Red eyes from camera flash is caused by light going through the pupil hiting the back of the eye and then travelling back out and into the camera. As the returned flash light is so bright it blurs and normally makes your whole eyes look red, but if you get it in focus it will be just the pupils. Oh and it's red because the back of your eyes are full off blood vessels.
