Thoughts in Chaos
Several days had passed for Jackie. It had taken her this time to heal from her near fatal injuries sustained during the transportation of JENOVA. The project had been a complete failure. She was lucky to still be alive. Reno’s helicopter had crashed and sent shrapnel that pretty much would have killed her if she had shot the woman she had her scope on. That woman saved Jackie’s life. Jackie was grateful. She was certainly grateful. She hadn’t survived dying enough times to be totally immune to gratitude for being pulled from the brink. Not yet. She felt the scar on her chest… The memories came back.

She was about ready to become an official 3rd Class SOLDIER if she remembered correctly. During an exercise something went wrong. Something always seems to go wrong. Her Sniper position was overrun with monsters. A strange creature sent its blade like arm through her chest. She thought she was dead. She had died. She imagined that it was her adoptive father’s Prestige that caused her to survive.

She had managed to make a full recovery both times. It looked like she still had some fuel to run on, and she was definitely going to use it. She had been given a lot. She had to repay everyone somehow. Repay shinra for giving her a new heart by being loyal to them. She’d repay Angeles, assuming she ever saw the ex-TURK again somehow…Angeles had Jackie’s deep gratitude. She’d hold the shot if she was ever ordered to fire.

She didn’t appreciate being treated like a faceless no name SOLDIER though. She had cost her company more money than she felt she was worth though; That was enough for her to accept such treatment. Today she sat in the Recreational hall, oiling her gun. The rifle had gotten a bit dirty from laying in the dirt, it was her purpose here and now to clean out the engraving on the side of the barrel. It was encrusted with dirt.

She dug at the dirt with her nails and tried cleaning it out with her cloth. Eventually she pulled out a paper clip, unfolded it and began to use that to clean out the grit from the grooves. It took about thirty minutes of her life, but it was worth it. Markus Sword… What a marvelous gun you had made. Maybe she should look him up someday.

She eyed the scope on the gun…it was broken. She replaced and set the broken scope to the side. She’d send it to the repair word or throw it away. Maybe give it to some of the kids on the streets she passed. They might appreciate a real live scope even if it didn’t work anymore. She put the scope in her pocket at that prospect. By the end of the hour she smelled densely of gun oil. Her hands smelt very strong of it as well, but her gun…oh it shined.

She took aim, following an invisible target for a moment…then bam…she acted like she could feel the recoil of the imaginary shot. It was good to go. She was one of the few snipers. At least she felt like one of the few. She had never been pitted alongside that many other snipers before. Usually she worked alone unless it was a big project like JENOVA’s transportation for example.

What a failure that had been.

A group of SOLDIERs had walked in. She knew these people…They often ran across each other on the barracks here. She hid her head in shame due to her performance in her last mission. The one called Jonathan began laughing immediately. ”Hey there Head Shot.” That was he nickname in SOLDIER. They called her Head Shot because of the fact that she was a sniper. ”Heh, if you keep almost dying on us, I think we’ll have to give you a new name.”

”How does…Bloody Mess sound?” he laughed, another one, his name was Kiba, decided to chime in, ”Or how about ‘MEDIC!’?” The room burst into laughing, but Jackie’s face turned a slight shade of red. ”Alright you guys, that’s enough.” She said, punching John’s shoulder in a friendly manner. ”Where the faux were you losers on that mission?”

John and the boys sat down on the couch that had been put aside for the members of SOLDIER on base here. ”Pffffft. We weren’t good enough to be put out with the rest of the fodder. The guys nodded gravely. Even if they joked about the fact that Jackie seemed to almost die on a regular basis, they really respected her because of the fact that she was always sent out on the missions…and always came back. They always relied on her to be there.

As one of the few girls they knew in SOLDIER, she often took the brunt of their flirtations. It was always done in good fun. The truth was…They were always scared. That’s the real reason why she put up with it. She was scared too sometimes. The attention made her feel good about herself. In a LOVELESS world it was something they all needed.

They began to chuckle and laugh as they eased the tension with each other. She smiled…her face muscles were sore…it was an expression she hadn’t made in a long time. She had almost forgotten how. The door swung open and a man walked in. Another lowly SOLDIER like them, but the way he walked in meant that he was on orders.

”3rd class SOLDIER Jackie, you are ordered to report to Commander Justin.” She stood up and gave a quick SOLDIER salute confirming the orders. She immediately left. The boys knew to leave her alone. They had long since Learned that Jackie could be just…well a pain in the ass when it came to orders and missions.

This girl was completely serious.

