When you post in the Finished Topics section and you're listing the stats you used, do you have to put all of your points in those ore do you just have to put at least 1 and the rest can be distributed however you like?

You have to put 1 point in every listed stat, but you can distribute the rest as you wish.

For example:
Example

Stats used:

Agility
Strength
Speed

Total points: 15

Agility +1
Strength +13
Speed +1

It's not exactly what I meant, for instance if instead of

Example

Agility +1
Strength +13
Speed +1

I could do

Example

Agility +1
Strength +1
Speed +1
Casting +12

I'm wondering if that's possible

No...If you don't use the stat you can't put points in it.

Yes, you can only put points in a stat you listed that you used, and actually used in your topic.

In simple language: You can only add points to stats you used in a thread. And you would need to list those stats in the Finished Topics topic

So a character that hits an annoying rodent with his sword can gain as much skill in that area as a guy that makes an entire thread about training with his sword?

Also, yay for topics in which no stats are used -_-

You always use a stat, intelligence and spirit are the most common. and yes if you want you can do that...

1. He/she would have to actually use the skill. Just slapping a rodent isn't using the skill(unless the person has very low Weapon skill). But yes, a person can get as much skill by doing some light training for a while as a person doing a whole thread just training as hard as he can. It is a little unfair, but it's not easy to make a grading system that would take such things into comparison. It's too complex for CoC. The staff has enough to do already.
2. Most topics will involve a stat of some kind. Just find those you used most, or even just a little. You can tweak it a little. If I have a thread where I run a little, I could add Speed as a stat.

Edit: Max, you beat me. I just hope I have better explanation. >_<
And you're right, you often use spirit or intelligence.

Don't feel pressured to do 'training' threads though. >.> Yuck.

Just write a small line about how your character 'flashbacked' or 'picked something up' during the thread. Then add the points how you want.

The thing, you get to distribute them as you widh. Say you did want to raise casting, but you could only incorporate very little of the skill into the thread. So what? Still list it (if that is the skill you're trying to get up higher) and dump most of the points in it.

Also, say you used "strength, weapon skill, casting" in a thread, you could list just casting, as there is no rule pertaining that you have to put all the stats you use (and they suggest not to do that.)

The best way to do threads is to just write one and then decide which stats you want to increase. Just make sure you actually use the stat in question at least once and you'll be golden.
