Ghost in the Gates

Ciel Phantomhive
the main character, he is an odd 12 year old boy at the start with an eyepatch, by the time Aizen is confronted for the final time he has more than turned 13. He is unusually keen eyed, incurably cynical and easy to annoy. Ciel is a tactical genius, which would make him valuable to the gatekeepers, but his age keeps him out of battle directly. He has arrogance and pride that vaguely reminded Gwen of ZP when she'd been shrunk during the incident at Canyon 1. Ciel often acts as the enemy side during tactical simulator games intended to allow gatekeepers to form a tactical plan against an enemy. He hates sitting on the sidelines however, and occasionally gets into trouble.

Ciel has been assigned as Aston's apprentice, but Gwen is responsible for his personal welfare and his supervisor on any diplomatic or recruiting mission he may be assigned to. Ciel is constantly nagging Aston to let him fight. Wary around shinigami at first, he softened up when he realized that nobody was preaching to him about his contract with Sebastian being a mistake.

Ciel is an extremely vengeful person, and not adverse to encouraging the trait in others even if its by acting as a support player. He has been chosen as 1 of 2 savants of Set. Set's excuse for choosing two was that Ciel and Sebastian's souls were so tihgtly intertwined due to their contract that he couldn't tell which of the two of them were his proper savant and more importantly, which of them may possibly be a deathkeeper candidate. Deciding which one it is is very important for Ciel and Sebastian's safety, due to the risks involved in the process. Firstly someone not intended to enter the time stream could potentially drown there or go insane. Secondly, there's always the chance that the current Deathkeeper could reject one of them when they arrive there in which case all of Set's scheming could still be unable to prevent Ciel and Sebastian from being driven apart. The other Egyptian Gods repeatedly berate Set for his recklessness.

Ciel's philosophy is, no matter how dark the hole, even if there is only a spider's thread, he will grasp it and climb out. Sebastian frequently describes his soul as giving out an incredibly enticing aroma when his vengeful nature comes out in the open. Other times, he has described Ciel's soul as "thriving in darkness, but untouched by it."

His endurance and fortitude, and ability to sit on his revenge for weeks or even years before he carries it out is the reason why Set chose him and Sebastian together. Ciel is a passionate and patient game player, and enjoys any game based summoning system put before him. However, his favorite game is Chess. He views his servants as pawns, but for all of that he takes care of them. Though he has always considered Sebastian not his pawn but his knight. He crowns Gwen his "bishop", Aston as his "rook" and Gideon as his "queen."

Sebastian
Sebastian has a singular obsession with Ciel. He always has. Ciel gave him meaning, amusement, curiousity, and quiet albeit dominating cameraderie. He trusts Ciel's orders implicitly, and has on occasion predicted his master's moves in advance. Sebastian will use every ounce of skill he has to execute his master's orders perfectly, trusting always that Ciel will direct him appropriately. It is the determined, tenacious, vengeful Ciel that has captured his obsessive nature, and he has shown far less interest when his young master starts to waver.

Sebastian is quiet, his eyes, and his smile, betray almost everything on his mind. When he feels the need to talk, a quiet, lilting brittish accent is what greets the ears. Sebastian doesn't need to consume human food, his species however, gains great pleasure from it. Sebastian is fond of making sweet cakes and tea and doting on Ciel almost as much as a father or older brother would. He teaches the arts and matters of history and mathematics in which he has knowledge to his charge.

After he and Ciel were assigned to Aston as his apprentices, Sebastian, while not interested in the married or coupled life himself, does his best to support Aston when matters keep him away from Ororo, everything from assisting the woman with her share of the paperwork at Xavier's school to cooking for her and Evan when Aston is gone. He goes out of his way to set up romantic dates for them, some of them very expensive and tasteful, when they are together. He's shown himself a man of many talents, and has set an evasion record in the danger room not matched by any student at Xavier's school. However, when there he sits back and lets the Xmen be, well, Xmen most of the time.

As a member of DSI, he is very adept at searching written records but not adept at using a computer. He is capable of whipping up a 4 star dinner for twenty in two hours and puts this talent to work maintaining DSI's kitchen and supplies and making sure those officers there are fed. He looks at Gwen both as a superior and a sort of oddball spirit cousin, and was amused immensly by her attempts to make peace between him and longtime rival Grell. He seems to read her moods even without trying, though given her demeanor this isn't a hard feat, however, his responses when she's in a bad mood are completely silent.

Sebastian distinguishes himself frequently by leaving small comforting gifts in DSI crash pads and safe houses for whomever is using them from rare and unusually strong teas to specially prepared home remedies and once he left a three layer black forest cake in the refrigerator of Aston's crash pad, all without Aston seeing him or even twitching in his sleep.

On forays, Sebastian leaves Ciel in Gwen, Jazra, or Gideon's care. At first he resisted them teaching Ciel self defense. But when Gwen pointed out several close calls Sebastian had had regarding Ciel's safety prior to their being tapped he relented. His chosen role is that of silent, supportive pawn, silently keeping watch on his superiors and equals.

Grell Suttcliff
Erotimanic, sadosmasochistic, sociopathic, hystrionic, boarderline, these are all diagnosis Huang and Gideon have considered when analyzing Grell's personality. While he is a man, Grell has the emotional makeup of an emotionally unstable female stalker. He bows to very few people, and to him pain is a gesture of love.

Gwen will go to bat for Grell only if she's sure he won't find out she did it or if she wants to rub in his face how his hysterics will be his undoing one day. For Grell, to whom pain is a sign of affection, the worst thing Gwen could do is not inflict pain. Fending off his repeated ambushes (usually stopped in their tracks by his restraints), Gwen has had plenty of practice learning non painful restraining holds.

Grell is more or less indentured to Diana as punishment for taking up the title "Jack the Ripper" co owned with Ciel's deceased Aunt Madam Red, whom he slew when she refused to kill Ciel. Jurisdiction was later ceded over to Athena when Grell took a shine to her. Athena is trying to mold him into a defender and protector, but old habits are very hard to break. Grell relishes blood and violence, and Gwen attempts to oblige him by giving him tough opponents, tough hollows mainly. However she hesitates to give him Shadow related jobs because she doesn't want him accidentally killing someone by destroying their shadow. However, what she gives him he's very good at killing.
