The K&J Speed Shop 2007 Fall Kruize is an unprecedented event that was in the planning stages for several months. What began as a way for a few BnD forum members to get together and take pictures of their respective hot rods on the Speed Shop diorama quickly grew into a major car show that attracted builders from literally all over the world. As a "first-ever" event, the expected turnout was largely unknown, but as more and more cars began to arrive it became evident that this would be one of the most enjoyable model car events ever presented. We hope you'll agree as you scroll through these photos of the K&J Speed Shop 2007 Fall Kruize __________________________________________________________ As the sun comes up on Kruize Day, this tranquil scene will soon be full of cars, participants and spectators.....

Mercman has been waiting for this for a long time, so it's no surprise that his Karavan was the first to arrive: ![]() Well...not EXACTLY the first. Virgil's been here since before dawn drumming up enthusiasm for the Kruize: ![]() ...and the Registration Tent hasn't even been set up yet!!!! |

Under Virgil's watchful eye, the first cars have officially entering the Fairgrounds.... ![]() ...only to find that the registration tent isn't open yet. ![]() That was only a brief wait and Merc got settled in just as more cars and a few spectators began to arrive.

....and arrive they DID! Lines formed in what seemed like minutes and traffic control became a big issue. All those hot rods filtering thorugh one registration table caused quite a backup...... ![]() We took advantage of the holdup at the gate by hitching a ride in the Hot Air Balloon that's part of the activities (...more on that later). You can really appreciate the heavy, early turnout from the air...... ![]() WHOA!!!!! It can get pretty WINDY up here. Hang on to that BASKET!!!.... ![]() Here's a zoom-in of just one small corner of the Fairgrounds, and it's still early!! ![]() Another shot of the gate from the Balloon. Howard just made it through. Dave-in-the-Hat's truck looks like it could roll through anybody in its way. Before landing, we took one last look from above the roadway. That line is still pretty long. Once everybody gets in, though, we can walk around the field and take some detail shots of the beautiful iron that has shown up for the Kruize and cover the Special Events once they begin.

After the initial shock wore off, we realized that this in fact was JIM'S STOLEN CAR! It slowly pulled into the fairgrounds to the delight of all those who had been following this terrible story.... ![]() ![]() All eyes were soon on this Flaming Blue (jail) Bird... Then the story took an even more bizarre twist. As the trailer manuvered in front of the Speed Shop garage doors, micrphones were set up, local dignitaries began to arrive and the crowd began filtering towards the shop. What gives? ![]() Before long, the Major of Mizpah was taking credit for cracking a major car theft ring and almost single-handedly retrieving the car stolen by a band of Franklinville hoodlums from an honored, out-of-state guest from Utah . ![]() After a well-placed phone call from some the Mayor's "associates" (who owed me a personal favor and who wanted the car to be found "very quickly") Jim become the Mayor's new best friend and poster boy for local law enforcement. ![]() All our "Honored Guest" could do was scratch his head, listen to the endless speeches and wonder how his personal nightmare could have ever ended with him becoming a local hero. ![]() Now maybe he can do what he wanted to do in the FIRST place: Cruise the fairgounds and look at Kool Cars!!! (which is what we're going to do next) |

While the Mayor was giving his speech, cars continued to pull into the Fairgrounds. By the time the dust had settled (stirred up by all that hot air) quite a crowd was on hand enjoying the Kruize: ![]() Between this running narrative and the Mayor's speech, there's been too much talk and not enough cars. It's time to sit back, turn up the oldies and scroll through some of the Hottest Cars every built in HO scale..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If your transistor radio's not getting good reception out here, you can always listen to the Mays Landing Jamboree Jug Band, booked for the event by our pal Mike Napoleon. (Opps...I said I wouldn't interrupt...) ![]()

Well, there's just one more flash cube on the Instamatic, so we'll make one last pass around the Kruize standing on a ladder on the cab of Dave Sullivan's wrecker. A perilous perch, but you gotta do what you gotta do when your Kovering Kool Kruizers..... ![]() Next time we'll zero in on these hot rods and get the scoop on some of the participants. Don't go 'way. But if you do, don't go too far. |

