Did you know that L's love donuts?
A small dust cloud traveled across the desert floor, if you looked closer you would be able to see that it wasn’t a cloud but it was in fact an automobile. Specifically you’d see an ugly green truck, its bed full of crates of tools and farming equipment and a few chickens, the Latino driver was singing the same loud nonsense song he had been singing for the past two hours. His traveling companion lying in the bed knocked on the back window and yawned. “Hey! Some of us are trying to sleep back here.” The driver reached back and slid open the window, careful not to take his eyes off the non-existent road before him. “Sorry about that vato. It’s the only song I know in English.” He called back.

Kamina sighed and shifted his body and tried to get comfortable in the truck bed. “Then turn on the radio or something.” He called to the driver and closed his eyes once more. “Fine fine.” The driver replied. “Ya know, you’ll age faster with that kind of attitude kid.” He flipped on the radio and switched channels until he found some upbeat mariachi music. It wasn’t long before Kamina was snoring in the back and the man up front was once again singing loudly. He would have slept all the way to Costa Des Sol, so long as the truck didn’t hit anything. But as hate would have it, at that moment the truck rolled over a rather large rock, causing the back to buck and toss Kamina out and onto the sandy ground. The driver kept singing, oblivious to his lost passenger. And Kamina lay sleeping on the ground of the desert as his only ride out of the wasteland drove off into the horizon.

Six hours later, at high noon, a buzzard began to peck on Kamina’s head. He woke up slightly and swatted at the bird, forcing it to fly away and circle above his head. He sat up and looked around. “Wha? Where did the truck go?” It took a minute for realization to dawn on Kamina, causing him to face palm at once. “Fuck. I must have fallen off. And that fool left me here.” He stood and looked around him to try and find a land mark. All he could see was sand, sand, a few cactuses, and more sand. He opened his mind to the others in the area, but all he found were animal minds. The instinct to survive was all there was in this land, he felt it from the creatures around him and within himself. The closest human mind was at the very fringe of his mind. “West…or East…damn it!” Kamina kicked a rock in front of him and watched it lunch off the ground and kick up dust as it landed. He sighed and sat on the ground and thought.

“If I stay I’ll die of dehydration. If I try and walk…I’ll die of dehydration before I can reach civilization.” He crossed his arms and rubbed his chin. He stopped and nodded to himself. “Yes that’ll settle it.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a Gill coin. He tossed it into the air and watched it land on the ground, heads up. Kamina smiled a bit and stood up, grabbing the coin. “Then it’s settled, I’ll find my way to a town.” He took off his equipment and redid his jacket around his waist before fixing his sword and gun on his waist. “The journey of a thousand miles…” He let the quote float and began to walk away from the sun, to the east.

The sun beat down on him the longer he walked on. His muscles ached but he pushed them to go on. His arms hung limply and his back hunched slightly. The sun was slowly setting but Kamina was sure he’d be finished before the cool night came. He fell face first into the dirt and sighed. “Damn it. How long have I been going?” He heard buzzards above him cawing and growled slightly. “Shut up. You bastard birds,” He pushed himself up a little. “are going to have to find another meal.” He got up on one knee, panting a little. “This clone is out of here.” He tried to stand but his legs gave out and cause him to fall face first onto the ground once more. “…fuck…”

He looked up at the horizon and saw a rider on a chocobo coming closer towards him. “A mirage? Or…” he found the will to get up onto his feet as the rider got closer to him. Whoever it was, they were covered from head to toe. All he could see was a pair of feminine eyes looking down at him. “You’re a…girl?” Kamina chuckled and fell back, passed out. The woman grabbed got off her chocobo and picked him up and tossing him onto the back of the giant yellow bird. She then turned around and took the young man with her.

It would be a few hours before Kamina woke up. He looked around him…he was at a camp. A fire burned brightly in front of him, he tried to sit up but was too weak. The girl that picked him up poked her head out of a tent and came out to stand over him. He looked up at her. She had short, blue hair and hazel eyes. He opened his mouth to say something but his throat was too dry to speak. The girl cocked her head to the side but then smacked it as if remembering something. She disappeared back into her tent and came back out with a gourd. She sat down next to Kamina and poured the liquid inside down his throat. Kamina quickly sat up and snatched the gourd and started gulping down the liquid inside.

