Riot's hand went up, signaling the three behind him to come to a stop. Listening as hard as he could, Azreal kept his gun up at eye level. Through his scope, he could see the dark outlines of several buildings. In the center of his scope, a small red dot clung to a window pane where the silhouette of a man's head could be seen. After several more seconds of silence, Riot made a quick movement with his hand, giving the rest of the squad the all clear. Azreal brought his gun down and crept forward without a sound. He followed closely behind Riot, mimicking his every move. Behind him, Talon and Rook were doing the same. As they moved across a street and into another alleyway, each did their best to stay aware of every little movement and sound about them. The town of Kalm had been appropriately named. There were rarely disturbances of any kind. The residents all knew each other and formed a tight community were there was little to no crime. At the moment however, there were confirmed reports of a group of ruffians that had descended into the quiet town and started to disturb the peace. Whats more, this was an anti Shin-ra group. This group was still small and proved much more manageable than other groups such as AVALANCHE. The problem was that word of the actions being planned against them had reached the group and they had already fortified themselves against attack. In order to preserve the serenity of the town, the problem needed to be dealt with quickly and quietly. That was why Talvo company's 5th squad was there. Who better to handle the situation than SOLDIER? Rather than their typical third class uniforms, each of them was clothed in black. For this mission, Glare had required everyone to bring both a melee weapon and a silenced firearm. This was not a problem for Azreal, but Riot, Talon, and Rook did not usually carry both. Riot brought along a standard sentry rifle, Talon had a revolver, and Rook had a standard issue combat knife. In addition to this, they all had a pair of night vision goggles and two smoke grenades. This was the first covert mission that the squad had been assigned to, but of course, that's what the simulations were for. All four of them were in tight formation and had their firearms out. They turned around a corner and Riot put his goggles on. The other three followed suit and got into cover, looking down their weapons at a wide street in front of them. Riot looked over his shoulder and pointed at Azreal and Rook, then to a ladder to the side of him. Azreal got to the ladder first and quickly climbed up; Rook was right behind him. The two moved over to the edge of the roof and flattened themselves so that they could see the area in front of them while keeping a small profile. Azreal scanned back and forth across the street until he picked out two human figures. They were standing right next to each other, and he could faintly hear a conversation. This was not what he was looking for however. Rook tapped his shoulder and he turned his rifle so that it was pointed in the same direction as his comrade's weapon. Azreal was greeted by the sight of a decent sized house with several guards around it. 'Not taking many chances, are they?' Azreal made a quick motion to Rook before getting back up to a crouch and moving over to the ladder. He grabbed the metal of the ladder and vaulted over the edge of the building. He landed quietly beside Riot and held up two fingers, pointing to where the men were standing. This section of town had a curfew, which made anyone who was out in the dark suspicious. Riot made several quick motions then dashed out of the alley, taking cover behind a parked car. Azreal and Talon went the opposite direction out of the alley, jumping into the back of a truck. From his new position, Azreal was close enough to positively identify the two men; members of the gang they were targeting. He gave Riot a quick thumbs up and he was met with a nod. Azreal tapped Talon on the shoulder twice and she vaulted over the cab of the truck while he dropped out the back. He pressed himself up against the side of the building behind one of the men and took out his blade, Talon hid behind the other and did the same. At the sound of a click from where Rook was perched, Azreal and Talon struck out at the two men simultaneously from the shadows. A pair of short swords slit one man's throat while a broadsword burst out from the other's chest and ripped upward. They were dead instantly; the last sight they had being the death of their comrade. The SOLDIERs caught the bodies and silently lowered them to the ground in order to prevent any of the guards from noticing. Within the next second, they both vanished back into the shadows of the darkened city and regrouped with Riot. As Azreal put his blade back and retrieved his gun, he looked down the street in the direction of their real target. 