Twilight was breaking over the golden sands of the desert, giving everything an indigo hue. The Soldier Danny was there to witness the beauty, his partner, the ever chipper Turk Reno, was not appreciative of it at all, murmuring curses under his breath and rubbing the sleep out of his eyes as he drove the jeep over the dunes. “Me, of all people, for a mission at five in the morning, it couldn’t have been an early bird like Tseng, no, it had to be me,” Danny smiled over at Reno who beat his head lightly against the steering will muttering more curses. “I can drive if you want,” said Danny, who was wide awake. “And drive us into a valley somewhere and get us stuck while you run off to wherever it is Shinra wants to keep you from running off to? Not happening.” Danny looked a little hurt, “you don’t trust me?” “Nope.” “After all the missions we’ve been on together?” “We’ve been on like three mission yo,” growled the redhead. “Oh, Nevermind then.” Danny looked over at the desert and went silent, although he was smiling. Today’s mission was to deal with some monsters that had sprung up in the desert. Apparently they were nasty little buggers that Shinra didn’t want breeding. |

Coming up in front of Danny and Reno's jeep as they drove through the desert might be an abandoned tent and extinguished campfire circle. The tent looked like it had just been used, while the campfire had been put out the night before. There were a set of tracks in the sand heading south. They had to be very fresh to still be there, since tracks in dry sand weren't known to stay for very long. The tracks were a little odd looking. One set of foot prints, and another set, but of hand prints. Either something was talking on all fours, or there were two creatures and one was walking on its hands. --- A good ways further south, the creature who had made those tracks was scampering through the desert at this wee hour of the morning. She was an odd little thing in the desert. Tan skinned, black hair, dark brown eyes, she looked mostly human, but for some reason she was running on all fours through the desert like a leonine. She was also sniffing at the air desperately as she made her tracks, trying to keep locked onto a smell she picked up. Giving her completely away as not human was her dark blue and green stripped fur on her cat-like ears and tail, which was swaying around behind her helping her keep balance as she charged along. She was wearing a light blue kimono of all things, which normally would have made her stick out like a sore thumb in the desert. But luckily with the indigo hue of the morning she blended in a little bit better with the sands. Her luck continued as she hadn't run into any of the monsters that Danny and Reno had come to thin out. But she was too preoccupied to be thinking about the monsters in the desert, and so hadn't been checking her surroundings. If she was being tracked by one of the monsters, for example, she wouldn't have the slightest clue. |

“What the…,” came the Turk’s voice beside him and Danny looked up, unaware that he had been zoning out. Reno was leaning forward with his eyes squinted. Danny turned to look and saw a tent. He tilted his head then hopped out of the jeep as Reno slowed it to a stop. He walked over and pulled his glove off and held it above the makeshift fire pit. There was no heat, and when he lifted a stick from it there was no warmth coming from it. He dropped the stick and bent to look into the tent, but there was no on inside. “I’ve got tracks,” said Reno and Danny turned to look. He stood up and walked over and looked at the oddly shaped tracks before looking at where they lead. “Someone’s wandering around a desert full of monsters, do you think we should go help them?” “Wherever that someone is the monsters are most likely to be, so either way, we’re following those tracks,” said Reno as he walked back to the jeep. Danny bent down and inspected the tracks for a second before Reno yelled, “are you coming or what?” Danny stood up and ran back to the jeep sliding into his seat as Reno began driving off. Danny kept a keep eye on the lookout for someone wandering around. Within moments the sun broke over the horizon and lit up the world, making everything easier to spot. “There’s someone,” said Danny, pointing and Reno leaned forward squinting, “more like something.” Sure enough, as Danny looked closer, the thing was humanoid, but not human. He hopped out of the jeep and rolled slightly as Reno exclaimed and hit the brakes, sending sand flying over the tires and spraying outwards. Danny carefully approached the thing as it sniffed about the air, looking for something. It did not fit the description of the monsters that Shinra gave him so he was curious to see what it was. |

