Chapter 1

One sunny day, I was practicing my fishing on the beach. I was only nine but I was pretty good at swimming and fishing. I had just finished making a spear out of wood I had found. I decided to take a break and sit down on the beach. I looked out into the water and at that time I herd a piercing scream. I dropped the spear and swam as fast as I could to get who ever was screaming.

It was a girl who appeared to be just a little younger than me. I realized she was drowning. I grabbed her hand and pulled her to shore. I didn't know her at all, but somehow I felt as if I did. I felt like I new her well. I sat her in my lap, because it was cold. The water was the coldest it had been all year. I tried to calm her down by telling her she was okay now.

She had dark brown hair, dark green eyes, and somewhat pail skin. That was not that common in district four. She was shivering, shaking, and anything else that signaled she was cold. I was trying to get her warm but it wasn't working. She was in shock. I wonder why she doesn’t know how to swim.

I eventually get her to stop shivering and she tells me her name. Annie Cresta. After she told me hers I felt obligated to tell her mine.

"My name is Finn-ick Odair," I stuttered because I was nervous. I guess.
"Thank you for saving me. You saved my life."

We talked for hours, getting to know each other. I have never felt so safe around any one in my entire life. I knew that I could tell her anything. When it started to get dark, she decided that she better get home. She said he mom would be upset.

I got up and walked her home. When she got to her door I said goodbye and we made plans to meet tomorrow. I walked to my own home and the first thing I saw was my mother waiting for me.
"Finnick! Where have you been! I was worried...."
"Mom, I'm fine,” I say.
My mother is someone I would do anything to protect. She teaches me so much, she taught me humanity. She taught me to be strong, humble, and to care for my loved ones. Whenever she would say some thing like "if I'm not here when you grow up..." I stop her because I can't imagine it.

My family and I sit down to dinner. Next to me are my brothers Kalub and Liam. They are twins, both ten. Across from me is my oldest brother Joey who has just turned twelve. Next to him is my little sister Emily, she is six. My father is sitting next to my mother. My brothers are all like mentors to me, especially Joey. Since I'm the youngest of the boys, I look up to them and Emily looks up to us.

While we are eating my mother says,
"Now, remember Finnick, the beach is really nice but, every once and a while one those creatures comes out of the woods and gets onto the beach. You wouldn't want to get attacked by one, those things will rip you in half," she says under her breath.

My parent’s room is small but my mother has taken the time to make it look beautiful. It looks like it could be like the ones from the Victor’s Village. Although those are so much more expensive and decorated, I guess I’m trying to say perfect. This looks like a real place, Not something machine made, but homemade. Liam and Kalub share a room and Joey and I have split the room we were supposed to share into two by drying out driftwood and nailing it together to make a wall. On the side there is an opining so he can easily get to his room. I still walk over there at night to tell him everything that's on my mind.

"I met a girl today," I say.
"Ya kiss her?"
"No, I'm meeting her tomorrow though. I don't plan on kissing her then either." We both laugh.
"That's good. Where are you meeting?"
"The beach."
"To swim or something?"
"She doesn't know how. I think I'll teach her"
"That's a good idea- shhh I think mom's coming! Go to bed!" he whispers

I walk on my tiptoes to my bed and get under my covers and sure enough my mother comes in and tucks me and Joey in. She kisses us both on the forehead and walks out.

In the morning I wake up and change my cloths. Once I'm ready, I head to the beach. I see her siting in the sand. She looks up at me and says
"Hey Finn."
"Hey Annie, can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"You have lived in District Four your entire life, and never learned how to swim?"
"Well, I’ve always been afraid. And-well-no one will teach me."
"I'll teach you," I say excitedly.
"Alright!"
We walk in the water while I support her. I tell her to move her legs in an up and down motion.
"There! You’re doing it!"
"Wow, I never imagined swimming could be so peaceful."
"Well you’re actually floating. You've got as much skill as a piece of driftwood." I say in a light tone
"We’ll need to continue these lessons if you want to get to the next level." i say
"So what's the next level?"
"Dead fish."
"Well, then we better do it three days a week."
"I think you will need five days a week," I say. we both laugh.

Within the next month, Annie and I become inseparable. We tell each other every thing and keep no secrets from each other. She has become my best friend. We go to the beach every day and I give her a swimming lesson. Then we sit and talk. Over time, Annie becomes an excellent swimmer just like me. We laugh all the time. It's so great being with her. One of the times we meet she says, "you know, i feel like i have seen your eyes before.i just dont know where."

