It didn't take them long to get back to Kasim's apartment, and get the ball rolling with the first phase of the operation. Farik's second didn't take very kindly to being ordered around by his predecessor, but Kasim was not phased at all... gave as good as the sarcasm his replacement gave to him. Then Kasim had to turn his attention to less savory research... finding where they might take Basha'ir... |

Rose busied herself packing clothes for their trip. She felt useful, knowing that Farik wanted her to 'hack' something...though what, she wasnt sure...and she tried not to think about the consequences of doing such a thing for him if she got caught. Kasim wouldnt let her get caught... But then she was sure that Basha'ir hadnt thought that Farik would let be taken the way she had been... She shivered a little and resumed their packing. When she was done she went back out to the lounge where Farik was stood by her laptop, watching Kasim on the phone. She offered him a small smile which he returned. Awkward. "Do you have this machine backed up anywhere?" he asked and she nodded. "My work is stored on memory sticks." Farik nodded thoughtfully. "Is there anything on here you would like to keep?" She shook her head, "It's relatively new, there's only what it came with..." "Good, bring it with us, it can be destroyed afterwards...I will of course purchase another one for you to compensate." Rose swallowed. "Alright." Farik glanced at the hold-all she had brought from the bedroom and said, "That's all you're packing?" Rose blushed, "I didnt want to bring too much...I didnt think..." she paused as Farik interrupted her. "Rose, perhaps you dont understand, but you wont be able to return to this apartment for a long time after what we're about to do...if ever..." Rose paled. "I have a couple of cars on their way over to collect us...pack what you cant bear to leave and it will be stored for you." "But I...I like our apartment..." she said quietly, glancing to Kasim who seemed to be revelling in organising Farik's security and setting up the plan for the rescue. Looking back to Farik she thought she saw a sliver of regret in his dark eyes, but she didnt say more, merely turned and went back to the bedroom. Damn Farik. She didnt like where this was going...not able to return here...possibly never again...so what did that mean, that they would have to go back to living on his estate, Kasim working for him, her a virtual prisoner again... She opened a wardrobe door and promptly slammed it shut again, hard, trying to vent her frustration and tears of anger blurred her vision. |

Kasim recognised the set of Rose's back as she left the room, and even though he was mid conversation with the unit leader of group 3 in Farik's security, he followed her after a few seconds, heading for their room. He'd heard her conversation with Farik, and her protest about the apartment and he could guess what was going through her mind. He hung up on the unit leader and stepped into the bedroom in time to see her slamming the closet door. He walked up behind her and gently wrapped his arms around her. "You heard me tell him that I was not working for him, Rose." he said softly. Then he tenderly ran his hands down her sides and over the swell of their child. "And we would have had to move anyway soon enough. I want to give you a proper home, where we can raise our child... This only precipitates that move." He drew her back against his lean, hard body, and nuzzled at her softly. |

Time had blurred... As the drug coursed through her body - her nerve endings alive and sensitive - The dark man sat on a chair facing her, watching her calmly as she struggled, (mostly involuntarily) with her bindings. She felt the movement of the ship beneath her, and it left her nauseated... her stomach churning through the pain. After a while, just as the pain the drug had caused started to fade, the dark man got up from his seat and walked across the deck and wheeled a small trolley closer to where Basha'ir was restrained. He pulled his chair closer, and almost gently ran his fingers down from her shoulder to the wrist of one hand... her right... her oversensitive nerves sending shocking tingles through her body. "Take.... take your... hands off me!" she gasped, afraid of his intent. He did... but only when he had fastened the restraints on her hand along the side of the trolley. Then he spoke to her. "It never ceases to amaze me the... extremes the human body can withstand... take heat and cold for example..." As he spoke he picked up a blow torch from the top of the trolley, and carelessly lit the flame with a lighter from his pocket. Then he picked up what looked like a wood chisel, and held the blade within its flame turning it every now and then until the metal of the chisel grew to shine a reddish white colour. "You know... in some countries, this is a sign of strength - in others... an art - like tatooing. Both haram of course..." He took the chisel from the flame and handed the torch to a soldier that came to stand nearby. His mild manner suddenly hardened, and he looked her in the eye to ask. "Where is Farik?" "Don't..." Basha'ir squeaked. Knowing what was coming, but still unwilling to speak. "What are his plans?" "I can't tell you what I don't--!" Searing pain erupted up and down the sensitive inside of her arm as the interrogator pressed the blade of the chisel to her soft skin. Her flesh sizzled, and the smell of burning became more nauseating than ever... and Bashai'r could not even scream, the pain was so severe. Stars burst before her eyes, and the breath flew out of her in a rush until she thought her lungs would collapse. "Right handed, aren't you...? Farik...?" he reminded her lifting the chisel... only to move an inch or two down her arm and reapply the cooling metal, to burn her again. "Where is he?" This time Basha'ir managed to scream... as the interrogator made an irrevocable path down toward her right hand. |

