Basics of Chakra

What is Chakra?

Chakra is a type of energy. Just like how your body beaks down food to create energy for your body, the energy that is not used up is converted in to chakra within the body. Not much is known about it other than it is a very malleable power source that can do quite a few things, given training. It is housed in small chakra tubes that run all throughout the body in what is called the chakra circulatory network. It is released through 361 tenketsu points, points in the body where the chakra system has an outlet to the work. Usually, the only ones humans can actively manipulate are in their hands and feet.

Chakra is usually made during sleep or resting periods, however your body’s energy can be forcefully converted in to chakra, just not very efficiently. It takes practice to harness this skill however.

Chakra is found in every vertebrate. There is no evidence of a chakra system in anything lower than that.

How is it regulated?

There are eight chakra gates that control the flow of chakra through the body. Open, Energy, Life, Wound, Forest, View, Insanity and Death gate. Each controls flow to a certain part of the body. These can be opened and upon doing so cause the body to change its normal processes. However it is very dangerous as the increased flow of chakra uses up quite a bit of energy and can do damage to the body. Your body works harder but due to that overcompensates on the amount of energy needed to keep up those functions and uses much more than necessary.

What can it do?

Chakra, in and of itself, is just energy. The only way it can be used is if it is channeled through a medium. This medium can be your body; however it can also be an element, leading to why most jutsu are elemental. When channeled through the body, it is intrinsically linked to the body. Non-elemental jutsu such as the Rasengan cannot leave the hand or else they will dissipate and things such as chakra blades cannot extend very far past the body without requiring a huge influx of chakra to keep it at that size. Things such as water walking and wall walking require very precise control of the chakra in order for it to allow to them to stay connected, and require direct contact with a solid or liquid.

What can’t it do?

Chakra is not a magical fix all. Without an elemental or physical catalyst, it cannot do anything. Things such as walking on air, repairing items, and others require specific elemental catalysts to do so. Simply trying to get chakra to magically seal two pieces of metal together or form platforms under your feet won’t work. In order for it to work, you need the elemental catalyst, either metal or wind in the cases stated above. Attempting to throw a chakra bomb will not work as the chakra will diffuse out in to the outside environment before it gets anywhere. The most important part of chakra is the catalyst.

How much do I have?

Every human adult’s body has about the same amount of chakra. It might vary slightly with body size, however the variance is pretty much indifferent.

Can I increase it?

Yes. There are a variety of ways, however the main problem is how to house more chakra in a system of a limited size. So you must have storage of some capacity. Beyond that, the rest is up to you.

How is it manipulated?

Chakra is manipulated in one of two ways, Shape and Nature. Shape Manipulation involves taking chakra, such as lightning chakra, and manipulating the shape or movement of it to your will. Moves such as the Rasengan and Ninja Puppetry are perfect examples, taking pure chakra and shaping it, moving it and controlling it.

Nature Manipulation involves taking normal chakra and manipulating it to a certain elemental nature. Every single elemental jutsu is created via this type of manipulation. People have affinity towards one element, that is their main element. However, beyond that element, you can use Nature Manipulation to manipulate that chakra in to different natures, allowing different elements to be used. Using Nature Manipulation, you take chakra and create elemental chakra. This can be used to create techniques such as Water Wall that do not require an actual form to use.

Each of the five elemental natures has a different basis. Wind Release focuses on cutting, creating very thin and very sharp chakra. Fire Release focuses on consuming, creating a very wide spread, powerful chakra. Water Release focuses on changing, having the chakra take various forms. Lightning Release focuses on penetrating, creating a chakra that moves from one point to another, bypassing defenses. Earth Release focuses on solidifying, creating form and structure where there wasn't before.

When used together, Shape and Nature Manipulation can create some of the strongest jutsu possible, jutsu such as Chidori or the Water Dragon Technique. Nature Manipulation and Shape Manipulation is actually easier for some elements than others. Water Release is the most natural of the two to be combined, the very chakra nature of the element facilitating Shape Manipulation. Earth Release is next, being only a small amount harder, however still being easily manipulated. Fire Release, Wind Release and Lightning Release are all grouped together far from the other two as being very difficult. As they are energy, it is almost impossible to form them in to shape without a large amount of practice. However, when put together, they tend to be much more powerful offensively than Water Release or Earth Release.

In The Game

Above is the general explanation for chakra. For those not interested, in game there are just some basic things to understand that can be taken from above.

Amount

Everyone in the RPG effectively has 50 chakra, no matter what the age. That is the 'average' amount in humans. This can be increased, but you have to be creative and find a way to store the extra chakra. If you somehow make more chakra than you can store, you will get an 'aura' of it around you and will effectively have 3 turns to get rid of it before you lose all of it.

Losing it

You're out of chakra, your body is out of 'extra energy'. If you run out of stamina, your body will start converting chakra in to it, however not vice versa, at least not normally. Normally, once you hit 0 stamina, you will release 1 chakra for every stamina regained. It's a horrible ratio, but it's not supposed to be good. If you run out of both, you're dead. Your body cannot function anymore as it's stamina is gone and it's backup energy is completely depleted so it can't make anymore.

Molding it

Unless you have a medium, chakra stays connected to the body. The more complex, the closer it has to be. Chakra strings are not very complex, thus they have a good range. Rasengan or chakra blades? Very complex, turning energy in to something physical, require almost complete contact with body. Chakra in and of itself is simply energy. Making it something beyond that is hard. Normal chakra strings only manipulate specially made puppets. If you want them to manipulate things other than that, it requires a whole new way of doing it.

Also, making chakra in to an element, elemental manipulation, and making chakra in to a shape, such as with Rasengan, are easier than doing both together. Most all jutsu require both, however ones such as Rain Summoning only require elemental and Rasengan only require shape. These are not skills, however these things -will- be considered in determining the cost of a jutsu or ability.
