The room was fairly quiet, only the faintest sounds of pages being turned and the occasional sound of steps could be heard. Sunlight poured through several windows high on the walls, revealing the faintest hint of dust in the air as they passed through. The many rows of shelves cut the room like a maze, leaving several open areas with tables. The air smelled slightly musty from the countless volumes of books packed like sardines in the shelves. There were several ladders on small rails in front of each shelf to reach the upper rows, the bright glint of the metal catching the light unlike most everything else in the large room. So many books, so many subjects, so much knowledge accumulated in a single place. The Hidden Valley Library. The resource for all the young ninja of the village, and Shiro's next stop on his day of training. He'd returned to his father's clinic earlier and delivered the herbs before heading home and leaving most of his equipment, only having his equipment pouch with a single kunai inside just in case of an emerency. His father had been busy with a patient so Shiro hadn't gotten to see him, which was kind of a let-down but not anything for him to get sad about. Walking through the entrance, he gave a short smile and wave to the elder lady behind the front desk. He'd been here numerous times before while at the academy, usually studying in the quiet or as the occasional hiding spot from the aggressive kids from his class. Most of them wouldn't be caught dead in a library, so they wouldn't bother to look there. Shiro usually found himself reading up on various and unrelated subjects during his academy years, but now he had a real focus. His body was still fairly tired from his training in the woods. Now it was time for some learning. He already knew what it was he was looking for and what shelf it should be on, so finding it shouldn't be too difficult. He made his way past the rows of shelves until he found his way to the proper section. 'Standard Genjutsu' This section had numerous books by different authors on the basics of genjutsu. The explanation and direct information involved could be rather confusing at times, so beginners would usually have to read from several different authors to really grasp it. Shiro remembered when he was forced to go through the same to even understand how genjutsu worked. Thankfully, his mother had helped him with some of the basics and now it was one of his strengths. He had learned a few techniques to aid in his 'running and hiding' skills, but he lacked one of the most basic skills... Walking down the aisle, he looked over at the titles of the books. He was looking for something his mother had mentioned he should look into as a basic and powerful skill he would need if he would be sent out on missions. A particular book caught his eye; it had a dark blue binding on the spine with the title written vertically down the side. 'Genjutsu Defense' He removed the book from the shelf to reveal its equally blue front and back covers. He carried the book over to an empty table and got himself settled. Setting the book out in front of him, he began to read through the opening pages. |

My friends call me Galileo or "Gal" for short.
|
Name: Sabaku, Yuudai Gender: Male Age: 12 Clan: Sabaku Village: Village of Mirages Personality: Yuudai is quite amicable and gregarious – enjoying the company of others. He enjoys listening to jokes as well as attempting to make them. Whilst enjoying fun and entertainment, he knows times when not to be. This usually grants him the respect of those he meets and befriends. It will be difficult for you to find Yuudai when he is visibly angry and downtrodden because he hides his emotions so well that it is impossible for anyone to know how he really feels – well it really depends. More will be described later. That joyful smile could be false and could be hiding hurtful secrets deep within his soul. Yuudai tries to not let anyone get to him – whether it be words or actions. He doesn’t really enjoy fighting or conflicts with others because according to him, “I’m a lover – not a fighter, love not war.” Of course he would say this in a slightly jokingly tone, but it still holds true to who he is. But in serious combat, sometimes he tries to lighten the mood with his antics and that – more often than not – gets him in trouble and sticky situations. Yuudai’s other side is a completely different persona. It is of one that appears every now and then within the Sabaku bloodline – and that is an unsatiable desire for blood and battle. Traumatic and desperate events tend to trigger this side of Yuudai, causing him to become a battle-hungry beast. His eyes become filled with lustful anger that won’t cease until he gets what he wants. He will often say pretty damn creepy things while in this state and crack his neck repeatedly. In battle, Yuudai will not hesitate to play dirty in order to accomplish his goal – which most of the time would be to utterly massacre whoever he is fighting. Even with this overbearing curse, it can