'So far so good...' ------------------- Azreal, Talon, and Riot continued up he abandoned street without any more enemy contacts. At the same time, Rook followed their movements by traveling across the rooftops. His job was slightly more important than the rest of the squad, which meant he had to be more careful when he moved. If his position was revealed, the entire operation would soon become much more difficult. Azreal came to a stop and checked around the next corner. The objective was two or three blocks away, but the gang members were spread out. Down this street were three more standing within the shadows amongst the buildings. Holding back a sigh, Azreal turned to Riot and shook his head. Riot tried to think on his feet, but Talon had already come up with a solution. She had started scaling the wall to the side of them, using the windows as footholds. Riot saw her and shrugged before giving Azreal the signal to follow her up. While Azreal ascended up the side of the building, Riot went to the adjacent structure and found a fire escape that went up to the roof of a three story building. As soon as Talon reached the top she turned and reached down. She grabbed Azreal's hand and helped pull him up the rest of the way. They both stayed low, traveling the short distance to the edge of the roof. The vantage point from atop the building was much better than the streets, however the sporadic nature of the architecture in this part of town made it difficult to move from one structure to the next. Despite this fact, they had little choice; there were too many people in the streets. At a loss for what to do, Rook crossed the small gap between blocks and kept going until he had a clear view of the targeted building. He got onto his chest and lined up a shot. Now, all he had to do was wait for the signal. Azreal and Talon helped each other over the rough topography as they closed the distance to the objective. Riot was going around the opposite direction, trying to come in on the other side of the house and create a pincer attack. Occasionally, Azreal would looked down into the streets, trying to count how many guards there were. Their information said that there was less than twenty members in the gang. So far he had only seen eight. The good news was that it meant there were less people actually stationed at the building, the bad news was that having the foes spread out meant that escape would be a little bit more difficult. Azreal slid down the side of a roof and jumped onto the next building. Turning around, he extended his hand to Talon and helped her across the gap. When he reached the edge of the building, he ducked down, not daring to go any closer. There was only a single building between them and the house, and guards were positioned on the second floor balconies. He had a fair enough view of the structure, he had to admit; it was a rather nice house. Too bad there were four men guarding the front door and two more on the balconies. He figured that at least 4 more were inside, leaving one or two more out on patrol. Once Talon was beside him, Azreal picked a target and aimed at them through his scope. He reached for his radio and pushed the button twice, telling Rook and Riot that they were in position. There was a reply a moment later, though it was impossible to tell who it was. The moment the other person replied, Azreal would have a go to start the operation. It had to be quick and decisive, other wise the whole thing could turn into one giant mess. -------------------- Several minutes ticked by before the second radio response finally arrived. Azreal nodded to Talon then held his hand up, counting from three to one with his fingers. After he hit one, he immediately brought his hands back to his weapon. He fired off a single shot into his target's skull. The man slumped over and dropped off the balcony. Almost at the same time, Talon fired her own weapon, using two shots to take down the other balcony guard. Azreal changed his target to one of the men on ground level, who was now looking around; confused. Four shots to the chest felled this man, leaving Azreal to change to the next target. When he pulled the trigger this time, his gun made a grinding click noise. Of course... things couldn't just be easy... He used a free hand to turn on his radio. "Riot, we've got a problem, go to plan B." By this time, the last three guards had figured out what was happening and scrambled to get inside of the building. One of them was too slow and his back was peppered by machine gun rounds coming from the other direction. While Azreal struggled to get his gun unjammed, Riot's voice crackled over the radio. "Rook, take the shot. Now!" He took his clip out and tore the jammed round out then fed his clip back into the bottom of the weapon. "He's moving..." Two blocks over, Rook tracked his target until he passed behind a window and out of his view. He slammed his fist down on the building beside him. "Damn, lost him." Riot grumbled. "Well, there goes our plan... Time to-" 'Gotta move fast.' Azreal did not hear the rest of the message, he was already up and moving. Talon put her hand up in protest. "Dark, what do you think you're doing?" He kicked off the side of the building and landed on the roof of the next one. "Lets go Talon, we don't have much time." She let out a deep sigh, but got up none the less and followed. Keeping up his speed, Azreal made the leap towards the balcony. He caught the hand rail and pulled himself up onto the ledge. Just as he was about to go inside he stopped himself and turned around, grabbing hold of Talon's arm as she tried to make the jump herself. After pulling her up, he ran into the doorway, keeping his gun pointed forward. Riot's voice buzzed in his ear again. "Dark, what are you-....Rook, cover the exits. I'll take care of the patrols... Don't mess this one up Dark." Riot knew better than to try to stop Azreal; he had a habit of not listening. The inside of the house was just as luxurious as the outside. The halls were greatly ornamented and the furniture was clearly very expensive. 