Four of the five give-away cars managed to get in this picture: Mercman's two racers, David King's "T" and Chris's Chevy stakebody that came all the way from Germany for the Kruize. ![]() At the far left is Ben Stone's amazing Kruizin' Kaddy Giveway Kar. At the end of the event 5 lucky Kruizers will be going home with new iron. Below, Right to Left: Dave Sullivan's Nomad, Clare Gilbert's '35-vintage prominent Pontiac, Junior (Mercman) Berg's flaming Ford, Mike Boyle's purple pickup and Ron Royston's Corvette. ![]() Below, Front to back, beginning with Steve Curbishly's out-of-focus "Kibelwagon" or whateverthe heck they're called, Merc's Merc, Chester's chopped Chevy, Clare Gilbert's wicked Willys and Steve Curbishly's Merc. We can also see Chester's white '37 and Clare's sedan delivery in the background. ![]() Here's a better shot of the pair of '37's: Chester's white business coupe and Clare's cool work truck. Beside them is Richard Olson's '20 "T" pickup.

The Kruize Burnout Kontest was held on the concrete pad in front of the Speed Shop garage doors. Several High-Horsepower guys lined up for the event as soon as it was announced. Dave Roehrle barged to the front of the line to show off his blown Dodge. ![]() The K&J Balloon hovered above the crowd and provided the perfect vantage point for the Kontest. Dave started out with a so-so burn..... ![]() ....which very quickly turned into a real crowd-pleaser: ![]() After Dave finished showing off, I pulled up the line in my '55 Gasser. Not to be outdone, I fired it up and began burning the balonies, but it's hard to beat a blower. ![]() Next up was Clare Gilbert in his Bee-YOU-tee-ful Blue Willys. A quick hit of the throttle and......Instant Tire Smoke. ![]() Open headers, a blue Willys and plenty of tire smoke. I doesn't get much better than that. In an effort to conserve rubber before returning to Canada, Clare's burnout exhibited tasteful restraint. ![]() Hollywood Jim added to the Kontest by tanning the hides of his recently recovered rat. Not bad for an old rust bucket that hauled a trailer all the way from Utah. ![]() David King wanted to get into the act with his "Give-away T". It was a good try, but this wasn't exactly the kind of "burnout" the crowd had in mind..... ![]() After the dust had settled, it was obvious that Dave's Big, Bad, Blown Dodge was the hands-down winner. He celebrated the win with a spectacular exhibition of fiery Firestones that left the crowd with burning eyes and happy smiles. ![]() Congratulations, Dave!! |

After the Burnout Kontest the low-battery light on the camera started to flash, but as we made our way back to the car through the "Big Truck" section of the Fairgrounds there was enough juice to get a quick shot of four flat beds: (l. to r.) Richard Olson's beautifully restored '29 Dodge Bros. truck and his '31 Model AA, and Dan Stobert's stakebody and green Mack. The workmanship on all these trucks is top-notch. ![]() Here's another look from the K&J Balloon..... ![]() The quality of the woodwork on these trucks is outstanding. Bodywork, too....... ![]() On our way back through with new batteries, we came across Dave Roehrle's Monster Kenworth and Dan Stobert's wrecker..... ![]() Before we could take any more pictures, Dan whipped in front of us in his water-tank-hauling 4WD and stopped to accommodate another photographer..... ![]() This Glamour (?) Shot of Dave's monster reveals its true beauty and the amount of work involved in its transformation. We're not sure, but we believe the child is crying..... ![]() We didn't have to ask Dan twice to turn his wrecker around so we could see the great scratchbuilding job he did on the rear end...

Well, it's been a long day so far and the K&J Photographers are starting to get hungry from the smell of Funnel cakes and scrapple, but before lunch we took a walk out to the street to see what was going on near the gate. ![]() Mays Landing hasn't seen a traffic jam like this in a long time.... ![]() We took a shortcut through the junk yard to avoid the crowd. Looks like the lunch wagons are just about set up. Can't wait.......

The Scrapple wasn't done yet (...how long does it take to cook SCRAPPLE, for Pete's sake?) so we took another walk around the Fairgrounds. The first thing that caught our eye was Melvin Jones' walk-in (second from right), that had arrived pulling a trailered Cobra. To the left is Dan Stobert's pickup, parking beside Hollywood Jim's cross-country Rat. ![]() ![]() On the other side of the van is a Mercman Lead Sled, Steve Curbishley's wagon, HJ's infamous retreived coupe (under the watchful eye of the local police, who are just waiting for Jim to break the law again) and Chester's chopped pickup. Here's another view of those same cars, but in this shot we can see Mike Boyle's Hoodless Horseman Ford sedan.... There's one at every show. A knucklehead who builds something outlandish just to get attention. This time it's a Toilet Go-Kart, temporarily parking beside Dan Stobert's sedan delivery ![]() Mike Boyle's pickup and Richard Olson's roadster can just be seen in the background You may have noticed that Virgil isn't holding up his sign in any of the previous pictures. That's because (if you look closely at the center of the next picture) he has strategically plopped himself on a lawn chair in the back of his pickup to catch a glimpse of every car coming through the gate. Are you getting enough Eye Candy, Virg?? ![]() This shot will give you an idea of the level of activity as the Kruize gets into full swing. Ron Royston's flamed Merc sits butt-to-butt with Steve Curbushley's nostalgia roadster. To the delight of the crowd, the K&J Speed Shop Nostalgia front-engine dragster is being rolled through the gate in the background. Now THAT should have been in the Burnout Contest....

