Azreal closed his eyes, letting out a long yawn. He grumbled to himself to a few seconds before letting his right eyelid crack open, flooding his eyes with dim light. Patrol duty again... ugh, what a bore... He stood atop a large metal beam that protruded from part of an under construction highway. The beam was just under two feet wide and the SOLDIER was positioned at the very edge of the metal. From up on his perch, he held a commanding view of the area around him. A slight wind flowed freely between the constructs of the area, leaving his hair and the ends of his uniform to fly in the air current. The everyday lights of Midgar filled his vision, creating a dazzling glow of yellow and white before him. Below him, the scenery was much different; only a handful of lights lit the chasm of darkness that spread under Azreal.

It was dawn, and the faint amber aura of the sun was just beginning to touch the opposite side of the city. Until about noon, this section would be bathed in the shadows of the rest of the city. Unfortunately, Azreal wouldn't be there long enough to enjoy the ease of patrol in full daylight. This assignment was a punishment for his latest case of disobeyed orders. His last mission was to keep a group of monsters away from a small village outside of Midgar. He had gotten carried away, chasing after the pack when they fled. Despite his victory, a second pack of monsters had assaulted his allies at the town while he was mopping the first group up. Two of the three other SOLDIERS had been severely injured. When he thought about the incident, He found himself grinning. Although he had been passed up for promotion yet again, at least he managed to have some fun in all the chaos.

Azreal lifted up his other eyelid, deciding that it was about time for him to get started. He pulled out a pair of headphones from his shirt pocket and put them into his ears before he started scanning across the dimmed landscape before him, looking for any sign of movement. It was odd for anyone around this neighborhood to be out this early in the morning, so it was his job to investigate anything deemed "out of the ordinary". So he turned up the music that he kept on his phone and listened to the beats as he waited. It didn't take long. The SOLDIER's mako green eyes honed in on a shadow darting through the streets not far away. Well, time to get to work... Azreal knew better than to deviate from the mission this time, it was always dangerous to screw up twice in a row.

Without further hesitation, Azreal unslung his gun from his back and hoped off the edge of the steel girder, plummeting about 10 feet to a rooftop that was just below him. From there, he jumped down twice more so that he was on the third floor of the building directly under his perch. Running across the shabby roof for about a block, Azreal kept his eyes locked on the blur of movement. By now, they must have known they were being chased. At the end of the block, the SOLDIER kicked off the edge of the roof, soaring across the street to a second story building. As a third floor wall rose up infront of him, he jumped to the side and slid down a metal bar that was fixated on the side of the building. Now running through the streets himself, Azreal chased the shadow into an alley. He slowed his pace considerably, fearing an ambush. There... Azreal moved over to a trashcan and kicked it over, pointing his rifle down at the shadow behind it.

The cat, scared out of its mind, darted down the alley, quickly vanishing from sight. Azreal let his gun fall to his side and dangle from his shoulder by its strap. He took a deep breath and sighed. "Just a cat..." Turning around, he walked back out of the alley and turned his music down a little so that he could better hear the sounds of the quiet morning.
-----------------
The air was still, and there were barely any noises to be heard outside the rustling of wind and the occasional rodent. Among the shaded buildings, there were barely any lights on. Those that were on belonged to people that were probably preparing for work, as far off as it seemed. As Azreal stepped out of the alley, he quickly checked up and down the street for anymore signs of activity. All things considered, it was an uneventful morning so far. Azreal turned to the right due to a strange impulse and slowly walked down the street. Coming to an intersection, he looked down each of the streets, once again seeing nothing. As quiet as it was, Azreal found it eerie to be the only one on the streets. It was almost like he was just waiting for something to happen.

He continued walking straight through the intersection, deciding it was best to push these thoughts aside. A long day would only feel longer if he kept thinking about it. When he reached the end of the next block, he noticed the sound of footsteps between the beats of his music. He pulled his headphones out tried to focus on where the sound was coming from. The footsteps grew louder and louder until it seemed as if the source was right next to him. Taking a step forward from behind a building, Azreal pulled his sword from his back and quickly turned to the left.

"State your business."

"What the? ...uh... um... s-s-sorry s-sir, I’m just on my way t-to the train sta-station." Azreal pulled his sword back from the kid's neck and pointed it at his torso instead. After all, he only needed to get some information, not make them crap themself. "It's a bit early to go to the station isn't it? The train doesn't even start to get ready to depart for another hour or so."

"Th-the engineer was going to show me some of the systems... I've been training to help keep up with maintenance on the trains..."

Azreal kept his eyes trained on the kid, trying to decide if they were telling the truth or not. He wouldn't even dream of lying right now... look how badly he's shaking, probably didn't even hear me coming... He pulled his sword back and put it back on his back. "Whatever, get going, you shouldn't be out on the street this early." The boy took off in a mad dash, trying to get away from the SOLDIER as fast as he could. Azreal shook his head and chuckled softly to himself as he started walking again. Before he could go more than a few steps, his cell phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and flipped it open, bringing it up to his ear. "I’m here."

A deep voice poured out of the speaker. "Dark, what’s your status?"