'How did these guys even get a place this nice?' He silently wondered to himself, though he already knew the answer. Their primary target, the leader of the anti Shin-ra group, was a former member of SOLDIER. His name was Ryan Nattok, a second class SOLDIER that went renegade after vanishing for about a month. He was supposed to be on a trip to Junon when he disappeared. When he finally showed up again, he started spouting nonsense about illegal experiments and secret programs. These men were the only people that seemed to really buy into his claims, but one could never be too sure. His salary would have been enough to afford an estate such as this. Azreal put his meaningless thoughts aside when the hallway opened up into a large room with a beautifully crafted stairway leading down to the first level. "Hey!" Two silhouettes on the floor below moved behind cover and the area where Azreal had been standing was blanketed with automatic weapons fire. 'And of course... they have heavy weapons...' He was about to return fire but Talon stopped him. She took one of the smoke grenades off her vest and pulled out the pin. She lobbed the grenade down so that it landed just in front of the two men. The bottom floor of the room was soon filled with smoke and the weapons fired slowed to a halt. "Don't rush in like last time Dark..." Azreal understood what she meant, she still had his bandanna covering up her eye; a possibly permanent injury that his actions had caused. "...Sorry." Talon moved onto the staircase followed by Azreal. The fact that they were still wearing their night vision gave them an unfair advantage over the two unfortunate souls in the smoke. They both flipped a switch on the devices, changing the goggles to the thermal spectrum. The heat outlines were easy targets and both were dropped almost instantly. ------------------ As Talon rushed down the large stairway, Azreal vaulted over the the railing, landing hard on the tile floor before dashing ahead. Stealth no longer really mattered; the gang members already knew they were there and were on high alert. The only real choice they had right now was to move fast and hit hard. Clearing the veil of smoke, Azreal dodged around a corner only to be met with more gunfire. The attack was relatively close, so Azreal didn't stop, sliding across the ground as he threw his gun forward. The rifle struck the man in the chest, knocking him off balance while the SOLDIER drew closer. He made a wild slash with his blade as he unsheathed it, catching the man's chest with the edge and spraying a bit of his blood on the walls. Even with this damage, the man managed to regain his balance and level his aim while Azreal was readying another strike. A quiet clicking noise was heard and the man stopped dead, a quickly growing red spot on his forehead. Talon stepped out from the smoke, spinning her silenced revolver on her fingers for a moment before sliding it into its holster. As the man fell to the ground, Azreal sheathed his blade and took up his gun again; rising to his feet. He gave a quick nod to Talon then stepped around the widening pool of blood that issued from the fallen foe, continuing on his way. He noticed as the hall suddenly grew thinner, restricting his movement if he were ambushed. This fact only made him move faster to clear the potential death trap. Even as he increased his pace, he could still hear Talon moving not more than a step behind him. The passage suddenly came to an end in front of them as a pure white wall loomed ahead. On the floor at the very end of the hall was a passage that led down into a basement. Ignoring the ladder, Azreal dropped down the hole, firing three rounds into the head of a heat signature at the base. The figure fell to the side just as Azreal landed hard on a concrete floor. He quick scanned around for any one else, but found the room empty. Rolling to the side, he cleared room for Talon to land as he tallied up how many of the gang members they had brought down. The sound of gunfire overhead indicated that Rook and Riot were still busy with the patrols, but he doubted that many would escape from that. He and Talon had already taken down a total of 8. That only left one or two in the company of the target. "Over there." Azreal glanced over to where Talon was pointing to see another passage in the very corner. Moving over to investigate, a stairway was revealed that led even further down. "He must have another way out.... Come on, we're running out of time." Realizing that his clip was almost empty, Azreal purged it and replaced it with a fresh one. Their target was a renegade SOLDIER, which meant that it wasn't going to be easy to take him down. without any further hesitation, Zephiel leveled his sight in front of his eye and rushed down the long descending stairway. He was glad that they had been given night vision for this mission; without it they would have been blind. The stairs soon came to an end, opening up into a large hall. The air was thick with the smell of rot and decay and the ground was sticky with mud and mold. 