Finishing the Lumber Carrier brought on a brief rest period, but this other project has
been nagging at me from the sidelines:

Posted Image

What pushed me over the edge to get started was a photo of another Stacker taken by
one of the guys on another Forum. This one is mounted on an old truck chassis and the
photo made me head right back to the bench.

Posted Image

I like the steel wheels in the first photo and the best thing I could come up with for the rim
was the center spool of a roll of Scotch Tape:

Posted Image

Long story short:

Posted Image

The chassis will be built around the front clip of the Beverly Hillbillies truck, using the motor,
front axle and the front of the frame. The rest will be built using Evergreen channel stock.

Posted Image

BTW, see the lumber stacks in the first photo?
I just ordered 10,000 wooden coffee stirrers on-line.
They're pretty cheap when you order that many.......

All right, Daddy-O, you are back in business. The pictures are to die for, the how-to pics. This is going to be another great build to watch Master Ken at work. You are going to make our November a special month, after all!!!

Very nice indeed. Maybe Lou will have a suggestion about how to make 2 x 4 lumber out of those stirrers. This is like a lumber stacking eiffel tower.

Great wheels BTW.

Oh boy! We're all in for another lesson from the diorama doctor. Amazing how you can make a wheel from a scotch tape dispenser look so good. There has to be a figure or two that go along with this one. I can just see some guy hanging from his suspenders on that thing.

Great project Ken.!!!

Those stackers look very unstable. Obviously OSHA would have none of that today.

I'm thinking they will be even more unstable when built in scale. Are you going to fill the engine block with lead? Or just glue it down to a base?

Thanks, guys. Hopefully this won't take as long as the last one.
Jim, it looks top-heavy, but there's really not a lot of weight in the
tower - the real one or the model, which proportionately will be much
lighter than the "real" one. I'll probably need to keep it un-glued so it
can be packed and safely transported, but tipping shouldn't be an issue.
(....If it IS wobbly, I could always pin it to the base through the tires)

Here's the first mock-up. The solid platform was built before I decided
to mount the tower on a truck chassis. I may not use the deck and mount
the legs to the open frame to show all the runing gear detail:

Posted Image

This gives a rough idea of how tall it will be:

Posted Image

It will actually be a little shorter. Right now the tower legs are sitting on the deck.
They'll eventually spread open more, sit down over the sides and bolt to the chassis.

The kit trans had an open flywheel and ring gear. I spruced it up a little by hollowing out
the bell housing and adding a watch-gear flywheel and old cannister air cleaner clutch
housing (the blue piece):

Posted Image

You won't really be able to see it, but if somebody turns the stacker over it'll be a nice little detail.

This is going to be a great lesson.

Hi Ken
I glad to see that you took up the challenge to build a lumber stacker. It appears that you are going for a blend of the two stackers in your chassis. Are you going with the fork lift style lift in the second pic or the conveyor belt style of the first picture? Either way I have no doubt that it will be magnificent.
Your off to a fine start already

Thanks

Carl

.......Ever seen 10,000 coffee stirrers?

Posted Image

If you look at the first photo in the thread, you'll see lots of lumber stacks.
The model won't be as effective without them. 5-1/2"Coffee Stirrers looked good,
and they were REAL cheap....10,000 for 12-bucks. Now I need to order a 55-gallon drum of glue.

Jim: The rivets are from "Tichy". Just cut off the heads & glue them in place. I used .035" for the Stacker;

Posted Image

Carl: I'm going to use the "belt" system;

Jim: My first post was from work at 7:48 Eastern time and the pics were from the night before.
The later post showed the results of that night's work session. (PS: I DID take a nap)

Thanks for all the comments. I'll be anxious to see how this turns out, too.......

I like the guy (figure) with his hands on his hips. "There's your problem" he says as he looks at the pile of lumber...

Now that's the way to do rivets.!!!

Hey Ken, Wait, wait, wait.!!!!!! Don't open any more coffee stirrer boxes.!!!!

Tell those two guys that if they simply leave the lumber in the boxes, they won't have to stack it.
They can open the side of the boxes and then just lift out the lumber as they need it.

And they won't need the lumber stacker........
