Let The Light Surround You
|
“You’re good at getting knocked on your ass, kid.” Nevis shot LaMoore the nastiest look he could muster and tapped the bridge of his nose gingerly, wincing in pain at that simple action. He still hadn’t fully recovered from taking a brick of ice to the face, but he was getting there. Shortly after his match with Nex had ended, the members of Majesty that had been watching the bout recovered their fallen comrade and brought them back to their headquarters so he could recover. It had only been a few hours, but he was almost totally healed up. Of course, a Potion helped things along. “Well, now we know what you can do…but you’re a little too compassionate.” The leader of Majesty sat down and shook his head at his newest recruit, scratching at the back of his neck. “Why didn’t you attack that girl?” “She couldn’t see,” the scavenger replied, staring at his new boss. “If I’d hit her with everything I had, she would have been hurt.” “We hurt people if we have to, kid. When it comes down to it, can I count on you?” Again, he was met with silence. Ryan simply got to his feet and exited the room, leaving LaMoore by himself. He knew that Nevis hated him, but he was sure that the kid would come around eventually. Besides, he knew about Oasis. If Ryan wanted answers about the girl, he would have to play ball. The scavenger simply wandered the halls of Majesty’s base, not going anywhere in particular. It wasn’t a large place, basically amounting to a set of dorms, a meeting area, and a cafeteria. Aside from that, there was almost nothing. It was one of the most boring places he’d ever been, but it was his new home. He would just have to get used to it, at least until he found Oasis again. After that, he was going to tear LaMoore’s head off. Dammit…can’t believe I have to put up with this crap…soon as they tell me where Oasis is, I’m outta here… A strange noise caught his attention. Ryan paused and turned his head, quickly spotting the source of the sound. There was a frail looking girl with long black hair sitting in one of the dorm rooms, dragging a whetstone across the edge of a blade. She was methodical, almost machine like in her method, wearing a blank expression on her face. A few moments passed before she stopped sharpening her sword, looking up at him with ice cold eyes. “Can I help you,” she said, though it was more like a command than a question. Ryan blinked a few times before seeming to remember where he was. The scavenger shook his head and shrugged, not really sure what to say. The girl continued staring at him, still wearing that blank expression. Fuse couldn’t help but wonder if she was human or not. “…Sorry, I was just walking…” he said finally, slipping his hands out of his pockets. “Didn’t mean to int—“ Before he could complete that thought, the girl had the tip of her blade at his throat. Ryan’s body ceased up, and his eyes widened considerably. She was fast, frighteningly fast, and he knew that if he did anything other than breathe, he would lose his head. If he was careful, he could get out alive. He just wished he had thought to bring his disks with him. As it stood, he was almost totally helpless. “H-hey…” he said quietly, though he was unwilling to move aside from that. “Do ya think…you could get that away from my neck?” “Leave,” she said, her voice carrying an edge just as sharp as the blade she handled. “If I see you again, I will kill you.” “Hey hey…I’m kinda stuck with you guys for a while, so we’re gonna see each other again sometime…so could ya…Iunno…not kill me?” The girl narrowed her eyes at him and tensed up her muscles. In that instant, Ryan knew he had to act, or he would die right there. As he suspected, she pulled the sword back some, leaving him enough room to do what needed to be done. He leaped into the air, moving back as he did so and planting his feet on the wall behind him. The girl didn’t know what to make of that, which just made what he wanted to do that much easier. Even though he didn’t have his weapons with him, he was still more than capable of defending himself. He shoved himself off the wall and tackled the girl to the ground, disarming her in one swift motion. “H-hey!” she cried, showing some actual human emotion. “Get off me! Let me up!” “You gonna stab me if I do?” the scavenger asked, keeping the girl pinned to the ground. “Because I’m really not into that, ya know!” “Get off of me!” In spite of her struggles, she wasn’t making any headway. It seemed that she wasn’t all that strong. He would have to keep that in mind in case she tried this crap again. “P-please, let me up…I don’t know what she did, but it wasn’t me!” “Wasn’t y—what the hell are you talking about, of course it was you!” “N-no, please, listen! T-that was The M—“ Before she completed that sentence, Fuse was pulled back violently and pinned to the nearest wall by an extremely pissed off Stone. The scavenger blinked and instinctively ducked his head before the fist that was headed his way could connect. The bruiser’s punch impacted the wall and caused a few cracks to form. That was when Ryan decided that he didn’t want to make the big guy any angrier than he already was. “Whoa whoa whoa!” the