Name: Zera Alias: Hawk Race Failed Experiment Age: 14 (Physically) 40 (Mentally) Gender: Male Hometown: Benhurst (Open Fields) Personality: General The first thing to point out is that Zera is not of Midgar, he is not of the lifestream either. He was summoned here by a botched use of an artificial red materia. Before he came here, he was a very powerful warlord who mastered over the arts of necromancy and black magic. He was said to have been so powerful that his fistfalls sounded like cracks of thunder. Now, in Midgar, all that he has left is his intellect. He is trapped in the body of a child, with his powers diminished to the point of uselessness. In a world far more advanced than his own, he, even with his scholarly mind and iron will, he finds himself utterly bewildered at times. For the most part, Zera was, and still is, a downright evil and despicable individual. He is meticulous, methodical, and manipulative. He craves power and lets none stand in his path to achieve it. If at all possible, he prefers not to dirty his hands with pointless conflict, and instead opts to manipulate the poor wretch into offing themselves. He is vicious, aggressive, and incredibly charismatic. Though much of this has gone to his head. In his own world, his statements would have never been argued. Now, in a world where he has no powers, and no way to back up his words, he finds it very difficult to cope. And control himself for that matter. His desire for power and respect eventually lead him to develop an externally pleasant composure. He appears to be a generally respectful, kind, and even generous individual. Always seeking ways to make others indebted to him, using his foes and even his friends personal codes against them. He isn't afraid to completely destroy them mentally if that is what it takes to achieve his goals. In Midgar Zera, to a great fault, has a massive intellect and ego. As such, in his new, teenage form he struggles to adapt. In a society where children his age are not taken seriously, and where children his age 'acting' smart can lead to being beaten is a constant shadow hanging over him. He has yet to get the hang of pretending to be a child while in public. Often times blowing his cover by getting into deep conversations or using very complex, and scathing insults. Most of this outlandish behavior is also caused by the very body he is in. Transferring from a forty year old body to that of a hormonal fourteen year old is jarring, incredibly jarring. As such, his normal iron composure is often times shattered by outbursts that are totally out of personality for him in general. This has also, despite his prior marriage, reintroduced a subconscious fascination with women, despite already having 'experienced' that world in great detail. His common reaction however is blunt indifference, attempting to contain these unusual emotions and maintain his demeanor. When approached by someone he doesn't know, Zera attempts to be civil, and often times will make an effort to appear as a child. Though to keep himself 'sane' he will persist a form of internal monologue to comment on these people as he would if he weren't a 'insignificant child'. When approached by someone he does know, he will often times lower the 'act' of the child and simply be himself. Zera has a jovial sense of humor when he's not in deep thought, which is most of the time. His plotting and scheming causes him to appear very introverted and absorbed, though that isn't far off from the truth. His obsessive personality has lead him to constantly be thinking, which causes him a great disadvantage. Zera's speech patterns range thanks to his years of changing personas to fit the situation. Though one clear way to identify him is his incredible vocabulary for a 'street urchin' of his age. Another is his curiosity and lack of knowledge about this new world, which leads him to bungle through many situations such as cellphones, vehicles and computers. Appearance: Posted Image Despite the raw evil and malice brooding under the surface. Zera's childhood appearance was that of pure innocence. He was small when he was in his early teens, around four and a half feet. His body was slim and underdeveloped physically. He had a habit of letting his later short cut golden blonde hair grow long. His also soon to be piercing sky blue gaze was big, and filled with curiosity. His skin was pale and smooth, unlike his grizzled, toughened features later in life. As a point, he retains much of his obsessiveness from his real self, which manifests at times in a constant desire to remain clean. Not wanting to get himself dirty and sick with this worlds strange diseases. He keeps himself well groomed, despite being on the road and always