The humanoid critter's ears twitched as she heard the jeep approaching. Turning her head to see the vehicle, she was more observant of what had just hopped out of it and into the sand. The little creature backed up slowly away as the jeep came to a shifting stop. Her attention went back to Danny as he approached her. As he came closer, the little girl shrink down a little, hear cat-like ears pressing down against her head and her tail curling up low to the ground behind her. She looked scared of Danny. Her head then darted around, looking through the desert. She wanted to find a place to hide. A rock. A dune. Anything. But there wasn't anywhere close enough for her to get to very quickly. She didn't seem to want to leave empty space between Danny and herself, though. It made it too easy for him to get near her. His uniform and helmet didn't make him look all that friendly, either. Making a desperate attempt to find something to put between Danny and herself, the little child ran for the jeep itself. Circling to Reno's side of the jeep to keep up as much distance from Danny, she moved on all fours at a decent quickness. She was familiar enough with vehicles to not stand in front of them or their tires, though. Backing away from Reno as she got near his door, the little critter ran to back of the jeep, finally coming to a stop next to the back tire that was behind Reno. Bobbing her head up and down, she tried to keep watch of Danny either from under or around the jeep, trying to keep track of his actions. |

“She’s uh…,” Reno began watching the creature run around the jeep, “I have no idea what she is,” he ffnished, opening his door and leaning out to look at her. “looks like she’s scared of me,” said Danny watching her movements. “That’s because you’re a nutjob.” Said Reno. Danny reached up and took his sword off, stabbing it into the sand and stepping away from it, hoping to look a bit less intimidating without it. He then held his hands out to show that they were empty before he bent down, “hey, it’s okay,” he said taking off his helmet, “see? I’m not scary.” Reno snuck around the jeep behind the creature to try to get a better look at her. “We’re not telling Shinra about her,” said Danny sternly and Reno looked up at him with an eyebrow cocked and Danny glared at him slightly. |

The little girl looked back and forth between Reno and Danny as they talked. When Reno called Danny a nutjob, the little creature's eyebrow raised up curiously. Looking back in time to see Danny stab his sword into the sand, the small thing got startled and ducked behind the jeep again. She watched his feet, though, and saw him stepping away from the sword. She also noted a different pair of feet getting closer to her. Watching as Reno was trying to get closer, she moved around the jeep, ending up closer to Danny. Looking at him as he presented his empty hands, she watched curiously as he took off his helmet. His eyes shimmered with something. The curious little child stared into his eyes, never having seen a mako-induced person before. But seeing his crystalline blue eyes and his light blond hair indeed made him look almost gentle. And then he himself said he wasn't scary. On the other hand, Reno looked pretty shady. Not liking that Reno had moved to get closer to her, and listening to the way Danny seemed to be defending her, and taking into account how Danny had moved to give her space and show himself as non-threatening, she took her chances with Danny. Scampering through the sand again, she ran around to hide behind Danny, now having him between Reno and herself. Looking up at the Third-classed SOLDIER, the little girl had a pretty sad look in her eyes. It might feel like she was looking up at Danny asking him for help. |

Danny laughed as the girl ran away from Reno and hid behind him, “looks like I win,” said Danny turning to look at the girl, “she’s like a cat almost, kind of like the leader of the Leo squad,” he stopped though and turned to face the girl, reaching up to stroke her cheek. Though she was not crying, it looked like she was about to, “hey,” he cooed softly, “are you okay?” “This isn’t your mission,” said Reno folding his arms, “we need to deal with the monsters and haul our asses back to headquarters.” “She looks lost,” said Danny looking over his shoulder, “I’m not going to leave a little girl in the monster-infested desert by herself. I think she belongs to somebody, maybe they’re looking for her.” “That’s still not the mission,” groaned Reno turning and looking across the desert. Goddess knows what he was looking for, perhaps trying to spot the monsters they were trying to deal with or merely giving Danny the cold shoulder. Danny shrugged and put his attention back to the little girl. “Are you lost?” he asked softly. |

The little cat girl blinked as Danny stroked her cheek. As he asked her if she was okay, her small lips quivered a bit and she couldn't help but let out a short mewling sound. She was distracted, though, by Reno's words. Her brow furled when he mentioned monsters. And then Danny's words enforced that idea. Looking even more concerned at the mention of the monster-infestation, the child joined Reno in looking across the desert. When Danny asked if she was lost she shook her head no. It would seem that she understood him. She figured this wasn't the best time to be shy, so she dredged up her courage and gulped a little to clear her throat. But she couldn't overcome her shyness completely. Compromising with her instincts, she moved up to try to whisper into Danny's ear. "What monsters?" she asked him. |