Just as bigger car shows have Invited Guests like George Barris, Gene Winfield and other famous customizers, the Kruize staff invited famous diorama guy Karl Osolinski to take part in the festivities. Karl won't need any introduction to guys from the Railroad Line Forums, but you others may want to check out some of Karl-O's breathtaking work. He arrived in style in his recently completed, chopped '32 and couldn't help torching the balonies as he approached the fairgrounds... ![]() Even as he pulled in past the Chief of the Mays Landing Police Department, he HAD to chirp the tires one last time before hitting the gravel.... ![]() We'll get a closer look at Karl and his Koupe in a little bit. |

This has been quite a Kruize so far and there's still a ton of stuff to see and do...but first, it's time for LUNCH! The two food vendors who showed up look like they're finally open. Let's go check it out..... Looks like there's quite a line at "Bink's Scrapple Van"..... ![]() "Chef Bink", with an old hat stolen from Mike Napoleon, proves that you can indeed polish a pig. His Scrapple Empire includes the traditional "Scrapple on a Plate", "Frozen Scrapple Slabs", "Scrapple on a Stick" and "Scrapple Pizza" along with his new line of "Scrapple Butter" and the morning favorite "Scrapple Juice"... ![]() Right beside the Scrapple Wagon is the trailer owned and operated by the "Soonerolds Funnel Cake Factory"... Two old folks known only as "Mom" and "Pop" are busy dishing up the deep fried delights. ![]() Judging from their stockpile of flour "Mom" and "Pop" are expecting quite a crowd, although the Mays Landing Health Department would have something to say about those bags of flour laying on the ground... ![]() Health Department issues aside, The Funnel Cake trailer continues to attract a crowd, including Karl Osolinski who, after catching a whiff of the fabulous fried dough, left his orange coupe at the Registration Tent and ran into the Funnel Cake line... ![]() ....and then into the Scrapple Van line..... ![]() ....and THEN into the Port-a-John line... ![]() ...which seems to be getting steady action since Chef Bink opened for business.

With that bit of business out of the way, Karl - and the rest of us - can continue into the field to look at some more cars... ![]() Starting with Melvin Jones' Cobra and the famous "Fesmire Flyer", restored and brought to the Kruize by Chester Fesmire. ![]() We get back to the field just as the K&J Remote Parking Lot Bus arrives and discharges passengers eager to take part in the Kruize. ![]() On the way into the main field, speactators are drawn to the Model Kontest, Richard Olson's ice cream truck.....and Virgil with his sign.

A big, unscheduled Kruize event happened when a bunch of guys decided to head north to the Craftsman Structure Show in Mansfied, MA. ![]() Some of the Kruizers included Mike Boyle leading the pack, followed by Junior Berg, Karl-O in his orange coupe, Howard Hazleton's open-air Nomad, Ben Stone in his Kaddy Jruizer, Richard Olson, Steve Curbishly, Clare Gilbert in his Willys and Dave Sullivan. Of course, one of the first things we did was get lost and we somehow ended up on Bleeker Street on the wrong side of some town unknown to any of us... After several trips around the block we STILL couldn't get our bearings... ![]() We finally stopped to ask directions. Karl-O was the only one brave enough to get out of the car to ask "Lola", who turned out to have a remarkably deep voice, how to get out of the neighborhood.... ![]() After getting back on track, we took another little side trip to visit our friend Kevin O'Neill at Duffy's Coal Company... ![]() Getting back in Kruize Mode, we ended up driving through the quaint little borough of "Damnation Corners." It was better looking than the name would imply.... ![]() ...but the trip through wasn't without problems. Their railroad crossings presented a sticky problem for some of the tail-draggers in the group and we had to turn around. The locals didn't seem too concerned about our plight... ![]() After picking a more Kustom-Friendly route, we were once again on our way...

