I - literally - just got back from the cinema to watch Up with my girlfriend, and I was actually quite surprised that, despite being rated U and incorporating humour, there were some pretty deep issues in the film. Well, not deep as such, but I found that some parts of it were slightly deeper than you might like to show young kids. For example: Spoiler: click to toggle Obviously, this could have just been the audience that was watching, but it just seems a little much for a U rated film which, usually, are happy, cheery films all the way through. Either way, I thought it was pretty good and a lot of the humour used was pretty clever. Great animation and attention to detail too. |

I remember hearing a while back that during the first 10 minutes of a preview showing everyone started crying. I personally dont watch films to cry, I watch them to be entertained and maybe get a quick thrill from a tittiful sex scene. Up intrigues me though seeing how seemingly everyone is kneeling down to suck on its balls. But im sure i'll never get around to seeing it. |

It's really just a typical Pixar film. A guy wants to do something. A guy goes to do something. Something goes wrong. They go on an adventure. The guy does something. But unlike most films this one just goes Equilibrium > Disruption of Equilibrium > Reinstatement. There's not really much else that happens in it. Still good. |

I dunno - I dont think, say, Cars got people crying floods of tears. I mean Toy Story 1 and 2 are somewhat emotional films in bits but with Up it comes across that they've shoved stuff in for emotional responses to get a full effect
I dont find them erotic really. I mean take the sex scene in Oldboy. Thats just awesome because of how well its shot. |

I wasn't looking forward to Up as I didn't think Pixar could beat Wall*E, and I was right, they couldn't. But Up is a really good film, I think the first ten minutes of the movie is what made it for me, totally wasn't expecting a kids movie to start like that. Then again, I watched The Plague Dogs, Jesus fucking Christ, that's horrific way to start a kids film. Toy Story 3 looks pretty good though, also follows the foreshadowing of their eventual fate they mentioned at the end of Toy Story 2. Quite odd really, as the original story for 3 was really about a mass recall of faulty Buzz Lightyears. But Pixar really seem to rip off Ghibli movies now with their endings. Spoiler: click to toggle

The original story sounds positively riveting. And I see what you mean about Ghibli. The whole film had the feel that at some point, a massive castle was going to appear through the clouds. |

'Rowf (a Labrador-mix) and Snitter (a smooth fox terrier) are two of many dogs used for experimental purposes at an animal research facility in the Lake District of north-western England.' Ugh yeah I can imagine how that'd start out. Yeah I really liked the original story to Toy Story 3 and it seems now they're using one of the ideas they had for the first film and it seems like it'll work out well. |

In other words, Todorov's narrative theory: Equilibrium, Disequilibrium, New Equilibrium. I thought most films followed that sort of structure. And most novels for that matter. Anyway: I would rather like to see 'Up'. |

They do follow Todorov's theory, but most of them with 5 steps. Equilibrium, Disruption, Recognition of disruption, Attempt to restore, and Reinstatement of Equilibrium. But in Up it sort of feels like the Recognition and Attempt to restore are missing. Possibly because it's a Pixar film, and things restore themselves. |

I loved Up, best film of the year. Considering that Inglourious Basterds, Gran Torino, Watchmen, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, District 9 and Zombieland all came out this year, that's saying something. I love Pixar - their films speak to me. A person trapped in thier own life, dreaming of something better, reminds me of me. Pixar films are what kids should be watching, rather than crap like Aliens in the Attic. And I cried. Three times. |

Oh I can do better than that and show you the first part... Hard to fathom this was pitched as a kids film, probably why it bombed in the US. But it's considered a cult classic now. |

It's a shame we don't bother with animation over here anymore. Some of the best, darkest animation was made in the UK, like When The Wind Blows and Watership Down. Jon Hurt is in The Plague Dogs, right? I must buy that one after I've watched the rest on my pile. |