Danny cooed softly as her lip quivered, he really didn’t want her to cry. He looked over as she did and noticed Reno and murmured, “don’t worry he’s not going to hurt you,” he was a little taken aback when she leaned forward and he leaned back, resting a hand on her back but paused as she whispered somethin and he smiled, “well,” he began sitting down, making sure that he didn’t sit on his hair, “we were sent here to deal with some monsters, not sure what they are exactly, some sort of breed of bandersnatch I guess, but more meant for the desert.” Danny stood up and lifted up his helmet, “but then we found your tracks and came to make sure they hadn’t come to attack you, but uh…. What are you doing out here all alone anyway?” Reno grunted and shook his head. Danny looked over at him and tilted his head, “do you want the death of a little girl on your conscience?” “I’m a Turk yo, I don’t care. I want to go home and catch up on my sleep that I missed because you had to go out on this mission.” Danny shook his head then looked at the little girl, “don’t mind him, he’s just in a bad mood.” |

"Ba-bandersnatch?" the young cat girl asked, stuttering, "like the wo-wolf m-monsters up in the ice country?" This made her even more concerned looking, her eyes darting around in thought. She looked back up when he asked her a question. "I-I w-wasn't alone. My Daddy was with me. Bu-but he's lost now," she said, turning her head to look south in the direction she was heading before Danny and Reno had found her. "I-I need to find him. The m-monsters could hu-hurt him," she said, looking up at Danny again with pleading eyes. But it sounded like he was busy with his mission, and it didn't sound like Reno would want to help her. She was determined to keep looking for her father, though, even without their help. To show this she took a few paces away from them towards the south. She had after all started her search alone. The threat of the monsters didn't seem like something that would stop her. |

Danny looked at the girl before biting his lip in thought. He didn’t want to leave her alone, and he didn’t want to bring her with in case Reno decided to kidnap her and send her to the Shinra science department. He growled a bit and ran a hand through his hair before looking to the south as the girl began walking in that direction. He hit his knee as he tried to decide then said, “okay, let’s help you find your dad.” “What!?” asked Reno turning around and running towards Danny, “no, no, no, you are accomplishing your mission, I don’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere for another day because you want to help some little lost cat girl find her bigger lost cat father thing. We are going to take care of those monsters right now.” “We’ll take care of them later, tomorrow if needed, I don’t care if you don’t have a conscience, but I can’t just leave her and I’m not letting you take her to Shinra,’ he then turned and began heading South to help the child look for her father. Reno stood there dumbfounded for a moment before he sputtered. “Hey! No, you listen, cause I outrank you right now, I give the orders and I order you to get back in the jeep and kill the freaking monsters so that we can go home!” “I can’t hear you!” called Danny back before smiling down at the girl. |

The little cat girl smiled and her eyes brightened when Danny said he was gonna help her. As Danny began to follow her south she start taking steps in that direction, too. But then she noticed something. Danny had forgotten his sword in the sand. Her tail whipped up to reach for the weapon, grabbing it by its hand-guard, and then bringing it over to offer it back to Danny. Once she did so, she started taking off to the south again in full speed, picking back up on the scent trail she had before. But her ears twitched as Reno protested. Looking up at Danny as she ran along she asked, "You're not gonna get in t-trouble? He's not gonna f-follow us?" She then thought for a bit, "I-I saw a cave sy-system the other day in the cl-cliffs. If he doesn't leave us a-alone we can l-lose him there," she suggested. Her tail curled up and then straightened out to point a cliff side that was coming up on the south west. |

Danny smiled and accepted his sword and sheathed it on his back before running after the girl. He looked over as she began to speak to him and he laughed slightly, “we’re not running away from him. He’ll either follow or stay put, maybe even take care of the monsters himself, but we don’t have to worry about him to much, he’s just cranky is all. He was breathing heavily, it was difficult to keep up with the girl, “don’t worry about me getting into trouble, I’m used to it by now. Everyone’s a bit displeased with me fore some reason or other,” he swallowed and then slowed to a stop, bending over and resting his hands on his knees. He breathed heavily for a moment before gasping, “you’re really fast.” He heard in the distance a motor and he sighed and bowed his head, “sounds like he’s coming after us,” he said quietly before standing up, “can we walk for a bit?” he asked and started walking towards the south. |