One of the guys DID get separated from the rest of the group, but we hooked up around the corner. The Karavan remained intact for the rest of the trip. ![]() While we were Kruizing through town Richard Olson and Hollywood Jim stopped at a boot shop and ordered some kustom footwear... ![]() ...while the rest of us proceeded up the road for a tour of the Kingston Creamery. ![]() After leaving the boot shop, Richard and HJ hooked up with Steve Curbishley and stopped at Thorndike Mills in the little town of South River. ![]() Later in the day we all hooked up again in Kendall for a quick lunch...... ![]() ....then hit the road again to continue the trip. ![]() Naturally, we didn't get too far before getting hungry again so we stopped at Val's Diner, owned by Rich Beaubien of the RR Forum. ![]() Parking was at a premium, but we all managed to find a spot, even if it meant driving around the block a few times. ![]() Karl-O ate faster than anyone else and, being a sucker for a good love story, decided to take in a movie while he waited for the rest of us to finish our burgers. ![]() After dinner it was back on the road. As we were losing daylight, we were delayed by a tractor/trailer backing into one of the many industrial facilities we passed along the way home.

After driving non-stop through the night, we arrived back at the fairgrounds none the worse for wear. A little nap and a few quarts of 10W-40 and we'll be ready to walk around the grounds to look at some more cars. ![]() As the road-tripping Kruizers pulled back onto the field, they passed latecomer Shannon Dimaulo at the registration tent. Shannon came all the way from North Vancouver in her '40, which is a replica of a 1/25th scale model. Shannon builds some cool stuff. Note two of the "Best Paint" contenders on the left: Mike Boyle's truck and Clare Gilbert's Willys. ![]() While we were away, Lou Scrima unloaded his one-horsepower Kruizer and offered carriage rides around the Fairgrounds. After a few laps, though, Old Stewball called it quits...in spite of Lou's efforts to push-start the nag. Hearing the commotion, Chef Bink (standing in front of Dan Stobert's bright yellow sedan delivery) wandered over to investigate a possible new source of fresh scrapple. ![]() There's no limit to the new recipes Chef Bink could come up with. ![]() The carriage finally started to move, but just barely ![]() Stewball finally decided he'd better lay low and tried to be inconspicuous by pulling in between Richard Olson's '29 sedan and Dan's other delivery. It didn't work.

After returning from the Road Trip, the four nominees for "Best Paint" got together for this glamour shot. (l. to r.) Ben Stone's Kaddy, Tommy May's late-arriving panel truck, Mike Boyle's luminescent pickup and Clare Gilbert's deep blue Willys. ![]() The competition turned into a real drag race with Ben Stone pulling away from Tommy at the top end to win the coveted trophy. ![]() Photos can't do any of these paint jobs justice. They're all superb and must been seen in person to be fully appreciated. Congratulations to all the contestants! While Tommy drove ahead to pose for glamour shots, the rest of the guys in the Alabama contingent were left to fend for themselves on the long road to Mays Landing. John Collett's two rag-tops were pretty thirsty when they arrived, but Tim K's beautiful hard top Chevy custom (a replica of a 1/25th-scale model) needed some help getting to the pumps. Tim's tough looking, unsympathetic pals didn't offer much assistance. ![]() Upon arriving at the pumps, the 'Bama Boyz did what they normally do and proceeded to fill up - not realizing that pumping your own gas in New Jersey is illegal. Naturally, the police were called to the scene. Is that a smirking Tommy May in the background? ![]() To make matters worse, it turns out that none of the Boyz had enough money for gas and John had lost his wallet at a Tennessee "Stuckey's". ![]() Talking their way out of it was out of the question. The Mays Landing police don't take kindly to slick southern trouble makers. In spite of the problems, Tim's Chevy looks pretty good. Nice wheels. There was nothing left to do but watch their cars be towed away one-by-one. Dan Stobert's wrecker was enlisted to do the nasty deed. ![]() On the UP side, the tow job gave us a chance to get a close look at John Collett's '57. ![]() The Alabama law breakers were invited to stay put and converse with the fence until suitable transportation could be arranged. A news photographer from the Mays Landing Telegraph was on hand to cover this future front page story.