She walked down the hall with the other SOLDIER that had been sent to get her. They took a left at the second turn and followed the West wing towards the Commander’s office. The nameless fellow whom had been sent to fetch her stood with his back to the wall. His face was unmoving. No hints from him. She knocked on the door. Once. ”Enter.” She opened the door and walked in a step, and saluted. ”3rd Class SOLDIER Jackie, reporting as ordered sir!” She bellowed to the man sitting at the desk.

”Miss Jackie…I’ve been waiting for you.” The man said, returning her salute casually. At ease. Jackie let her posture falter, but not too much. This was still official business. ”Here is your assignment.” Commander Justin handed her a folder. She opened it and began to look through it as the Commander stood up with his back facing toward her.

”You are being assigned temporally assigned to Dorado Group. You are to report to the Helipad at 0400.” Jackie looked through the pages of the file. She was going to be assigned to provide Cover for the members of Dorado group. She was also being ordered to perform a hit on Someone in Costa del Sol. She looked at the picture that went with the file. It was…

”S-sir!” She said shocked at the picture. She showed the commander the picture. ”Don’t you know who this man is?” Commander Justin only looked at the photo once. ”I do actually. His name is Mr. Jalapeno. He runs a massuest parlor that doubles as a whore house. He’s been black mailing Executive members of SHINRA in the recent days, and must be eliminated.” He knew who Mr. Jalapeno was, but he didn’t know her connection to him it seemed. She gulped deeply.

”He’s my…Adopted father.” she said. ”Father? Your file states that you have no registered father.” She shook her head, ”Not officially.” Justin nodded his head gravely. ”There isn’t anyone else that can do this. I’m guessing he won’t accept you back home since he knows we’re sending someone to kill him.” Justin rubbed his chin. ”I’m sorry, you’re going to have to do it.”

Jackie nodded gravely. Who did she owe more loyalty to? Her adopted father whom had given her a chance at life? He had provided for her and lifted her up enough for her to get into SOLDIER in the first place, or did she owe it to SHINRA? SHINRA had saved her life twice now. Was the price of her life capable of balancing the weight of her love for her father?

”I don’t know…If I can do this sir.” She said shaking. Justin frowned and sat down. ”I’ve already informed you about this mission. It’s very sensitive material.” Justin said. ”Please don’t make me do something to you Jackie…” Jackie nodded. ”Understood.” she wiped the tears from her eyes. She had to destroy all emotion. Eliminate all connection to this man.

It would be hard.

It was rare that a bastard like her got such a chance. Her mother had been a whore and had had very little time for her. It hurt her inside to think of the many nights some fellow was busying himself between her legs. She really hated men that did such things. What would happen to her mother if she did Kill Mr. Jalapeno? The woman worked for him…he provided for all the whores there.

What would happen to them…She shook her head and realized that what happened didn’t matter. If she didn’t do it, someone else would. At least…At least Jackie would try to make it so his death would be the least painful as possible.

”Orders Understood sir!” She said, saluting. Justin casually saluted her, ”Dismissed SOLDIER.” He said to her. She turned and walked out the door. Sure Mr. Jalapeno was not her real father…but he was just like family to her. All of the women there were her family. Someone from the outside couldn’t understand how close they all had been. Mr. Jalapeno gave the products of his girls a chance to pick what kind of life they wanted.

He was more than happy to welcome any girl who wanted to live with somebody between her legs. He was just as happy to help that same girl get to Midgar. Mr. Jalapeno may have been a cheating con man, but he was an honorable cheating con man. If she had been anybody else she might have been glad to take out a major crime lord in Costa del Sol. Yet…she was that girl. The one who had that connection.

She would have to be up early…she went straight to her room, set the alarm for 0400 and collapsed. She didn’t even bother to change the clothes she was wearing, or to throw off her boots even.

Her night was interrupted by the annoying sound of that same alarm she had set…Curse that device, and curse the Commander for not giving her the orders earlier so she could get more rest. She got up, rubbing her eyes, and hit the alarm. She still didn’t change her clothes. She had long since learn there was little point to smelling like flowers on the battlefield. It didn’t matter what position you were…even if you were a sniper: you walked away smelling like blood.

It would be easier to take a shower afterwards…at least the smell of gun oil smelt…comforting. She grabbed the gun created by Markus Sword and threw it over her shoulder as she made her way down to the helipad. The chopper was already there, as well as Dorado group…early birds… It was still dark out in the sky, but she knew that by the time they got there it would be midday. Costa Del Sol was on another continent entirely.

She saw a couple of familiar faces…one of him was John from the Recreational room. ”I didn’t know you were in Dorado Group.” She told him over the roar of the propeller. ”I didn’t either.” He laughed. ”Come on!” He yelled to her, helping her into the chopper. She let him be a gentleman; she could have easily climbed in by herself.