Rose sighed, relaxing a little as Kasim pulled her back against her and nuzzled at her, his words settling into her mind. "You knew what I was thinking..." it was a statement rather than a question and she covered his hands with her own. "Promise me you wont let him talk you around..." she murmured, turning her head so that she faced his jawbone, "...I dont want to go back to that." |

"Listen to me carefully, Rose, hmm?" he pressed his cheek to hers as he spoke, curling himself around her. "Farik is my friend, my brother... and as such I will help him in his times of need... and I will celebrate with him in his times of joy... and I would mourn with him in his times of sorrow. I will be there for him." He gave her a moment to let his words sink in, before he continued. "But I will not work for him again as I once did. "Make no mistake, that does not mean I no longer agree with his thinking or with his cause... just that I have... other priorities now.. and while I support him and would never give him up - to anyone - I will not let him own me as before. He may ask, and receive my help... but he may not order and demand. FaHma? Do you understand the difference?" |

After I moment, Rose turned in his arms to face him and reached up to caress his face. "I understand, yes," she replied, smiling softly at him. "I love you..." Taking a breath she said, "We'd better make a start on this packing then...is there anything in particular you dont want to leave behind?" |

Kasim shook his head, and sighed. "Most of my things are in storage anyway from the move from Saudi," he said. "If needs be I can pull something out. Just pack the essentials, Habibti, I will make do." He turned around the room just to make sure he wasn't making a liar of himself. "I trust you." He kissed her softly. "I love you, my Rose. This will not take long, whatever the outcome... and I will be honest," he looked over his shoulder to make sure that Farik was not nearby. "I do not expect to get her out alive." |

The smile Rose wore as he spoke of his trust and love faded as he said he did not expect Basha'ir to get out alive. "That poor woman..." she murmured, reaching to get a suitcase from the top of the wardrobe, then indicating that Kasim get it for her instead. When he did and placed it on the bed she began to pack a few more of their clothes, "Do you think she'll talk?" |

Kasim took down the case and opened it for her... then sighed at the question. "That was why I asked Farik his reasons. Had he indicated he was afraid for her speaking..." he shook his head. "I believe she will... try very hard not to talk, and that is why I believe she will not survive." He shook his head. "We must get to her before she unwittingly reveals anything." |

Rose nodded at his words. "I see..." she replied and was about to say he should go carry on with the planning when she had a thought. "What do you think he wants me to hack?" |

Kasim shook his head. "I would guess he wants you to get into the Saudi authorities network... to find out what they know... what is going on. Where they might be holding Basha'ir, but I don't know." He took her hand and drew her away from the packing for a moment. "The man he named... her interrogator... he is their top man, the most brutal. He is someone I once knew..." |

"Samiiri," Kasim spat. "He was the kind of man that he would often entertain. When I worked for Samiiri..." he shook his head. "There were times that he... 'employed' the man's particular talents." |

"I see," Rose replied, a shiver going up her spine at the thought of the circles he had moved in...still did to some extent. Trying to push unwelcome thoughts out of her mind she said, "You should go and finish up with Farik, I'll sort our things." |