After the troublemakers were taken car of, we were able to browse around the grounds again and check out more cool stuff. Our first stop was the Barter Box, where some pretty impressive iron was up for sale. Karl-O trailered in a straight and clean Tudor body that has great potential and Richard Olson was trying to get rid of his '40. But the biggest surprise was Hollywood Jim's COUPE! After all the trouble it caused, HJ was willing to part with it for a VERY good price. In another section of the Fairgrounds we got a last look at the Giveway Kars that will soon be raffled off to some lucky Kruizers. It was tough to get a shot without a crowd of people around, but here we see (L. to R) Merc's two racers, Big Sully's contributions to the cause - a late model Surf Wagon and some substantial muscle, which is being admired by Chef Bink (Do we see a Scrapple Racing Team in the future?), David King's immaculately restored "T" and Chris's beautiful flatbed Chevy. Get ready......The raffle is just days away!!! ![]() Somewhere in America there's a big pile of discarded fenders. A meeting of the newly formed "Fraternity of Fenderless Friends" resulted in this colorful shot. Starting from the bottom of the picture, we have "Hot Rod Richard" Olson's gunmetal blue "T", HJ's Rat, Steve Curbishley's roadster, and five deuces owned by Chester Fesmire, Ken Hamilton, Karl Osolinski, Virgil Suarez and (having pulled his car out of the Barter Box for this historic shot) Hollywood Jim Fernandez, respectively. A close look at this picture also reveals that the Bama Boyz have raised enough money to get their cars out of hock and back to the Fairgrounds. Also, we can see ubiguitous Virgil and his ubiquitous sign. One of the most important people around the Speed Shop and the Kruize is the guy who delivers the gas...and we DON'T mean Chef Bink at the Scrapple Van. Steve Curbishley in his Gilmore tanker is our VIP when it comes to keeping the wheels turning. Howard is running low and decided it's time to fill the tank. ![]() Looks like there are some neat trucks over by the fence. Let's go get a closer look..... ![]() Turns out that the fat fendered fellas at each end are owned by Dan Stobert. The red one is Chester Fesmire's and the other one is Mike Boyle's "Best Paint" finalist. Pretty slick wheels at ANYBODY's show. Speaking of Chester, he fired up the Fesmire Flyer and his slightly more modern ride to pose for this picture: "Study in Red Race Cars and Building Trim". ![]() There was quite alot happening at the pumps, especially when Dan Frizzell pulled up in his Chick Magnet Vintage Porsche. ![]() Back on the grounds we came upon another gaggle of vintage muscle (L. to R.): Melvin Jones' white-hot Cobra, Richard Olson's silver '69 Camaro and Ron Royston's little red Corvette. ![]() While we were setting up our camera equipment, Tommy Kortman kruized by in his '40 Ford gasser. This car is not only painted gold, it attracts gold. (Trophies, that is)

Throughout the Kruize we've been hearing about the balloon responsible for the overhead photos. Well, here it is. While all this was going on, the "Mizpah Mizphits Rod & Kustom Kar Club" had dragged out their Teeter-Totter, which immediately attracted a crowd of spectators and a line of participants. ![]() The idea is to balance your car on the precarious pivoting platform within a 3-minute time limit. First in line was Steve Curbishley's Kustom Kubelwagen, piloted by some of his female friends. Sometimes it helps to have a car full of people to help balance to load. Extra people didn't help in this case, though, as the girls rocked back and forth without stopping in the middle for the whole three minutes. ![]() As the "Giggle-wagen" pulled away, a very serious John Collett pulled onto the platform, determined to undo his earlier humiliation at the gas pumps. ![]() ...but it just wasn't to be. He just swayed back and forth, too. In this case, the stick shift didn't help any. His three minutes up, John slowly pulled off the boards.

Car after car faced the same fate, including Richard Olson in his slammed Merc. The low center of gravity didn't help at all. ![]() As a defeated Richard limped away, Sully pulled onto the platform.... ![]() .......only to face the same ignominious fate. This isn't as easy as it looks. ![]() An audible gasp rose through the crowd as perfectionist and "never say die"-hard Richard Olson returned to the line in his rollback AND his 4-Sale Forty. If he can't balance one, snickered the crowd, how does he expect to balance TWO?? ![]() Back and forth he went, time after time, the platform ends banging on the ground with each failed attempt. Through it all, we swore we heard Richard whispering "...I think I can....I think I can...." as the 3-minute time limit ticked away. ![]() 2-minutes and 43-seconds into his pass, Richard did the impossible as the platform slowly tilted and leveled off in perfect balance. ![]() He did it!! The platform held steady for a good 30-seconds, proving it was under control.