'A sewer....' Resisting a sigh, Azreal resumed his movement, going quickly in order to cut off their foe before he could escape. To let him go here would only result in a failed mission and more casualties in the future. Far ahead, He could see the fading thermal imprints left by footsteps. for the time being, that was all they had to go by. Jumping over the occasional stream of filth, they rushed ahead in pursuit. Light soon began to stream into the pitch black tunnel from some unknown location, eventually reaching the point where the goggles were unnecessary. There were no more paths branching off to the side and the thermal signs of their enemy has become much easier to spot; they had to be getting close. ------------------- A door appeared ahead, opening into a large room. As he drew closer, Azreal began to see details of the inside. A small stream of waste ran through the center; the rest was concrete. The light of the full moon filtered in through a grate and the walls reflected it back, filling the inside with light. Four pillars that were spaced out evenly around the edge of the room supported the ceiling. As Azreal passed through the door, he was immediately greeted by a hail of rounds. He reflexively dove into cover, just barely making it behind one of the pillars with bullets riddling his wake. 'They weren't running... just waiting for a chance to ambush...' A glance back showed him that Talon had not gone through yet and that the three men in the room had not yet noticed her. Azreal took a deep breath, preparing himself for what he was about to do. Dashing out from behind his cover, he focused his sights in on the man standing in center of the room. In a moment he realized that he was their target; Ryan Nattok. He had a heavy assault rifle in his hands and a sword sheathed on his belt. He had an almost deranged appearance; messy hair and a wild beard that needed to be shaved. Even with all of his funds, it looked as if he had been living in fear since Shin-ra's leaked intelligence reached him. His eyes held experience of one that always followed orders without question. Now that the man was on his own, he looked like he had trouble making decisions for himself. One of the men beside him was holding a chain gun, the other had two sub-machine guns. All three of them aimed at Azreal, but non of them were fast enough. With his sight leveled on Nattok's head, he pulled the trigger; sending three rounds right at the man's face. With a grunt, Ryan effortlessly sidestepped the rounds and opened fire. Rounds peppered the wall behind as Azreal ran. The chain gun spun to life and unleashed a torrent of death that stayed just a split second behind him. As he reached the next pillar, the rounds kept firing, cutting into the concrete around him. He was pinned down, and he knew it. Even as the shots rained down, he was thinking of what to do. Yet before he could come up with anything, Ryan raised his hand, signaling the men to hold their fire. Azreal glanced around the corner, only to see that Ryan had already closed the distance. He shifted his head just in time to see a fist slam into the pillar where it had just been, fracturing the surface with the impact. Another strike hit the pillar as Azreal rolled to the side. The sound of the chain gun coming to life again forced him to change his focus for a moment. A hastily aimed round found its mark in the man's chest; dropping him instantly. The other just realized that he had wasted all his ammo shooting at the concrete and was trying to reload. Even as Azreal aimed at this one, Ryan got into closer range again. He squeezed the trigger as the ex-SOLDIER's fist swung around and went into Azreal's gut. Because of this, the round went higher than intended; hitting the other man's shoulder rather than his heart. Azreal stumbled back, falling into Ryan's hold. Nattok bent his arm around his back, forcing the rifle out of Azreal's hand while he placed his arm firmly around his neck and applied pressure. "They sent a rookie to deal with me? Shin-ra must have lowered their standards for SOLDIER quite a bit..." His hold robbed Azreal of his air supply, leaving him to struggle in vain as darkness crept in the corners of his vision. The other man began to laugh at the futile display, but his laugh was cut short after a moment. A second round pierced through the back of his skull. With a quick movement, Ryan released Azreal's arm, snatched up his assault rifle, and spun it around, firing once in the direction that the shot came from. With a heavily forced movement, Azreal took advantage of the momentary release by slamming his elbow into Ryan's gut. The man grunted and tried not to stumble back but it was all the opening that Azreal needed. He ducked out of the hold, gasping for air as he forced his body to keep moving. He unsheathed his blade and brought it down towards his foe. Ryan jumped back and deflected the strike with the old rifle that was holding. A second strike came down on the battered weapon, splitting into its barrel and throwing it from Ryan's hands. Talon fired a second shot from the side, ringing out through the room. The silencer on the barrel had been damaged by the shot the Nattok fired. Ryan ducked back, unsheathing his blade as the bullet ripped pass his head. "So you're better than I thought... but you're still not taking me down." A sudden torrent of reckless slashed kept Azreal dodging backward, each strike missing narrowly. As he was forced further back, Azreal saw an opening and seized it, blocking one of the slashes before slamming the bottom of his hilt into his foe's stomach. Not really phased by the strike, Ryan spun around, cutting Talon's last round in half before it could make it any closer than two feet. Sighing, she tossed the revolver to the side and took out both of her blades, charging at Ryan. He shoved both of her blades aside and kicked Azreal in the chest at the same time, knocking him to the ground. While he quickly got back up, Talon did her best to keep their opponent on the defensive. Rising with a slash, Azreal caught Ryan's shoulder with the tip of his blade and sliced into his skin. Still showing no sign of pain, he forced both of Talon's blades down and lashed out with his other hand. A hard punch contacted her cheek and sent her to the ground, face first. Azreal responded in kind, slashing once more across his back. Nattok spun around with a slight grunt, a crazed look in his eyes. Blood was dripping down into his eyes from a slash on his forehead where Talon had managed to land a hit. Azreal swung his blade sideways with all of his might only to have Ryan block it with his bare arm. More blood dripped down his arm, yet he still didn't show any sign on pain. 