"Hmmm.." said the Jounin. He was about 6 feet in height, and almost two times as old as Tsu was. His brown eyes moved from child to child, taking in information based on their physical features and records. The room seemed stuffy and dense with anticipation. Some of the children even began to sweat as they wondered what mission they would possibly receive. Pacing left and right, he began to size up all the new genin. There were ten genin standing nervously in a row. Each of them had varying heights, skin tones, hair, and eyes. Tsu stood third-to-last starting from the left. She was becoming bored with this process. "Alright!" said the Jounin. He raised his fist firmly in the air to accompany his exclamation. "I've got a super cool quest for one very special ninja!" he boasted charismatically. Tsu instantly understood what he was doing. Since ninja usually go about missions in groups of three, and there were ten genin available, he was trying to single one out so that the groups could be assigned smoothly. Not only that, but to ensure the safety of that single ninja, the mission they receive will be menial and without any danger. A couple of the other genin understood what was happening too; their lips curled in criticism at the Jounin's facade. The others, however, fell for his loud voice and jovial nature. "Can anybody here use puppets!?" he continued, yelling his questions like a preacher convincing atheists. Tsu looked down at the ground modestly. Technically, she could use puppets, but she had never considered the prospect before. Normally she would attach her chakra strings to projectile weapons to affect their trajectory. She wasn't very good at acting since she had a low charisma for tasks; she would simply nod her head and do it placidly. Such ways weren't fitting for a puppet-user. The Jounin asked once more. Tsu looked off to the side. Reluctantly, she raised her hand. She realized what she was getting herself into, but they would have found out she could do it eventually. Jounin were sneaky like that. "Why didn't you say so!?" he asked obnoxiously, and rudely grabbed her arm, walking her to a table. He was gently forceful in doing so. Bending his knees so that his face was at the height of hers, he reached into his pocket and handed her a piece of paper. "Though this is a mission that a genin can handle alone, its super super important, okay?" he whispered. He might have convinced a more gullible genin, but all Tsu heard was lies and over-exaggeration. The mission was probably something trivial like walking dogs, or scaring crows. If the mission was important enough, it would have been assigned by the Tanikage, instead of a Jounin. Tsu sighed. She walked out of the assignment office. She strided down the hallways and out the door with a dissatisfied look on her face. That facial expression warded the otherwise talkative citizens from conversing with her at the moment. As she walked, she unwrapped the piece of paper with the description of her mission. It wasn't even read to her by an official! Tsu had the feeling that she'd be shafted. On the bright side, she was looking forward to filling her pockets with a little yen. She wished to walk into stores and buy weapons like the older ninja did, but could hardly buy a kunai with the 100 yen she had now. As her eyes scanned the parchment further, her mouth frowned up more and more. "NO YEN? THIS MISSION SUCKS!" Tsu thought to herself. The mission read: "A wandering puppeteer has recently had a book filled with his latest tricks stolen from him by a quick child named Iziki. While the child is virtually harmless, his awareness allows him to escape the average person easily. He is somewhere within the Silent Forest. With nobody else to turn to except a ninja, the puppeteer asked us for help. Since his puppeteering services are free, he has no money to pay for the job. You have to accept some of his inventory as payment. Good luck!" Tsu's eyes narrowed regretfully. It now made sense that the Jounin asked if any of the genin could use puppets. Tsu had half-a-mind to go back and request a mission with actual yen payment, but she realized that she would probably get in the bad side of the officials. That would cause her to not be picked for missions she would actually want. Tsu stomped her foot on the ground. There was nothing she could do but accept it, complete it, and move on. Yet one thing was clear... ...she couldn't wait to leave! In her storm of mental complaints, she almost forgot that this was her first mission! She could leave the village and see the world! As she approached the way out, she had two options. Either she could go through the waterfall, or go up the river. Though she always wanted to see the waterfall, she assumed it looked more beautiful from the outside. Therefore, she would take the river on the way out, and use the waterfall on the way in. After showing the guards of the Black Winds her papers, she darted off and up the river toward the Silent Forest. Needless to say, she felt the outside world was brilliant. The countless trees, birds, sights and sounds astounded her to no end. She smiled as she saw bodies of water with animals stopping by to drink, or nests where birds lay. Although she had seen all of this before, the personal freedom associated with these sights made it more satisfying. However, as she traveled, she noticed less and less animals along her path. She was so involved in sight-seeing that she hardly noticed she had made her way into the Silent Forest. It as absurdly silent for a forest. She withdrew her papers from her pocket and examined the directions. Apparently, there was a caravan nearby where the puppeteer lived. After raising her head from the paper to look for a while, she ended up finding puffs of smoke in the sky that signified a home. Following it for a short 5 minutes, she came across an old caravan that looked older than she was. Outside of the caravan was an old man by a fire, cooking his dinner in a pot over it. He noticed her immediately and called her over to him. She complied. As she came closer to the old man, she noticed more distinguishing features. His hair was grey yet not balding, and his wrinkles barely showed. He was aging quite nicely. "So you're the one who came to get my book?" he asked. His voice was raspy. Tsu nodded. "The brat is not too far. He came back seeking more loot, and just left. He went that way." The old man pointed a youthful-looking finger to the west. Without waiting for any more information, Tsu leaped into action, jumping from tree to tree. The old man sighed at how rude children were these