be seen as a blessing…at least a tiny bit. Even though, his mind is chaotic and not right at this time, Yuudai will not hesistate to kill – making him a merciless fighter. When he’s sparring this probably wouldn’t be the desired result, but it could happen. There are few things that can calm him while in this state. Someone who is close to him and attempt to speak with him, in hopes of connecting with the “true” Yuudai inside. Another, and much less diplomatic, way is to utterly demolish him in combat. Appearance: Yuudai stands at a meager height of 5 feet and 2 inches with a pair of searing emerald green eyes. This is quite different from the average Sabaku bloodline person, seeing as their eyes tend to be darker in color. His eyes however go well with his raven-black hair which also contain small undertones of red. His hair is longer in the front than it is in the back. The hair in the front go just beneath his eyes and in the back, it is only a couple of inches long. Yuudai’s eyes are the true windows into his soul and spirit. Some people, if they really wanted to, can tell by just looking into these dazzling orbs what his mood is. What his eyes reflect may not be constant with the rest of his expression, but that doesn't change the fact that he feels a certain way. Yuudai tries to hide his eyes in most case because they are the only things that will give one some insight into his true self. His build is pretty slender, yet athletic. All of his days of traveling the endless deserts on his own in search for a purpose have forced him to become strong. Also, because of the trials of the sands, he has various permanent scars that refused to disappear. These serve as a constant reminder that he needs to be independent and strong to survive. Yuudai wears bleak colors of tan, off-whites, blacks, browns, and the like in his attire. They are your typical clothes that desert nomads would wear seeing as how the young shinobi-in-training is no different. Many would describe his clothing as tattered rags just thrown together into some odd ensemble, but he doesn’t care. These clothes also serve as a reminder that he is of the Sabaku bloodline – masters of the sands. Money: 100 Yen Personal Status Rank: Student Chakra: 50 Mental: Charisma: 3 Intellect: 9 Will-Power: 5 Physical: Strength: 3 Stamina: 5 Agility: 3 Skills: Ninjutsu: 5 Genjutsu: 5 Taijutsu: 0 Summoning: 0 Sealing: 9 Medical Practice: 0 Weapon Practice: Sword Skill: 0 Axe/Hammer Skill: 0 Fan Skill: 0 Pole-arm Skill: 0 Instrument Skill: 0 Armor Skill: 0 Shield Skill: 0 Ninja Skill: 0 Jutsu Types: Fire: 0 Water: 0 Earth: 0 Wind: 0 Dark: 0 Light: 0 Ice: 0 Thunder: 0 Sound: 0 Sand: 6 Plant: 0 Bloodline: 3 Known Jutsu Ninjutsu Sand Barrier [NJ] Description/Seals: [Rat, Boar, Ram] After performing the seals, a large barrier of and will come up around you and protect you from certain attacks. Even though both parents were from the Village of Mirage, only Yuudai’s father was a descendant of the Sabaku bloodline. His mother knew about this and really thought nothing of it. She had come to learn that those of the Sabaku clan were prone to fits of rage and intense emotions. Unlike, some of the other villagers in the sand villages, the couple wasn’t afraid of what kind of person that their offspring would become. They’d love them just the same and that was that. It was a rather inopportune time that Yuudai was born because a sandstorm had kicked up with great fury. His mother could not delay the birth any longer, so he had to be born out there in the unforgiving deserts. Because of the dangerous conditions that were forced upon the mother, she passed away shortly after giving birth to Yuudai. But she did live long enough to give him the name. Once the expedition made their way back to the Village of Mirages, Yuudai’s mother was given a ritualistic burial. This evoked tears from his father and her husband. He was now left with the difficult task of watching over his son who had unwillingly taken the life of his own mother. There was definitely a grudge present within his father against his son, but he later came to terms that he couldn’t change the past… Yuudai’s early childhood years pleasant to say the least. Nothing extraordinary happened to him during that period which was necessarily a negative thing. His father never informed him of his Sabaku clan heritage, but it was apparent when the child threw violent temper tantrums almost daily. Through stern discipline and understanding, his father tried to wean him off of these dangerous habits. Some of the villagers had a hint that Yuudai was of Sabaku heritage simply because of his red and black hair. There weren’t many in the village who had red hair – much less those that had it mixed in with black. There wasn’t anything that they could show or say to prove this, but it was always floating around. It should have been a privilege and a great honor to be a part of the great Sabaku bloodline – to be related to one of the greatest Kage of the land of the sands. But some people had come to fear what