makes an effort to keep his poise as statuesque as possible. Though with his runty figure that often serves more to embarrass himself. In midgar, Zera tries to disguise himself as much as possible. Usually wearing the common street fashions. Blue jeans, a t-shirt, maybe a sweater, and tennis shoes. He finds these new, fantastic forms of clothing very interesting and makes it a point to procure ones he finds especially attractive. Though this often leads to embarrassment as well. Cost: None Traits (List the Traits of your race) Name: Shattered Summon Description: Zera was called to midgar by the use of a summon materia, artificially created by the scientists of shin-ra. Later stolen and then used. With no spirit tied to it, the materia searched for the strongest being it could. It found Zera, a mighty warlord in he heat of battle, ripping him from his world he was cast to Midgar. Upon his arrival the materia shattered, stranding him. His once great power, which relied on a foreign world's magic, was rendered all but worthless. His body was reverted to that of a fourteen year old and he was left with nothing but the scraps of clothing on his back and the weakened runeblade in his hand. What's worse, the practical use of materia is alien to him, making it difficult to get his mind around using it. Requirements: Be Zera Effect: MP Cost for materia increased by x1.2, Casting Requirement for Materia increased by x1.5, Starts with 0 gil. Cannot start with armor or a weapon (save for the Ak'rauut trait). Does not start with a cellphone. Where the highest technology was rifled barrels, steam powered machines and just the beginnings of electrical power. Where magic ruled and where the horse was still a more efficient form of transportation. The culture is completely different, and the fact that he's trapped in the body of a hormonal 14 year old doesn't help either. Requirements: Be Zera Effect: Zera's machine use skill is locked after approval. His ability to function in Midgar society is also strained, he cannot buy from shops and keeping his profile low is difficult for him. Cost: None Name: Adaptation Description: Before his untimely appearance in midgar, Zera was a very powerful warlord who had mastered the darkest arts of magic. It was said his very touch had a dark power to it. Now, trapped in a world where magic functions completely differently, his powers are slowy adapting. His body now behaves more like a series of materia, allowing him to rediscover his old 'spells' and 'powers' over time. Requirements: Be Zera Effect: Zera can create techniques that have necromancy/darkness type effects. For example, creating artificial zombies, draining health, turning invisible, etc. Though he starts with none of these. Cost: None Name: Ak'rauut Description: The only object that came with him to Midgar was his runeblade, Ak'rauut, the intellgent weapon has been reduced to a massive metal hunk (approximately the size of a buster sword). Though it still appears to carry the same magics it once did. As Zera begins to regain his lost powers, the weapon may as well. Requirements: Be Zera Effect: Zera starts with Ak'rauut. A 'warblade' who's weapon Strength is equal to (Stat total/7) its weight is equal to (Strength/3) It gains one materia slot per 20 strength. Cost: None Name: Xerxes Description: Zera does not realize it, but another friend also made his way to Midgar with him. Xerxes, his mighty steed, a black stallion with red glowing eyes, flaming hooves, mane and tail, and the unnatural ability to fly. After his connection to the magical workings of midgar is strengthened enough, he will be able to summon him. Requirements: Be Zera Effect: When Zera's Magic stat reaches 100 he can finally use this trait. Upon use, Xerxes, Zera's loyal companion appears next to him. Xerxes can fly, and behaves effectively as Zera's primary mode of transportation, he grants no combat benefits whatsoever (except for flying away from a loosing battle). Cost: None Weapons (May have up to a value of 1,000. See rules for details) Ak'rauut Description: [Hands: 2] A huge, buster sword sized blade made out of what appears to be a black iron. It has a faint glow and an almost irritable personality around it. Strength/Durability: 18 (130/7) Materia Slots: - Material: - Weight: 6 (18/3) Armor None Accessories None Materia None Items None History Rise to Power In another world, in another time, Zera was born. His mother was a namless prostitute who was raped by a high ranking paladin in the army. After abandoning the woman she gave birth to Zera. Zera's mother soon afterward committed suicide. He was discovered by a butcher by the name of Devaal. Devaal was a harsh, abusive man who despite raising the boy treated him