'What the hell is up with this guy?' A retaliation came in the form of a one handed slash towards at his chest. Azreal ducked under the attack and pulled his sword back, stabbing up into his chest. The blade cut the surface of the skin but only went in about an inch before hitting something hard. Ryan grabbed Azreal's throat with his left hand and pulled him up, nearly raising him off the ground. "Do you see? Do you see what they did to me?" For the first time, Azreal noticed that he could see that outline of bones along his hand and arms. They had grown to inhuman proportions, spreading to the edge of the skin in a sort of armor. "They turned me into a monster...They did this." He raised Azreal up, once again stopping the air supply to his lungs. -------------------- Holding Azreal up in the air for a moment, Ryan shook his head and threw him into one of the pillars to the side. The structure cracked as Azreal slammed into it, an agonizing pain going through his back. As air returned to his lungs, he looked up in a daze. Ryan was walking past him towards the door on the other side of the room. He fought through it all and forced himself back up, using his sword to rise to full height. He charged at Nattok, trying once more to drive his blade through him. Ryan didn't have time to spin around before the blade slammed into his back. Unlike every other attempt, the blade actually pierced him, going through his body until the strengthened bones in the front of his chest stopped it from going all the way through. Still, it seemed to be enough to cause significant damage. Ryan grunted, not moving his body any more. "You fool.... You follow their order's so readily? Don't you understand what they do to people? You're just one of their experiments... just like every other SOLDIER... every other person living in that cursed city... Staying in that company will only lead to your destruction. You'll end up just like me, an experiment gone wrong that needs to be exterminated. You... your friend over there... those two that are up there fighting.... your lives will be lived and lost in vain. Would you really condemn yourselves to that kind of fate?" Azreal didn't even look at Ryan, his eyes instead moving toward Talon, who still lay unconscious on the ground. He stopped pushing his blade forward and his grip loosened slightly as doubt was cast in his mind. "The lies they feed you make you weaker and sap your inner strength... you need only break the shroud around you." Making a sort of growling noise, Azreal ripped his blade out the mans back and slugged him in face just as he had done to Talon. Ryan fell forwards, just barely catching himself as he dropped into the steam of filth. A bruise quickly formed on his face from the impact and he winced slightly, looked back over his shoulder at Azreal. "You aren't so weak as the others... nor are your allies... you could save yourselves before its too late... or you could stay in Midgar and rot." With that, he ran through the opening at the end of the stream, moving back into the labyrinth of the Kalm sewers. Rather than giving chase, Azreal moved back over to Talon sat her up, trying to wake her up. "Talon...Talon! Come on Sarah, we've got to get out of here." Sighing, he knelt down next to her. His radio crackled and Riot's voice came through. "Dark, we've finished up over here-" He cut himself off with a burst of gunfire followed by a scream in the distance. "...Yeah, we took care of everyone up here, whats the status of the target?" Azreal brought his radio up to his mouth and pressed the button after hesitating for a moment. "Ryan Nattok has..... he's dead, mission accomplished... Talon's pretty banged up, but I should be able to get her out of here without too much of a problem. We're stuck in the sewers right now, but I'll start heading back in a second." "You had me worried for a second Dark, but it looks like you came through.... but please, wait for the order next time." "Yes sir..." "Good, I'll call in the transport. See you when you get back up here." Letting out one last sigh, Azreal picked Talon up in his arms and headed for the exit. Her slow breathing made her chest rise and fall as her face buried itself in his shirt. The only sign of injury that she had was a bruise on her cheek. As far as he could tell, Ryan had just knocked her out cold. Azreal's mind was too busy to notice how long it actually took to get back to the house or for him to meet back up with Rook and Riot. The man hadn't really tried to kill either of them, he was just trying to escape. Azreal wasn't sure why he had let him go, or why he lied about it. Doubt about Shin-ra's intentions had been seeded in his mind. As the helicopter arrived, He set Talon down in the seat beside him and stared blankly out the window. Riot was telling him about the battle but Azreal wasn't really listening. After awhile, Riot finally stopped and Azreal put his headphones in, finding at least some mental relief in the beats of the music. Edited by Dark Harbinger, Jan 6 2010, 07:05 PM.
