I'm sorry for being realistic but saying she has no legal standing is completely wrong and not helping. I'm not saying she definately will take legal action and I hope she doesn't but to say otherwise would be misleading.

I know, I didn't explain myself correctly. I meant to say that while that mistake needed to be corrected, you could've offered some advice to the OP as well. :)

Surely the woman is at fault for not hiring lifters? Surely if it was that valuable, she wouldn't have minded paying a moving company?
I'd have to agree with you there. Rather than a couple of guys who do this kind of thing for a living, a couple of chaps with no real experience(at least I assume not).

Unfortunatly I don't see a way out of this. Although even if she did take legal action it doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be as bad as you expect. At least I hope not.

Has anyone from this forum actually studied law?

Yeah fair point, the usual stuff, ask any local Citizens Advice Bureau or equivalents (I think Nightwheel is in the US or am I imagining stuff again) what the position would be, honestly theres not much to do unless she does actually take legal action other than be aware of anything that can lessen your responsibility (not professionals etc), best advice in the interim would be get down the pub and have a grumble about it.

BA (Hons) in Law, four years studying consumer and contract law* (I did a criminal law class for three months in that time as well and was the only one who knew what a bayonette was, what are our kids learning if they're growing up not knowing the names of dangerous implements! I ask you, kids these days ^o) )

Sis's sister doesn't know who Beethoven is and she's learning about a million musical instruments at school.
She also didn't know Ghostbusters was a film and not just a cartoon, but I can't really blame the education system for that...

Why would someone learning about musical instruments need to know about a dog?

I was worried when it turned out a few of my friends didn't know that the film Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is based on the book by Roald Dahl rather than the film Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

Any idea how much the dresser was worth? If it's not too horrendous and she is looking at legal action, it may help to make an offer to reimburse some of the cost, You'll want to find out if she is seriosuly considering legal action first and if you yourself would be named, if your friend was being paid and he was paying you then your likely in the clear. Hopefully nothing will come of it but with something like this it's usually better to find out you were worrying over nothing for a short while than suddenly get a nasty surprise.

it all just sounds really fishy. This idiot owner should have insurance on something like that...as ANYTHING could happen. Sounds like (to me anyway) that she really wanted to save all the money she could, and doesn't really care about the antiques... when she saw that it was broken... all she saw was dollar signs... $$$

I really don't think you did anything wrong... as this should be classified as an accident. You are not a professional mover, and you were not told of the value of the item before moving. She has no insurance and she's also greedy.

No one has even suggested she does not have insurance, and that it was an accident does not magically alleviate someone of all resposnsibility. Yes she can reclaim the cost of the dresser on her insurance but that just means her insurance company comes after you for the cost instead, and they're usually a lot worse to deal with.
Professional or not they agreed to perform a task for monetry reimbursement, that's worse on them for accepting to do a job in the first place.
If someone offered me money to remove one of their kidneys and died whilst I performed the operation I couldnt turn round to the court and say "well it's their fault for hiring me, I'm not a proffessional"
