Amidst the thrum of city noise - of jaded screeching traffic and wailing siren bells - a fluorescent twinkling star scape buzzed with incandescent indifference. Beneath those ran a crackled patch tarmac, ensnared in chain link on three sides and held by a crowding spectre of oblong shadows.

It sat waiting, interminably waiting in reverential silence, for decisions far beyond to be cast down.

Sometime ago a choice had been made. It was by no means an easy choice for one to make. In fact, it was likely not ones to make alone. That decision had unset the careful balance of all things, pulled and restrung every single strand of fate, and set the world, now waiting, on an uncertain course.

It was the right decision, of that most would agree, but it had come at a cost.

Sacrifices would need to be made.

The vacant lot buzzed with uncertain energy. It's lights fizzled and cracked until one by one they burst, sending sparks scattering through the air like a dozen new year fireworks. Meanwhile the air about them boiled; it blistered and bubbled and pulled itself taut, like too little gauze trying to hide a wound.

All at once the world split, torn asunder as white light spilled out and drowned the sky. Through it a bolt struck, tearing a fissure in the asphalt before fleeing the blast in whispering tendrils that soon faded to nothingness.

After a moment the light dissipated, the world settled and left in its wake a woman; her head down, red hair spilling past her cheeks, a fist buried in the fracture. A moment more and she stood, dirt spilling from her form as she drew her head back, cracked her lips and spoke with such weight and reverence.

Shit! Fuck! Shit! Shit! I did it again! Fuck! Goddamnit! Fuck!

The woman kicked at the hole in the earth, albeit with a great deal less panache than before.