The girl sat back on a rock and watched him drink. “I’m guessing you haven’t had anything to wet your whistle in a while, friend.” Kamina looked at the woman and tossed the gourd. “Thanks. You saved my life.” The woman caught it and took a long swig. “Nay, you were not destined to die here, that much I know.” She tossed Kamina back the bottle and he drank from it. “What do you mean?” He tried to read her mind but something blocked him. In fact, he couldn’t hear thoughts from anything at the moment. He noted that fact in the back of his mind. “I know these types of things.” The woman spoke up. Kamina didn’t bother asking how she knew; if he did it’d just lead to some tragic back story. And he didn’t have time for that shit today. He took another long drink from the gourd and tossed it back to the woman, this time standing up to test his balance.

It was at this time Kamina noticed something amiss…well maybe that wasn’t the right word. It was more like something was missing. He patted himself down and looked around the area where he’d been sleeping. His weapons were gone. He glared at the woman who just sat there drinking. “Alright, come clean.” She looked at him but remained silent. “What do you mean?” She spoke innocently; he almost believed she didn’t know. Almost. “I want my weapons. My sword, Shade. And my gun, Shine.” The woman chuckled and stood up to face him. “Your blade carries the stench of death on it. The same with your fire arm.” Kamina narrowed his eyes as she continued. “You claimed both of them from the dead and used them as your own. And now, they have been taken to the world beyond this one. The Life Stream.”

Kamina stood there dumb struck. How could she know about his past? He didn’t even tell Angeles and Saeta about it. He trembled slightly; it was like having his own power turned back on him. He took at step towards her but hesitated. “H-how do you know all this? Who…what are you?” The woman rose and walked up to him. “I am the one sent to open the door way for you, Kamina Yukari.” She grabbed his wrist forcefully and placed something in his hand, placing something in it and closing it after doing so. She let go of Kamina’s hand and looked into his eyes. “If you want to reclaim your weapons the use this to open the path, go into the Life Stream and take them back.” Kamina looked down at his hand and opened it. Inside were two pieces of a gold scarab beetle. Kamina took a piece in each hand and held them up to his face. “Consider this carefully, once you’re in you cannot leave without your weapons.” Kamina frowned and shook his head. “Do I have a choice? I can’t go on without them.”

He took a breath and put the pieces together and completed the scarab, but nothing happened. Kamina pulled the parts apart and put them back together again, but still nothing happened. He tried once more and let the full beetle sit in his hand. “Nothing’s happening…” He looked up at the woman to see her dissolving into sand and blowing away. “Be strong Kamina Yukari.” He reached out to her. “Wait! Tell me what to do! Don’t go yet!” She smiled faintly and reached out to him as her arm dissolved too. “I was glad to meet you, so very glad.” She smiled softly and dissolved away completely. Kamina felt a tear escape his eye, there was a pain in his heart, somewhere deep down he knew here. Something instinctual hurt when she was gone. “Who…were you?” Kamina’s tear trailed down his face and dripped onto the scarab causing it to glow with a blinding light.

The scarab began to burn Kamina’s hand, prompting him to toss it into the air. Instead of falling to the ground like the metal work it was the beetle floated in the air. No, that wasn’t the right word. It was…flying. The wings on its back were flapping and keeping it air born, like a living beetle. Kamina reached forward for the golden scarab but before he could grab it the beetle flew away from him and out into the desert, leaving a trail of golden dust behind. Kamina rushed forward but the scarab was moving too fast, he’d never be able to catch it on foot.

He chased the beetle but it was edging away from him, soon it’d be gone from sight and gone forever. A wark sounded behind him and Kamina looked behind himself to see the woman’s Chocobo charging towards him. He grabbed onto the bird’s reins as it passed by and pulled himself up in to the saddle. With his new mount he gave chase after the scarab. Now he could at least keep up with it.

