Rose made her way upstairs and into the room that she had changed in earlier...Kasim's room.

She yanked the veil off her head and undid the top few buttons on the long high necked dress, feeling like it was restricting her breathing.

Pacing the room, she spun to face the door when she heard gunshots somewhere further along the hallway outside and she ran back to the door, locking it as Kasim had told her to, cursing herself for forgetting.

She went back to her pacing, the minutes seeming to drag by as she waited for Kasim to come back to her.

Farik gathered his men, wondering where Kasim was and why he had not already done what was expected of him...there could only be two reasons, neither of which were favorable.

Heading across the room he saw two of il-Samiir's men stood opposite Kasim, one had his gun raised and aimed at Kasim.

Reaching into his pocket, Farik slowly pulled out his own weapon and readied it, waiting to see if Kasim had the situation under control before he intervened in any way.

"Let me go!"

Basha'ir struggled in the man's arms, for the second time in as many days struggling with man manhandling her; carrying her into the nearby room.

She wouldn't give up! Would not give him his way, struggling harder as he carried her toward the low divan in the room... tossing her down... pinning her in place with a tight grasp against the uppermost layer of clothing she wore..

"Well now... isn't this a turn up for the books. Farik's bitch, on her back... and no one to stop me taking what I want."

Basha'ir let outa string of defiant - very colourful - Arabic. But inside she was terrified when the man ran the flat of the blade of a knife upward along the fabric of her sirwal, beneath her abaya.

Kasim caught Sa'ib's wrist, forcing his hand higher, and the shot Sa'ib fired missed completely, going high to lodge in the ceiling, even as Kasim followed through, and twisted Sa'ib's wrist around behind his back - bringing the man to his knees in a single surprised move - to dig the barrel of his own weapon into the back of the man's neck from behind.

"Call off the dogs, Sa'ib," he hissed softly... "Or Farik loses his security deposit, and we have to call in the maid service to clean what's left of your head from the carpet. Your choice."

He would have said more, but in that second, following two rapid, but silenced shots from his gun, Rashad came tumbling backwards, down the stairs.

Farik's mouth twitched in a grim smile as Kasim joked about him losing his security deposit on the villa and as his men gathered up il-Samiir's and Kasim asked his enemy to make his choice, two shots sounded from up the stairs and Rashad tumbled to the foot of the stairs behind Kasim.

Swearing colorfully in Arabic, Farik rounded Kasim and stepped over Rashad's prone body to take the stairs two at a time.

"Someone see to him," he barked out behind him as he headed for the master bedroom, anger boiling up in him that some of il-Samiir's men had had the audacity to sneak up stairs...

If anyone had touched Basha'ir....

He all but kicked their bedroom door open, gun drawn, the sight before him making a red mist descend over his eyes.

Half strangled by the hold the man had on her abaya, Basha'ir struggled still more, kicking out at the man even as he ran his knife up the inside of her leg, only the flat of the blade but still - he was making his intentions perfectly clear.

"I will never yield to a snake like--"

She helped as the door bounced on it's hinges, as Farik stormed into the room, he had a gun in his hands, and Basha'ir was in little doubt that he would use it.

** ** **

Duqaq growled softly at the interruption, and tugged on the woman's abaya harder still to bring her in front of him as he turned, shiifting the position of the knife as he turned to press it hard against the underside of the woman's chin, even as he held her against him.

He snarled as he saw it was Farik...

"Glad you could join this little party... now set down the gun before I start carving up this little beauty... she doesn't need to have her face intact for the games I intend to play."

Kasim twisted still harder as Sa'ib did not move or speak a word, hearing the unmistakeable sound of the man's wrist breaking in his grasp a second before Sa'ib cried out...

"Mercy! All right! All right.. Enough!"

"Call them off!" Kasim demanded. "Now!"

He twisted on the arm again until Sa'ib did as he was told... and in the wake of it, il-Samiiri calmly appeared at the foot of the stairs - as if he had been wholy unaware of the plot.

Kasim doubted that very much.

"Why, Sa'ib," il-Samiiri asked almost softly, as Kasim let him go, and backed up - but kept his gun trained on the man. "Why disobey me, and break 'brother' Farik's peace this way...?"

Sa'ib did not answer.

"Under the circumstance, Kasim, perhaps it would be better if I, and my men departed - don't you think?" He paused, "Please be assured that I knew nothing of this..."

"I know you," Kasim growled, barely glancing his way.

"Then you know that it is in both our best interests - mine and Farik's - if I be allowed to leave - with my men - Now."

"That will be up to Farik!" Kasim spat.

il-Samiiri shrugged, but nodded to two of his men who took Sa'ib into careful custody. "Then we will wait."

The whole time the other man spoke and shifted position, holding Basha'ir in front of him as a human shield, pressing his knife against her, Farik had the measure of him...already had his shot lined up and as soon as the other man stopped speaking he said,

"And you do not need breath for where you are going," and pulling the trigger he fired a shot that landed in the middle of the man's forehead sending him sprawling backwards and away from Basha'ir.

Holstering his gun, Farik moved forward and pulled her up and toward him.

"Are you alright?" he asked, his eyes checking her for any signs of injury.

Basha'ir let out a near scream at the sudden, loud sound of the gunshot filled the room, and then stumbled forward as the hold against her went slack.

She gripped the front of Farik's jacket... refusing to look behind her, as Farik pulled her toward him and asked if she was all right. She took a shuddering breath.

"I'm... I'm all right," she told him, letting to of the front of his jacket for long enough to straighten her hijab where it had slipped, whispering again. "I'm all right.."

Suddenly she found herself looking him over... checking that he was all right.

"Oh, Saad... these men--"

Farik pressed a kiss to her forehead, his mouth set in a grim line as she assured him she was alright, even checking him over.

"...have now started a personal war..." he grated, easing her away from him and going to the prone body of il-Samiir's man.

Wrapping the body in the top throw of the low divan, he bent and heaved the man over his shoulder.

Looking to Basha'ir he said,

"I will not be long...stay here..."

Walking from the room he headed for the stairs and down and once at the bottom he threw the man onto the ground at il-Samiir's feet.

"For the sake of my other guests, I will let this be, but for tonight only...when next we meet, one of us will die and I do not intend for it to be I..."

The dangerous gleam in his eyes told of his seriousness and of his determination to see his enemy bleed at his hands.

"Now...get out and take your dogs with you..."

Kasim put up his weapon only after the last of il-Samiiri's men had filed away - Watching as Farik, with barely concealed impatience saw to it that the rest of his guests left unhindered.

Kasim felt his own impatience growing, so was relieved when Farik nodded to him and told him they would talk in the morning... and considering himself dismissed, Kasim when took the stairs almost at a run, hurrying to check that Rose had done as he had bidden her, and kept herself safe.

(Basha'ir and Farik will continue in "Devotion"
Kasim and Rose wil continue in "My English Rose")