the bloodline brought with it… The growing Yuudai had been trying to train in preparation for the Academy in the Village of Mirages. His father taught him a couple jutsus during this time, but told him nothing of his heritage. He felt that it’d be better to keep his son in the dark about it because it would only bring harm in the future. This way of thinking would probably backfire and indeed bring harm in the future. Yuudai didn’t know who he was – only that he was a young child hoping to join the Ninja Academy. His father had told stories of the great war that had taken place some years ago and that was also a contributing factor to why he wanted to join the school. These tales were of courage and valor that made Yuudai want to become just liked the heroes detailed in them. During training, these fits of rage were few and far between which was promising. His father didn’t want his son to be an uncontrollable beast who breaks under pressure. Then the unthinkable happened. His father had taken his son out to the desert dunes for some training. During that time a couple of rogue ninja from the Sabaku clan tracked their footprints in the sand and watched them from afar. One night out in the sea of sand, these rogue ninja murdered Yuudai’s father and left Yuudai to wither away in the middle of the desert. It is unknown right now as to why members of his father’s own clan would murder him. Yuudai’s was severely distraught from this experience, but took what his father had taught him to heart. He was in the middle of the desert with no one to depend on, but himself. His only goal now was to find a way back to the Village of Mirages… For a couple years, Yuudai traveled the desert – going from outpost to outpost in hopes of finding his village. Either no one knew the way or were unwilling to tell a child, he only found himself getting lost all too often. The deserts were much more dangerous than any other area in the world, according to Yuudai, but that's because he hasn't been outside of the endless sands. It was a wonder how someone so young was able to live for more than a few days out in the heat, but the young shinobi found a way. He kept telling himself that he would not die out here. His mother had died out on the sands when he was born, according to his father, and Yuudai didn't want to meet a similar fate. Through the many days, weeks, and months that ensued Yuudai learned much about the desert. He learned what things were safe to eat, what things he should stay away from, and how to make sure he wasn't going in circles. At the young age of around 10 or 11 he had learned tracking skills that would take several years for an adult to learn. The reason he learned of it so fast was because he was forced to. If he didn't adapt to his environment accordingly he was going to die - right then and there. Whilst spending most of his time simply trying to stay alive, Yuudai kept training his jutsus that his father had taught him. They were sand jutsus and consisted of a Genjutsu and a Ninjutsu. He became pretty skilled at forming the hand seals needed to perform the jutsus and soon had perfected two jutsus that could help him survive in the desert. Even though he could use them very well - he was in no way a master at them. Yuudai still lacked the chakra and endurance neccessary to sustain the skills. When things looked grim, he still pushed on. Yuudai had watched larger desert creatures devour smaller ones time and time again. It was the law of life in the desert and he figured that it'd apply everywhere. The strong outlived the weak, so to live he needed to be strong. This experience would leave an everlasting impression on Yuudai for many years to come. His skin had become thick with the constant battery of sand storms as had his spirit. During one occasion, Yuudai actually had encountered a pack of wolves native to the sands. They were pretty large and were covered in sandy tan fur. It looked like the wolves viewed Yuudai as prey as they all had encircled him. Keeping his cool, he tried to think of some way to avoid these hounds. The only things at his arsenal were a pair of jutsus and his bare hands. Yuudai didn't get the opportunity to strike first as each wolf leapt at the young boy in succession. Instinctively, he had went through his hand seals as quickly as he could to put up a sand barrier. He succeeded in doing so as the wolves bounced off of the earthen barrier and collapsed onto the sands below. The wolves saw Yuudai as a creature stronger than them and viewed him as a predator. As any prey would do in this situation, they turned tail and fled. Yuudai was surprised that he'd fended off a small pack of sand wolves. Perhaps he wasn't so weak after all - perhaps the desert had made him stronger. As Yuuda's tracking ability got better, he began noticing the tracks of merchants. He knew that they were merchant tracks because in addition to the human tracks there were also animal ones close behind. Those would be the animals used to carry heavy loads. He noted the patterns of them and