Season
2014 · Midwinter
Winter didn't just come in gently, it started off with biting winds--and has since gone full blast with snowfall after snowfall. Sunny days are few, with a gray overcast being the expected norm. Blizzard visibility is at best just arms length, and when the snow isn't coming in hard, it's sprinkling. The river flowing through the canyon now has a thick, frozen crust. Merchant travel has slowed to a trickle, and both Kepler and Port are lucky if they get new visitors with different wares at all.

At the joining of three rivers...
...there was a Weyr.
In the walls of the canyon lived the dragonriders of Canyon River Weyr. This small, unusual dwelling formed when the Weyrs of Pern agreed it was a good idea to establish an overflow destination as populations grew in the decades leading up to the 8th Pass of the Red Star. As the brigands of Kepler Hold began to make a name for themselves once again, tension clung to the riders and holders alike. The dragonriders of the so-called misfit Weyr had their jobs cut out for them as the 8th Pass began and the future looked uncertain indeed.
Welcome to Canyon River Weyr. We hope you enjoy your visit.

Provided personality types are more what you'd call guidelines, than actually set in stone. These are merely established, expected behaviors, but every dragon or wher is different.

Body:
C: U: R:
Gold Female Highest-Ranking Female; 'Queen' Metallic Clutches 10-30 eggs; Once a Turn 70-80 feet long Impress to: Only to women or female-identifying
Golds reign over their own kind with their superior capacity to retain information for longer periods and their ability to breed. They are often highly intelligent and reserved, preferring to 'speak' only to their rider. They are notoriously fussy and self-aware of their status over their peers, requiring pampering and a great deal of respect. Provoking the ire of a gold is unwise -- a prideful gold is still a very powerful one, in both strength and influence.
Goldrider Players: Expected to be highly active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Responsible for appearances in threads that broadly impact the Weyr, clutch-laying posts, and hatching starter posts. May also begin celebratory feasts. Goldriders become leaders of the Weyr, managing the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive. Goldriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk.

Body:
C: U: R:
Hematite Female 2nd Highest-Ranking Female; Secondary Queen Metallic Clutches 5-15 eggs; Once a Turn 65-75 feet long Impress to: Any gender equally
Can Clutch or Flame; Chewing firestone renders them infertile permenantly Hematites are melanistic mutations of golds, and also differ greatly in personality. Gold dragons are known for their short tempers and demanding natures, but hematites are social sweethearts of the Weyr. Hematites are only demanding in that they are often overwhelmingly gregarious, more comfortable when they are surrounded by others and sharing affection with them. They still crave to be admired, but they would rather earn it by amazing you with their grace or approachability. Hematites often don't mind 'speak'ing to others that are not their riders.
When hematites Rise for their mating flights, they temporarily leave behind their geniality. The Weyr is then suddenly reminded that they are still queen dragons, and their flights are intense and energetic. Not all hematites who Rise produce eggs, however. Some riders choose to make fighters out of their hematites and feed them firestone -- this is widely considered acceptable, and hematites eagerly fight Thread with their comrades.
Hematiterider Players: Expected to be highly active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Responsible for appearances in threads that broadly impact the Weyr. If playing a clutching hematite you are responsible for clutch-laying posts and hatching starter posts. May also begin celebratory feasts. Hematiteriders become secondary leaders of the Weyr, managing the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive. Hematiteriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk.

Body:
C: U: R:
Bronze Male Highest-Ranking Male Metallic 60-70 feet long Impress to: Only to men or male-identifying
Proud, intelligent creatures, bronze dragons are the largest, strongest male dragons within a Weyr's population. They are leader types, self-assured and dignified, and their riders are often given important positions due to the bravery and aptitude most bronze dragons possess. Many male candidates secretly hope for a bronze dragon and all the status that comes with it. Bronzes are built to take the brunt of Threadfall on behalf of their fellows, and they are usually the expected winners of queenflights. Bronzes will fly any female dragon who Rises.
Bronzerider Players: Expected to be highly active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Responsible for appearances in threads that broadly impact the Weyr. May also begin celebratory feasts. Bronzeriders can win queenflights and will be made Weyrleader as a result. Weyrleaders help manage the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive, and they lead the fighting wings against Thread. Bronzeriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk.