Jackie dealt with the sound for the entire trip. She sat by a window with the rifle between her legs as land and ocean past by. Costa del Sol…it was the place she had grown up. Looking back on her past she knew all of the sniper positions that she figured would be useful to her. There were certain buildings she had in mind…She remembered seeing them from her window when Mr. Jalapeno had come to tuck her into bed at night.
”Aww…get that out from between your legs.” John said, referring to her rifle, ”It makes me feel inadequate.” He told Jackie. ”Psh…shut up ‘J’.” she laughed it off, using the name she had given him. One of the guys nudged John in the ribs, ”Hey, what was all that moaning last night, eh ‘J’? You two seem really close lately.” John laughed heartily over the sound of the chopper blades slicing through the air. ”I gave Jackie a good pounding last night, she couldn’t keep it in!” He exclaimed proudly.

”H…” She didn’t know what to say…Her feelings were really hurt. She was on the verge of tears…how could her treat her like that? She wasn’t some cheap two cent whore he could pick up off the street. ”How dare you?” She managed to put out. She turned her head from Jonathan…this was taking too far. WAY too far. She looked out the window to keep the fact that she was crying a secret.

She was soundless as the tears streamed down her face…She could see John’s reflection in the window… ”Jackie…” He said, reaching out to her. His head graced her shoulder, she knocked it off. He sat back in his seat…the insensitive was trying to figure out what had he done. ”Hahha, you made her cry.” One of the other guys was saying. Jackie wiped her tears. ”Shut the hell up.” She said without a single drop of emotion.

The tears were going down her face, but she was stone now. The rest of the trip was made in silence. When they were nearing the drop point, the pilot looked over his shoulder and began to give them instructions. ”When we near the drop point, Make sure your lines are secure. Attach this buckle to your belts before you jump out of the chopper.” The co pilot gave a slight demonstration. He showed them all how to buckle the line to their belts.

This was standard procedure for drops as far as Jackie could remember. No one questioned the man showing them the instructions. They never did. They had to be shown since there were new people on board. Everyone nodded at the completion of the demonstration. The co pilot moved back to the front and all the Members of Dorado Group buckled their belts to the lines. ”One at a time.” John instructed them.

It took a full minute for the Helicopter to reach the clearing, the vehicle lowered a bit and the SOLDIERs began to jump out one by one. Once they had hit the ground, they unbuckled their belts and the line zipped back into the helicopter. It finally came to be Jackie’s turn. She hopped out of the helicopter, feeling the wind blow through her hair as she zoomed down the strip.

She unbuckled the line and looked up as it whipped itself back up into the helicopter. Zzzpp! The Helicopter took off, returning to a higher elevation and heading towards the closest SHINRA helipad. They were on the ground now…They couldn’t move into Costa Del Sol without Mr. Jalapeno knowing. Jackie knew this…her adopted father had always boasted of such things to her.

By her estimation she must have been at least three kilometers away from the port. She looked to John for orders since he seemed to be the senior officer of Dorado group. The fellow looked around at his men but especially at her. She saw him wanting to say something. He said nothing.

“Alright gents, here’s the plan: we’ll separate and enter the port individually at different points.” He squatted down and began to draw in the dirt. It was a crude map, but it was good enough to work with. They certainly would have to make do. “Once inside, each unit will proceed to la Casa de Sol, Jackie you will take a sniper position on this building – our informants tell us that they are probably going to be expecting us to utilize certain positions as sniper points.” He pointed at several locations on the map, indicating the “certain points”.

”I believe there to be a mole in our command, so that’s why our mission is going to operate a tad different from what we have been ordered.” everyone nodded. They all understood. This was dangerous Business. Jackie kicked the dirt map on the ground and they all began to move without any orders to do so.

She made her way along the coast; similarly each member of Dorado group went their own ways. All with a common goal. Jackie climbed up a cliff side. Her purpose wasn’t to find a way into Costa del Sol but it was to find a quiet place to be for a moment. She sat in a small cave like structure feeling betrayed by everything.

‘J’ had abused her, her feelings betrayed her, and her loyalties seemed confused. What was she going to do? Would she really kill her own father, even if he was only an adoptive one at that? She dropped her rifle and curled up in this place where no one could see her. No one would see her cry here…

”You’re such a girl.” she told herself as the tears broke down her face. What was she supposed to be? Shinra wanted a SOLDIER. ‘J’ and the rest of the guys wanted a woman. Her father had wanted a son. It was confusing…what did she want? Who did she want to be? She thought about everything Mr. Jalapeno had done for her…everything Shinra had done for her.