Kamina chased the beetle across the desert, never able to catch it, always trailing just out of reach. He reached a hand out in front of the Chocobo and tried to grab the scarab before it got away from him. Before he could grab it the bug sped forward with a sudden burst and split in two again. Kamina’s Chocobo stopped with a loud wark as the two halves began to circle around each other, causing a whirlwind of sand to form between them. He looked on as the sand in the middle of the beetle pieces began to take form and shape. The sand rose up in the shape of a lion’s head, sans mane. The scarab halves came to rest and glow where the lion’s eyes should be. The head shook and glared down at Kamina. “Who disturbs my slumber?” It asked in a deep, rumbling voice.

The Chocobo started backing off but Kamina rubbed his beak to assuage him….at least he assumed it was a male. He looked up at the talking cave and gulped. With a sigh to steady himself he sat up tall on his mount and looked the beast before him in the eyes. “It was I, Kamina Yukari. Thought I did not know my actions would result in awakening you.” He bowed slightly and looked back up at the cave. “Only those who wish to enter the world where the dead live can awaken me.” It glared down at Kamina. “What business do you have in the next world?”

Kamina got off his Chocobo and looked up at the talking head. “There is something important of mine trapped there. I must retrieve it.” The cave gave a rumbling laugh. “And you would brave death to get it?” Kamina stood his ground and shook his head. “I can’t go on without it. I have no choice.” The cave laughed once more. “There is always a choice. But if you must.” It gave a loud yawn and opened its mouth wide. Inside there was a swirling vortex of green Mako. “Enter if you dare.” Kamina walked forward and reached a hand tentatively into the vortex. It felt…warm, almost inviting. He pushed his hand a little further in and felt something scratching at the back of his mind.

Kamina closed his eyes and focused on the feeling. Images flashed in his head, too sporadic for him to understand them. He dug deeper into his mind and forced the images to slow down in his head. His pupils dilated as a memory began to play like a movie in his head.

Inside Kamina’s head:

He was in a lab, grey and dingy. There was a pregnant woman on an operating table screaming, a doctor was down at her spread legs delivering her child. Kamina moved forward and looked down at the woman. She looked like the same woman who saved him from dying in the desert, only her face held more color, and it wasn’t just the flush in her face. She looked more alive than before. Sweat glistened on her face as she gritted her teeth and gave a good push of her lower muscles. He reached out and tried to stroke her cheek, only to have his hand go through her face.

“I can’t touch her…is this all…an illusion. No, something else…but how?” He moved down to her legs, which were propped up and spread open. A man in a white lab coat was doing something Kamina couldn’t quite see. The woman gave another yell and watched the doctor stand up and wrap something in a blanket, something that was crying. After a moment of hesitation Kamina gave in to his curiosity and stepped closer to see what the doctor was holding. He felt something tug on his body but ignored it as he peeked over the doctor’s shoulder to see the little bundle. Silver hair, green eyes, glowing green eyes. He gasped and backed away, the strange force pulling on him harder. He struggled against it but felt himself being pinned to the wall behind him. His vision began to blur, the sounds around him were muffled. His body jerked back as he heard the woman say one word “Kamina”.

Kamina jerked his hand out of the Mako portal and backed away from it. “The hell?” He looked up at the once sentient lion’s head. “What did I just see?” The head remained silent. It was nothing but an opening now, he was alone again. He looked down at his hands, they were shaking. A shaky laugh escaped him. “It wasn’t real…yet I’m still shaking like a scared little kid.” He clenched his fist and took a deep breath. “There’s no going back now.” He looked up at the vortex, his gaze hardening into a look of determination. “All I can do is move forward.” He took off running towards the portal at full speed. With a final push of his legs he leapt into the Mako and whatever lay beyond it.

Wet. That was the first word that came to Kamina’s mind to describe how it felt. That thought was followed by the words “warm”, “strange”, and “tingly”. He opened his eyes to find himself floating in a sea of liquid Mako, or maybe falling was a better word. Some unseen force was pulling him in deeper at a steady pace. He couldn’t move, the liquid was too thick; all he could do was watch and wait. Time went by, he couldn’t tell how much time but he knew it felt like quite a while. He closed his eyes and let his body fall. He looked down towards where he was falling and saw something shine. He shut his eyes as his body hit the light and he fell onto a floor. A dry, hard wood, completely normal floor. He reopened his orbs and looked around the new area. Above him was the Sea of Mako he had fallen through but he was in an empty room. He looked down at his body; it was fine except for the green liquid that had soaked into his clothes. He sighed and wringed his hair free of as much Mako as he could. “Guess I shouldn’t be surprised. ACHOO!” He sniffed and crossed his arms as a shiver came over him. “Must find dry clothes.”