more as a slave. His only real escape was with his childhood friends. Catherine, the daughter of two merchants. And Mosely a street urchin who Zera befriended early on. Catherine, who was very close to Zera, gave him the nickname Hawk. This was because his name, in the old tongue, means "he who feasts off the weak". Throughout his childhood he lived a simple life. Working hard for his 'father' and just trying to get along with the very supersticious populous of his home town. They saw bastard children as cursed. Though in the end he never lived out his full life in his home of Benhurst. The small trading town was overrun by a horde of barbarians known as the Thuul. At one time they had been noble knights, who stood as a balance to the paladins, their black magic used to protect the empire. They had been ostracised however, and over the centuries they devolved into a barbaric horde. During the upheval, Zera was captured and instead of finally being free of the life of a slave, he was put into a new slave life. The boy, not knowing if his friends had survived, was forced into an even more putrid existance. He loathed it, rebelling he took every chance to fight against his new life. He would steal books and read, he would steal weapons and learn to fight, he would fight with other slaves and even his masters. He grew up vicious, charismatic and highly intelligent. It was soon after he turned fifteen that he killed a female thuulic captian after she had tried to rape him. He was 'forced' to take her place, and was thereafter under the watchful eye of the current Thuulic Lord, Advaak. Advaak eventually took the boy under his wing, allowing him much more time to read and learn. He became obsessed with literature and magic, learning all he could from the ancient texts of the older thuul lords. He absorbed it like a sponge, craving more and more knowledge and power. His tactical brilliance would later give him the title 'the great'. Though his intellect still had its limits, his first plot to overthrow his master, Advaak, was discovered, and he still bears the massive scar on his back to remember his failure. Zera was banished, but he would not be defeated so easily. He made his way to the tomb of the past thuulic lords. Pleading to their damned spirits for their knowledge and power, they imparted him with it all. He gained tremendous power, and from the knowledge he forged the runeblade, Ak'rauut, the sword of rot. The sword gained its own personality, speaking into Zera's mind, it balanced him perfectly, its chaotic, bloodthirsty will against his iron, meticulous will. He returned, and with one fel stroke, slew his former master. He proclaimed himself the new Lord of the Thuul and set to work. From Horde, to Army Zera's first order of business was to transform the rampaging, disjointed horde of thuulic barbarians into an organized army. He swiftly went to work, crushing opposing generals, and bringing them to his side. He used his oratory skills to sway masses of thuul. He began a campaign of drawing in large numbers of rogue wizards and sorcerors whom had been banished for the practice of dark magic. Here they had a home. His power grew greater and greater, and it was becoming difficult to keep a low profile. He began training his troops, educating them, his iron fist and manipulative nature garnered more respect than fear from his men. He made a point of being at the head of the army, and always in the middle of the fray. He had a philosophy that he needed to be able to do everything his men did, or they would not follow him. The massive growth of the thuul soon reached its Zenith, and he chose that winter, at that date, to begin his campaign. He struck out at Mattai, his hated foe, with swift ferocity. His first target was his misbegotten home town of Benhurst. Benhurst at the time was still in reconstruction after its razing nearly twenty years beforehand. Now under the command of the Lieutenant Paladin, Taia Grenwald, it was a bastion of the Mattaian empire in the east. Compelled by Ak'rauut to defeat the Lieutenant without even raising his sword Zera'thuul rode into town in disguise. There he met Taia and claimed to be a merchant's son returning to build a new outpost here in the east. He offered the Paladin a break from her duties and a visit to the local tavern. Once in the tavern he cast a seal of silence upon it. Over the next three hours as he drank and spoke with the paladin, the city was overrun by his troops. Without a commander to lead them, they surrendered quickly. Shortly after he revealed his identity and demanded surrender. The fiery Taia was reluctant, but agreed. He spent the next year strengthening his positions, taking the neighboring cities of Durnheim and