Basha'ir's whimpers increased as Farik moved quickly with her in his arms, each step jolting her already agonised body.

"I'm sorry... I'm... sorry.... I..." she all but chanted as he moved.

Kasim threw himself into the driver's side of the car, watching as Farik all but threw himself and Basha'ir into the car, then he (as the other drivers) gunned the accellerator, the tyres spinning on loose sand and gravel as he backed up at speed, before wrenching the wheel around and hitting the gas pedal again to shoot forward away from the bunker.

They weren't a moment too soon - the whoosh of the incoming missile could clearly be heard over the sound of the straining car engine. The car bounced on uneven ground as Kasim fought to get them clear of the blast radius in time.

And then his rear view mirror was nothing but a mass of flames and exploding debris as the bunker became a conflagration behind them. The shockwave lifted the rear of the car for a moment, causing Kasim to skid a little as the back end came down again - but at least they were alive, and hurrying toward where the chopper would meet them, to get them more quickly to Farik's villa.

Farik held Basha'ir on his lap as Kasim drove them away from the blast and he cradled her head against his shoulder, reaching for the blanket he had brought to wrap around her.

"You're safe now my love...safe..." he murmured against her matted hair, wrapping her in the blanket to try and warm her icy limbs.

Safe.

The word wrapped around her almost like the softness of the blanket she could feel wrapping around her lacerated skin.

She tried to open her eyes, but didn't have the strength. She was so cold, and began trembling against the warmth of the body that she knew, without seeing him, was Farik.

"Saad," she sobbed as she shook with ever increasing tremors. "I'm... I'm sorry... I... sorry..."

"You have nothing to be sorry for my love...shush now...rest...we'll soon have you home and then everything will be better, I promise."

Farik closed his eyes, avoiding Kasim's gaze in the rear-view mirror.

He had brought this upon her...no-one else...

Was this what he wanted for his family?

He now understood why Kasim had wanted out...maybe he should think...he cut the thought off.

"How long until we reach the chopper?" he asked of Kasim as Basha'ir's trembling got worse.

"Just up ahead," Kasim said, and glanced at Farik in the rear view mirror, catching his gaze, and not missing the spark of fear in Farik's eyes. "Maybe two minutes... I'll... I'll call ahead."

He didn't wait for Farik to agree, just picked up the radio from the seat beside him, and keyed the mic three times in rapid succession - the pre-arranged signal for 'Emergency, start rotas... immediate lift off required'

After just a few moments, the answering pattern of apparent static came back. He looked in the rear view mirror again, catching Farik's eye.

"Flight time from here is just over 20 minutes - they'll be ready."

Farik wasn't comforted by the short flight time.

Basha'ir had obviously been tortured badly and he had no idea how much blood she had lost or how badly she had been injured internally.

He nuzzled his head against hers and kissed her temple again.

"Hold on...for me...please hold on..." he whispered.

It wasn't much longer before Kasim brought the car to a halt not far from the chopper and Farik waited until his brother got out and opened the door for them before he moved to get out, keeping Basha'ir tight against his chest as he instinctively ducked as he headed for the chopper.

Kasim opened the door for Farik, and then turned to follow him as he tossed the keys to one of their soldiers, who would drive the car back. He helped Farik get Basha'ir... who by this time had lapsed into a semi-conscious haze, into the chopped, and then climbed in beside him, signalling the pilot for immediate take of.

Pulling on his headset he ordered, "Take the shortest route possible, and radio ahead to the house - let them know we'll need immediate assistance as soon as we touch down."

"Understood," the pilot immediately obeyed. Setting the nose of the chopper off toward Farik's villa. They would land on the rear lawn... in just 20 minutes, Basha'ir's fate would be in the hands of Ameen and his medical team.