He took off his jacket and discarded his soaked shirt before replacing it on his body and looking around the room, still shivering occasionally. A door at the far end caught his attention, though he was positive it wasn’t there a moment before. Kamina walked to it with caution and touched it tentatively. It was solid. “At least I can touch here.” He pushed lightly on the door and it opened to a dimly lit hallway. He poked his head out of the doorway and looked down both ends of the hall. “Appears safe…but appearances can be deceiving.” He took a step into the hall and looked up and down it again. “I guess it’s safe.” He spied another door at the end of the hall; this one had a visible light behind it. He smiled and stepped towards the door, only to feel his foot sink down a bit and here a distinct click.

There was a loud rumbling and the door beside him shut and locked itself. He pushed and banged on it in vain, the rumbling sound still coming from somewhere. “Fuck.” The rumbling sound started coming closer and Kamina looked down the other end of the hall and then down at the door. He heard something rolling and broke into a mad sprint for the door. Behind him a slot opened in the wall and a giant boulder rolled out. It hit the opposite wall and began to roll in the direction Kamina was running in. It was then that he realized something; the hallway was built at an angle. Kamina swore and pushed his muscles to work harder and move faster. The boulder naturally picked up speed and was quickly gaining on him.

He could see the door more clearly now, he was going to make it. He was going to live. Well, at least before a wall came down in front of the door and spike protruded from it. “Oh fuck me!” Kamina shouted and looked behind him. The boulder was catching up but he could stay ahead of it, at least until he slammed into the spikes became impaled on each one and slowly bleed to death. “Great! Get crushed or become a pin cushion.” He looked back at the boulder again and then at the wall. He audibly growled and skidded to a stop while turning to face the oncoming boulder at the same time. “Like hell I’ll die like this!” Kamina planted his feet firmly and cocked back his right hand, forming it into a fist while doing so. “If I have to choose between running into death and running from it…” He leapt at the boulder and punched it as hard as he could muster. “Then I’ll run head first into death’s arms!”

He slammed his fist into the boulder in an attempt to push it back, or die trying. The boulder didn’t stop; it kept rolling even as his fist pushed against it. His feet touched the ground and the real battle began. Kamina did his best to hold the rolling rock back but he was still inching back ever so slowly. He gritted his teeth and pushed harder against the boulder. ‘No. I this goes on I’ll…’ He couldn’t bring himself to finish the thought. Death was not an option. Not now. A familiar twinge went through his body and his fist sparked for a moment. At that moment a new found power filled him, but only for that moment. He gave the boulder a defiant push and managed to force it to go backwards.

Kamina smirked as the stone death device retreated. But his victory was short lived. He lost his footing and slipped backwards, into the spiked wall behind him. His eyes widened as time seemed to slow down around him. It was like one of those really cool movie scenes where something was made to look a hundred times cooler by doing it in slow motion. Or like someone had casts slowga on him. He shut his eyes tight and prepared for death. ‘After all that, this is how I fall?’ he fell back and into the wall of spikes. And then he fell through it. Kamina landed square on his back and opened his eyes before blinking a few times. He sat up on his elbows and looked down at his legs. They were half way in the room his upper body was in but the other half was still in the hallway. ‘An illusion?’ He heard a giggle come from behind him and quickly turned his head to see what it was.

It was…a girl. A little girl with red hair done up in pig tails, she couldn’t be any older than six years of age. She was wearing a pink sun dress and holding a teddy bear. Kamina cocked an eye brow before another, more stoic, voice sounded next to him. “It’s not nice to laugh at people Rosy.” Kamina turned to see a girl around his age, possibly a little older. She had green hair and wore a black top along with matching pants and shoes. Kamina scooted away from the girl and got to his feet. “Who the hell are you too?” Rosy giggled again and help her teddy bear in front of her face. “We’re here to watch the fight.” Kamina cocked an eyebrow and opened his mouth to ask who was fighting but he was cut off by a loud yell from above his head.