Alburhurst. As well as increasing his forces with the dead from each battle he opted to convert through manipulation and coercion those who survived his conquests. At the same time he kept a close eye on the Taia, the lieutenant he captured during his conquest of Benhurst. He had become increasingly interested in her as, despite her reluctance, she performed her tasks as one of his soldiers with increasing furor. In the end he opted to promote her to the rank of commander, becoming an advisor of one of his Generals. As he discussed her promotion with her, he revealed his increasing interest with her. By the end of the evening he decided to take her as his personal advisor and lover. The Third Great War Zera was ready, any foe that died in combat was animated as a soldier for his army. Every soldier that died was as well. As his army grew, so did his own personal power, as if they were intertwined. His army was on the move, the Mattaian empire, long had held back from attacking this new foe, could ignore him no longer. The only thing separating Zera's east from their West was the mountains and the small valley carved between them. Zera knew attacking that point was suicide. It was meaningless to assault the pass as the losses would not be worth it. Instead, Zera made his first show of true brilliance. He instead opted to cause the towers that manned each side of the gap to collapse, filling the chasm. The result would put the empire in a complacent state. It was simple with undead manpower to then remove the debris and continue on. However, only days after passing his entire army through the valley was he confronted, prematurely, with his greatest foe. Catherine, the girl he knew as a child, had grown into a Paladin. Not just any paladin, she was known as Catherine the Zealous, one of the most fervent haters of the thuul in the world. The two met the first time there on those plains, the mountains to his back. The battle lasted a day, head on warfare on each side, no tactics, just carnage. Catherine was forced to retreat, and Zera moved on to the first city. The war thereafter consisted of Zera's brilliant tactics against Catherine's raw power. The two armies clashed five times before Zera finally made his way to the Mattaian capital. Metro. The Battle of Metro The battle of Metro lasted five days. The first day consisted of the siege, Zera's forces were held back temporarily by the priests within the city walls. However, Zera's rampant power was able to shatter the shields long enough for his armies to pass through. Shortly afterward, his forces marched through the city streets, meeting the Mattaian forces blow for blow. The battles in the streets continued for the next three days. On the final day, with the sky turning red, the rain pouring over the streets, and the two armies clashing one last time at the steps of the imperial Palace. Zera and his Rival, Catherine met for one last fight. The fight was long, brutal and ruthless. The two fought until they could hold their blades no longer. Casting them aside they went in with their bear hands. As the lightning flashed in the sky, each fistfall sounded like a crash of thunder. Sweat, blood, tears and rage flowed from them. The sky split above them as the fight dragged on. So much power was released that some soldiers nearby began to grow sick. In the end, Zera could not beat his adversary, and instead banished her from the realm. This last gambit gave Zera the victory. He was soon after crowned Emperor of this new Mattaian Empire. The End Zera's reign since then lasted many years, he drudged on in the repetitive, monotonous politics. He had many sons and daughters with his empress, Taia. His method of rule had a positive effect on the empire as a whole, though the dictatorship was harsh on many of its people. However, his story had not truly ended there, as one day in his office, Zera suddenly disappeared from the face of Mattai. Legends say that he ascended and joined the ranks of the gods. A New Beginning In Midgar, Each summon materia is unique. One of a Kind. Shin-ra, had long had the ambition of replicating the materias and creating mass produced Summons. After a final success in creating a stable crystal it was stolen before it could be fully tested and bound to a spirit. A certain woman then used it, searching for someone to give her even more power. It resonated with Zera, and he was ripped from his world, torn through time, space and reality, and placed in midgar. Magic, as he knew it, did not exist on midgar. His powers, all but depleted and forced to readjust to this new land. His body reduced to that of a childs, he now has a chance to start anew. Just what is his plan...? Edited by Takeda, Oct 23 2009, 12:33 PM.
