Chris was at the Battle Arena once again. This time around, he was kind of hoping for a serious fight, as indicated by the fact that he had most of his Materia in place, filling up all of the slots available on his armor. All of his elements were in place, as well as both of his defensive Materia, the Jump Materia, and the Magic Energy-holding Materia. Chris adjusted the bracelet on his right arm, and then stepped up to the front desk, paid his fee, and headed into the arena.

Lini hadn’t counted on having to actually defend his belt when he won the title of Champion of the Battle Arena. It had been buried somewhere among all the legalese that he had to go through after everything had been settled out. Normally, it would have been something he remembered, but between the photo-ops and the paparazzi and the fancy dinners that happened immediately afterwards, it had kind of moved to the back of his mind. Actually, it wasn’t until that he had gotten a call the other day telling him that he was contractually obliged to defend his title did he remember that was part of the agreement when he won. So, Lini hurried back to the Gold Saucer as fast as he could in order to defend his title. When he got there, he found out that they already had an opponent set up for him. Of course, he did have to pay to battle once again, but twenty Gil was a small price to pay to be ready. “Alright,” Lini thought as he went over his things, “I think my usual arrangement will work here. Though with all the new stuff I’ve gotten recently, I’m going to have to get an equipment upgrade soon.” But, with the Gil paid, it was time to see who Lini’s first opponent would be in the defense of his title.

Lini was his opponent, and as he was the tournament's champion, that meant that this was considered a Title Defense match for Lini. If Chris could somehow beat him, then he would be the new champion...until someone else came and beat him down. The handicaps were relatively simple: Chris would be gaining health over time, while Lini would be losing it, making this mostly a stalling match. Not necessarily the best way to win the belt, but... At any rate, the battle was on. Chris started with his usual first move, which was to set up a barrier against physical attacks, and prepare for a face-beating. Lini didn't just know how to beat faces. He had a Ph.D in face-beating. And chances were that the belt meant that he could beat face with authority now. The only real saving grace that he had is the no-item rule, meaning no growth potion-boosted smashings. Chris sent off a quick Aero attack to test Lini's reactions.

Lini winced a bit when he heard the results of the handicaps. He had been told there was going to be new ones, but he got an old time-and-true favorite of poison. His opponent, who happened to be Chris of all people, ended up getting a new one and having his health Regen throughout the fight. It hardly seemed fair, but at least it wouldn’t last too long. It was going to be annoying, though, since Lini had no way to recover any damage he had taken, and Chris could heal himself in addition to the natural health regeneration he would have. “Looks like the deck is stacked against me in this one…” Lini thought to himself as the match officially started, “I’m not going to be able to play around and have fun…” He was going to complain about his rotten luck, but then he realized that this actually worked better. After all, the champion was supposed to be able to overcome any sort of obstacles that came in his way. That’s why they were the champion. Chris started things off by shooting a quick Aero at him. Lini countered by brining up his MBarrier. The magic attack was weakened by it before it struck him in his armor. Lini almost didn’t feel anything at all from it, in fact, the only sign that he had even been hit by a wind attack was that his pompom swayed gently from the breeze. But he was poisoned, so every bit of damage he took counted. “Brace yourself, Kupo,” Lini said, “Because here I come!” Lini took to the air and charged at Chris at full speed. Before he got to him, though, he swerved a bit and started to fly in a rapid circle around him. His Aero Materia started to glow, and he created a vortex in the center of his spin. It was his first time using his Hurricane Strike against someone else, so here was to hoping that it would be effective.

