We open up in an examination room at a hospital in Alabama. The sterile environment is only disturbed by the world famous "Geekette Extraordinaire" Cali-Kate is sitting on the exam bed in a patient's gown. At her side is Tyler Storm, who holds her hand lovingly as she kicks her legs absent-mindedly over the side. Her heels make inconsistent contact with the side of the bed. She's definitely nervous about being here, but calmed by his presence. "This is fucking stupid. Why'd I let you talk myself into this?" "Because a good check up on things never hurts anybody, missy." "Yea and then I have to ask about the blood work a couple weeks ago and get my vaccinations updated if we go anywhere again." "Alright alright, fine. I'm very sorry I am having you do this, but...you know this kind of stuff is important for a few of our future plans, love. That's all I'm wanting to make sure of." Kate smiled slightly at Tyler as he played along with her while still making his point. "Fine, you're right of course. I just... well, to be honest babe, I have a bad feeling about this." "I get you have...I could see the look on your face when we got here. But hey...no one said it would be easy, right?" "No, I guess not, but still I just..." Kate shakes her head a little unable to express fully what she is feeling. After several months, she just knows there's something wrong, but she's been trying to convince herself it's likely nothing in this time. "Tyler, every time I come to any doctor it's always something. If it isn't the stupidity of getting thrown into cages or getting blinded by some fucking underhanded tactics it's I'm doing too much of this or that. Every time it's always some little adjustment I have to make." "And I wish I could promise you those little adjustments wouldn't be needed, but life plans other things all the time. Life is a lot of work, some of it fine and some it it strenuous and exhausting. But it's all worth it in the end." Kate sighed and looked around the room again at the many charts and posters regarding health and most especially reproductive health. She fiddled a little bit in her spot, pulling at the gown. "Just... that I wish it wouldn't take so long though. Isn't that the reason these places have their own labs now? Why aren't they done yet?" As if in response to her question there's a knock at the door. "Hey, good timing. Scared me to death...but good timing." "Come in please." The doctor who entered was a man just coming to his prime himself. Kate wondered how someone so young could be such an expert, but as long as he had the answers she needed. She knew what she wanted of course, but the answers she needed to hear were on that clipboard the doctor was holding. "Well I must say Ms. Bos, I wish half my patients were as healthy as you. I wouldn't have such a time dealing with them." "Well thanks doctor. I guess after getting injured so much in the ring I really want to keep my body as fit as possible so I don't have to endure the same crippling fate that usually falls to other competitors." She made a glance over at Tyler with a grin. "Usually."[/b][/color] The doctor made a slight chuckle. "Well the good news is everything is up to date so if you do end up travelling again, not just to Rome, but pretty much anywhere in the world, you should be set." A noticeable pause hung in the air between the three occupants in the room and this suddenly made Kate extremely uncomfortable. While she had indeed been here to check up on herself after the beating she took a month ago and the subsequent action she had seen since then, there was yet another reason for her visit and the fact that the doctor attempted to play around it was firing off alarms in her mind. "So then, that's everything? Nothing... nothing out of the ordinary?" The twitching of the doctor's lips unsettled her more as he looked at Tyler. "Perhaps this is best done in private." Tyler looks over at Kate who just nods at him silently. Tyler nods back wrapping her in a hug and giving her a kiss on the forehead before leaving the room. Kate watches him go with a sorrowful look on her face. Much as she wanted him to stay based on the sheer tension in the room with the doctor's response, she knew he would be there later. This was something she wanted to prove to herself. Kate took in a big breath and turned to the doctor. "Tell me. Is... is it true?" The doctor nodded his head slowly. Kate's eyes immediately started welling up and overflowing. "No..." "I'm sorry Ms. Bos but I ran the tests just as you asked. The linings within your uterus are crawling with NKCs, levels we don't normally see in women that aren't ovulating." Kate's lips purse together and she shakes her head, the tears continuing to come down her cheeks. "I'm afraid the worse news is that because you aren't currently ovulating, those levels will only increase during ovulation. That would also explain your relatively heavy periods recently." Kate's mouth has fallen open in a soundless cry and she falls onto the examination bed in a fetal position. Her red face tells the story of how much this news has hit her. Finally, the sobs emerge. They are loud, rapid and breathy as she tries to catch her breath through her emotional state. For just a second she buries her eyes in her arms before looking back up. "How did I get this? I've had examinations before and no one ever said anything about this. Why wouldn't anyone at least try to mention this? What the fuck is the use of these tests if you people can't give all the answers that you fucking get?!" "Ms. Bos, I can't speak for any other physician who has given you an exam and I can only guess as to the why's and how's in this. It's possible the miscarriage you suffered two years ago has triggered your body to identify any fertilized egg as a threat." "I thought the prenatals were supposed to lower that." "In a normal situation yes, but as I said, the number of your NKCs are inordinately high." Kate squeezes her eyes shut and falls back down to cry more. She practically wails her grief which causes the doctor to flinch, but he tries to remain professionally detached in this scenario. Kate shakes her head and attempts to compose herself. "There's... there's treatments right? Something to be done to correct this?" "Steroids are an option, but the specific kind and amount of steroids you would need may not be conducive to a post-conception situation." "What are the odds?" The doctor sighs as he thinks for a moment. "Optimistically, I'd say 1:50,000." "No-o..." Kate shudders as she looks down, her arms folded across herself as she rocked back and forth for a moment. "No, no, no, no..." Kate drew in a deep breath and managed to sniffle a little before she looked at the doctor. "Anything else?" "No. The nurse up front already has your discharge papers. I'm truly very sorry to bring you this news." Kate shook her head and turned away dismissively getting off the bed. The doctor nodded and left the room. After the door shut, Kate broke down one more time on the floor. "Why?! Why?! What the fuck did I do? Why?! Why, why, why?" Kate curled into a ball again for a few moments. She shook her head in disbelief. She mumbled curses under her breath and cried a few minutes more. When it finally hurt to cry anymore, she managed to pick herself up and get out of her patient's gown and into her normal clothes and grabs her purse. Outside in the waiting area, Tyler waits with Jen and Stacy. They see the doctor come out and whisper something to the nurse to which the nurse gives a shocked, but rather unsurprised look and nods knowingly. A few minutes later, Kate finally emerges barely taking steps, walking in a fugue type state. Tyler immediately jumps up and rushes to her followed by Stacy and Jen. Tyler grips on to her. "Kate? Kate, what's wrong?" Kate just stares blankly at him for a couple seconds then to Stacy and Jen before starting to walk to the nurse's desk. Tyler, Stacy and Jen all follow close behind, but not getting into her personal space as she fills out the discharge paperwork silently. When she is finished, she turns back around to Tyler. "I just wanna go home." |