Body:
C: U: R:
Jade Male 2nd Highest-Ranking Male Metallic 55-65 feet long Impress to: Usually to men or male-identifying, rarely women
Hematites originally produced several mutations themselves, the jade being one of them. If bronzes are proud, jades are downright arrogant. If bronzes are resourceful, jades are sly. Haughty and demanding as a queen, jades don't even leave time to pick fun at them -- you either respect them, or you get out of the way. Jades are green-saturated, machismo-driven bronze mutations and usually come with nasty, self-centered personalities. They pay attention to and remember very little if it doesn't involve their immediate interests or their own rider. They spare no affection or kind words to anyone but their rider, and as a result jades rarely bond with others. The only way to get on a jade's good side is to appeal to its vanity, and only then might they remember an outsider fondly. Jades often hatch aggressively and violently, and though this attitude disappates after bonding, Weyrs are still trying to establish a means to better protect their candidates when jades might be expected in a clutch. For now, the best advice most have to go on is to 'spread out'.
Jades will fly any female dragon who Rises, sometimes only for the right to gloat after winning.
Jaderider Players: Expected to be highly active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Responsible for appearances in threads that broadly impact the Weyr. May also begin celebratory feasts. Jaderiders can win queenflights and will be made Weyrleader as a result. Weyrleaders help manage the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive, and they lead the fighting wings against Thread. Jaderiders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk.

Body:
C: U: R:
Jasper Male 3rd Highest-Ranking Male Metallic 50-60 feet long Impress to: Any gender equally
An erythristic, lustrous mutation of brown dragons usually from gold clutches, jasper personalities possess everything that is hardy and dependable about their origin color, if a touch augmented. Sociable, encouraging, eager to work with others, they mentor over riders and their peers. They stop to assist those in need of them, chivalrous and surprisingly gentle for being larger dragons. They aren't just willing to lend a hand or defend the underdog -- jaspers are reliable to a fault. As any good knight would, jaspers sacrifice themselves for the good of their fighting wing or their queens. Their handsome orange-red hides often don't stay unmarred for long, and by old age wear an impressive smattering of scars, either defending friends in battle or against Thread.
Jaspers will fly any female dragon who Rises, though they often prefer queens.
Jasperrider Players: Expected to be reasonably active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Optional, but preferred, to appear in threads that broadly impact the Weyr. May also begin celebratory feasts. Jasperriders can win queenflights and will be made Weyrleader as a result, increasing expected responsibility. Weyrleaders help manage the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive, and they lead the fighting wings against Thread. Jasperriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk, though less so than queens, bronzes, or jades.

Body:
C: U: R:
Brown Male 4th Highest-Ranking Male Chromatic 45-55 feet long Impress to: Usually to men or male-identifying, occasionally women
Brown dragons are known for their easy, casual natures, though being laid-back and approachable does not smear how hard they are willing to work. These dragons are solid and long-lasting during Threadfall as well as flexible in ways the jades and bronzes simply cannot be due to their greater size. Happy with being adaptable and practical, browns and their riders are often wingseconds--though it is not underheard of to have wingleader or even Weyrleader brownriders. Browns are the 'workhorses', a versatile medium-sized dragon a Weyr can depend on through thick and thin. They chase after any female who Rises.
Brownrider Players: Average to casual activity on site, with a reliable to average thread-posting record. Brown dragons provide opportunities for less demanding positions and roleplay. Appearing in threads that broadly impact the Weyr is optional unless the brownrider is in a ranking position where it is expected. May also begin celebratory feasts. Brownriders can win queenflights and will be made Weyrleader as a result, increasing expected responsibility. Weyrleaders help manage the everyday activities that help the Weyr thrive, and they lead the fighting wings against Thread. Brownriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk, though less so than higher colors, and are allowed a little more social freedom.

Body:
C: U: R:
Fluorite Female 3rd Highest-Ranking Female Chromatic 40-50 feet long Impress to: Any gender equally
Fluorites are stockier and stronger than their origin color, providing them greater endurance in the air, though they are just as eager. These dilute, erythristic dragons are female mutations of blue dragons originally hatched from hematite clutches. They are sterile, and are instead valuable fighters of Thread. Though they are not egglayers, they still Rise once or twice a Turn. If a Jasper or Jade wins a Hematite flight, there will be more fluorites than blues at hatching.
Fluorites are extroverted, energetic and thriving among a team of their own fellows, strangers or not. They are markedly chatty with either human or dragon, though not without grace and tact, with slightly better memory than blues themselves. Athletically-driven, their only demand is exercise, preferring flight training over a day of lounging.
Fluoriterider Players: Average activity on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Fluorite dragons provide opportunities for less demanding positions and roleplay. Fluorites can become Searchdragons. Appearing in threads that broadly impact the Weyr is optional unless the fluoriterider is in a ranking position where it is expected. Fluoriteriders are not usually expected at important meets with other Weyr representatives or Holdfolk. Playing with a fluorite is more flexible than playing with a higher-ranking female, and as a fluoriterider your responsibilities are as light or as much as you want to handle.