Either could have ruined her life if they had wanted to. She could have just as easily been a whore or dead on a whim of either. She had been lucky though. She managed to survive this long…she managed to make it this far. Was this the point where she stopped living for others and lived for herself? If that was the case, then it was the selfish path she would take.

Despite all of her confusion, she was determined to kill Mr. Jalapeno herself. She recalled being a small girl and saying her goodbyes to her mother and Mr. Jalapeno. He had funded her trip to Midgar. Sent her there on a luxury Yacht, an experience she would never have again. She cleared her eyes of tears and took a deep breath.

She checked her cell phone for the time…she was going to be late. She had spent too long! She got up and grabbed her rifle, slinging it over her shoulders. She pulled a bullet from its carton and put it in her mouth. She made her way through the beautiful beach of this coast. The waves crashed so softly against the sand…it was perfect.

The calm always came before the storm.

Where else could you find such beauty on this land underneath the sun though? Midgar didn’t have this beauty, but this place…was it really beautiful either? It wore a mask that hid its true wickedness from the world. Wasn’t it more evil to hide what you really are? Wasn’t evil that posed as good the most false? She needed a better reason to kill her adopted father… a better reason… it wasn’t good enough for her to simply kill the man because the brass said so.

Wasn’t it enough? She had been given a second chance at life. This was her second, second chance.

There was Costa del Sol in the distance. She moved forward in all stealth she could manage. She pulled herself over a wall and dropped down onto the street of the beautiful port. She was home. She remembered playing in this very street with all the other bastards. Of all of them, she was the only girl that didn’t end up as a prostitute.

Of all of them, she was the only one to make it to Midgar. Of all of them, it was she alone whom had became a member of SOLDIER. An elite, if you will. She was above the common of this city. Of all of them, she was the only one to escape certain destitution.

It just so happened that when she peaked around the corner of the alley she saw on of the boys she had grown up with. ”Jackie?” he asked, ”Jackie! Oh my god…its so good to see you again!” She snapped his neck. He had let down his guard and now he was dead with a quick flick. Thump. His name had been Sean.

What had she done? She pressed a soft hand at his face before dragging his body into the alley. She checked the street for anyone else before proceeding towards her position. She opened the door to a conveniently empty building. The SOLDIER made her way up the stairs to the roof and set up shop there. She set her rifle on the ledge of the roof and looked into the scope. Where were they? There was no sign of any action taking place.

If the other SOLDIERs had at least made it into town then there should at least be some – the door behind her opened. She jumped and pointed her rifle at the shadow moving out from the stairs. ”Jackie?” The voice called to her. It was Mr. Jalapeno himself…He was in her sights...pull the trigger damn you.

The rifle shook but did not fire as Mr. Jalapeno made an unconcerned approach. He completely ignored the fact that she was pointing a gun at him.”My favorite daughter! Welcome Home!” He said, pushing her rifle to the side so he could embrace her. ”I’m glad you were a little late.” The man stroked her hair lovingly. ”My men would have shot you with the others…” He told her, his face looked pained. He turned to the stairs and pointed.

She looked and saw several of Mr. Jalapeno’s thugs bring bodies up the stairs…They dropped the members of Dorado group onto the ground in front of her. She couldn’t bare to look at all of their faces…she turned her head away. Jalapeno ran his hand down her cheek. ”But, shhh….It’ll be okay now. You’re home.” He told her.

”But daddy…I…Have to kill you.” She said, moving away from him and pointing the rifle at him. His face looked unfazed. ”I’d gladly die for you dear heart.” He held out his arms…willing to take a bullet from her gun. ”What about Shinra?” Jackie cried. Jalapeno took the rifle gently away from her and handed it to one of the faceless cronies there.

”I dealt with them didn’t I?” he said pointing at the dead SOLDIERs. Jackie still wouldn’t look. Some of those people had been her friends. She was mad about their deaths but…this was her father…how could you hate someone who had done so much for you? ”Come on, your mother and siblings would love to see you again.”

”How…many…?” She gulped to herself. ”You have 7 brothers and 5 sisters now!” Jalapeno said. ”You’re the oldest one! They are all dying to know you!” Jalapeno took Jackie’s arm and linked his arm with hers. He guided her down the stairs and through the streets back to her first home. La Casa de Sol.

She had been sat down aside Mr. Jalapeno at a table as a feast was laid out before them. Her mother walked into the room and sat beside Mr. Jalapeno…she looked very happy…and pregnant. ”Again…?” Her mother laughed at the response and shook her head, ”What do you mean again? You’re a bastard yourself you know.” The woman told her.

