Nasty, Virgil...I like how you can free-hand the two tone like that...I shake too much to even attempt it (no matter how good the airbrush)... ;)

Thanks, maties, yeah, this one has been fun so far . . .

Howard, my hand shakes too buddy so I use the end of the bench to rest the heel of my hand against. That steadies it up a bit. You can also use a Mahl stick across you knees, then rest your hand against it.

Besides, this kind of paintjob is stress free . . . and for the extra insurance you can just always mask. ;)

Folks, I am uploading a new set of pictures I hope you find pleasing to the eye . . . and the rationale for this type of thing is you have to imagine a teenager in this economy who might have received a old beach comber vehicle from grandpa, an old surfer, and the kid went out and bought a whole bunch of stencils and went crazy with them and a rattle can . . . that's all he could afford. Would you blame him?

Stay tuned in for what I hope puts a big smile on your face tonight . . .

Here are some preliminary shots . . . just like it could happen in real life with a good set of stencils and some rattle cans . . .

Other than the top, this is my favorite side . . . it just looks random and haphazzard enough to be believable. :D

Tiki voodoo, nothing like it!!! Of course this will be partly covered by the surf rack, but we'll know it is there . . .

Hum, Tiki with mustache or teeth . . .

That rust looks so convincing, great job.
Do you wet down the model then put the salt on or is the salt wet when you put it on?

Thanks, Jim . . . I really appreciate the kind words . . .

Leadfoot, you wet the surface of the vehicle and while it is still wet you sprinkle both regular and kosher salt on it. You let the water evaporate overnight, or use a hairdryer like I do for speed . . .

Then you airbrush the paint on . . . it also works with rattle cans. Bryan, I think, has done it that way. But, obviously, the model cannot be wet when you apply the paint.

Well, not true, if you are using acrylics you can let them bleed into each other, which is great if you are putting on the rust coats.

"you have to imagine a teenager in this economy who might have received a old beach comber vehicle from grandpa, an old surfer, and the kid went out"

If my son or my grandson ever did that to my mint '56 Nomad they would be left out of my will and I would never speak to either of them again. I would curse their sperm and hoped that they would go blind or drown in the sea. The ungrateful pieces of sh.. And I'm talking only about the scale plastic kit.

Great job Virg. Keep it going.

Let me see what I can cook up, Dave. I'm starting with the chassis next, and then the suspension, then the interior . . . I still have a while to go before I even start on the engine.

We'll see what will happen . . . thanks for all the comments and feedback, folks!!!

That paint idea is so f***ing sweet for the surf wagon motif. Surfers don't care what it looks like as long as it hauls their boards to the beach!

Well, the surfer who drives this vehicle just cares about the surf being up!!! :D :D

Well, I got a lot preliminary work done on the chassis, but no pics until tomorrow . . .