When Danny came to a stop, so did the little girl. Trailing back to come to his side, she check to see what was wrong, only to learn that she was just over pacing him. She sheepishly let him rest, looking passed him back to the jeep. She still wasn't really sure what to make of everything. "You work for the electric power company?" she asked. When the motor sounds came up so did her cat ears, her fur on them standing on end. When Danny stated moving again the little girl tried to stay slowed down to a trot in hopes of not tiring Danny out again. But she didn't really like that Reno was following them. "W-why would he want to t-take me away?" she asked. She looked up to the cliffs, and then to the horizon beyond it. She could start seeing green. They were pretty far south. South and east of the cliffs was the river. The little cat girl sniffed at the air. She could still pick up her father's scent. She wondered how far he had gone. |

“Yes,” answered Danny, “I work for Shinra,” he looked down at her and smiled, “but don’t worry, I’m not mean or nasty like some people are,” he turned and looked behind them at Reno who was driving the jeep. The Turk could have easily caught up to them on foot, he was the fastest of the Turks, or so he had heard, he had never seen him in action though. He looked back down at the girl as she asked her question. “Because you’re unique,” answered Danny, looking ahead, “and Shinra seems to want to collect and experiment on anything that is unusual and unique,” the image of his sister popped into his mind and he frowned a little bit. He then slowed to a stop as they came to a river and he rested his hands on his hips. “Well…,” he said as his mind tried to pull up the image of what possibly could have happened, “either he crossed the river, which would be hard to do on foot, he went swimming, which would be nuts in this strong of a current, or he fell in. Guessing at the latter, he’s probably further down the river,” he didn’t want to mention that he was most likely also no longer alive. “Heads up!” came Reno’s voice and Danny turned around to see the tan-colored bandersnatched bearing down on them. Muttering a curse under his breath Danny drew his sword from his back and charged at them yelling to the little girl, “hide behind something!” and he smacked the lead bandersnatch on the head with the hilt of his sword, causing its jaws to close with a snap as it buckled and tumbled forward. He swung his blade and knocked one to the side and into the river, then turned around as the leader stood up and growled. “This is going to take longer than expected.” |

The little cat girl turned her head in bewilderment. She'd never heard of Shinra experimenting on people before. She just knew them as basically the government that ran the world. Spare some propaganda that they were killing the planet, she had not heard much bad ever about Shinra. Though she didn't know this was only because Shinra was very good at covering things up. Nonetheless, it was a bit disturbing hearing that from someone who worked for The company itself. Nonetheless, she kept on sniffing all the way until they got to the water. She looked around, but couldn't see him. She listened to Danny's words, and approaching the river it really did feel like he had fallen in. She looked down the river, about to follow it for a bit to get a better idea of where her father might have ended up, but her attention was pulled back by Reno's call. Looked like they didn't have to go the monsters. The monsters came to them. Letting out a little yelp when she saw the bandersnatches charging towards them, and hearing Danny's orders, the little creature's instincts took over. She jumped straight for the river. To anyone's relief, though, she didn't get swept away. She didn't even sink into the water. The water directly under her feet just seemed to stop, not moving, and the little cat girl stood on it like it was solid ground. As she stood there, she almost seemed to radiate an aura. It was as if she was going to start glowing, but never became luminous. Nonetheless she seemed pretty safe out on the river. She watched as Danny smacked one of the bandersnatches into the river. The river was strong, even the bandersnatch couldn't swim against its current. As the monster was carried down towards her position on the river, the little girl arched her back and had her fur stand on end, angrily hissing and growling at the desert monster. While the bandersnatch didn't have control of its movements while under the influence of the river's current, the little cat girl did, and moved around so that the tumbling monster couldn't bite her or scratch at her as it moved by. But the little girl didn't want to risk the monster washing back up onto the land and coming to attack Danny again. Drawing out her cat-like claws, she very carefully struck at the bandersnatch's neck as it drifted by her, the girl's attack strength enhanced by being on the river, and hopefully ending the threat of at least this one monster. |