days. He didn't even get a chance to offer her some of his stew with his puppet. Coming from behind a tree, the true old man released chakra strings from his realistic looking puppet. His puppet was a little outdated; it was one that he made to look like him when he was 40. He couldn't believe she thought that was him. Scratching his saggy wrinkles, he made his way into his caravan to wait for her to come back. As Tsu was making her way west in the Silent Forest, it began to rain. The water was filtering through the trees and creating a muddy ground. Before she had time to complain, she suddenly stopped. A boy with an umbrella was sitting in a small clearing in the middle of the woods. From what Tsu could see, it looked like he was reading a book. She smiled. "Too easy.." Tsu thought to herself as she lowered from the tree, climbing down with kunai. She decided she would try to sneak up on the boy. Walking slowly and crouching, she tip-toed toward the boy. However, before she could get within range to grab him, he suddenly turned his head and saw her. "I heard you!" he yelled before throwing down a smoke bomb. Tsu ran over to try and catch him, but it was too late. He had disappeared. Tsu stomped one foot on the ground. "Crap!" she exclaimed. She was about to go back to the old man when she noticed imprints on the ground. The mud created by the rain made footprints on the ground for her to follow. After a silent "Yes!" to herself, she began to follow the tracks to catch the sneaky kid. She ran at full speed in order to make up for lost time. Each of her steps make a weird squishing noise in their wake. Tsu also was thankful for the rain; not only was it refreshing, but it allowed for such a lucky tracking mechanism. After running continuously for five minutes, she saw him again. She stopped once more, and almost fell in the mud because of it. Realizing her mistake from last time, she tried to sneak up to him again. Her confidence began to rise when she got closer than she did the first time, but it plummeted when his head suddenly cocked in her direction. "You're a stoopy face!" he teased before another smoke bomb exploded. Tsu threw herself into the smoke, but caught nothing. Laying stomach-down in the mud, she hit the ground with her fist. "Crap! Crap! Crap!" she yelled. Her voice almost squeaked. Raising from the ground with disdain, the scanned the ground for tracks. She found tracks that were identical to the ones she had followed before, and began to trace them. Instead of a full run, she lightly jogged along the footprints. She would catch him if it took her all day! Originally, Tsu would have left this mission at the drop of a dime. However, now that the kid had sparked a challenge for her, she wouldn't stop until she caught him. Tsu eventually saw him ahead with his trademark umbrella and the book of tricks. Combining the knowledge of both mistakes she made before, moved toward the boy. Sneaking up on him was a skill that took physical prowess and subconscious intention. She no longer thought specifically about how to sneak up on him; all she focused on was the boy himself. As Tsu approached soundlessly, a small grin began to form on her face. The boy sensed another person in his presence, but by then, it was too late. Tsu dove at him and seized the book, as well as pushing him in the mud. "Take that!" she teased as she broke out into a run. Tsu sprinted toward the old man's caravan. The boy broke into a run after her. After playing tag with Kaos, she could run quite a while before tiring out. However, the boy seemed to share Tsu's speed and stamina; he was keeping up with her, though he was just slow enough to not catch up to her. Their feet made a splashing symphony as they ran, but the rain had stopped for the most part. When the old man's caravan was in sight, Tsu slowed her pace a little. The boy still continued to run as fast as he could. "Old man!" Tsu yelled. Her voice echoed through the otherwise silent atmosphere. The realistic puppet emerged from the tent. "Catch!" Tsu yelled as she tossed the book into the air. The puppet caught it briskly. Meanwhile, the boy caught up to Tsu. He realized there was nothing he could do now that the book was back in the puppeteer's hand. Instead of putting up a resistance of sorts, the boy's eyes began to water. Tsu glanced over at him in confusion. When the boy realized that everyone was watching him, he turned, and made silent noises that sounded like crying. Tsu made a skeptical face. "I..I just wanted to be a puppeteer..." the boy mumbled. Tsu slapped her palm against her face. "What a stupid reason to steal..." Tsu thought to herself. The old man, however, was sympathetic. Suddenly, the realistic puppet fell to the floor in a heap. Tsu, who was still convinced it was the old man, ran over to help. She grabbed the puppet to lift it. Just as she did, she realized that it was a puppet the entire time. A vein of bulged in Tsu's forehead. "Show yourself!" she urged. The real old man, who looked his age this time, emerged from behind a tree. He walked over solemnly to the boy. "I will train you, but only if you earn the book." he said softly. The boy nodded enthusiastically. They continued to talk to each other, going over random subjects such as role-playing and control techniques. Tsu felt ignored. "Ahem." Tsu coughed loudly to gather the old man's attention. He looked over to her slowly. "Oh yes, your reward. The box." he pointed for a moment, and continued to talk to the boy. Tsu walked over to the box, mumbling to herself about how much of a waste this entire mission was. While her peers were probably out fighting other ninja, she was here, catching pre-pubescent children in the rain. After opening the top, she peered into the box. A man-shaped puppet lay there. On his arm was a blade that looked as if it retracted secretly. Tsu picked up the puppet by the underarms. It didn't look too shabby. With a little bit of customization, maybe she could make it worthwhile. Assuming the old man wanted nothing else to do with her, she began to walk back to the Valley. She connected chakra strings to her new puppet, and it walked with her. As she promised herself, she would take the waterfall route. She would probably walk past birds, trees, and other interesting things on her way back. Even though it was a weak, anti-climactic mission, at least the view was nice. Maybe she would try to sneak up on a couple birds on the way back, as well. Walking soundlessly through the silent forest with her newfound companion, she would prepare herself for the missions ahead. Hopefully, they won't be rank D. |