Acting on reflex Kamina clasped his hands in front of him just in time to catch a sword that would have come down on his head otherwise. Behind the sword was a boy not that much older than himself. Kamina took in his features: long black hair that fell to his shoulders, blue green eyes that glowed as his own did, there was peach fuzz on his chin where a beard could start growing in. There was something familiar about him. Something in the back of Kamina’s mind tried to force itself to the front. Kamina looked into the boy’s eyes; the manic look they held brought one person to mind. Kamina knew it was him, he couldn’t believe it but it was him. He let an audible growl come from his throat before kicking the boy away. “Kane!”

Kane grinned, a blood thirsty look in his eyes. “So you remember your brother, Kamina. I’m so flattered!!!” Kamina snarled and charged at him. “You’re dead! I killed you!” Kamina swung at his he but Kane stepped to the side and seemingly vanished. He reappeared behind Kamina and slashed his back with his sword. Kamina caught a glimpse of his sword. ‘That’s Shade.’ He’d be struck with his own sword. Kamina gasped and fell forward onto the ground. He pushed himself to his hands and knees as Kane vanished again, this time appearing next to Kamina and kicking him square in the ribs and sending across the room. Kamina crashed into the wall at the far end and fell to the ground. Kane appeared in front of him again and placed the flat of his blade under Kamina’s chin with the point pressing into his throat slightly. Kane smirked and lifted Kamina’s head to look at him.

“You look so pathetic, Kamina.” Kane pulled the blade back and stabbed Kamina in the left shoulder, causing the young man to cry out in pain. Kane’s smirk turned into a blood thirsty grin as he removed the blade and began to slash Kamina across the chest over and over again. A crazed laugh escaped him as he tortured his former brother. “BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! HOW DOES IT FEEL KAMINA?!?! I’M KILLING YOU WITH THE SWORD OUR FATHER GAVE YOU!!!! HAHAHAHA, JUST DIE! ARE YOU DEAD YET?!?! ARE YOU?! ARE YOU?! ARE YOU?! ARE YOU?! TELL ME WHEN YOU’RE DEAD!!!” The green haired girl came up behind Kane and grabbed his shoulder. “That’s enough Kane. Just finish him.” Kane shrugged her off and turned around before grabbing her collar and lifting her off the ground. “This is my revenge! I didn’t drag him here just to stop now!”

Rosy giggled again and hugged her teddy bear. “If you kill Hojo’s pwoject you’ll get in twouble.” She walked past him and looked down at Kamina. “He doesn’t wealize does he?” She kissed his forehead and moved next to Kane. “Sephiwoth Clone’s can’t wejected by the Life Stweam. As long as we have him in this copy he can’t fight to full powew.” He pointed her teddy at him and cocked it. Gun barrels came out of the bears arms, legs, mouth, and eye sockets. Kane snarled and dropped her green haired girl before grabbing Rosy’s arm. “NO! He’s mine. I kill him.” While Kane ranted Kamina struggled to his feet. He panted hard and his hair shadowed his eyes. “Kane.” Kane turned his head and was met with a fist to his jaw, courtesy of Kamina. He flew back and crashed into the green haired woman before the two of them toppled to the floor. Rosy pointed her teddy bear at him and began firing off rounds.

Kamina jumped to the left and ran along the wall, keeping ahead of the girl’s fire. Kane got up and charge with Shade again, only this time Kamina was ready for him. He spun out of the way of a downward slash and danced backward as Kane swung wildly at him. ‘Left, right, diagonal, downward. As long as I can predict his moves I can dodge.’ Kamina kept moving and dodging Kane’s furious attacks. ‘All I can do is dodge.’ He though angrily. ‘I need a weapon. A sword, a gun, anything!’ He ducked a decapitating blow and side stepped Kane. The green haired girl rushed to his side and struck him quickly before he could react. Something she did screwed him up, his body suddenly felt sluggish. Kane put Kamina in a choke hold and held his body still. The girl took a battle stance and glared at Kamina. “I am Fey Veronica. Remember that name; it is the last one you shall ever know.”