We splashed around in the water having a blast until her mom came to call her home. She stood her distance from us and never said hello and I wondered if she didn't like me.

A few weeks later Annie came to the beach crying.

"What's wrong," I ask.
"I can't come to the beach tomorrow."
"What? Why?"
"I just can't. My mother won't let me, she says I can't be seen with you."

Before I can ask why she ran away. I sat on the beach all night, more miserable than ever. All I wanted was to talk to her. I didn't know I was crying until I felt the tears drip down my face. I looked in my hand and saw a small shell I had found . i was going to give it to her. All night I stayed in that same spot and thought about her. In the morning I walked back to my house to get ready for school. My brothers and sister, and I walked to school. my mother was upset i didnt come home last night. she said she was worried sick about me.

About a week passed. I was miserable. The spot next to me in class was empty, the spot next to me at lunch was empty, and the spot in my heart was empty. I decided I couldn't take any more so I went up to her at lunch.

"Annie, you don't have to answer, just listen."
Before I can finish she wraps her arms around me, and lets me finish.
"I'm sorry if I did anything wrong."
"You did nothing. I'm sorry I left you on the beach like that. I'll never do it again. I’ve missed you."
"I missed you too," I hug her tightly and ask, "Can you come to the beach after school?"
"No, my mother says that I can't be seen with you. I don’t know why."
"Should I talk to her?"
"That would be great, maybe you'll change her mind," she says.

Now that i look back, we were so damn naive. We had almost no idea what the capital really held against us. She was more shut eyed than i was though, because i had a bigger family filled with kids who were older. there was a constant fear of the games. This also made me so mature for my age, annie was mature because she lost her dad at a young age.we meshed well.

We walk home that day but instead of me walking her to her house, she walks me to mine so her mom doesn't see us.
"Finn, the Reaping is coming up" she says worried about Joey. Although she doesnt know him, she knows he's my brother and that it would kill me if he was picked.
"Everything will be okay. He won't get picked," I say.

We get to my house and I immediately hug her goodbye then go to my room and think about what I'm going to say to her mother tomorrow. I mean, I have no idea what so ever. All I know is tomorrow I am going to talk to Annie's mother.

I sleep soundly that night, knowing I have Annie back. I don't know what I would have done if I could never see her smile at me again. In the morning I wake up, freshen up, and tell Joey I'm going to Annie's house.

I get there and knock on the door. Annie answers. She invites me in and he mother says, "hello."
"Hello, Mrs. Cresta.”
She asked Annie to leave the room so she can speak to me privately. Annie looks at me but I nod to tell her that I’ll be okay.
"I would never do Annie any harm, ever.''
''You taught her how to swim, that was my job. I haven't heard nice things about you Mr. Odair.'' It was like she kept inventing reasons.
''Annie was drowning that’s how I met her. I heard her screaming, so I swam out to get her. I don't know what you've heard but Annie is my best friend, I couldn’t imagine life without her."
''Well Finnick, Annie's father was actually supposed to teach her, but when he died, I never went in the water again, I didn't want Annie to swim. It reminded me too much of her father,'' her tone was softer. I could almost hear the pain in her voice, it gets hostel again as she says,
''Annie is mine. She is not to be prancing around with a boy like you.''
Feeling anger rise inside me, I stand. The only thing stopping me from walking out is Annie
"What do you mean? I'm no different from anyone else in Annie's grade. I will do anything to protect her. I’m so very sorry about your husband, but I don't see the reason behind Annie not being allowed to see me.''
''Your eyes, they are just like his,” she almost begins to sob when I look around the corner and see Annie looking at us. Mrs. Cresta is on the verge of tears, so I calm my voice and say, "I'm sorry, I just really care about her and I don't know what I’d do without her,''
''Okay, I can see how much you care about her. I'm going away on a commission for the Capitol and I'm going to be gone a while, maybe a month. You can see Annie, protect her. She needs someone to protect her.'' I am dumbfounded; I don't know what to say. She changed her mind fast. I wait a minute to see if she was joking.
She wasn't so I say, ''thank you, if I may ask what are you going to the Capitol for, Mrs. Cresta?''
''That I believe, Finnick is none of your business '' I’m so happy I say thank you to Mrs. Cresta and go get Annie.

