Who Are The Advincolas?
By Norton Hedgehog

With Carlos Cruz joining the CWL roster and soon to compete under their banner very shortly, many around the world have been wondering who the largest family in wrestling now are and where they came from. To get to the bottom of things, wanting to know the whole history and life of the family, I traveled all the way to the Bronx, New York where The Jesus Freak and his lovely wife happily invited me to have dinner with them. At the time his parents and brothers weren’t at home, Carlos telling me that they were on the road with PRW, two of them back in the Jesus Freak Camp. During the scrumptious dinner, man can Cruz cook, Carlos shared with me stories of his family back in the Dominican Republic. The Bronx native informed me that their last name isn’t actually from his father's native country, but was told by his father that the very first Advincolas originated from an uncharted island. Carlos said that he’s been hard at work, hiring specialists to see if they could uncover his family’s exact genesis. Later in the night, he even allowed me to see several pictures that he dug up from out of his attic. And folks, if you were given a tour of the attic filled with memories old and new from top to bottom, you would think a movie of the Advincolas was being produced.

So who exactly are the Advincolas?

Well, let’s start off with the man who helped forge the competitors we know, love, and yes even hate today.

-The father of the Pastor, best known for his days in the ring as a golden glove winner, went toe to toe with the very best in the Dominican Republic. The only son of a Haitian mine worker and a Dominican housemaid, Chori dropped out of school in the fourth grade to help out pay the bills of the family. When his father took him to the neighborhood’s gym to visit a friend, Chori quickly fell in love with the sport. Many considered him to be DR’s version of Muhammad Ali. He never ceased in pushing his opponent’s buttons and punching their lights out. Chori was nicknamed El Quita Suenos, due to the reason his fights never allowed his viewers to pass out in boredom. He always enjoyed giving his fans a good show, even when his trainers despised when he showboated during a big-time fight. After retiring in the forties, having won seven World Championships and walking away with a 39-4, 23 KOs record, Chori was later inducted into Boxing’s Hall of Fame, being the first to cement the Advincola name in the stars. With his passing last year, the current Advincolas have sworn to make their founding father proud with their accomplishments.

-The next was Chori’s younger brother, an individual who was known to be soft spoken and kind to others. Jose was a big time body builder in the Caribbean, traveling all over the world to partake in countless of competitions, also appearing on several worldwide known talk shows and sports magazines. At a young age, Jose was constantly made fun of for being bigger than most of the kids in his school, most of the times being called names such as big oaf and Jose the Caveman. When Jose was too scared to defend himself, Chori came in and avenged his brother’s name. Not wanting to always be rescued, Jose was pleased when his father asked him if he wanted to join his brother in the gym Chori was training to be a boxer. From there El Oso (The Bear) Jose Advincola was born. Once his days of striking poses had ended, he became the Dominican Republic’s police commissioner for about 20 years.

-Here’s another fun fact about both Jose and Chori. After their accolades had reached worldwide, a wrestling promotion in Puerto Rico, La Gran Estrella Mundial (The World Grand Star), reached out to them and signed them to a three-year deal. Within a year and a half, Los Hermanos Advincolas became the company’s longest reigning Tag Team Champions, which later on retired with them once the company closed it’s doors.

Iha Advincola

-New York Times Best-Selling author, Oscar winning actress and former Attorney General of the Dominican Republic Iha has always stood up for the rights of the oppressed. Her acclaimed novel, Voy a Luchar Por Mi País Hasta Que Mi Ultimo Aliento (English=I'll Fight for My Country Till My Last Breath), was later produced into a major motion picture where she had the privilege in acting as herself. The Advincolas First Lady has always said that she worried for her husband in his fights, constantly asking him when he’ll hang up his gloves and boots. Giving birth to ten children, five boys, and five girls, Iha was always trying to maintain order in the house, and when the children wouldn’t listen to her she would sick her husband on them. The former Attorney General has had dinners with former Presidents of the United States of America, always working on ways to better the situation of the homeless in both countries. Happily retired in the Dominican Republic, I called Iha and was told her that she sees shades of her late husband, Chori, in each one of her grandsons, saying that if he was still here he would constantly make it to every one of their matches.

WOW, that’s a lot of Colas! This family has certainly done huge things in their individual fields, not only to further their family legacy but to also help bring light to their roots and those who paved the way for them. When I left the Advincola’s home, getting into the car with a warm tray of amazingly prepared Dominican food, I couldn’t help but have a newfound respect and admiration for them, feeling more monumental memories from this new generation of Advincolas getting ready to bloom and be revealed to all those watching. So now that you know the family tree of the biggest pack in wrestling today, Tweet us or comment on who’s your favorite of the Advincolas.