Body:
C: U: R:
Blue Male 5th Highest-Ranking Male Chromatic 35-45 feet long Impress to: Any gender, slightly more often to men
Carefree and optimistic, blue dragons leave a good impression wherever they go, even if they themselves can't neccessarily remember it. Forgetful, maybe not quite as mentally reliable as other larger males, but no less loyal. These dragons love to burn Thread, love to socialize, and can be welcoming towards others. If common travelers think of dragons, they will usually recall blues first, as it would certainly have been a blue that introduced themselves. They are an exciteable kind of dragon that cares not that they are only wingriders, only that they are fulfilling their purpose, helping their allies defend Pern from Thread. Blues will chase fluorites, greens, and female-leaning sulfurs. Both blues and greens make up a majority of a Weyr's dragon population.
Bluerider Players: Casual activity on site, with a casual thread-posting record. Blue dragons provide opportunities for roleplay when you have casual availability. Appearing in threads that broadly impact the Weyr is optional unless the bluerider is in a ranking position where it is expected. Blueriders are rarely expected at important meets with other Weyr representatives or Holdfolk. Blueriders and their dragons cannot become Weyrleader and are rarely wingleaders. Blues make excellent Searchdragons. Blueriders, your responsibilities are as light or as much as you want to handle.

Body:
C: U: R:
Green Female 4th Highest-Ranking Female Chromatic 30-40 feet long Impress to: Any gender equally
The smallest female dragons are also the most spirited. Greens are the sort to forget their actual size as they desperately attempt to get closer to you for better cuddles. Bubbly personalities and bursting with energy, green dragons are always 'ready to go' for any reason. Green dragons are sterile and do not lay eggs, not to be burdened by the boring life of a clutchmother. They are happiest in flight, fighting Thread or flirting with other dragons, Rising up to three times a Turn. Green dragons are often good with people, fine fighters when they are needed, but their limited memories prevents them from being trusted with few tasks other than their Threadfall training. Both blues and greens make up a majority of a Weyr's dragon population.
Greenrider Players: Casual activity on site, with a casual thread-posting record. Green dragons provide opportunities for roleplay when you have casual availability. Appearing in threads that broadly impact the Weyr is optional unless the greenrider is in a ranking position where it is expected. Greenriders are rarely expected at important meets with other Weyr representatives or Holdfolk. Greenriders will not be wingleaders. Greens make excellent Searchdragons. Greenriders, your responsibilities are as light or as much as you want to handle.

Body:
C: U: R:
Sulfur Intersex Lowest-Ranking Dragon Chromatic 25-35 feet long Impress to: Any gender equally
Sulfurs, xanthic mutations that were once greens, are born only as sets of twins from the same egg. Sulfur dragons continue to communicate with their sibling regularly long after Impression with their own riders, keeping a close relationship with their twin. They possess both sets of reproductive organs and take on the pronouns and sexual preferences of the rider they Impress to. Depending on this, female-leaning sulfurs can either rise up to three times a Turn, or male-leaning will chase chromatic female dragons. Sulfurs are curious to a fault, gabby, and restless thrillseekers, making the life of a sulferrider an exhausting, demanding one.
Sulfurs can barely keep focus on their tasks and rarely remember more than their rider or their sibling's name, and they require a determined, patient mind willing to reel them in time and again. Sulfurs make new friends as easily and as quickly as they forget them, amiable but simple-minded. Like hounds put before a tunnelsnake--sulfurs flame Thread, daydream of Thread, and train for Threadfall with the same manic, hungering intensity. While unable to endure a full Threadfall, sulfurs can belch impressive blankets of flame and due to their lightweight are extremely fast, agile fliers. Tiny but fearless, it could be said sulfurs enjoy 'hunting' Thread more than any safer, leisure day-to-day activity.
Sulfurrider Players: Expected to be highly active on site, with a reliable thread-posting record. Sulfurriders cannot become Weyrleader nor will they ever be wingleaders. Sulfurriders are representatives of one's Weyr during important meets with other Weyrs or Holdfolk and appearances may be requested. Sulfur players are expected to post during Threadfall events and interact with or regularly acknowledge their sulfur's twin. Sulfurriders may also be called upon to scout territories, though their dragons do not have the capacity to Search. Sulfurs are very rare dragons and are a large responsibility.
A note on dragon genetics and inbreeding: Pern dragons possess triple-stranded DNA, which does not suffer the degradation that would be typical of inbreeding in two-stranded DNA. Thus, dragon instincts don't make distinctions on close relatives when it comes to making the next clutch. This also provides us with the freedom to choose any dragon we want to win mating flights without running into the problem of not having enough choice in dragon mates.