Annie and I go to my house to meet my parents and as we walk she asks about them. I explain my mother as frail, loving, and secure and my father as kind, tough, and serious. We get to my house, walk in, and find my mother on the couch and my dad is putting my little sister to bed. I introduce Annie to my mother first and she smiles and hugs Annie. I can tell they like each other right away. My father walks out and swings his arm around me and I introduce Annie. They also hit it off right away. Annie is usually quiet but she came out of her shell with my family. In about an hour we go to the beach and sit on a blanket and talk about the day.

We’ve been swimming for a while when she says, "Finn, I know your birthday isn't for another two weeks, but I can't wait to give you this."

What happens next is absolutely amazing. She goes behind a tree and pulls out a silver trident. I am speechless.
''Thank you Annie! I love it!!'' I run up to her and give her a hug.

‘’I’ve been saving for it since the beginning of the month. I couldn't wait any longer to give it to you. Happy birthday Finn.”

That’s when we heard it- a piercing scream coming from the direction of my house. We look at each other and run, with my new trident in hand. Arriving at my house, we notice the scream belonged to my mother.

NOTE: if you are wondering why annies mom gave up so fast, keep reading. in an upcoming chapter, there is a major surprise!

So much better!

A few notes for future chapters:
-Try to keep the timing better with chapters and not spread out so much.
-Try to start sentences out with different words and try to stay away from starting sentences with "I" "She" and "He" over and over again.

Chapter 2

The screams that Annie and I herd on the beach, were my mother’s. Annie and I get there and see her on the floor, blood everywhere. Emily is crying trying to wake her. I rush down to my knees to try and wake her too, but inside I knew it was too late. Annie disappears. I start to worry but then I see her leading my petrified family up the basement stairs through the kitchen. She blocks my mother, Emily, and myself from their view. Joey catches a glimpse and knocks Annie to the floor. She rushes to his knees the way I did and starts balling. My dad drops on the floor in shock.

I pick up Emily off the floor and help Annie off the ground. The remainder of my family sits around her. Almost like we are waiting for her to be okay. The only noise I hear is our whimpers. I finally break the quiet by asking, ''what happened?''

Liam says, ''someone broke in. He threw dad in the basement. We didn’t know we left Emily or mom behind. We followed dad trying to get out. We all got locked in, then we herd her scream...'' he trails off.

Kalub finishes, ''we were trying to get out... then Annie came and found us.''

I look at Annie and can tell she's hurt, but she wont saying anything. I scoot over and whisper, ''what hurts, Annie?'' She just shakes her head because she knows I’m hurting. We always know somehow.

Emily, who is an amazing artist, draws a picture of the man that took my mother. My father looks and bursts into tears.

“Dad, I know that this is hard for you. It's hard for all of us. You need to tell us what happened. Tell me who he is," says Joey.

"He and I-went to school with your mother. We got in a huge fight over her. She always wanted me-not him, he went- somewhat insane. He came to visit your mother; he saw she was still with me, and happy," he puts his head in his hands. My mother and father’s love was what I wanted someday.

"Then, it all went bad. We got into a heated argument. Then, this happened the next day," by the time he is done, we are all crying. It's unreal that she's gone. I don't want to believe it.

I stop crying because I know that I will be the one that needs to be strong. I hug Annie but remember she is hurt so let her go. She pulls me back and hugs me. We sit there at the table for an hour or two. Then Annie helps Emily to bed. Kalub and Liam fall asleep there with Emily, for fear of losing her. I walk my father to his room, but one look at my mother’s side of the bed, and he is back into hysteria. I put him in my bed and walk out. I don't know if he fell asleep or not, but I like to think he did. I over hear Joey on the phone with a Peacekeeper. He is telling them what happened so they can hang the man that did this. He stands there by my mother and closes his eyes. Once the head Peacekeeper comes I help Joey explain everything to him. He says he will send a team to find him.

"Good luck tomorrow," says the Peacekeeper. It takes a minute for me to realize what he means but then I get it. The Reaping.

Joey goes to bed. I know things won't be the same. They will get better but never the same. Annie walks out of Emily's room and I ask her again what hurts. This time she tells me because she knows I won't stop asking. Her hip and left arm are bothering her. I go in the bathroom a set a sling cloth for her arm. She sits on the couch and I lift her shirt gently in the back and see her entire left side is completely black and blue.

"Everything will be all right Annie," I get ice from the kitchen and lay her down. I pull a blanket over her and sit on the chair across from her.