The Aero attack had to go through three layers of defense: Lini's own Magic-blocking barrier, then his armor, which seemed to be designed to defend against Magic attacks, and then Lini's own resistance to Magic. Between all those, the attack didn't seem to register at all. That meant that first-level spells weren't going to work here. Lini then came back with his own attack. Lini spun around Chris at speeds fast enough to generate a whirlwind strong enough to carry Chris off. Lini then followed up with two powerful strikes, sending him flying down into the ground. The Barrier probably made a big difference in determining how much vitality he had left after that combo, and how much damage was done to the floor upon him crashing down. Chris got up and used his Restore Materia to heal some of the damage. Afterwards, Chris decided to deliver one of his own signature moves, but this time of the Limit Break variety. Chris's spear gave off a familiar scarlet glow, indicating the use of his currently-best Limit Break. Chris then launched the spear at Lini, knowing with a decent amount of certainty that he's probably not quite fast enough to dodge this, nor would what he has set up protect him as much.

Lini’s attacks hit hard, and if Chris hadn’t put up a barrier, his attack might have finished him off right then and there. But, Chris was still standing, and looked to be ready to keep going. Well, whatever. It just meant that the crowd would have a better match. After all, this was a championship match. The crowd needed to get their money’s worth. And get their money’s worth they were getting. Lini’s one attack had already forced Chris to heal. Not only that, he activated one of his opponents Limit Breaks as well. “Crud!” Lini thought, as he decided that spending the extra MP to put up a physical barrier to supplement his Mbarrier was a good idea. That turned out to be a very good idea as Chris’s glowing spear struck Lini right in the chest. “Ow.” Lini said as he rubbed the sore spot he was going to have later. It was Lini’s turn now, and he felt a wave of nausea roll over him as his poison take effect again. Lini shook it off. If he was going to win this, he was going to have to overcome not only all of Chris’s defenses, but all of the healing that he was capable of doing. Lini pointed his sword at Chris and his Aero Materia glowed again. A tornado started to form around Lini’s weapon. Lini moved into attack position and flew directly towards Chris and swung his wind-enhanced weapon at his opponent.

Chris's attack hit...for only a comparatively low amount of damage. Chris raised his hand for a little bit of a showoff value as his weapon returned to his hand. Lini prepared his next move, another wind-element attack, it seemed. Lini's strike landed true, and Chris was sent spiralling back a good distance. The attack probably would have taken him down if he hadn't had his barrier up. Chris healed up once again, this time more than before through two level ones instead of a level 2. This time, he didn't quite take enough damage to warrant the use of the same Limit Break again. This meant that he had to change around his strategy a bit more. Chris rushed forward and let loose a quick series of four stabs with his spear, hoping to get at least one of them to hit.

Lini’s next attack hit, but it wasn’t the decisive blow that he was hoping it would be. And because of that, Chris was able to heal most of the damage that he had been able to deal in that last round. It was annoying, because now it seemed like Chris was defiantly going for a stall win. And, because of the next nausea wave he felt, it seemed like his plan was working. Chris next went on the offense with four quick strikes of his spear. Lini couldn’t afford to take more damage in this match, and brought out his sword to block Chris’s shots at him. Chris attacked with four different strikes, and Lini countered with his own weapon four different times; preventing each blow from hitting and doing more damage. Well, if they were going to quick strikes, then Lini was going to follow suit. Once Chris had finished his attack barrage, Lini countered with a barrage of four strikes of his own. Hopefully, Lini had the speed to pull this off.

Chris's series of attacks was quite easily parried by Lini, and met with an equally furious assault. Chris couldn't back away in time to avoid it. The barrier held off the first attack, but the second one represented his limit. The barrier burst, mostly invisible to the spectators, save for a red ring around waist-height. Chris hit the ground hard, and wasn't getting up from that. The match was definitely over, probably before Lini's handicap elapsed.

Lini breathed a quick sigh of relief. His last attacks had ended the match with himself as the victor. “Whew,” Lini said, “That was fun. Granted, the poison thing wasn’t, but I still had fun.” The announcement came in that Lini was still the champion of the Battle Arena, as several of the medical team arrived to carry his defeated foe away for treatment. Lini had hit him hard, but not hard enough to cause any permanent damage. “Until next time, Kupo,” Lini said as his friend and opponent was taken away, “I’ll battle anytime.” |