Danny, looked around before he swung his sword at another bandersnatch, yelling out as one grabbed his arm in its jaws and he smacked his fist between its eyes, another jumped on his back and tried to bit his shoulder but he reached up and threw it off before stabbing the tip of his sword into the side of another one. He took a deep breath and swung his sword around, slicing a couple more but doing minimal damage. He ducked as one jumped for him and went sailing over and he kicked another in its ribs. After a couple minutes two of the apparent six that had attacked were dead, not counting the one he had thrown into the river. The three remaining circled him as he panted heavily, “jeez,” he said, swallowing, “you’d never think I was a second class before this,” he lifted his blade and jumped forward, slicing one across the chest before kicking back against one that came up from behind. He stabbed the first one through the chest, killing it before swinging around and cutting the other against his neck, breaking his spine. Finally he turned around to the remaining one, the leader of the group. He swallowed again before standing and running a hand through his hair, “just you and me now I guess,” he said to the bandersnatch before shoving his sword into the head of the paralyzed one, putting it out of it’s misery. |

The little girl helped as Danny was attacked on all sides. She let out desperate mewls as he was bitten and jumped upon. She wanted to walk off the river and come help him. But once back on land she would lose the water's protection and her attacks would be weaker for it. Weaker and more easily damaged, she'd just get in Danny's way if she came on land to try to help him. Worse, he might have to protect her if she tried, instead of just having to protect himself. But Danny wasn't beaten yet. Waiting with nervous patience on the river water, she watched as he worked hard to eliminate almost the entire pack. Pacing back and forth on the water like a tiger trying to ward off another animal, she observed each successful blow Danny landed. When it came down to the last of the bandersnatches, Lily Phoebe's ears perked up. "Be careful!" she called out to Danny, "if they're anything like the northern ones then if it howls more will come back!" she noted. While Danny dispatched the monster that he had broken its spine, the little girl frantically looked around. As quick as she could she ran to the river's other side, scampering across the surface of the water. When she got to the other side she picked up a rock about the size of a fist with her tail, and then headed back to the side that Danny and the bandersnatch were still at. She couldn't do much to help Danny, but she tried the best she could. Coming up to the river's edge, she threw the rock at the leader of the pack's head, trying to distract it in hopes of making it easier for Danny to kill it. |

Danny looked over the girl as she mentioned the howling. Almost as if on cue the monster lifted his head, “oh no you don’t!” exclaimed Danny as he lunged forward and wrapped his arms around the monster’s snout. The monster thrashed about but Danny held tight, his sword left forgotten behind him. He grunted as the beast dragged him around, growling feircley, recalling an old saying; if you’ve got a tiger by the tail don’t let go. Danny wasn’t sure if her was recalling the saying correctly but he sure felt that he shouldn’t let go of the bandersnatch. That was when the girl threw a stone towards them. Danny caught it in his hand and struck it against the bandersnath’s head. The monster went limp and Danny let it drop to the ground as he shifted into a sitting position and exhaled heavily. He rested his arms on his upraised knees and looked at his forearm where the bandersnatch had bitten him. It was bloody, and he was most likely going to get rabies shots because of it. He shook his head and closed his eyes, sighing. Reno came out of the jeep and Danny looked up at him, “well you’re no help at all.” “This was your mission, not mine.” |

The girl looked sad when she noticed Danny's bleeding wound. With Reno so close, though, the little cat girl didn't want to come off the river out of fear of what Danny had told her. She didn't want to be taken away. Nonetheless, she came as close as she could without leaving the protection of the water. "I-I think you're going to n-need a doctor," she called out to Danny. Now that the monsters had been taken care of, though, the little girl got a moment to catch her breath and calm down a little. The scent trail that they had followed had come up to this river. Normally this would have literally washed away the trail they were following. But this little creature was protected by the water. And though she could not breath underwater, she could still try something. Dipping her nose into the running river, she sniffed. Like a shark picking up blood, the little girl picked up the scent of her father in the river. Bringing her head back up and coughing up a bit of water, she looked to the south east. Her father had indeed been washed down the river in its flow. Looking back to Danny and Reno, she spoke up again, "You should get th-that ch-checked out." She was trying to suggest they head their separate ways, as unwise as it was for the little girl to try to do things on her own. But Danny was hurt, and the little girl didn't want to stop looking for her father. |

