Baka fell back to avoid the terrorist's attack. As he fell, he placed his hands over his shoulders and placed both hands firmly on the ground as both of his feet smashed into his opponent's chin. The man let out a grunt as blood and a chipped tooth fell from his mouth. He then crumpled to the floor unconscious, allowing Baka to rise back to his feet and continue on with his mission. It was hard work, but that was precisely why Baka was doing it. After all, if it were easy, anybody could do it. Baka wiped his forehead to feel something warm and wet; blood. He must have cut it close with that last attack and taken a nick from the sword. Then again, he couldn't even feel it so it wasn't a problem. Baka wiped his hand off on his pants and continued on. He had a mission to complete and there was simply no time to be playing around, even for Baka.

Baka proceeded down the hallway, feeling the building around him. Baka placed his hand on the wall and let his fingers slide along the peeling wallpaper. Baka's hands hit something and he stopped. He let his hands feel around as he listened for any activity. As his hands traveled he felt hinges; he was at a door. Baka slowly leaned his face over and placed his ear on the door. The room beyond was silent. Baka was almost ready to move on when he heard a sneeze come from the room directly beside the door, shortly followed by a harsh sounding 'hush' sound. There were two men as far as Baka could tell, each standing next to the door to ambush anybody who came in. Baka thought on this for a second before deciding the best way to deal with them. Baka took a quiet step to his left and readied his fist. Baka then took a deep breath before suddenly smashing his right hand through the plaster wall at head level. As soon as his hand reached the other side he opened it, grabbed a fist full of hair and violently pulled his fist back out, slamming the unseen foe's head into and through the wall. His face wore a shocked expression that Baka would never see as he raised his foot up and brought it smashing down on the terrorist's face, driving his body downward through the plaster wall and straight to the ground.

Baka didn't have to wait long before the second enemy responded with a blast from his assault rifle. Baka ducked down, avoiding the shots as their ripped through the wall. After a few seconds the short burst ceased and the air was left with only the weak sound of the man's raged breath to fill it. Baka took a silent step to the right and stood up so he was in front of the door and waited. There was a soft footstep from the next room and Baka moved into action. He took a deep breath and jumped into the air, smashing both of his feet into the door for a powerful kick. The door snapped off its hinges and crashed into the hapless target, knocking him off his balance. Baka did not waste this opportunity. As soon as he was back on his feet, he jumped into the air again and snapped his right leg out in a straight kick.

This time the kick broke through the door and connected firmly with his foe's chest. He let out a dull grunt and stumbled backwards but did not fall. As the splinters of wood that had been the door were falling to the floor, the terrorist recovered and raised his gun to face Baka. However, before any shots could be fired, Baka grabbed the barrel of the rifle and pulled it so it fired harmlessly into the wall behind him. As the man fell forward, Baka raised his leg up and crushed the foe's chest with his knee. The man let out a strange gurgle and passed out. Baka shoved the dead load off his leg and turned to listen to the building. Reinforcements were coming to the scene, but Baka was confident they wouldn't be able to do anything. As Baka turned to leave the room, the reinforcements were already making a line in the room between him and the door.

Baka stood silently, thinking of how he could do this without getting shot too many times. Before any definite answers could arise in the slow and bunny filled depths of Baka's mind, three small cylindrical objects crashed through the windows and exploded on the floor, instantly filling the room with gas. Baka immediately fell prone to his stomach, only to hear the sound of shattering glass behind him. Footsteps hit the ground and the room became a hellish cacophony of gunfire. Within half a minute, the terrorists fell to the might of Shin-Ra's infantrymen known as Sentry. Somebody brandished an Aero materia and swept the room clear of the stinging gas, allowing Baka to stand up and brush the dust from his chest.

"This floor is clear sir," the squad captain told Baka. "The boss is holed up on the next floor. He's got a hostage so we can't get in. It's up to you to take him out on your own."

"Got it!" Baka said. "I'll play fair and fight hard!"

"Er," the man said. "Maybe you should... never mind. Best of luck sir."

Baka didn't stay to respond. But the time the Sentry was attempting to fill Baka's head with a sensible idea, the pink haired SOLDIER had already left the room and was running towards the next set of stairs. As Baka cleared the corner the distinctive sound of gunfire flared up, indicating he was in the right spot. Baka was ready to ascend to the next level, but the sudden yell and thud sound a body makes when it dies dissuaded Baka from advancing. A few scurried entered the room and hid behind the wall. They were heavily armored by the sounds of their footsteps, making the Sentry members.

"Damn, damn, damn, damn, damn!" one exclaimed as he reloaded his rifle. "Don't these bastards ever let up?"

"You said a dirty," Baka observed in a shocked yet accusing voice. The soldier stared at him incredulously as he fumbled with his magazine. There was a sudden click and a sigh of relief as the man finally snapped his ammunition into place. However, before he could rush out to his most probable death, Baka ad the most amazingly rare event of a bright idea.

"Wait!" Baka exclaimed. "I've got an idea! I'll go climb up to the next floor through a window and beat up the bad guys! Then you can help me beat the boss!"