scavenger shouted, doing his best to pacify Stone before he ended up with another scar on his face. “She came at me, all right?! I was just defending myself!” “Bullshit, kid!” Stone said, readying himself for another punch. “I find you on top of Victoria and you tell me you’re defending yourself?” “Stone, please!” the girl, Victoria, had gotten back to her feet and moved up beside Stone, placing a hand on the big man’s shoulder. “I think The Miracle might’ve done something to him…” “The who now?” Fuse blinked and looked down at Victoria, trying to figure what she was talking about. “Who the hell is The Miracle!? You came at me with a fuckin’ sword, lady! You tryin’ ta tell me that wasn’t you!?” It seemed that Stone bought her story, though. The big man released his grip, and Ryan fell to the ground, rubbing at his neck. Stone turned to the girl, shaking his head. “You know you’re supposed to lock your door when you’re alone, Victoria…you’re lucky you didn’t hurt him.” “I did lock the door…she must have opened it again…you know that she doesn’t like to be cramped up…” Ryan looked from Stone to Victoria and back a few times before piping up again. “Someone gonna tell me what the fuck’s goin’ on?” Stone sighed and rubbed at the bridge of his nose before walking away, leaving the scavenger alone with the girl. Fuse let out a quiet growl and pushed himself back to his feet, looking to Victoria for answers. The girl shook her head and wandered back into her room, shutting the door behind her. Ryan heard the lock slide into place. It seemed he wouldn’t be getting any information any time soon. The entire situation was so frustrating, but there wasn’t anything he could do about it. He would just have to put up with all the secrets for a while longer. Finally, he ended up in the dorm he had been assigned. It wasn’t exactly homey, but then again he wasn’t at home. All he really had was a bed, one with no sheets. Ryan stared at it with a look of disgust on his face before giving up and laying back on it. It was surprisingly comfortable, but he wasn’t one for resting. Oasis was out there somewhere, enduring god only knew what, while he was stuck in the middle of the desert working for a group that he knew nothing about. All in all, it had been a hell of a week, and it looked like things were only going to get worse from here. His relaxation was short lived, though. After only a few minutes, there was an annoying knock at his door. With an exasperated grunt, the scavenger sat up in time to see the door open. Cintron stuck his head into the room, his nose stuffed with tissue. It seemed he hadn’t yet recovered from getting his face pounded in by Ryan. Fuse could only chuckle at that, an act didn’t go unnoticed by the gunman. “Shut the hell up, kid…” Cintron muttered, tossing something toward Fuse. The scavenger snatched it out of the air and looked it over, blinking. It looked like a Materia, but he wasn’t sure why he’d been given it. Cintron didn’t offer any explanation either, at least not until Ryan looked up at him with a confused expression on his face. “And this is…what exactly?” “It’s Materia, retard,” Cintron snapped. “LaMoore told me to give it to you, and besides that, we got a job. C’mon, everyone else is in the cafeteria already.” Fuse stared blankly at the gunman before sighing quietly and getting to his feet, grabbing his weapons and slipping the Materia he’d just acquired into one of the empty slots. A bit of a head rush followed, but when it died down, Ryan suddenly found that he was aware of how to pick someone’s pocket and not be caught. “…Huh,” he said quietly, moving up behind Cintron and snagging one of his guns without him noticing. The scavenger chuckled quietly and moved in front of the gunman, offering him his stolen weapon. Cintron gaped at what he was seeing and grabbed his weapon, pointing it at Ryan’s forehead. “Don’t ever fuckin’ do that again, kid,” he growled, but Fuse wasn’t intimidated in the least. All he did was turn on his heel and start walking toward the cafeteria, ignoring Cintron’s swears. It looked like LaMoore had actually helped him for once. Whether or not that would be the trend remained to be seen. A few moments later, the both of them were in the designated meeting area. He recognized almost everyone in the room, save one new guy. He was clearly younger than everyone else, with spiky blond hair and an odd symbol tattooed on his cheek. In glancing around the room, Ryan realized that the symbol was all around the room. He could only assume that it was the group’s calling card, but he had no idea what the hell it meant. It looked like a circle with an M in the middle, along with a few other assorted lines. Fuse assumed it meant Majesty or some nonsense, but it didn’t make a lot of sense to him. “Glad you two could join us,” LaMoore said, looking more annoyed than usual. “Cintron, when I tell you to get someone, you get them.” “Yeah yeah…” the man in the bandana growled at Ryan, who only chuckled and grabbed an empty seat for himself. He knew he wouldn’t like what he was going to hear, but he was stuck with the group for the time being, so he would just have to make do. “All right, here’s