Danny looked up at the little girl as she stood on the water like some sort of god and stuck her head into it. When she came back out she spoke up and Danny ooked down at his arm. Reno looked at it as well and shook his head clicking his tongue against the roof of his mouth. Danny then looked back at the girl and said, “but I want to help you look for your father. I know what it’s like to lose someone.” “Oh not this sob story,” groaned Reno as he moved back towards the jeep. Danny looked over at the redhead then back to the girl. “I lost my sister, and I would look for her if I could,” Danny stood up and walked towards the girl, “let me help as much as I can. It will make me feel better,” he would ignore his arm, and Reno, for now. He wanted to help, to be useful. If he could find this girl’s father, he was sure that he could find Danielle and be with her again as a family. "He got washed down the river right?" he asked. He then began to walk down the bank of the river, following the flow down to the ocean looking out for anyone washed up on the shore. |

The little girl was sad to hear that Danny had lost his sister. She didn't think it was safe for Danny to walk around with his arm in that condition. She didn't want it to end up infected because he didn't get it treated right away. But he had seemed to have made up his mind. Still too shy to voice her opinions, she just began to trot on the water of the river to try to keep up with Danny. She liked Reno even less now for the way he treated Danny, so stayed on the assumed safety of the river. "...W-why c-can't you look for your sister?" her curiosity got the better of her. Having now learned of Danny's sister, the little creature realized there was little she knew about this man she had just met. Not even his name. But it would be rude to ask someone's name without introducing herself first. "I-I'm Lily Phoebe, by the way.... W-what's y-your name?" Lily Phoebe asked. As they reached the bay, Lily Phoebe looked around with Danny. Her father's scent wasn't in the air, however. It didn't seem like he had washed up on these shores. Mewling a little as if about to cry, the small little creature desperately stuck her face into the water again. It was more difficult this time as the water had become salty, but Lily Phoebe tried her best. Bringing her head back up sharply, she coughed and choked up some water, spitting it out and rubbing her nose vigorously. "Daddy is o-o-out in the o-ocean," Lily Phoebe reported. |

Danny walked beside the river, leaving Reno behind leaning against the jeep. He looked over as she spoke to him and he smiled a sad smile, “well, I’ll get into more trouble than I already am if I go look for her, not to mention that there are people who still want to do nasty things to her and if I find her, so do they. They made her different, they changed her, and they want to finish what they started.” Danny stopped at the edge of the peach where the river met the sea. He looked out as a soft sea breeze blew his hair back and caused him to squint a little. He looked over as the girl stuck her head into the water again. He found it interesting that a girl that seemed part cat would willingly stick her head under the water. When she came back out and said that her father was in the ocean Danny looked back to the open water and bit his lip slightly in thought. Blood flowed off his arm and mixed with the sand near his feet. He now had a dilemma on his hands. He wanted to help her look for her father, but to continue would mean to take her with him, and that would be too dangerous for her. But he didn’t just want to leave her hear at the edge of a continent looking out to the ocean in search for her father. Finally he turned to look at her and asked, “would you be willing to risk coming with me to find your father? If not, I’ll leave, but keep an eye out. I don’t want to subject you to danger unless you’re willing to risk it.” |

Lily Phoebe looked down through the water below her. She remembered his upset look when he mentioned the Shinra collecting unusual and unique things. "...S-Shinra t-took your sister and ex-experimented o-on her?" Lily Phoebe pieced together. But the way he described the situation made it sound as if she had gotten away. "She escaped and th-they can't find her?" she asked further. She looked at his arm. He really needed help. That much bleeding had to be really bad. He couldn't stay any longer. She was about to tell him to go when he spoke up again. She thought his proposal over, then looked back out to the ocean. "Daddy'll p-probably wash up on the e-eastern lands. M-maybe near J-Junon. I-I can go to Costa Del Sol," she said. She turned back to look to Danny again, though. "I-I would risk anything to find Daddy. I-I don't care what danger there is. B-but I-I don't even know your n-name," she said. |