had hoped that they would lead him back to the Village of Mirages. Oddly, Yuudai didn't happen upon any merchants on his way back, but he didn't care. He'd placed so much faith in his interpretation of the tracks that he fully believed they lead back to the village. He was right. Yuudai had finally found his way back home, but had come back forever changed. The desert dunes had caused him to mature more in terms of his brain. He knew how to think on his toes and fend for himself better compared to the other children that were of his age. Most would probably be distraught and carry a huge burden of sorrow on their faces for the rest of their lives, but Yuudai didn’t. He knew that he had to move on in life with a smile even though the pain inside was intense. Emotion showed weakness and the desert had taught Yuudai that it was never okay to be weak. The weak perish. |

Most of the information in the beginning was stuff Shiro already knew. Genjutsu used chakra to disrupt the target's chakra flow and create illusions to their senses to hinder them or creates an illusion for all who look at something. There were several basic types: Direct Target Initiated Illusions, Multi-Target Initiated Illusions, Area Encompassing Illusions, and Passive Stationary Illusions. There were some more, but they weren't covered in this book. The first group were illusions directed against a single target only starting once the seals were completed. An example of this would be Shiro's 'Weight' technique, which effected the targets senses of sight and touch to make them feel they are overweight and unable to move as well. The second group was far more difficult to pull off, able to effect multiple targets with similar hindering effects as the first group. These were limited to highly advanced genjutsu users though. The third group was slightly more advanced than the first group, allowing the user to effect all with a set area around them. The effects were far less intense than a direct illusion, but using it on multiple targets came as an advantage. The fourth group was the least effective in combat. The user projects an illusion around them that effects all who come into contact with it. An example of this strange type would be Shiro's 'Shrubbery' technique, creating the illusion to all who stumble into his area that he is a mere tree or other plant. The fourth group was best suited for ambush tactics. After those four categories there were the different effect; false attack illusions, distraction illusions, concealment illusions, hindering illusions, etc.. Those could then be broken down into elemental categories, but that was far to specific for Shiro right now. He was just going over the basics one more time before getting to what he was really looking for. Then he found it, a simple title that was absolutely essential in the defense against other genjutsu users. 'Dispel' Shiro started slowly and carefully, wanting to absorb everything without having to re-read everything several times. The beginning started off with the uses of the technique as usual, so the reading can determine if they want to continue reading early on. Obviously, the use of the technique was to essentially 'disable' any genjutsu affecting the user. Without it they would be forced to suffer the full effects of the genjutsu until it wore off, though by then the effects would likely be enough for the enemy to make quick work of them. There were other more complicated ways to prevent or disable genjutsu, but this was easy enough for a genin like himself to manage. He continued his reading. Since most genjutsu disrupts the chakra flow of an opponent to trick their senses, the most common way to remove it is to correct one's chakra flow. This is what the 'Dispel' technique was meant to do. By sending a set amount of chakra flowing through one's chakra network, sending the rest of the chakra back into it's proper flow. It would only be unsuccessful if the attackers skill with genjutsu and overall knowledge was greater than the one under the genjutsu. If the enemy's is greater, their disruption would be too complex for the user's set amount of chakra sent through their network to set in order. Of course, he'd need to know if he was under an illusion before using the technique, though most tended to be obvious like his own 'Weight' technique. Some weren't quite as obvious, like his 'Shrubbery' technique. Now that he knew how the technique was supposed to work, he needed to attempt it now. |