"Two false alarms so far, a kid headed to the station and a cat."

There was a deep laugh from the other end. "Any casualties yet?"

"Give me a break Riot, Its partly your fault that I’m on this assignment anyway."

"Hey, no complaining, you've got work to do after all."

There was a click on the other end and Azreal closed his phone. Eric, or rather, "Riot", was one of Azreal's few friends and had been since he first joined SOLDIER. he was the other SOLDIER that wasn't injured in the last mission. He had been "busy" when the monsters attacked. Although Azreal didn't know exactly what he had been doing, he knew that he didn't get punished for it.

Letting out a sigh, Azreal put his phone is his pocket and put his headphones back on. With the flick of a switch, the faint music started up again, covering up the dead silence that filled the streets.
-----------

Almost feeling as if he were just looking for something to break up the monotony of his task, Azreal slowly increased his pace. It had almost been an hour before anything else happened. It was still some time before the streets would come alive, meaning that he was still on patrol for some time. He noticed that more lights began to turn on, but it was still insignificant compared to the rest of the city. Soon, He came to the outer edge of the sector and he could faintly see the black ring of lifeless wasteland that encircled Midgar. It wasn't a pretty sight, but one got used to it after living in the city all his life.

The edge of his stare caught movement again. Hoping that it wasn't another false alarm, Azreal immediately turned around. He only managed to catch the image of a shadow fading behind the cover of the second floor wall of a building. Finally... this boredom was almost getting unbearable... He switched his music back off and began walking back down the street in a casual manner. When he reached the building where he saw the shadow, Azreal ran at the wall, walking up three steps before grabbing onto a narrow ledge that the architecture created. The SOLDIER pulled himself up and grabbed onto the bottom of a window frame which he used as a step ladder until he could reach the edge the roof. He hauled himself over the edge of the roof and got back to his feet.

Out of an unconscious reflex, he pulled his gun out and brought it up to his shoulder. His eyes scanned across the roof, looking for anything that had been disturbed. After a few moments, he noticed that the layer of dust that covered the roof was compacted in some spots, forming a sort of footprint shape. These he followed to the edge of the building. He looked down and into a darkened alley through his rifle scope, seeing nothing. Still following his instincts, Azreal jumped down into the alley. He was surrounded on three sides by brick walls and the only path out was very narrow; only about 2 feet wide. It didn't appear that this alley was connected to the streets and further investigation revealed a crude ladder that was attached to the wall.

Azreal flipped open his phone and rapidly typed in several numbers. He brought it up to his ear and spoke, keeping his voice in a low whisper. "Dark here, I might have something... yeah, I’m in a secluded alley behind a building on glaive street.... yeah, standard procedure, ill report back in ten minutes." He put his phone back and slowly moved forward with his gun in the crook of his shoulder. He tried to keep as silent as possible, but the ground was littered with trash that he kept stepping on. He looked around a corner to see single door at the end of a 20 foot passage. It took less than 30 seconds to make it to the door with minimal noise.

Azreal put his ear to the wood and listened for anything on the other side. There were very quiet noises, but he couldn't quite make out what they were. Lets do this... Azreal took a deep breath and positioned himself in front of the door. He exhaled and slammed the butt of his rifle down on the door handle. As he brang his rifle back up he moved his other hand back to his sword's hilt and delivered a hard kick to the door, sending it crashing back on its hinges.

-----------

Two gunshots echoed through the air. One whipped past Azreal's head, narrowly missing him, while the other slammed into his abdomen, losing most of its momentum as it passed through his armor. The sudden pain made his reflexes kick in, making him take cover behind the doorframe before another shot sounded off. He could feel blood seeping out of the small wound, but for now he had to ignore it. He moved into the doorway again and sprayed the inside of the dark room with 8 rounds before going back into cover. He waited a few seconds in dead silence. The absence of returning fire or any type of groaning told Azreal that they must have exited the room already. He carefully walked into the doorway and felt along the wall for a light. His fingers met a small switch and he flipped it, bathing the once dark room in a bright light.

Azreal's eyes strained to adjust as he scanned across the room. It appeared to be some sort of weapons locker with machine parts and ammo clips scattered in a huge mess. Sure enough, there was a door in the far corner that was left wide open. He sighed then ran across the room and through the passage. Like the alleyway that lead here, this hall was also extremely narrow with brick wall on both sides. He realized that if there was a fight here, it would be close quarters. He put his gun back on his back and retrieved his broadsword, keeping it pointed ahead of him as he ran.

The farther he went, the more the light seemed to fade, until it seemed as if it was nearly pitch black. Azreal slowed his pace, now listening more than he was seeing. Not far ahead, he could barely hear the sound of faint panting. When his eyes finally adjusted to the darkness, he could make out an outline of light from another door. Better hurry... not much longer until my scheduled check in... He walked softly across the hard floor until he reached the end of the hall. A sudden burst of movement sent the door in front of him clattering across the floor, cloven in half.