Fey leapt at Kamina and cocked her open palm back. Kamina turned his body and put Kane in between himself and Fey, causing her to strike Kane several times in the back before stopping. He went limp and fell back off Kamina. Kamina spun around and retreated backwards. Fey knelt down and started striking more points on Kane’s back, as she did so Rosy stepped in front of her and shot at Kamina again. His eyes narrowed and he moved forward, ducking and stepping in between her rounds. Once he got close enough he grabbed her bear arm and hoisted her into the air. Rosy struggled and kicked at him, Kamina smirked and threw he into Fey, the result of which sent the two toppling backwards. Kane, now seemingly fixed stood up and fired an ice spell at Kamina. In response Kamina spun while moving backwards and removed his jacket before spinning it in front of him, deflecting the ice shards. Kane growled and lunged at Kamina. He moved to the side and wrapped his jacket around the blade of Kane’s sword. Kane tried to pull the sword away but his strength had not yet returned. Kamina smiled and kicked him in the gut. He spun his jacket and tossed the sword in the air before replacing the makeshift shield on his body and catching the sword.

Kane fell back and landed next to Fey and Rosy. Kamina stabbed the sword in the ground and panted. “You bastards think I’ll just sit here and die? Like hell I will!” Kane got up and pulled out a gun, Kamina’s gun. Kamina’s eye twitched. “Seriously? Can’t you get your own weapons?” Kane growled. “You took it from me after you stabbed me, you ass.” Kamina yawned and cocked an eyebrow. “Really? I had forgotten that.” Kane growled again and began to shoot at Kamina. Kamina smirked and spun his sword faster than should be possible. He caught each of Kane’s bullets on the flat of the blade and flicked them back at the group. The three moved in different directions to avoid the attack.

Kamina shouldered the blade. “I finally see how this place works.” A look of shock came over the group and Kamina’s smirk grew wider. “If I’m right you three are still alive. I know I am.” Kamina removed the Materia from his sword before tossing it back to Kane. “And if I’m right, there’s a fourth member of your little party that’s keeping us all here.” He put the Materia in his pocket and took a fighting stance. The three surrounded him. “Now that you’ve figured it out.” Fey began. “We can kill you.” Rosy continued. “You won’t live long enough to tell anyone about this.” Kane finished. Kamina smirked shifted his stance. Black mist gathered in his hands. “This place is made of spirits. If that’s the case then I’ll attack with my very soul.” ‘I hope to hell I’m right about this.’ He added mentally. He closed his eyes and focused. The mist began to take shape in his palms. In his right hand a blue Desert Eagle with white designs on it formed, in his right a Beretta with a revolver barrel made for 10 shots, it was black with red lines dancing around it. Kamina aimed both the guns. “Feel the wrath of my soul!” He opened fire on Fey and Kane. The pair ran in opposite directions to avoid being shot.

Rosy opened fire on Kamina with her bear. He weaved between the bullets and ran towards her. A clicking sound alerted both of them that she was out of bullets. He pulled out a clip to put into the bear but was halted by a hand that grabbed her arm. The six year old looked up into Kamina’s face before he kicked her into a wall and took the bullets for his own. “Thanks.” He turned towards the wall and shot it several times, causing a long crack to form and spread. Kamina smirked and ran towards the wall, crashing into it with his shoulder and breaking free of the room.

He found himself once again falling in the sea of Mako. He holstered his new guns behind his back and let his body free fall. A roar behind him alerted him to Kane, who jumped out of the room to chase him. He brought his sword down on Kamina only for Kamina to raise his hands and summon his own blade to battle with. “Back off.” He pushed Kane away as a black wing spread from his shoulder. He gripped the blade and flew towards Kane, a familiar aura surrounding him. A pair of white wings spread from Kane and he flew at Kamina. Kamina’s aura condensed on his chokutô as the two crossed blades. They ended up in a dead lock, both pushing the other with increasing force. Kane’s eyes narrowed on Kamina and he pushed off and flew up higher. Kamina’s wing receded and he began to fall downwards again. “Meet me at our home Kamina. And shall end this.”

Kamina smirked as he fell out of the life stream and back towards the planet. He crashed landed on a roof and fell into a bed inside a house. He looked up through the ceiling and into the sky. “I’ll be there, Kane.”