Usually, he'd check the book out before attempting a new technique since the library wasn't the best or most polite pace to train. However, he could be subtle about this one without making any noise or disturbing anyone. Lowering his hands below the table, he performed his seals while focusing his chakra. 'Tiger, Rat, Ox, Bird...' He'd been fairly good with his hands and memorizing things, performing seals came fairly easy for him. He could see the changes happening immediately. His skin began to spread out like the rising of bread in an oven. His stomach inflated like a balloon. He could feel his body getting heavier and his ability to move getting more and more difficult. Within seconds he felt as though he could barely move at all, constricted by his own skin and the added mass. It was all in his mind though. He had put himself under his own genjutsu! Since it was a direct target one, nobody else in the library could see his 'change' occur. And since he wasn't doing anything physical, there were no odd movements on his part to even give it away. Now under a genjutsu, he could practice dispelling it until he got it right. Looking back to the book, he checked to see the signs he needed to form. 'Tiger'. Make that sign, fairly simple. Performing the seal beneath the table, he sent a small burst of chakra through his network. He closed his eyes as he did so. After waiting a few seconds without feeling anything, he opened them to reveal... no change. Shiro looked back at the book to determine what it was he could have done wrong. He went over everything he'd read already before coming to a realization. 'Only genjutsu produced by opponents weaker than the genjutsu the defender is able to perform is possible to release in this manner.' Essentially it would only work if 'Attacker's Genjutsu strength < Defender's Genjutsu strength', but Shiro was both the attacker and the defender in this case. Since they were equal, the attack would win and the genjutsu would remain. ---This was a really dumb idea... At least nobody else could possibly know what I did unless I go for help.--- He thought his options over. ---What I need to do is get better at it than when I started. Then my 'Dispel' should work.--- He began to go over the basics one more time, making sure he didn't have any misconceptions on the material. |

After roughly fifteen minutes he had finished going over all the basics he already knew, helping to solidify his current knowledge. Apparently he'd missed to part about beginning the chakra burst in his head, then working its way down his body. It was supposed to make it a little easier to use. Figuring now would be a good time to try again, he began to gather his chakra as he brought his hands beneath the table once more. Forming the seal of the Tiger, he sent the burst of chakra through his system. He felt a somewhat of a clearing effect, like clearing your eyes after waking up. He could feel the weight begin to lift. Looking down, he could see the extra mass seem to fade away. It was over, his genjutsu dispelled and his senses returned to normal. Looking around, he could see that nobody either noticed or was paying any attention to him. Despite the inherent problems that may arise with putting oneself under genjutsu, it did have an advantage while training. Because of the properties of the 'attacker/defender' relationship, only once your skill had surpassed what you had when you activated the genjutsu could you break dispel it. It was therefore a perfect measure to determine if you had improved. Not only that, but being under the genjutsu was a pretty good incentive to learn how to get out of it. It would also improve recognize the symptoms better and react to them in a combat situation more quickly. Shiro planned on using it during future genjutsu training. He rose from his seat and closed the book. He wasn't nearly done with it despite having learned the technique. Each time he went over it he found something he had missed the last time. Keeping it and reading it in the future would likely shed light on more mysteries. He walked over to the front counter, smiling at the elderly lady once more. "I would like to make a standard check-out of this book." The woman took the book and opened the front cover to reveal a special seal. Touching it lightly with her finger, she ran it down the face of it. Although Shiro was unaware of what was actually going on, she was applying her chakra to it to activate it. The seal was to keep track of the book and would make a humming sound if Shiro was late in returning it. By activating the seal's twin deep in the basement, they could determine the distance and direction between the two seals. Basically, allowing them to find it if the book was ever stolen. It was the knowledge of the village and needed to be protected... After activating the seal, she made a written record of the checkout. "Return it within two weeks or you'll be charged for each day late." Her voice creaked like an unstable bridge and was rather faint, which was added to her speaking softly since they were in a library. Shiro nodded to confirm his understanding. He was well aware of the conditions of checking out a book, having done so several times. If he felt any annoyance by this in the slightest, he didn't show any. Why get flustered over somebody doing their job? The elderly lady then handed him the book, which he took gratefully. "Thank you. Have a nice day..." With a final smile, he turned around and walked out of the heavy wooden doors. He'd return to the vast information resource some other time in the near future. [CLOSED] |