I wait until she falls asleep to cry. I keep my eyes closed that way I don't make noise. After a minute or two, I feel warm hands on my shoulders. I look back and its Annie. She gives me a tight hug and then she grabs my hand to sit me on the couch, and she covers me and goes on the chair I was on. I wanted her to be on the couch so she wouldn't have to put as much pressure on her hip. But she insisted that I stay there. I eventually fall asleep but not for long. By the time we fell asleep it was about five or six in the morning. The Reaping is at two, so we have to wake up at around twelve, if we can.

Just turning twelve, Joey is the only one that is eligible right now. When I wake up, I find Annie making breakfast in the kitchen. I decide to check on my dad. I slowly open the door and find him sitting in my bed still awake. I sit next to him and he doesn't even move. I try to talk to him about the Reaping but he just sits there. I keep trying, but he doesn't respond.

When he finally looks at me he says, ''I don't know how to go on Finnick.''

''It’s hard for me too. She would want us to-go on.''

''I guess your right. Put on your nice clothes Finnick. I can help Emily,'' he walks out of my room and I change into a button down shirt and black dress pants. I walk into the kitchen and see Emily at the table. She is dressed in a little white dress that no doubt my mother picked out.

No one talks all morning. We are all dressed in nice clothes and we eat breakfast that helped Annie make. I am the one that tells my family that we have to go. Really, none of us have to go except Joey. But we go just in case. We walk to the Reaping in silence. Annie looks at me and wraps her arms around me. This makes me feel a lot better than I did. I don't know why.

Joey checks in and we all stand back with all the parents and children that are too young to be picked. The district four escort walks up on stage, Lavinia, her dark blue hair in curls. The people from The Capital have always made me sick. They know nothing of love and nothing of care. Her skin bleached bright white and her dress is a lighter colored version of her dress. She reads a speech that everyone couldn't care less about and then puts on a tape. A tape sent ''all the way fro, the Capital.” It explains the war that landed us here, but from the Capital’s point of view.

''Oh, I love that video! Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor,'' Lavinia says happily.

''Ladies first,'' she reaches her hand in the glass bowl that contains the name of the unlucky girl who will most likely die.

''Callie York,'' a young girl walks up on stage slowly and shaking. She looks about fifteen, not very big.

''Now its time to choose the male tribute, Daren Jugen,'' he can only be thirteen at the most. He has barley any chance. I'm glad it's not Joey but at the same time I feel bad for the boy who was chosen.

Annie and I decide that we want to go to the beach. We tell my dad we are going and before he can answer a Peacekeeper stops him and says they found the man who killed my mother. They are going to hang him tonight. My dad’s lifeless eyes look to his feet. He nods and the Peacekeeper continues walking and controlling the flow of people. We walk to the beach and sit in the sand.

''How is your hip,'' I ask.

''Better. Hey look Finn, don't worry about me. I mean, you just lost your mom and watched it happen. I am worried about you.”

''I miss her already.”

''You will always miss her Finn. The important thing is that you know she is in a better place, watching over you,'' I smile a little because I know its true. That made me fell a little better.

''Swim with me,'' I ask her.

''For sure, lets go!''

We walk in the water and play. We splash around and then get out to dry off. I try to fish a little so my family can have some dinner. Once we are dry we walk back. She reminds me I start career training soon. In my district, we start when we are ten. Because Annie is a year younger than me, she wont start for another year.

''we will go to the square, watch... umm. then eat dinner with your family.'' she says referring to watching the man who killed my mom be hung

''Ok, it still feels unreal. That she is really gone.''

''I'Il help you through it. Thats a promise'' she says.

We get to my house and try to get my family ready to go. We all walk down to the square. We see a man on the hanging post looking at us. I look at Joey who is holding Emily. Her head is dug into his chest and she is crying. He strokes her hair and whispers something in her ear. We all get close to each other and close our eyes, well at least I do. When I open them he is dead.

We get home and turn on the TV. We see twenty-four children dressed in barley anything. Joey put Emily to bed and fell asleep with her. Liam and Kalub could not take any more of the chariot rides so they go to bed. My father goes in my bed so he doesn’t get reminded of her again. Annie is already asleep so I pick her up ever so carefully and bring her in my mother and father’s room. I pull the blankets over her and make myself comfortable on the couch.

''Are you up for the beach,'' she asked in the morning.

''Yeah, we need to leave a note,'' we make sure that we put it in a place that they will find it and make our way the beach.

''Thank you for carrying me to bed last night,'' she says.

''Annie, it was the least I could do for all you have done for my family and I. You are all I could ask for.''

Very good Sam! And Haylie!

That family has some bad luck for sure. But, when writing try to portray a bit more of the youngness in your characters. Other than that, good job :)