That hurt. Jackie flinched at the pain those words gave her.

”This one is Jalapeno’s.” She said. She leaned close to the man…”I finally have a man…” She had had plenty of men, at least that was what Jackie’s cruel thoughts told her. Jackie took a moment to meet her new Siblings…the ones she had left had all aged several years. Her brothers had become thugs mostly…and her sisters…they had become whores.

Why had only she been given this chance? Why did Jalapeno keep them all around?

”Lets eat!” Called Mr. Jalapeno when the feast had finally been set up. Jackie’s dish was very fine cuisine. She had received a plate of Lemon peppered salmon with potatoes and green beans as sides. She also had a basket of small butter rolls that were centered around a small bowl of cinnamon cream cheese spread. Even the cutlery was overly fine, it was all made of gold and studded with rubies.

A little gaudy.

She had never eaten so well before though. She held out her glass and immediately it was filled with Mr. Jalapeno’s very strange orange based wine. It was very sweet with just a right amount of sourness to it. It also gave her a very satisfying buzz. She had never been so happy in her life she thought… Why was she so happy? What was wrong here? She couldn’t stop drinking and enjoying herself with her family.

Everyone got up from the feast and began to go about their own doings…this wasn’t her home anymore. Now that she was back she knew for sure…She was a SOLDIER now. Jackie pulled out the spare gun she had gotten from John a few days before. She walked into the hallway and shot her father, he died with a peaceful look on his face. His words echoed in his head.

Her face was a stone as she made her escape. As she made her way down the hall she saw her mother. The woman was holding Jackie’s rifle to her own head. ”Why Jackie?” she asked before pulling the trigger. Jackie flinched as it happened. She ran over to her mother and shook her head angrily. ”I should ask you the same question…” she said to the dead woman. She picked up her rifle and threw it over her shoulder.

”Get HER! She killed the boss!” Some men screamed. They began to chase after her, firing whenever they caught so much as a glimpse of her around the corner. Jackie pulled around a corner and waited for the thugs to catch up. When they did, she popped out and opened fire on them. Bam bam bam! Three shots, two hits. One dead. The two left continued to run after her. She ran into more security and quickly ducked left down another hallway. There was a window at the end of the way. She jumped through the glass and flew through the air.

Her feet hit the concrete just in time to see the heads of many of the thugs look at the window. She turned and began to fire at them as she ran. ”This is 3rd Class SOLDIER Jackie.” The woman yelled into her cell phone. ”Target eliminated, Dorado Group down. Moving towards rendezvous point. ” She was running from building to building, taking what little cover she could until she hit the city limits.

”Roger that Jackie, we’ll be there in five.” The pilot’s voice called back to her through the phone.

She felt a bullet eat its way into her arm. She winced at the pain, but she had already known pain. Emotionally she had taken the most pain possible. Physically she had already died before. Twice actually. That pretty much said she was tough as any machine could be. Her muscle toned body carried her onward and onward as she returned fire while she was running. A man walking down the street died… He had nothing to do with this.

She had been cornered though. She was at the clearing now, and yet some thugs had still managed to follow her. John’s gun was out of ammo so she tossed it and pulled out her sniper rifle. She took aim and tried to keep the men pinned down. She shot one in the arm, and killed another with a head shot.

”Damn it…” She said to herself for almost no reason when the helicopter came and unloaded a successful round of suppressive minigun fire. Jackie ran towards the chopper and grabbed onto the side, one of the people inside pulled her in as it took off. ’I’m never going to come back here again.’ she told herself as she watch Costa De Sol fade into the distance.

When she had finally made it back to base in Midgar, she had relayed most of the mission to the brass. Some informant in the brass had been caught and was being put through trial…Jackie couldn’t cry though. So many of the people she had learned to love had died. It was better this way. It really was.

That’s what she had convinced herself. ”Good work 3rd Class SOLDIER.” Commander Justin was telling her. ”You deserve an award.” Jackie pulled her rifle on Justin. ”What’s the meaning of this?” Jackie looked at him angrily as each of Dorado Group’s face flashed in her eyes.

” ‘J’ said there was a mole in the brass. You’re the mole.” She told him. ”Now Jackie…I had nothing to do with Dorado group being ambushed at Costa del Sol…” Jackie thwacked him with the butt of the gun. Justin hit the floor. She cocked the rifle. ”You bastard. You killed all my friends and family in the same mission.” Justin smiled. ”Actually…you’re the bastard, and you killed your friends and family.”

Justin pulled out his own gun from his shirt. Jackie shot him in the heart.