the job,” LaMoore began, pointing to a picture on the wall. Everyone’s gaze fell on it, but the face in the photo didn’t ring any bells with anyone. It showed an older man, probably in his early fifties, but aside from that, he was completely unremarkable. “This is Eckehard Roly, a Shin-Ra scientist. We’re gonna kidnap him and deliver him to some people who’d…like to have a few words with him.” Ryan seemed to perk up at the mention of putting the hurt on someone associated with Shin-Ra. LaMoore picked up on that and glanced at his newest recruit, the faintest traces of a smile on his face. “That’s right, Fuse. We’re anti-Shin-Ra. Does that make the prospect of working with us any more appealing to you?” “A little,” the scavenger replied, leaning in some so he could get a better look at their target. “So what’d this guy do, anyway?” “Doesn’t matter,” the youngest member said, calling attention to himself rather loudly. “It’s what the client wants, so it’s what we’re gonna do, right LaMoore?” “Ryuichi, calm down. Fuse has a valid question.” “Hmph.” Ryuichi crossed his arms and slumped down in his chair. “Still doesn’t matter…” “Anyway,” continued LaMoore. “He’s responsible for some pretty nasty things. Seems he kidnapped some children from Nibelheim after it burned down and did some…well, it’s not really that important, suffice it to say that he’s a massive piece of shit. They finally found him a while back, so we’re gonna go get him.” “Sounds like a plan to me,” Ryan said, kicking back in his seat. “When do we start.” “It’s not gonna be that easy. It never is with jobs like this.” Fuse scoffed some and looked around the table, trying to get a read on everyone else’s thoughts. It seemed that they all agreed with LaMoore that the job would not be simple. The scavenger let out a sigh and got to his feet. “What’s the problem? He’s just one man, all we gotta do is get in, get him, get out, right?” “Kid, sit down and be quiet.” Stone was glaring at him, as was everyone else, it seemed. Ryan returned their gazes and finally took his seat again, resting his chin in the palm of his hand. As soon as he had settled down, LaMoore continued with the briefing. “Roly is pretty high profile, so he’ll probably have a security detail around him. He’s going to be moving from Rocket Town to Costa Del Sol in the next few days. We’re going to hit him here, in about the middle of their trip.” LaMoore emphasized his point by pointing at a map, indicating a completely empty area. “There won’t be any surprise reinforcements here, so all we’ll have to contend with will be whatever guards he has with him at the time. We take them out, get Roly, and deliver him to Nibelheim. You’ll all get a cut of what they’re paying us on completion of the job.” “Awrite!” Ryuichi pounded his fist into the palm of his hand, causing a surprisingly loud sound to echo throughout the room. “Looks like I got a reason ta start trainin’ again!” “All of you need to prepare for this the best you can. If we go in half-cocked, we’re all gonna die. Get it?” Everyone save Fuse responded with a resounding “Yes sir!” The scavenger blinked a few times at the show of order. It seemed that Majesty was pretty organized, and each member had an immense amount of respect for their leader. Ryan was starting to see why. LaMoore was a charismatic guy, after all. A few minor details later, everyone was dismissed, but LaMoore requested that the scavenger remained behind. As soon as the room was empty, the leader of Majesty sat down across from the new guy, looking him in the eye before he started speaking. “So, it seems you’re warming up to us.” “Hey, if you’re against Shin-Ra, I’ll help out, at least until I find Oasis again.” The older man chuckled quietly and ran a hand through his hair, leaning back in his seat. “You have a one track mind, Fuse. Can’t say that’s a bad thing, though. But tell me…why are you chasing after her?” Ryan really didn’t have an answer for him since he really had no idea why he was going through all of this himself. Still, he got the feeling LaMoore was expecting an answer, so he decided to give him one. “I have no fuckin’ idea. Does it matter, though?” LaMoore had to laugh at the bluntness of the statement. “All right, all right…tell you what. After this job, we’ll go find her.” He was unaccustomed to such kindness. Every time he did a job for Gene, all he got was a bunch of bullshit and barely enough gil to compensate him. It was an annoying situation, but it seemed like things here might be better for him. A few seconds later, Ryan nodded to his new boss and got to his feet. “I’m gonna get some rest…” the scavenger said. “All right. Go ahead.” With that, Fuse left the cafeteria and wandered back to his dorm, falling back onto his bed and staring up at the ceiling. Just one job and he would be on his way to finding Oasis. He could live with that. Just hold on a little longer…I’ll find you again, I swear it. Before he knew it, he had fallen into a dreamless sleep. The stress of the past few days had finally caught up with him, and his body simply shut itself down. Even though he wasn’t home, he felt oddly comfortable. Maybe things would end up working out after all. |
