for pipes, don't forget those straws with the accordion bend in them. Maybe go with a steam punk theme with a lot of copper and brass (??) Looking forward to what your demented mind comes up with. |

You betcha, Chester, I have a whole box of those straws . . . they are great, but the way I'm thinking is each panel has to have some of the same elements to provide continuity no matter what order they are places, which is why I am going to use lots of piping and tubing and YES, definitely plenty of steampunk elements. |

The beauty of this set up too is that not all of the modules need to be used as a backdrop, which is why I made five because, there will be a multitude of possibilities by changing their order and by using as few as two or three . . . As tempted as I am to add all sorts of bells and whistles and lights to this one, I am also working with the idea that LESS WILL BE MORE!!! (Oh yeah, sure, you all know how well I do with that kind of control!)