The assailant stood on the other side of the room in slight shock, not expecting the SOLDIER to have followed him. He had blonde hair and stood roughly 5 foot 6, probably only about 15 years old. He was wearing a leather vest and a pair of khakis. There was an out of date Shin-ra regulation rifle leaning against the wall beside him, but he wasn't able to reach it in time. Azreal lunged forward with a wild slash. The rebel had just enough time to duck under the slash and roll to the side before Azreal brought his sword down, leaving a gash in the wall behind where the kid had been.

The youth quickly got to his feet and grabbed a short sword off the wall. Azreal charged at him, leaving behind slash marks on the walls and floor before finally cutting in an upward motion. As his sword connected with his opponent', he began to realize that there was not enough space in the room to fight efficiently. His foe thrusted forward and he just barely had time to dodge to the side. Using the momentum from the dodge, he spun around his blade and made a turning slash against the kid. His opponent blocked the attack, but the force from the blow threw him back into a door.

Azreal drove his sword forth, slamming it into the wall where his foe was a moment before. While the SOLDIER tried to pull his broadsword back out from the wall, the kid moved in for a strike. Azreal jumped back at the last second, leaving a shallow cut across his chest. Grunting, he pulled his gun from his back and fired a four round burst. Two bullets caught his enemy in the legs, making him fall to his knees as he tried to follow up his attack. Azreal took two steps forward and kicked him in the side.

Just as his kick made contact, a shockwave of pain passed through him. He looked down to see blood seeping through his uniform. The ringing of a gunshot still hung in the air by the time that he had realized what happened. Another person stood in the room, holding the gun that the kid had set by the wall. "Get away from him you freak!" Another shot tore through Azreal's shoulder and he fell back against the wall. Using the hilt of his sword to hold himself up, he emptied most of his clip in the direction of the two. The one with the gun retreated, dragging the other through the doorway before they locked the door behind them. Azreal slumped back against the wall and tried to catch his breath. His cell phone rang, but he couldn't bring himself to answer. The edges of his vision blurred and everything began to darken seconds before he blacked out.

----------

The next thing Azreal knew, someone clapped their hand on his shoulder and shook him awake. "Hey.... Hey.... DARK! get up." He hazily looked up to see the massive figure of Riot pulling him to his feet. Shaking his head to wake up the rest of the way, He realized that his wounds had been bandaged and his sword was no longer stuck in the wall beside him, but rather resting on Riot's shoulder. "Nice of you to join us, now what exactly happened here?"

Trying to focus his thoughts, Azreal grabbed the end of his sword's hilt and took it from his comrade. "...Some kid was following me, so I went to investigate and found this place, got shot, got ambushed, then got shot a few more times... and here we are... How long was I out?" As Riot answered the question, he looked around the room at the scars the fight left on the room. "I left as soon as you didn't answer your phone, took me about five minutes."

"Great, then we can still catch them if we hurry. They went that way." Azreal made a motion to the door that the two went through. Riot cracked his knuckles and nodded, a wide grin spread across his face. "We better hurry; your shift is almost over." Soon, the duo was rushing through the compound, following the trail of blood that the shot rebel had left behind. Normally, Azreal was much faster than Riot, but he had to slow down a bit so that it didn't create too much strain on his wounds. Riot was built like a tank, he was easily over 6 feet tall and most of his body weight was muscle. He didn't use guns, preferring a sword that was much like Azreal's own, except a bit larger.

After several minutes of traveling down into what appeared to be an underground sewer network, they came upon the rifle that the kid had been carrying. By this point, Azreal was starting to reach a state of complete exhaustion. He fell behind Riot a bit and was panting fairly hard. When Riot realized this, he slowed down a bit, which only pushed Azreal to run harder to keep his pace. It didn't take long after that for them to catch up with the two rebels.

Azreal started to hear heavy footsteps up ahead. Through the darkness of the tunnel, he could see two figures ahead, one supporting the other's weight while they ran. He looked through the scope of his gun and fired his last shot, which connected with the injured kid's lower back. He fell onto the concrete and the other took off running. Riot took off after the runner and Azreal moved over to the one that had fallen, stepping on his back to hold him down. Now that he wasn't running, he started to realize just how hurt he was. The strenuous activity had caused his wounds to reopen and coat the front of his uniform in blood. There was a gash across the fabric of his shirt and a slightly bloodied cut underneath. If his prey had not been injured as well, it was likely that he could have gotten away.

Several moments later, Riot reappeared with the second kid over his shoulder. He looked at Azreal and laughed. "Alright Dark, your shift is over, I'll take care of this and you go get some rest." Happy to oblige, he let Riot pick up the other prisoner and hoist him onto his free shoulder before he walked away. Azreal put his gun in its holster and slowly followed his comrade back out of the complex. When they reached the room where the fight had occurred, they exited out another door and soon found themselves in the streets. Now that it was late in the morning and because they were at the outer edge of the city, the sun could be seen peaking out over the tops of the larger buildings. A group of waiting MPs relieved Riot of his burden and took them away to places unknown.

Riot shoved Azreal a few steps down the street. "Hey, i said get some rest. Give my regards to Talon and Rook; they should still be resting up at HQ." Azreal nodded and walked forth, soon disappearing amongst the city streets.
