Gifts from my Grandfathers; Things I didn't know still existed...

While visiting my parents this weekend, they gave me two giant bins of model planes my grandfathers made. One of them died a decade ago, and the other almost two decades ago, so it's pretty cool to find some cool old models I thought were destroyed years ago. Most of them are sadly broken, many beyond repair. These are the ones that are still repairable. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with them...

What a fantastic keepsake. It would be a great tribute to restore as many as you can.

That's just awesome to have something your grandfather did many yrs ago. To restore as many as possible would be a great tribute to them.

Chuck this is great find. Restore what you can, and cherish the rest.

BTW I probably blew many of those up when I was younger, with firecrackers.

Thanks, guys. I'm thinking a few of them would be great as diorama subjects. Maybe a shot down plane or a boneyard scene. I'm going to patch up as many as I can though. It was so cool to see some of my favorite planes as a kid still exist.

(I will confess when I was much younger a lot of them did get blown up or set on fire. The cats destroyed the rest.)

That's what I was thinking. You could make a mobile out of some of them.

Chuck, don't do anything to the planes except perhaps a light cleaning. NK is the man to talk about how to do it.

Remember they are a view to the past, a very personal past and restoring them to a state that your grandfather never created is diminishing their value. If there are basket cases I would say go ahead and do what you want with them but anything that appears to be near complete just gently clean them and preserve the work that your grandfather did.

One great saying is, "You can restore it many times, but it is original only once."