"Er..." the Sentry man said. The gunfire suddenly halted, which meant that the terrorists had heard Baka's idea. The Sentry man almost warned the pink haired moron, but he had already left the window and began to climb up a rain gutter. By the time Baka was up to the next level and rolling in through the window, the Sentry men had already taken advantage of the distracted terrorists, stormed the stairwell and taken most of the second floor. Then again, if Baka had anything, he had dumb luck. As Baka tumbled in through his selected window and rolled to his fighting stance, he heard a yell and the unmistakable click of a gun.

"Hold it, pinky," a stern voice said. Baka snapped to attention and strained his hearing as precisely as he could manage. The wind blew through the room and illuminated it to Baka as light would do for vision. He was in a large room with windows on three walls. The man and hostage were in the center, easily out of range of any window with a clear view of the door. As the situation stood, Baka and his foe were a dozen or so feet away from one another and the terrorist leader had a gun. From his certainty, Baka had the feeling that his opponent was not unfamiliar with the weapon, making the advantage his.

"Let her go," Baka demanded in as serious of a voice as he could muster.

"I think not," the man said in his gravelly voice. "See here now; this little beauty is the only thing standing between me and a one way ticked back into a holding cell in Shin-Ra tower. So, I hope you aren't offended of I refuse."

"Don't you know the bad guys lose?" Baka asked.

"Bad guy?" the terrorist demanded. "Is that all I am to you? You drone! You have no idea who you work for, do you?"

"Shut up!" Baka said. "You're stupid! You don't know that you're a bad guy!"

"There's no reasoning with you bastards from Shin-Ra," the terrorist said. "When you get to hell, tell Hojo that Blaze thanks him for the 'gift' he gave me. Now, just d- AGH!"

It took Baka a second to figure out what just happened. After a fraction of a second, Baka realized that the hostage had grown tired of waiting and bit into the terrorists arm. Baka took the chance and began his dash forward for his first strike.

It's a funny thing how the world can change with the slightest of things. If Baka had run a little bit slower than the wind would not have deafened him to the startled screams and burnt sizzling from the hostage. If Blaze had chose to lead his group to the south side of upper Midgar rather than the north side then he would have been able to escape off the Highway that was still under construction rather than fight here. If a masked SOLDIER had not violently struck the hostage, she would have stayed in Sector 6 as a prostitute instead of seek her fortune as a Shin-Ra secretary. In Hojo's lab assistant had not accidentally dropped a fire materia into the Mako tank during that fated SOLDIER training program then he would not have created a monster. However, all those things had happened and the twisted present was the end result. The present is a harsh master that deals in absolutes, leaving the mistakes of the past to plague those who lie in the now.

The woman screamed as Blaze's raw flesh scalded her mouth. This gave Baka enough time to kick the gun out of Blaze's hand, sending it flying across the room to skid into a wall. In response, Blaze shoved the hostage at Baka and began to run towards the door, which was violently kicked in by the Sentry units who had arrived just seconds before. Blaze cursed in a language Baka had never heard before as the Sentry members entered the room and circled the terrorist. Baka helped the woman stand off to the side before he apprehended the terrorist.

"Hands up!" one of the Sentry men said.

"Or what?" Blaze asked. "You'll shoot me? I'm scared."

"I said put your hands up!" the man screamed. "On your head, now!"

"What?" Blaze said mockingly. "Up or on my head? Make up your mind."

"Yeah," Baka said. "Make up your mind."

"Shut up!" the man snapped. "I said-"

"Too late," Blaze said. A few stray gasps suddenly broke out, leaving Baka to wonder what was happening. If Baka could see then he would notice that Blaze was now glowing. The glow had started out as a faint shimmer and was now a glow like a fresh light bulb. Before anybody could react, Blaze literally exploded into a fireball that shook the foundations of the building. Baka was launched backwards and out the window from the force of the blast and landed on the street below in a pained and crumpled mess. After a few seconds, Baka managed to stand up, listening to the sounds of the roaring flames and his cracking bones. When he was finally standing again, a Sentry member ran up to him and helped him back to the transport vehicle. The fire would be contained and the hostage would be released after some questions. Baka didn't care; his part in this was over.

That is, he could only hope it was.

That night, Baka woke startled up in his quarters. As he lay in bed, panting, a man walked from the shadows. Baka heard his soft footsteps on the floor and turned to face the intruder.

"Who's there?" Baka asked.

"Just a friendly family member from Shin-Ra," a soft voice replied. "That was some fine fighting I saw from you today. I'm impressed. Now, as for the little issue of loose ends, I'm here to talk to you about what exactly you did or did not hear."

"What do you mean?" Baka asked.

"Whatever you heard today," the voice said. "Whatever you were told, forget it. Feel on your nightstand." Baka extended his hand blindly out and felt around his table until his hands came to a small sphere of some kind. As he held it he felt stronger somehow.

"What is this?" Baka asked.

"A gift," the voice said. "Now, you're going to go back to sleep and keep on fighting for Shin-Ra as you have. As far anyone else is concerned, we never met and today was just a regular hostage extraction. Do you understand me?" Baka nodded, but no answer came. Then, a few seconds later, Baka suddenly realized that he was alone in his room, still holding the materia. With that, he set it back on his stand and went to bed. When he woke up the next day, the event of the night was gone from his mind and today was another day in the life of Baka.