The Reign of a Queen Dragon {Site Canon & Character Risks}
The Golds and Hematites of a Weyr are its reigning 'queens' -- the highest authority right beside their weyrwomen or hematite weyrmen. The phrase "A dragon knows best" is treated as law to this site's Pern. A queen dragon's approval and disapproval of people, places, things, and events are to be respected over all other opinions. To slight a queen is punishable. Any offending actions will be canonically gossiped and viewed with disgust among the weyrfolk.
When a player risks interaction with a queen, a person or candidate that offends a queen could have any or all of these consequences:
- # of months added unpaid labor
- A tax extracted from their marks, paid to the Weyr
- Sent as assigned assistant to a bluescout for # of months
- Grounded from all flight for # of months, including chasing in next queenflight or chasing for weyrleadership. (for dragonriders)
~Sneaking Onto the Sands When a Clutch is Laid~
A brooding queen does not leave her eggs until they hatch and all the babies have bonded. Characters (especially candidates) cannot 'sneak onto the sands' either to touch or admire eggs, even when the brooding queen is assumed asleep, without permission from:
- The player of the brooding queen
- The Staff
Even with permissions, the player is accepting punishment for their character, as they will be caught by the queen. CRW lost a queen egg to thieves in the night in our site's history, and our brooding queens are especially paranoid and sensitive because of this. Punishment for sneaking onto the sands can be severe, due to the potential that the character could have brought harm to the eggs.
- Candidates will be banned from the current or upcoming hatching.
- Candidates will be assigned to care for the brooding queen under the watch of her rider, replacing all 'free hour' slots. The candidate will be forbidden from recreational socializing. Anyone caught socializing with them risks sharing their punishments in full.
- Only through caring for the queen and apologizing will restore the candidate's standing with the queen and their superiors. This is an RP Requirement with the player of the brooding queen, to be placed in the Hatching Sands and subtitled:
<Character's Name> service to <Dragon's Name>
The brooding queen's player will respond with accepting the apology ICly. By not at least starting the thread, as we understand sometimes queen players must take LOAs, you accept your character is being viewed as unrepentant, uncooperative, and the character is banned from any upcoming Hatching.
~A Queen's Commands~
This site does not support queen dragons bending the willpower of other lesser colors to follow her orders. We understand this is other sites' canon, but it is not forced here. The only time this is allowed:
- Site Plot Reasons
- It is part of a Skill or Talent
- Permission from Staff is granted
- Permission from all players it would effect is granted
IC, as a player with a lesser-ranked dragon, you are certainly permitted to obey the mental influences of the queen if you so choose.
_______________
Flaming Hematites {Site Canon Views on Hematite Queens Chewing Firestone}
Hematites, at the request of the Weyrleader (OOCly: Staff), will either be assigned to egg-laying or chewing firestone. The hematite, upon maturity, is told what it means if it is requested it chews firestone, and from there the hematite decides if it will fly Thread or brood the next generation. IC, we do not allow forced sterilization -- at any Weyr, anywhere, for dragons (or Pernfolk). If a hematite is hatched on-site and is destined for flaming, IC she will be okay with the concept. There will be no drama, no inner monologue of torture to the character. A dragon will not care too deeply about whether it breathes fire against Thread or makes eggs, it will be happy with either choice. If a Weyrleader in a Weyr wanted a hematite to flame and she refused, it is to be assumed it was never forced. "A dragon knows best", even if the people disagree.
We do not support the idea of forced sterilization on this site or RPing the idea of it, at all. This is not a stance the Staff will ever budge on.
A Flaming Hematite is still every bit a queen, even if their human is only a wingrider. Their demands and opinions hold weight in place of their rider in this case. A Flaming Queen will still be respected as one. If she feels strongly about something, Senior and Junior queens will listen.
